Thursday • 21 January • 2016 YOUR ECLECTIC MARKETPLACE WHERE GOODS AND SERVICES OF ALL KINDS ARE BARTERED, BOUGHT AND SOLD

PO BOX 880 • BYRON BAY • TEL: 02 6680 7158 • hello@byronbazaar.com • www.byronbazaar.com AROUND TOWN THIS WEEK

Flickerfest has a new home in Mullumbimby at the Civic Hall and this weekend it’s going to be on like Donkey Kong with 4 jam-packed sessions. Grab your mates and enjoy the best of the best short films. We are looking forward to seeing the local indigenous comedy called ‘Nan and a Whole Lot Of Trouble’ which was shot at Lismore. Friday night is the glam opening party with the Best of International Shorts and on Saturday our local finalists will be showcased with Byron All Shorts, followed by Best of Australian Shorts and then on Sunday it’s time for the global Short Laughs Comedy Programme. Hit up iq.org.au for tickets and all the info. Of course next Tuesday is Australia (Aus-straya) Day so it’s mandatory to don your thongs and eat a sausage or a lamington. The Rotary Clubs are doing Breakfast in the Park in Byron and Bruns and there are afternoon parties happening at the pool in Mullum, the Ocean Shores Public School and the Bangalow Tea Room. At Gaggin Park in Suffolk Park the Fire Brigade are putting on a free sausage sizzle, entertainment and giving away Australian flags. The Triple J Hottest 100 will also be cranking at the Beach Hotel in Byron and at the awesome beer garden at the Brunswick Heads Hotel. Have fun! Photography Credit: Daniel Ridgley Hewitt

Got something to say? - Well here's your chance ... Where Are All My Homos At

Lesbefriends __________________________________________

What’s with Byron’s limited gay events? There’s a large LGBTQI population, but very few fun filled attractions that cater to our gay community. For such an open minded town, were lacking in an “out n proud playground”. We love that Byron is so accepting of diversity! This is why we pose the question; why hasn’t this niche market been tapped into by local nightlife businesses yet? Coming into Australia’s festive summer season, it’s such a shame that queer folk need to travel far and wide to enjoy events like Mardi Gras, Midsumma and Pride. For a tourist hotspot that attracts gay travellers year round, we’d love to see a venue like the Brewery or Beachy host an “Open” night that celebrates and supports the acceptance of people with unconventional gender identities. As a group of young, same sex loving friends, we’d like to bump elbows with like minded people in a cool and fun setting. No, this is not a call for a hook-up hotspot or swingers party, we’d just like a venue where we can all chill out and chat with our fellow homos. LGBT events in Byron would not only lift the collective vibration, but would also contribute to boosting the local economy. If anyone reading this shares the same excitement that we do about creating a fun gay, lesbian and everything in between space, please reply to us by giving your 2 cents worth.

Congrats Lesbefriends, your submission has won you a $25 Get Toasted voucher! Email us at hello@byronbazaar.com to claim your prize.

Parking - To Risk Or Not To Risk It

Sonia __________________________________________

With a few errands to do I’ve started to change my car parking routine now that the meters have been introduced. I’m parking central to all my errands and using my legs more than driving. Today I parked on Marvell Street needing to get to Video Connection, Woolies, the bottle shop and Post Office. I’m half way to the video store when I realise I forgot to put my registration in the meter! S#%T!! Do I risk it and get my errands done, or not? My stress levels kick in. I decide to go half way - DVD’s returned, Woolies for cat food, and then I decide I better get back to the car...only to find two of the meters were out of order! All that stress and worry for nothing. I was in a great space after my morning meditation, yoga at Tallows and a swim. I take a few deep breaths and return to peace. Please bring back the parking sticker for locals. Less stress and puts the leg work where its required...with council and not with me.

Broke Back Blues

I was surprised and disgusted to hear that we had a rodeo coming to town last week, advertised as a “fun family event”. What’s more, despite the animal rights controversies of rodeo there seemed to be no protest presence at the event this year. Rodeos cause unnecessary trauma and injury to the animals involved in the name of “entertainment” and are an archaic and pointless show of human domination over animals. Rodeos are strongly opposed by animal rights groups worldwide and should be made illegal, as they are in countries such as the UK. There’s a lot of macho bravado involved in rodeo but in my book, real men don’t abuse animals. The human participants freely choose to take part and put themselves at risk, but the animals don’t have the luxury of choice. We should not be allowing this to take place, let alone showing up to support it with our families in tow. Please, people of Byron and beyond: open your eyes, educate yourselves and don’t support such blatant animal cruelty.

Events Guru After humble beginnings in 2008, our range of beers, led by our flagship Pacific Ale, have gained the attention of drinkers from one end of the country to the other, and have helped ignite a keen interest for independently owned Australian beer. We are on the search for a gun that knows how to make things happen and doesn’t mind getting their hands dirty. Working with the Creative and Community team, you’ll be responsible for making each Stone & Wood event as epic as it can possibly be. From the planning, the logistics, knowing where the equipment/props are and need to be, to the actual execution of our local/ interstate events and the evaluation; you’ll be across it, and in amongst it to make sure it happens right. Being organised, resourceful, a team player, a good communicator and embodying what Stone & Wood is all about is a given. You’ll be based out of the Byron brewery, but jumping on planes and driving across the border. To be considered for the role you will need: • 3 years (min) experience in event management • Experience in the beer/liquor industry • RSA certificate in multi states • Attention to detail • Ability to effectively prioritise and multi-task • Team player • Good communicator • Manual driver’s license • Craft beer enthusiast This will be a full time 12-month maternity contract starting in February. If you think you have what we are looking for, please send your resume and cover letter, explaining what you can bring to Stone & Wood, to: jobs@stoneandwood.com.au Applications close Wednesday the 27th of January, successful applicants will be contacted by Friday the 29th of January.
