Anonymous __________________________________________ After living here for 26 years, I now feel embarrassed of how dirty and disrespectful our streets have become. I mean that by so many uncool people think it is OK to dump their dirty old broken lounge, furniture, mattresses or whatever right on the streets. Byron Bay looks like a third world country at every residential corner you turn into. Irresponsible dumping! Are they temporary dwellers? Are they local? Do you call yourself a local if you trash our streets? My flatmate was moving out last month and didn’t want his old bed so he said he was going to leave it out the front of the house in Suffolk. He grew up here! I said…”That is not a cool idea! You will just be as irresponsible as the others”. He thought why not everyone else does it. I believe it is not recycling, it is pure laziness? I think Byron Shire council have made another massive mistake by not having their annual clean up, which might help the situation a little. Don’t you agree?

Mayor Simon Richardson __________________________________________ I agree that dumping of unwanted goods in the streets is not right. Property owners receive a bulk waste voucher with their July rates notices each year. This allows 150kg of bulk items to be dropped off at the Myocum Resource Recovery Centre for FREE. If you are renting, you can also get a voucher from the Mullumbimby admin office by bringing in your rental agreement. The urban kerbside pickup was stopped about 3 years ago due to the outburst of illegal dumping sites that occurred prior to the urban cleanup. Plus we found that the streets were left with huge piles of goods for weeks prior to the pickup. Not only did this look ordinary but the goods became scattered and created hazards. Metal appliances, excluding fridges, can be dropped off any time for free at Myocum. They are then recycled for scrap metal. Whilst the drop off at Myocum might not be possible for everyone, there is always the option to do an old fashion garage sale or list your unwanted items for free on Byron Bazaar. There are other alternatives to dumping your items on the street in the hope someone will take them away or making it someone else’s problem. If you see someone dumping goods in the reserves or parks, I urge you to report it to Council on 6626 7000.
