Byron Bay Guitar Festival returns to the Brewery on Saturday and Sunday, with 25 performances (by the likes of British India and Ash Grunwald) and five workshops packed into this year’s schedule. Tickets will set you back $50 for each day, or $90 for both (byronbayguitarfestival. com). Up the road, Hotel Brunswick invites you to dust off your lederhosen for a day of Oktoberfesting on Saturday, complete with a Balter beer stall, a wiener eating comp, and a ‘major’ prize for the best dressed punter.

Back in Byron, the Shire’s own Bunny Racket will be performing at Byron Theatre from 11am-noon (tickets $20), with King Bunny and his gang of fluffy punk rock friends ready to get kids (big and small) groovin’ through ‘till Monday.

DEAR KEENWA, I haven't seen my mum for days. Often, I wake in the middle of the night to her shadow at the kitchen table, illuminated by the light of her phone. She often DMs me feel good quotes and poems, so she must love me, right? How can I be sure? I'm eight years old, and still very much trying to wrap my head around millennial parents. - Child of Instagram

DEAR CHILD OF INSTAGRAM, It sounds as if it's time to negotiate some phone-free time in your house, and win your mum back, tiger. Here's a starting point for you, perhaps you could gently suggest she put her phone down during meal times, or whenever you need her for homework or school bullying. Don't be afraid to practice tough love with this lot, if you want fast results, you could set up a sticker chart or confiscate her phone if she breaches the conditions.

DEAR KEENWA, I’ve been chatting to this epic babe online for a few weeks and she's actually going to be in The Bay this weekend! Problem is, I can feel a cold sore coming on. Tingling lips, but no actual symptoms as yet. Do I really need to tell her? I don't wanna blow my chances of a future together, and besides we might not even work out, anyway right? - Gob Smacked

DEAR GOB SMACKED, Although one can apparently have a good life with herpes, I have been wanting to coordinate an online register of perpetrators, whom at one stage were victims I understand, where we can Google potential partners names on the crusty database. But this is about more than a terminal illness. It's about honesty, divine timing, and reading the universe's signs. She's obviously not the one. But if she is, she'll love you warts and all.

This week's mantra

ADJUST YOUR TOLERANCE FOR FAILURE. "What would you do if you could not fail?" has its merits as a big picture question, helpful for generating big picture answers. It reminds us of just how large a role failure plays in our dreams. It pulls back the curtain on our fear of failure and offers a glimpse into the world beyond it. The world where we have the courage to live to our full potential. But the question is a little saccharine. It skates over the surface of the underlying issue - how to navigate the fear of failure itself. Plus: unrealistic. Because we're all going to fail some of the time. Truthfully, failure gets a bad rap. We'd never evolve, learn, or hone our craft if it weren't for failure. Plus, the fear of failure is usually worse than the actual failure. So instead of using not failing as a framework for dreaming, we need to adjust our tolerance for failure and turn down the volume on our fear of it. What does the fear of failure sound like? Self-doubt. It’s the voice that says we shouldn't or can't do the things that move us toward full potential. Self-doubt is the mouthpiece of the band of thugs that keep us stuck and quiet: the fears of failure, not being good enough, and not being likeable. Self-doubt saps your energy and drowns your dreams. Think about how much energy you waste in dialogue with self-doubt. Now imagine if you redirected that energy into dialoguing with your dreams...or Just Doing The Things. You already have the courage and conviction you need to expand to your full potential. It's there, within you all the time. It just gets drowned out by persistent negative selftalk, second-guessing + self-doubt. So dial that shit down and turn UP the volume on your power + positivity.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

THIS WEEK MARKS THE BEGINNING OF

Venus’ almost six weeks retrograde cycle through Scorpio and, during November, back into Libra. This month might be a testing time for relationships; it pushes feelings to the surface which have been relegated to the shadow, the unwanted and disowned parts of ourselves. We may have to deal with obsessive/compulsive tendencies, vindictive and destructive behaviour or with seduction and jealousy. Old flames might reappear and feel mysteriously attractive, even though there were plenty of reasons to disconnect in the first place. On the upside, Venus in Scorpio can be a recluse and happy in her own company. She may inspire us to creatively explore our own inner worlds in the privacy and safety of home. Valuable lessons of self-love and nurturing might be a result of this time. During the New Moon in Libra on Tuesday we might desire nothing more than peace and harmony, but it is not easy to attain! Venus and Mars are locked in a long-lasting square (exact on the 11th) from Scorpio to Aquarius; they don’t have much in common, other than a certain stubbornness and inflexibility. On Wednesday Mercury moves into Scorpio as well, where he resides until the end of this month. Here the planet for communication has an intense, but secretive edge. This is not a good week for negotiations or trying to arrange a fair deal! Daylight saving starts on Sunday morning; put your clock an hour forward, unless you reside in QLD or NT. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

Astrology and Tarot Forecast consultations by Gisela FOR AN APPOINTMENT: giselasunshine@gmail.com.au or text 0431 894 408

g ARIES

The 7 of Wands represents the need to honour your values and vision. Not an easy task in the current astro climate! Even though you don’t shy away from confrontations, consistently holding out against pressure may just wear you out a bit. Be very selective about picking a fight!

h TAURUS

The 3 of Cups indicates that, in a world of tension and strife, you concentrate on loving communication and a generous, benevolent spirit. You may be a beacon of light this week that illuminates and soothes the souls of your nearest and dearest.

i GEMINI

The Hierophant symbolises the archetype of a spiritual teacher. He does not lecture but teaches by example. His mission is to walk the mystical path with practical feet. This week your role is to inspire and motivate others to choose the high road rather than reacting from a place of hurt feelings.

j CANCER

The Magician, in combination with this week’s astro flavour, points to realising, consolidating and utilising your tools and resources in the most miraculous ways. Your communication skills, focus and determination combine in a powerful way and you may accomplish deeds that were inconceivable before.

THE IRONING LADY

Ironing shirts, sheets and everything in between. 5 men's shirts $15 / 11 men's shirts $30 www.TheIroningLadyByronBay.com.au Suffolk Park. $30/hr. Angela 0414 719 680

d CAPRICORN

With the 10 of Cups drawn you might not be affected by the heavy astro flavour of this week. You may be blissfully unaware of any negative undercurrents that come your way and rather choose to concentrate on counting your blessings. Your inner peace and serenity have a soothing influence on your family life.

The Knight of Swords indicates eagerness for change. You might want to fast-forward your experience, landing where you want to be, without going through the whole process. Your courage is great but with Mercury, your planet, in Scorpio you have to deal with every step and the complete depth of any venture.

a LIBRA

When the Moon Tarot card appears it is difficult to discern the truth. Light and shadow are elusive and deceptive; it is too easy to miss some information or details. Unrealistic ideas, confusion and illusion prevail; therefore this is not the week to attempt making far-reaching decisions! If possible immerse yourself in a creative project instead.

b SCORPIO

The Empress represents the archetype of feminine leadership. She is in harmony with herself and with nature’s rhythms, ebb and flow. What a great week to reflect on all the different expressions of love and beauty, within you and around you. Embrace your tenderness and inner wisdom and share them when they fall on fertile ground.

THE BAY SITTERS

The 10 of Disks describes affluence as a natural consequence of selfappreciation and self-care. You might be in the process of creating long-lasting solutions for increasing inner and outer wealth. The foundation for this is an alignment with the principles of abundance and prosperity.

The Queen of Disks symbolises a wise and mature, feminine spirit who expresses her love and care in a very hands-on and downto-earth way. You know how to create financial security and emotional stability, and others may call upon your expertise when dealing with everyday situations that ask for practical, no-fuss solutions.

e AQUARIUS

The 5 of Cups indicates emotional upheaval and a lack of vision and fulfilment. Where once was wholeness, there now is just a hole. It is important to feel the depth of your sadness or sorrow and acknowledge mistakes or regrets. And it is equally important to find a way to move on, applying self-love and forgiveness.

f PISCES

With the Queen of Cups drawn and in combination with the astro flavour of this week you might feel rather reclusive. Immersing yourself into nature and/or meditation may be much more inspiring and soothing for your soul than socialising. Make sure you have enough time to establish peace within.

The Bay Sitters are a team of Byron Bay’s best babysitters! Reliable, affordable, fully certified and experienced. Call or text Ally on 0434 613 174 www.thebaysitters.com

BOOKS FOR Y

This week's review

TITLE: An American Marriage AUTHOR: Tayari Jones NUMBER OF PAGES: 320 EST. READ TIME: 5 hours and 12 minutes PRICE: $19.60 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Celestial and Roy are in the

happy beginnings of their relationship. Shacked up newlyweds and navigating their first year of marriage, Roy is charged with the rape of a woman. A crime in which the couple know for certain he couldn’t have committed. And yet, Roy is sentenced to fifteen years in prison. Leaving Celestial to continue on with her life, without her husband. As the years pass, each will discover how to live without the other and fight for one another in unthinkable ways.

WHO IT'S FOR: Lovers of a good relationship drama. WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: An American Marriage is the

heartwarming tale of two lovers who physically cannot be together. A Romeo & Juliet tale of sorts. Wrongful conviction is a sad reality for many people, in the United States and the rest of the world. This book feels like the diary of an incarcerated innocent. It is painful to read but also true to life and it’s many ups and downs, especially when it comes to romantic relationships. Happy, sad and honest.

NOTABLE QUOTE: “But home isn't where you land;

home is where you launch. You can't pick your home any more than you can choose your family. In poker, you get five cards. Three of them you can swap out, but two are yours to keep: family and native land.”

This week's review written by Jessie Hilton @jessieahilton

Max Tarrant

A T W IT H .. .

@MAXTARRANT @E.H.S.T.O

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT CREATIVE PURSUIT? I've

got heaps, but atm, restoring an old home in the hinterlands with many great friends.

IF YOU WERE TO STUDY SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I would read every book on every thing I wished to learn i.e. both sides of human nature or the under belly of the dragon, and self discipline myself to an immersed self experience in arts and facts and building and music and writing, just to name a few.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU REALLY WANT TO DO? Something

I really want to do? I’m scared of heights, but I like going high, so I guess I would really like to go to space and get a brand new angle on this from up above.

VOLUNTEER BEACH SURVEY OFFICERS

Positive Change for Marine Life are seeking volunteer Beach Survey Officers to help coordinate fortnightly beach cleans and data collation. Visit PCFML.ORG.AU and click “TAKE ACTION” for more information.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT WEST BYRON? I say no! The town

is growing fast enough and perhaps at a somewhat natural rate, so I think we don’t need a bombing of a small town on the WETLANDS on the only ROAD in.

KNOW ANY FUN FACTS ABOUT TWINS? Yeah, twins have the best life, ask my sister. She'll tell you and maybe make you your new favourite pair of earrings @mystickles

WHAT DOES E.H.S.T.O STAND FOR AND WHAT DOES IT REPRESENT? E.H.S.T.O Everybody Has Something

To Offer. A principle that everyone has a skill useful to someone else. It's a reiteration to everyone that, heading in the direction of producing your own creative expression of any sort, will ultimately lead you on a pleasant adventure called life in your hands.

IF YOU WERE A FICTIONAL CHARACTER, WHO WOULD YOU BE? Not sure, Donald Duck? WHY IS THE SKY BLUE? Reflection, refraction, photosynthesis, the sun earth and/ or water? I'm Not sure.

To hear more of Max’s wisdom through melodic sensations, check out The Dolla Llamas.
