for live music fans, kicking off with the Mullum Music Festival opening night gala tonight, followed by three days of performances by local and international musos at various venues across town. For tickets (adult day tickets from $68), visit mullummusicfestival.com. If that’s not enough, the Hotel Brunswick will be hosting a free gig by Harts from 7pm on Friday. To coincide with his new releases, the Indian-born, Aussie-based artist will be performing new music with an expanded live band.

Back in Byron on Friday, the Community Centre will be hosting a screening of local forest activist doco Loggerheads at 6:30pm, followed by a discussion with local enviro activist Dailan Pugh and former NSW Environment Minister Bob Debus about how the community can work with the Labour Government to achieve positive environmental outcomes. Up the road at Habitat, Popped Creative will be presenting a free exhibition by Aussie street art legend Teazer from 5pm in celebration of Habitat’s first birthday on Friday. Inspired by retro romance novels, the exhibition will include works available for sale along with a selection of limited edition prints. We’re told there’ll be nibbles and drinks, too. Finally, if you’re free on Wednesday, don’t miss Donovan Frankenreiter at The Northern, where the Californian muso will be performing his new album, The Heart, from 8pm ($40; thenorthern.com.au)

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST
THIS WEEK OF BIG PLANETARY CHANGES
could create chaos even in the most perfectly arranged life! On Thursday Mars, on his last degree in Aquarius, is sextile to Uranus in Aries. The desire to make things happen or to push for revolutionary change is so strong that erratic action is almost unavoidable. Only a few hours later, on Friday morning, Mars moves into imaginative and otherworldly Pisces, where he resides for the rest of this year. On the upside creative projects might flow very well, but on the downside this may be quite a confusing time and it can be difficult to determine straightforward direction. On Saturday Venus is finally changing her direction, but it will take her until mid-December until she moves beyond her shadow into new territory. First she has to cover the same old ground and deal with any relationship issue or re-evaluation that came up in the last six weeks. Finally on Sunday Mercury turns retrograde for three weeks in Sagittarius. This adds to the overall confusion; be prepared for misunderstandings and lost messages. If you have to travel or have a very tight schedule it is important to factor in extra time for any sudden delays or detours. A Mars/Jupiter square is building (exact on Tuesday) and aggravates inner turmoil or frustration. A watery healing trine from Sun to Chiron suggests spending some time in meditation and nature contemplation, before you go out into the world to act on your impulses! For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.
g ARIES
The 8 of Disks comes as a reminder to avoid extremes and rash reactions. Find ways to temper your temperament; work diligently and methodically, and you’ll navigate the rather emotional tides of this week quite well, while gaining great insights about yourself.
h TAURUS
The 3 of Wands offers great wisdom: don’t move forward in a new direction until you find your inner alignment of body, mind and heart. You recognise that you have achieved exactly that, once all doubt and inner tension about the issue have left you and are replaced by inner knowing.
i GEMINI
The theme of the 4 of Disks is power, disempowerment and empowerment. You might have to deal with a lot of confusion concerning your wants, needs and limits. Take some time to clarify and own your boundaries, then it is much easier to communicate them gracefully to others.

The 8 of Cups represents weariness and burn-out. Maybe you have been overextending yourself and now feel drained and have nothing more to give. Don’t push yourself harder; rather take some time off in nurturing nature or with your favourite pet project to recharge your batteries.
The Princess of Swords symbolises a free and maybe a little rebellious spirit. She is on your side and provides you with the courage necessary to tell your honest truth, and to act according to your ethical principles, even if you have to rock somebody’s boat.
a LIBRA
The Hermit Tarot card suggests that you leave your social distractions behind and focus inward during this confusing week. As you honour your need for space and time for introspection, many of your questions find answers from within.
b SCORPIO
The 3 of Cups represents celebration of family or friendships and heart-felt connections. It emphasises the sweet experience when giving and receiving flow in equally fulfilling ways. This is a great time to get together for joyful co-creation, teamwork and team spirit.
The 7 of Cups describes the effects of self-sabotaging patterns. They may show up in your life as excessive habits, such as over-eating, -drinking, -working, taking drugs or watching TV. They function as distraction and numb your feelings. The time is ripe to ponder what you really want.

The Prince of Disks appears for the second consecutive week! Even though your enthusiasm might be high, it is important to stay grounded and to slow down. Otherwise you miss important details and big things can’t happen because the little things are not taken care of. Delays are mostly unavoidable!
The Queen of Wands knows how to create powerful first impressions and she is on your side infusing you with energy, passion and vitality. This week any mission is bound to be successful because you radiate optimism and can convince anyone with your capability.
e AQUARIUS
When the Death Tarot card appears it is time to say goodbye to a way of life that does not serve you anymore. If you are stubborn and resist the necessary letting-go, more pain will follow. Trust that the letting go is necessary for the renewal and transformation of your life.
f PISCES
The Justice Tarot card emphasises the willingness to be truthful, just and ethical in all areas of life. This is especially important from Sunday onwards, and during difficult conversations. Your absolutely honest response is necessary to clear up any doubts, assumptions and misunderstandings.

Mulla, dough, scratch, scrilla, one thing fa shiz, is that we all want it, even if we are ashamed to admit it. Like it or loathe it, money is an energy exchange that you take part in daily, so why not enjoy it? Like its friends, the R (race) and S (sex) word, if we keep the sneaky M on the sly, it plays out in its shadow form on the collective stage. Stop what you are doing right now, and tell the person sitting next to you what you love about money. What about all the good things money brings to the world?
DEAR KEENWA, I recently moved into a share house that advertised for a vegan only. I had to tell a white lie, 'cos you know what the housing sitch is around here, but have resorted to smuggling in beef jerky, and eating bacon raw out of the packet so as not to raise a stink. I am seriously concerned about my protein levels, but don't want to be kicked out. What to do? - Flaky Flexitarian
DEAR FLAKY FLEXITARIAN, Dude are you for real? You know even the thought of meat (from another person) is enough to tipple a practicing vegan into insomnia and unaligned chakras and a very long rant. But alas, I am of the school that only living and sharing community with people with the exact same spiritual beliefs is as dangerous as eating warm bacon. We were not only made to be different, but to celebrate those differences regardless of whether they float our own goat or not. Anyone forcing their beliefs on another should be evicted.Â

This week's mantra
RESPECT AND PROTECT YOUR BOUNDARIES. Get home tapped out and irritated because you carried the load for your co-workers? Bump all of your priorities to the bottom of the list so you can help someone else — and then feel annoyed? You, my friend, may have boundary issues. My teacher Dr. Scott Lyons once told me “anger is the signal that lets us know our boundaries have been violated.” Yes, anger can be heated — like when you want to flip the bird or throw a plate. But anger has other less firey flavours like annoyance, frustration or a sense of injustice. The many faces of anger are all trying to point out to you that a line has been crossed. They’re sounding an alarm... “hey homeslice, someone’s all up in your shit.” So instead of shaming your feelings, thank them for the service they provide. Having boundaries doesn’t mean being an asshole. Boundaries are about self-respect and valuing yourself enough protect your inner resources and be a good steward of your gifts, time and energy. Laying boundaries takes bravery. But people won’t like you less or think you’re crazy for having them. In fact, they’ll respect you more. And they’ll be more than willing to respect your boundaries if they know where they are. So, make it clear— for both of you. Go survey your territory and claim your domain. Protect it gently or fiercely, whatever is called for. Don’t let every customer, family member or friend hopscotch across your borders without your permission. Patrol your borders like a foot soldier, marching with courage and purpose. Meet those who attempt to transgress with firmness, but also kindness. And when your feelings sound the alarm that a boundary has been violated, retrace the line, carve it out a little more clearly and begin again.

BOOKS FOR Y
This week's review
TITLE: The Postnatal Depletion Cure AUTHOR: Dr Oscar Serrallach NUMBER OF PAGES: 304 EST. READ TIME: 6 hours and 3 minutes PRICE: $23.75 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: The Postnatal Depletion Cure is
an investigation into the depletion that occurs for mothers for months and even years after giving birth. Dr Oscar Serrallach, a Byron local explores how postnatal depletion is affecting women physically and emotionally and how we can reclaim our health post baby.
WHO IT'S FOR: Any woman who has given birth in the last ten years.
WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Full disclosure - I gave
birth to my son seven months ago and after a few months totally hit a wall. Emotionally and physically. Luckily Byron Bay is home to the wonderful Dr Oscar Serrallach whose book I was recommended. The Postnatal Depletion Cure not only contains a bunch of ‘aha!’ moments but provides practical advice for women to implement right away. Making sure that this fourth trimester isn’t all about the cute baby but about the mum’s recovery too. This is the new bible for new mothers. Forget about What to Expect When You’re Expecting. Oscar has revolutionised our perception of the fourth trimester.
NOTABLE QUOTE: “Know that this condition is real,
and I know there is no need for you to suffer. There is almost a subconscious badge of honor associated with a mom’s ability to juggle motherhood and child care with returning to work as soon as possible. Our Western culture has done mothers a great disservice by not honoring them on their road to recovery and giving them the time they need to adjust to the monumental changes in their lives.” This week's review written by Jessie Hilton @jessieahilton

Exhibition of Portraits by Luke Feeney NOVEMBER 23RD, 9AM / POPPED CREATIVE
@lightalchemistbyronbay has been flooding my feed as of late, and I’m not complaining. Luke Feeney has been producing some amazing photographic portraitures that reveal facial features that you not otherwise see. It is like a reverse negative effect, and it’s amazing. Popped Creative have really been utilising their new space in great ways, especially for local creatives, which is bound to perpetuate and encourage creativity in a really positive way. It seems to be an all-day affair, though drinks are served at 5pm, so if your smart, you’ll know when is best to go. See you there!
Rainbow Centre Festival
NOV 26 - DEC 1ST / 62 STUART ST, MULLUMBIMBY It’s a healthy food eating happy go lucky yogi’s paradise! And it’s being celebrated at the newly opened Rainbow Centre in Mullumbimby for a whole festive week of yoga, vegan food, community, dance and all things delightfully peaceful, not to mention speed dating yoga and tantric dance. The Rainbow Centre was born out of an intention to bring people together through positive and affirmative practices, to help people discover more than what it is that they know. Come celebrate The Rainbow Centre’s vision for creating community, celebrating life, and making a difference!

Q&A A Q U IC K C H
A T W IT H .. .
Morgan and Gemma of Saint Sister @SAINT_SISTER_
MULLUM MUSIC FEST SURE IS A TREAT, HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT IT? M: We can't wait to play Mullum
Music Fest. We really didn't expect to be able to travel to Australia with the first album so we're just delighted to be able to play a show so far from home.
HOW DOES TRADITIONAL IRISH MUSIC INFLUENCE YOUR SOUND? G: We're all influenced in some way by what we grew up with or surrounded ourselves in, and it's sometimes hard to separate yourself from that. I learnt a lot about music through trad and folk in my younger years and in my teens.
TELL US ABOUT THE FRUITION OF SHAPE OF SILENCE? M: It
follows a relationship, from the beginning stages, full of hope and optimism. As the songs begin to fracture and make way for interludes and segues, so does the relationship.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST MEMORABLE GIG TO DATE? G:
Probably the Olympia Theatre in Dublin a few weeks ago. Neither of us are from Dublin but it's where the band was born, so it always feels like a bit of a homecoming.
HOW IMPORTANT IS STAGE PRESENCE TO YOU? M: Stage
presence is really important but it can come in all sorts of guises. Some people suit a very deliberate surreal stage presence others can be just as engaging with a very honest stripped back kind of presence.
SORRY TO BE CLICHÉ, BUT WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST INSPIRATION AS MUSICIANS? M: I love listening to great lyrics. I’ll write them down and dwell on them for ages and more often than not they’ll inspire me to write something of my own. G: I take a lot of inspiration from watching other people perform live. Check out Saint Sister, playing both days at Mullum Music Fest
