tee (c’mon, we know you’ve still got it) and get yourself down to Lone Goat Gallery on Friday night for the 6pm opening of The Mambo Artists Now: To Destroy The World We Had to Save It, an exhibition of new works by eight of the original and most notorious Mambo artists: Matthew Martin, David McKay, Paul McNeil, Jim Mitchell, Reg Mombassa, Robert Moore, Jeff Raglus, and Gerry Wedd. If you can’t make it, you’ve got plenty of time to catch the exhibition, which runs until 19 February.

Friday evening will also see the Balter gang throw a bit of a shindig at the Hotel Brunswick to ring in summer. Mick and Durbo will be there, with tunes courtesy of The Swamps and DJ Salty Beats from 5pm. We’re also told there’ll be a ‘tinata’ (tinnie piñata), and giveaways including beer for a year. Get in on it!

Christmas is just around the corner now, and Lennox will be getting right into the spirit on Sunday with the annual Lennox Head Carols in the Park. The family-friendly event gets going at Williams Reserve from 5pm, with food stalls, raffles, fireworks and more. Finally, if you work in hospo and haven’t checked out Locura (aka the new LaLa Land) yet, Monday is the night to go, with free entry for the industry and cheap eats and drinks every Monday from 5pm.

WEIRD
SITUATIONS

surprising disruptions of your plans or routines on Friday and Saturday while Venus is opposite Uranus. Both planets are on their very last degree and therefore especially drastic in their expression. The need for personal freedom may override the desire to keep relationships harmonious. Late on Saturday Mercury retrograde, the master of misunderstandings and detours, moves back into deep, meaningful and intense Scorpio. Issues from late October might have to be reassessed, and during the next few days there might be startling twists and turns. A Sun/Mars square (exact on Monday) may inflame difficult situations and sparks could fly! Luckily a Mercury/Chiron water trine follows and makes room for healing and transformation. Venus, the love-goddess, moves into Scorpio on Monday. She is still retracing the steps of her late retrograde movement for another two weeks. She may be in a reflective mood, but she is still fiercely passionate and strangely mysterious in her ways. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

Just like last week, the 5 of Wands is drawn! It symbolises strife, irritation and setbacks. Choose your battles and arguments wisely because your reactivity might make difficult situations worse; proceed consciously and cautiously. A project that is physically demanding or a gym-workout may help you to let go of some pent-up energy.
h TAURUS
The Emperor Tarot card represents effective, logical and masculine leadership. The power that is inherent comes naturally and is used for the greater good of all. This week you might finalise important business negotiations that set your life onto a new course. The Emperor is an excellent card to meditate upon, concerning personal and professional empowerment.
k LEO
The 4 of Cups indicates that you may have spent more energy than you can afford, and as a result you might feel flat and lethargic. Things that once gave you great joy and satisfaction now look stale. This is the perfect week to re-evaluate your situation and to find a new, life-affirming perspective.
l VIRGO
a LIBRA
e AQUARIUS
j CANCER
b SCORPIO
The Ace of Wands represents hot, fiery energy, not unlike a volcanic eruption. Therein lies the creative but also destructive potential. Make sure you funnel this intense force into a worthwhile project that expands your consciousness and opens up your life to greater possibilities.
POSITIVE CHANGE FOR MARINE LIFE
The 2 of Wands describes inner tumult and a struggle to find direction. With Sun, Jupiter and retrograde Mercury (until Saturday) in your sign you might feel pressured to make big decisions, but somehow it does not feel right because the time is not yet ripe. Before you move forward you have to regain your inner balance.
d CAPRICORN
The Prince of Wands is often called ‘Prince Charming’; with him on your side you are confident, passionate and daring. You know how to make a good impression and your can-do attitude inspires others to support your mission. This may be a highly creative and romantic week!
i GEMINI
c SAGITTARIUS
The Temperance Tarot card describes the art of balancing opposing forces and apparent paradoxes in your life. Instead of seeing things as black and white, you may find many other shades and colours as you merge and blend different points of view within yourself. You may be able to transcend long-held judgements and free yourself in the process.
The Prince of Swords represents a freedom fighter who focuses on liberation of the self. He examines his wants, needs, drives and motivations. Through the process of intense self-enquiry you may identify certain beliefs and habits that have outlived their usefulness, and which you are ready to replace with behaviour that serves you better.

The Fool Tarot card symbolises a fresh beginning. It inspires your ability to give birth to new forms and ways of being from a place of courage, wonder and anticipation. You won’t buy into old fears and limitations any more, and the love for adventure may lead you into uncharted territory. This may be a mystical, transformational and highly creative journey.
The 10 of Cups brings great well-being and serenity. This is the perfect week for a delightful get-together with like-minded and lighthearted friends and family. Your social grace touches everyone you come in contact with. Some old disagreements might dissolve by embracing diversity.
The Princess of Wands is the archetype of a free and liberated spirit. With her on your side, this is the week to overcome limiting beliefs, worries and fears, to emerge cheerful, confident and ready to embark on a new mission. This is potentially as much a creative adventure as a spiritual one, and success is a given.
f PISCES
The Wheel of Fortune speaks of opportune times that expand your personal vision. You may have an enlightening ‘aha’ moment or a peakexperience that expands your overall perspective. You know that you are at a turning point and with a sense of destiny you contemplate your choices and make informed decisions.

DEAR KEENWA, So, menstruation. Talk about libido! But what are your thoughts on period sex? Am I informally participating in witchcraft? I'm so into it, but am worried my new flame will leave me if I even suggest the act. To do or not to do? - Red Bed
DEAR RED BED, Apparently the health benefits outweigh the mess. And thanks to Twilight and other teen vamp trends, word on the street is, fellas are into it. These are the men of the future. Not only does period sex help alleviate cramps, shorten your cycle, and create deeper intimacy, it will greatly contribute to savings on organic coconut oil. Now what Byron fella, doesn't love a bargain? Dark towels on deck. Shower at the ready. Boom. Final thought though, contrary to popular thought, remember you can still make mini vampires during this time.
DEAR KEENWA, WTF is sacred union? Marriage is marriage right? You choose the one to be your shit sandwich, buy a house, get into debt, stress about it daily, have children; and try and avoid the sixty percent of them that end in divorce. Or am I missing something? - Anti Shiva

I think the hippy version means you are committed to searching for your twin flame which still feeds the cinematic romantic hoo-ha of “the one”. In this version it's less about “you complete me,” and more about “I complete myself,” and you add some fun and interest to what I already have. I think you also need to take responsibility for your own wounds / feelings / thoughts / triggers instead of blaming them, as well as being committed to honesty instead of everlasting love. This may sometimes include 'fessing up on wanting to bone the checkout chick at Woolies. Good luck with that.

This week's mantra
ARE THE THINGS THAT MATTER MOST TO YOU GETTING YOUR LEFTOVERS? Excessive apologising seems harmless enough. But it’s Are the most important things in your life getting your leftovers? Are the people and passions in your life that matter most to you being treated as an afterthought? Do you choose to scrub your toilet or fold towels instead of building cubby houses with your kids? Do you give most of your attention to the customer who complains— or to the customer who is loyal and devoted? Did you have time to post on Instagram but felt you were too busy to text back your best friend? Do you run out of time to meditate in the morning because you woke up and scrolled through your socials first thing? Do you sit down with a clear mind and fresh ideas, but then clear your inbox, pay some bills and do a bit of online shopping instead of writing that story that’s waiting inside of you? Do you watch TV instead of throwing down a drop cloth and pulling out your pallet and paintbrushes? Do you stare into your screen at night, scrolling through photos of people you don’t know instead of looking into the eyes of someone who matters deeply? Your attention, time, and energy are currency. Where are you spending them? Where are you investing your most precious resources? Are your actions moving you toward or away from what (or who) matters most?

BOOKS FOR Y
This week's review
TITLE: This Is Going to Hurt AUTHOR: Adam Kay NUMBER OF PAGES: 288 EST. READ TIME: 3 hours and 32 minutes PRICE: $15.98 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Adam Kay signs up to study medicine
as a young adult fresh out of high school, unaware of how much his life is about to change. When he is thrust into the life of a junior doctor and encouraged to keep a journal of his day-to-day happenings things get real. Years later, now a comedian (and no longer a doctor) Adam finds his medical diary and publishes his stories, with some additional embellishments.
WHO IT'S FOR: Surprisingly this book is for anyone. Medicine and health has affected all of us in one way or another.
WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: This book is laugh out loud
funny. It also has a tonne of heart and moments of truth. This is Going to Hurt shines light on underfunded hospitals and underpaid doctors. In amongst this hilarious memoir are harsh realities of what it’s really like to work in medicine and the realities patients face when under their care.
NOTABLE QUOTE: “Tuesday, 5 July 2005. Trying to work
out a seventy-year-old lady’s alcohol consumption to record in the notes. I’ve established that wine is her poison. Me: ‘And how much wine do you drink per day, would you say?’ Patient: ‘About three bottles on a good day.’ Me: ‘OK . . . And on a bad day?’ Patient: ‘On a bad day I only manage one.”

Louis Theroux Premiere Film: Love Without Limits DECEMBER 12TH, 7PM / BYRON THEATRE
For hundreds of years, romantic relationships in Western society have been based on the idea of monogamy: two people, together, forever. But with nearly half of all US marriages ending in divorce, perhaps the traditional model is no longer fit for purpose. In Love Without Limits, Louis Theroux travels to Portland, Oregon, the heart of a movement seeking to re-write the rule book on how we conduct intimate relationships and experience family life. Portland, whose city motto is Keep Portland Weird, is seen as the US capital of polyamory and ethical nonmonogamy, the practice of openly and transparently having multiple relationships that go further than just sex. Come see a fascinating portrayal into the future of progressive relationships and how the brilliant mind of Louis Theroux investigates this idea. Tickets and info at: byroncentre.com.au
