cracking barbecue weather this weekend, and just as well, as the Bangalow BBQ & Bluegrass Festival returns to the Bangalow Showgrounds on Saturday with barbecue competitions, $10 tasting plates, and plenty of bluegrass from 10am-5pm (entry from $68). The Old Time Variety Show also returns on Friday night ($48), with profits from both events supporting local arts and cultural activities. For more info and tickets, visit bbqbluegrass.com.au

Over in Byron, there are a couple of good gigs to choose from on Saturday night, with Sydney rock outfit The Preatures bringing their ‘Magick’ tour to The Brewery (supported by Triple J fave Ali Barter) from 8pm ($34.70), and ‘90s funk rockers Skunkhour celebrating the 25th anniversary of their debut self-titled album at The Northern from 8:30pm ($50). Head to oztix.com.au for tickets to both gigs. Sunday brings more tunes, with Corona SunSets presenting Aussie vibemaker Touch Sensitive at the Beachy (for free!) from 7pm. There’ll also be some free Corona x Parley reusable totes goin’ ‘round. On Tuesday, the first session of a six-week Mindfulness for Impact workshop series ($245) led by Mind and Body Leadership Coach Erin Tetarenko kicks off at Sustainable Valley. TITLE: Big Magic AUTHOR: Elizabeth Gilbert NUMBER OF PAGES: 304 EST. READ TIME: 2 hours and 57 minutes PRICE: $19.99 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Elizabeth Gilbert. You know, the woman who wrote the crazy successful book Eat, Pray, Love? Big Magic is her non-fiction book about creativity and how you can harness it. She talks about ideas, inspiration and how creatives can bring back the magic into their work. WHO IT'S FOR: Creatives in need of inspiration and writers who have writer’s block.
WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Elizabeth Gilbert knows what she is talking about. She’s published many books, many of them successful, a few of them not. She has taken her failure and made it into something bright and beautiful. Gotten back on the horse, as it were. Her words are simple and insightful. Big Magic is easily digestible and doesn’t read as a bossy guide on how to create. Elizabeth’s advice? Just do it!

NOTABLE QUOTE: “Recognizing that people's reactions
don't belong to you is the only sane way to create. If people enjoy what you've created, terrific. If people ignore what you've created, too bad. If people misunderstand what you've created, don't sweat it. And what if people absolutely hate what you've created? What if people attack you with savage vitriol, and insult your intelligence, and malign your motives, and drag your good name through the mud? Just smile sweetly and suggest - as politely as you possibly can - that they go make their own f****ing art. Then stubbornly continue making yours.”

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST
RETROGRADE MERCURY IS PAINFULLY
slow right now, but the good news is that the cosmic messenger is turning direct on Monday. If you are habitually result-driven, you could end up quite frustrated! Nevertheless, as during the last few weeks, it is the perfect time to revise a creative project and pay meticulous attention to details. If you are eager to initiate a new project or phase of your life, it would be best to hold your horses at least until midnext week, when Mars turns direct again. It is also a good idea to factor in extra time if you travel. A beautifully inspiring Jupiter/Neptune water trine is exact on Sunday. It has been with us, more or less, since December 2017 and comes to its last culmination now. It may enhance your creative-spiritual perception and a feeling of oneness with the world. It encourages compassionate action and can bring great fulfilment whether you are giving or receiving. A Mercury/Venus sextile, also on Sunday, adds desire for harmonious relationships and peace-making. The weekend is best used for something that makes your heart vibrate on a higher level; or maybe you want to reach out to someone to find new alignment with them. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

THE BAY SITTERS
g ARIES
The Moon is the Tarot card that most inspires soul-searching and contemplation. Unconscious motives and unrealistic ideas may muddle up your brain temporarily; at the same time you might feel very receptive to your environment and to new ideas. Allow yourself to rest and consider before you act.
h TAURUS
The Princess of Swords shows her feistiness if she is cornered; she is absolutely willing and able to fight for her freedom and dignity. The astro flavour of this week might soften this approach a little, but still – you might be a force to be reckoned with and you may surprise people!
k LEO
The 2 of Cups is the quintessential heart card. Within yourself it helps you to accept yourself unconditionally and allows you to move beyond the hard inner critic. In relationships, and especially if you are lucky enough to have a beloved, it may inspire you to offer your love freely from the abundance of your overflowing heart.
c SAGITTARIUS
The Princess of Disks indicates a truly creative time, especially the conception and gestation phase of it. A part of you might want to convince yourself that you have to produce or manifest something quickly. However, really amazing outcomes sometimes take a bit longer to manifest than you expect…
d CAPRICORN
l VIRGO
The 7 of Wands indicates the necessity to gather courage, in order to stand up for yourself and for what you believe in. Speak your truth and don’t doubt yourself. You might be surprised how good it feels to honour your vision and to demonstrate that you have a backbone!
The Empress is the quintessential Earth Mother who loves, protects and nurtures all living beings. When you allow yourself to be one with nature and your feminine energy, you can support yourself and others in the most benevolent ways. Take a moment to reflect on the love that is all around you and within you.
The 3 of Disks suggests a down to earth, practical way to attend to daily life, business and projects. To the Gemini mind this may sound a bit boring and too much like routine or chores. However if you stick to it, great results might be waiting for you. Teamwork is encouraged and makes things a bit more interesting.
a LIBRA
e AQUARIUS
j CANCER
b SCORPIO
i GEMINI
The Knight of Disks displays a certain weariness; he is often overworked but settles for small gains. This week it may pay off for you to focus on your financial wellbeing and ask for what you are worth. If that’s not possible take charge of the situation and find ways to work smarter rather than harder.

BY GISELA
The Tower Tarot card appears when things are beyond your control. All you can do is accept sudden change and release any resistance to it. The more you hold on to outdated ideas and principles, the more pain you create for yourself! From chaos a new order will emerge soon…
The 4 of Swords suggests taking time off from your business and any other things you have been preoccupied with. As you retreat into you own private sphere you have a chance to de-stress and allow your mind to rest. From this place truce-making, negotiation or conflict resolution come much easier.
This week the 6 of Wands promises success and acknowledgement. As a humanitarian you are not only interested in your personal gain; you’d rather create better circumstances for all involved. Therefore your ultimate achievement is creating win-win situations, and you are good at it.
f PISCES
With the Knight of Swords drawn you might feel restless and eager to move forward this week. The current astro flavour however does not support wilful action. You fare best if you focus your mind on clarifying your ideas, making concrete plans and checking facts, so hold your horses just a little bit longer!

DEAR KEENWA, My friends tell me I'm hopelessly devoted to the honeymoon phase of relationships. In the past four years, I've never had a love for longer than six months. Help! Everyone says if you stick through the hard part it will pay off, but why not move onto greener pastures? What's wrong with being a hedonist? Heart- Eyed Emoji
DEAR HEART- EYED EMOJI, I hear ya. People snore, and make sucking noises when they eat (something I'll never make peace with personally) but we are relative beings, here to continue the species and replicate, which is why our biology makes love so damn enjoyable and also why we're less likely to find fault with our partners in the early stages. The thing is, apparently addictions aren't that healthy longterm. I'm wondering if you spent as much time working on your commitment issues or fear of being seen in your own boring habits, as you do looking for the next 'one' whether you might just bag one longtermie yet.

DEAR KEENWA,
IRONING PROFESSIONALLY DONE
DEAR MILLENNIAL MUG,
HYDE & STONE
Yep, this sounds like a serial killer if I ever saw one. Who the hell does she think she is, is there not any privacy in this world? Of course she probs wants to know straight up if you're a white supremacist or eat glutenous white bread, but back in my day we got to know peeps a-la-natural, like in real time – linear time, not the online time where the romance takes place in the five hours you rush home and stalk them after your first meeting, than act surprised when they relay all the same stories that you've seen on their feed. Call me old fashioned but technology seems to be the murderer of intimacy, the ol' whodunnit of efficiency killing the erotic.
Affordable prices start as little as $45 for a min. 2HRS when you just can't find time to get your ironing done. Please call Cris on 0406 135 820

This week's mantra
FREEDOM IS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CHOICE
Choice is difficult by design. Because the choice is a crossroads. An intersection of options that can escalate into a crisis of uncertainty. Confronting the choice demands that you address the thing you’ve been circumnavigating like a perilous outcropping. It stops the music on the dance of evasion and challenges you to square off with the thing you’ve been avoiding, postponing, putting off, or pushing down. Sometimes it’s a question of how badly you want it. Sometimes it’s a question of how deeply you don’t. Sometimes it’s a question that’s not a question but a pretence - one option masquerading as two. Procrastination is futile. If you avoid the choice, it will hang around, patiently waiting for an opportunity to insert itself into the curriculum of your growth. When you finally face it, when you’re called to commit to an answer, your confidence might evaporate. You might feel adrift. Your voice may shake and your bones may rattle in response. Your hand may hesitate as you draw a boundary or sign on the line. You might play a few raucous rounds of second-guessing. But all of this hesitation, wavering, alternating and waffling is unnecessary. Because freedom is on the other side of the choice. So don’t be held hostage by hesitation. Choose. No matter how robust the resistance seems. The nature of progress is to move through resistance. Challenging choices are presented not to bury you, but to elevate you. To strengthen your resolve. To clarify your aim. To refine your fluency in the language of your instincts. Committing to your choice is a doorway into the future. A choice is a call to dive through the resistance, commit to what’s next and rise up to meet it. So make that damn choice. You got this.

Buy a beer for a farmer - drought fundraiser. 5:30PM FRIDAY 17TH AUG / THE NORTHERN
By now we’ve all heard about the drought across southern Australia, and we aren’t no stranger to a drought as a country. 2018 has seen the second driest Autumn on record, and our farmers are in dire need of water and support. Tomorrow night, The Northern is hosting a fundraiser to do just that. They will have two kegs from Stone and Wood with raffles and prizes to be won. Let’s show our support and head to the Northern this Friday to ‘buy a farmer a beer’. All proceeds will go to buyabale.com.au
Introductory beekeeping workshop with Willow and Ally.
10AM – 4PM SATURDAY 18TH AUG / THE FARM BYRON BAY Did you know that if all the bees in the world die, humans will not survive? So, perhaps it’s time to start learning how to prolong the lives of our delightful honey makers. The Farm at Byron Bay is hosting an all-inclusive backyard beekeeping course created to teach you the basics in keeping your own honeybees. Participants will learn the practical skills to effectively manage a beehive, about the biology of bees, their seasonal cycle and behaviour, the history of human interaction with bees, types of hives, and obligations as a beekeeper in your state and how to become a registered beekeeper. You’ll be just as busy as the bees. For tickets and more thefarmbyronbay.com.au

PLASTIC FREE Mermaid Healthy choices, healthy body, healthy oceans With Kate Nelson
BAG BAN BULLS*#T Last year in an unexpected act of environmental stewardship Coles, Woolies and a few other supermarkets announced they would ban plastic bags to show their deep reverence for the Earth. Turns out the championed bans were less about conservation and more attributed to an epic team of trend forecasters. The folks who actually have the resources to make a change, stuffed it and insolently stacked thick, reusable plastic bags to be sold for pocket change where complimentary light-weight bags hung only weeks ago. Perhaps the reusable plastic bags are a stepping stone for people to build the habit to bring their own bags. There was such backlash, despite the option for reusables, that many stores flip-flopped on their much celebrated ban and started handing out the thicker plastic bags for free. We didn’t just need these loaded companies with all the influence and power to wipe out their plastic bags, we need them to phase out plastic wrapped produce, triple packed meals, individually wrapped snacks. The whole store inventory needs revision. The food industry needs redesign. In the mean time, shop at the health shops that stock local produce. Shop at the farmer’s markets. Leave your plastic packaging at the checkout and your fruit stickers on the fruit shelves. Vote with your dollar and make small acts of resistance. With you a part of it, change will come. Good vibes, plastic free tips and to sign up for my How to Quit Plastic book go to iquitplastics.com or @plasticfreemermaid

Paul Crebar @PLASTICFREEBYRON
WHAT IS PLASTIC FREE BYRON? Plastic Free Byron is an association of organizations working together to minimize single-use plastic in the Byron Shire.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAMPAIGN, 31 ACTIONS IN 31 DAYS? We’ve got a kick-plastic-butt directory of over 200 businesses in the community who either need a congratulations or need encouragement to reduce their service of single use plastic.
61% OF FOOD AND BEVERAGE BUSINESSES IN BYRON HAVE GONE SINGLE USE PLASTIC FREE. HOW CAN WE ENCOURAGE THE OTHER 39%? Go to our directory, check out the
businesses you visit and if they need a solution – click the link to be taken straight to their social media pages! Every business wants to please their customer so the customer has the power to make the change.
ADVERTISE HERE 0487 003 765
WHAT OTHER PROJECTS AND CAMPAIGNS DO YOU RUN? We
run a plastic bag reduction program giving tourists reusable bags by providing them to hotels and accommodation providers, and we run an education program for local primary schools to get crafty to make their own solutions to plastic waste.
WHAT ARE SOME EDUCATIONAL INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS PROMOTING PLASTIC FREE LIVING? Plastic Free July, Take 3 and Clean Coast Collective.
THREE SIMPLE TIPS FOR REDUCING OUR PLASTIC CONSUMPTION? 1) Visit our directory – make 3
suggestions to 3 businesses! 2) The next time you get a single-use plastic item, ask the business if they have the alternative. If they don’t sigh and tell them you would love to see them get the alternative in instead! 3) Buy bulk food.
