On Christmas Eve, Barrio Eatery & Bar will be celebrating Noche Buena (an important Latin tradition involving family and food) with its first annual Christmas Eve Fiesta. Kicking off at 4pm, the feast will begin with picadas (canapes) followed by Argentine favourites prepared on a traditional parilla (barbecue) and asado (fire pit). The price (adults $65, kids over three $20) includes a welcome cocktail by Brookie’s Gin, as well as a few festive surprises on the night! Book your spot by emailing gather@barriobyronbay.com.au. If a vegan Christmas feast is more up your alley, No Bones has you covered. The Byron restaurant will be putting on a vegan BBQ feast from 1-4pm on Christmas Day, with the $90 price tag including champers on arrival. Call 6680 7418 to book. Whatever you get up to these holidays, we hope you have a rad one!

DEAR KEENWA, I've a few concerns about Santa this year. Like, does his flying sleigh have a carbon offset program I can make a nominal donation to? Does he deliver gifts without wrapping paper? (seems so wasteful). Is he really a good guy? - I still believe
DEAR I STILL BELIEVE, Whilst us Byronites are worried whether our keep cup gift is hand made or has travelled low miles to Santos, the black communities in Holland are worried about white extremists. Over there, Santa has an African child slave called Black Pete as his helper. He drags him around, the chains on his ankles jangling cheerfully, as he wishes everyone a very white Christmas. People dress up in blackface to get into the holiday spirit, and wonder why anyone is offended. Those Dutchies are freaky you may be thinking, yet recently an Indigenous man in our own country was rejected for not being caucasian enough.

DEAR KEENWA, Have men only groups been banned? In a world of equality, how come 50% of the population are excluded? We men also need empowerment, help with mental health, and start up business advice. Not In Circle Of Trust
DEAR NOT IN CIRCLE OF TRUST, I totally agree with you. If any man in the Shire actually started something, it most definitely deserves a celebration meeting. And show me a Byron man that isn't mental. Wait, could these two facts be connected? Could the overly feminine traits of fellas in this joint who go with the flow like the tides, want to howl at the moon and shake their kundalini, as well as talk about their feelings all the damn time, be what is preventing them from fulfilling their masculinity and getting jobs? I think they do have an establishment for men's circles in the rest of Australia - the pub. You do need a wage and therefore a job to enter, as well as a hard earned thirst.Â

This week's mantra
THERE IS NO MONOPOLY ON FRESH STARTS. As you look forward to a brand new year, it probably brings up all the fresh feels - clean starts, blank slates and new beginnings. For many of us, we sense that our whole year hinges on how we wake up on that first day of the first month of the new year. We’re energised by the formality of that kind of official fresh start. And so we begin with shimmering intentions rooted in the desire to do better. We set our sights on giving up chocolate or taking up yoga or building a business or making a baby or shifting some weight or sitting to meditate. We buy cookbooks or a pair of sneakers or make a spreadsheet or live on juice for a week. But for most of us, our resolve fades like a bad dyejob on day 5. We lose sight of our goals. We goof up. We forget why it mattered. We give up. We lose touch with our instinct to evolve. The reason we lose touch? We’re not dipping back into those fresh feels often enough. Here’s the truth. January 1st doesn’t have a monopoly on fresh starts. Beginning again is always available to you. The clear mindset and lively energy of a new beginning are always there. You just need to dip in. So rather than only starting fresh once a year, how about touching base with those fresh feels on the daily with a morning ritual? It can be as simple as meditation, gratitude and intention setting. The keys: touch base with yourself, connect with that matters most, check in with your goals. Something as simple as that allows you to harness the energy of your higher self and yoke it to your deepest desires. Every single day. Not just once a year. P.S. Need a hand getting started? Pop over to my website for my Morning Ritual Guide + Day Planner.

Mercury is the first planet to turn retrograde and it occurs exactly on the day when Uranus changes signs (6th of March). This retro motion takes place in Pisces and lasts for about three weeks as usual. Amazing ideas may be perceived; creative, spiritual and intuitive outside-the box solutions might pop up everywhere. Not all of them will stand the test of time and some of them might cause a lot of confusion. Deception on a massive scale is possible and highly likely. Be prepared for things to take longer than normal because of misunderstandings or travel delays. Other Mercury retrograde periods happen in mid-July (Leo and Cancer) and in November (Scorpio).
lluf y
Throughout 2019 Neptune in Pisces dances with Jupiter in Sagittarius (square) and Saturn in Capricorn (sextile). The most intense times of their connections are the second half of January and mid-June, when both of the transits are exact within days. During this time it is not advisable to make far-reaching decisions. Neptune is the archetype for creative and spiritual development, for dreams and ideals, but also for confusion and deception. The square to Jupiter exaggerates all of the above and even if you feel very trusting, knowledgeable and optimistic it is not worth taking big risks. Saturn’s sextile to Neptune adds a spiritual and devotional flavour. Beliefs, ideologies and religious convictions may become very important. Saturn in Capricorn stands for perseverance, discipline and hard work. He brings grounding, but his rigid tunnel-vision may prove restrictive and counter-productive. Authorities may call for severe austerity measures that affect people who are already marginalised. Be prepared to sift through a lot of fake news to find the truth! On the 18th of February Chiron moves into Aries where he resides until 2027. We had a little taste of this warrior archetype during the middle of last year. Chiron symbolises the wounded healer or the wound that cannot heal. Chiron stays longer in Aries than in other signs, due to his erratic orbit. He is fired up and ready to be a hero or pioneer, heralding change and encouraging action. This transit especially affects people with planets in the early degrees of the fire signs Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, as well as the cardinal signs of Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. Interestingly Chiron and Uranus travel parallel to each other for years to come, often forming an exact semisextile which might prove highly resourceful and insightful. Uranus moves into Taurus on the 6th of March and takes seven years to traverse this territory. The planet for revolution, sudden breakthrough and innovation has nothing much in common with Taurus who values safety and desires stability more than anything. We also had a little taste of that last winter. Monetary systems may experience instability, agricultural reform may be on the agenda and upheaval might come from unexpected places and causes. What we value, and the ways and means we establish security and comfort, might have to be updated. People with planets in the early degrees of the earth signs Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn might be personally affected by this transit during 2019. If you have planets in the early degrees of the fixed signs Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius you might have to learn more flexibility. On the 2nd of December Jupiter moves into Capricorn where he resides for about a year. He shares this practical and organised, but a bit rigid, flavour with Saturn and Pluto. They have the same ambitions and work-ethics! Mountains can be moved, literally and metaphorically, during this time which lasts until the end of 2020. We are also called to look at the past for future solutions and the idea of ‘less is more’ might enter mainstream consciousness. A Jupiter/Uranus trine starts to build as soon as Jupiter enters earthy Capricorn and is exact on the 15th of December. This is an expansive, enthusiastic time; it calls for a rather experiential and unorthodox approach to any long-standing problem. New ideas and insights might bring sudden breakthroughs, and new perspectives evolve. As unexpected opportunities unfold it might be possible to take a quantum leap or shift an old paradigm. Since this transit happens in earth signs, agriculture or the way we value and protect our environment might shift. There could also be sudden windfalls and amazing gains in the finance sector, especially regarding new monetary systems. The eclipse season starts on January 6th with a partial Solar eclipse (New Moon in Capricorn) which is not visible from here. Sun, Moon and Saturn align in serious Capricorn, where Mercury and Pluto also reside. Commitment and loyalties might be tested in the time between eclipses. On the 21st of January the Lunar eclipse in Cancer follows (Full Moon in Cancer), also not visible. Relationship issues may be highlighted; irritation and conflict could escalate. The next set of eclipses starts with a total Solar eclipse on the 3rd of July (New Moon in Cancer). Two weeks later on the 17th of July a partial Lunar eclipse (Full Moon in Capricorn) follows. This one is the only visible eclipse of this year and you can observe it in the early morning from about 4:40 am. The time between these eclipses might be full of inner tensions that express themselves in outer struggles. On Boxing Day 2019 we are graced with another Solar eclipse, again with the New Moon in Capricorn. This third eclipse may have a huge impact, because of its proximity to Jupiter and the enormous energetic push of up to five celestial bodies in Capricorn. Wishing you all a happy and fulfilling New Year!

RECOMMENDATION?
Close to every book by Australian author Alison Lester seem to be winners. For now, I'm so fine with reading Are We There Yet? and Magic Beach an obligatory four times each before bed. HOW TO GET THEM OFF THE SCREENS? It'll change in time but we're learning it's just better not to offer them in the first

place. It's a good chance for us to lead by example and switch off too! ENCOURAGING WHAT, FOR KIDS? Read books, grow your own veggies and brush your teeth! EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY? We're all for a family bush walk, stop and listen to what’s around. BEST BRIBERY TRICK? Foot massage. Works for the kids, and I'm quite partial to the same bribery in reverse.
TELL US IN THE SHORTEST WAY POSSIBLE WHY IT’S SO GREAT BEING A DAD? You've had a part in making this insanely interesting little human. It'll blow your mind on the regular, no better feeling!

Many Thanks by ‘The Well’ at Sustainable Valley
DECEMBER 20TH, 6PM / 7 GREVILLEA ST, BYRON BAY This month The Well presents ‘Many Thanks’ – an event that is all about generosity, giving and receiving thanks and celebrating the year that has been. We will be doing a deep dive into what it means to be generous in business and how to do the delicate dance of being generous to others AND to yourself. We will come together to connect, share a snack and a delicious non-boozey drink. After a relaxing chat, we will settle in for a panel discussion (panel members TBA). Ticketing information at eventbrite.com. Lets’ say thanks and goodbye to the year in style!
Christmas at Di Vino
DECEMBER 25TH, 12PM / 2 FLETCHER ST, BYRON BAY Christmas is food and family and friends and feeling so full the whole day that you expand your waist line which allows you to just keep stuffing your gob, yes, this is what Christmas is, but for the Italians, I think they have a little more style, like eating smaller portions and slowly at that. Welcome to 'il pranzo di natale' one of the biggest feasts of the year in Italy. During this day, the families join together for a feast with good company and wine. Di Vino is hosting a Christmas to never forget, delivering an authentic experience in respect of the Italian tradition. For information and ticketing head to www.divinobyron.com

Edwina Bevan A RECENT GRADUATE OF A CERTIFICATE III IN PERMACULTURE AT THE BYRON COMMUNITY COLLEGE
WHAT IS THE MOST SURPRISING THING YOU HAVE LEARNT ABOUT PERMACULTURE? Permaculture is an actual way
of being with the world, not just about the gardening aspect or just growing food. It’s a way of living in harmony with this incredible planet and all who reside on her. TELL US A FUN FACT? Guinea pigs make fantastic lawn mowers! 1 guinea pig can eat approx 1 mtr/sq of lawn a day (and their poo is great fertilizer for the garden).
HOW CAN PERMACULTURE TRANSLATE INTO OUR DAILY LIVES? The three central ethics to permaculture are:
Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share. I believe if we can live our daily lives with these in our minds and hearts, and do the little things at home and in our communities. HOW DO SPIRAL GARDENS WORK? The spiral garden is raised in the centre and spirals down to ground level. This creates lots of microclimates, in that some areas of the spiral will get more sunlight, others more shade. The lower parts of the spiral will hold more moisture while the more raised parts are drier and better drained. The spiral enables us to grow plants with different needs in a smaller space. WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU AND YOUR GREEN THUMB? I have just started volunteering at Lifeforce Farm in Mullumbimby to gain some more hands on experience in a certified organic environment and learn as much as I can as I go along.
IN EDWINA’S EYES, WHAT DO WE ALL NEED TO DO MORE OF?
Just stay in the present moment and not get lost in our mind space and just do the very best you can with everything you do, every day and keep life simple. Also, we need to laugh and love more too. For local courses in Permaculture and more head to byroncollege.org.au
