KEEN TO CATCH A GOOD FILM?

This the week to do it, with the Byron Bay International Film Fest kicking off on Friday at venues across Byron Shire (and even beyond). If you missed the Oktoberfest bash at the Hotel Brunswick last week, Saturday brings another chance to pretend you’re at a Munich beer hall thanks to Byron Bay Brewery, which has brewed a special beer for its Oktoberfest party starting at 2pm. There’ll also be a German menu, with prizes for best dressed. Also on Saturday, ACON Here For Women will be hosting a mini-festival in Brunswick Heads in celebration of International Lesbian Day, with free breast screenings at the Community Centre from 10am to 6pm along with free food, workshops and live tunes. On Wednesday, join renowned indigenous artist Michael Cook for dinner and conversation at Barrio restaurant at Habitat, where 15 of his poignant photographic works, which often restage colonial-focused histories, will be on display. The delicious shared table menu and matching wines (as well as a Brookie’s Gin on arrival) will set you back $140; book via Eventbrite.

WHO IT'S FOR: Mothers, fathers, sons and daughters. WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: My Dead Parents is a stark

reminder that our parents are more than just our parents and sometimes in order to better understand ourselves we must look past our own lifetime. This memoir is a beautiful collection of stories that illustrate a woman’s longing to know more about those who raised her when it is all too late. You’ll want to ask your parents more questions after reading this book.

NOTABLE QUOTE: “What I was reading contradicted

what I'd long ago decided: that my parents had never been happy with each other, never had hope. I couldn't believe that my father could have been so articulate and vulnerable, or that my mother had ever adored him so intensely. My brain was in revolt. What I was reading seemed to have been written by stranger, not the people I'd known. I read their letters again and again, arguing with what I found. But as I continued to find proof of their love, I realized that I was defending the story I'd arrived with against mounting counter-evidence, and losing.”

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

ON THURSDAY THE SQUARE FROM VENUS

in Scorpio to Mars in Aquarius culminates; it indicates trouble for any relationship that is on rocky ground. Scorpio and Aquarius are known for their quite inflexible and at times stubborn attitude. Due to Mars’ very slow movement right now, this square drags on for another week! A Mercury/ Uranus opposition, also on Thursday, amplifies wilfulness and some folks might blow a fuse. With three planets in Scorpio (Moon, Mercury and Venus) a lot might be said by deep silent loathing and frowned eyes. And as if that is not enough a Sun/Pluto square (exact on Friday) exaggerates inner and outer tensions, maybe to a breaking point. A Mercury/Saturn sextile can be a positive influence that helps us to take responsibility for our actions and instils the motivation to apply problem-solving skills. During the weekend a little outing into nature might soothe your soul. Tuesday is the perfect day for a heartfelt, deep and meaningful conversation, thanks to a Mercury/Venus conjunction. This may breathe new life, regeneration and transformation into any strained relationship. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

When the Hermit appears it is time to retreat into your private world for a while. Since relationships can feel quite strained this week, time alone may become more attractive. As you give up social distractions and make space for introspection you may be able to shine some light into your own shadow or find some new values.

The diffuse light of the Moon Tarot card causes things to appear differently, which might make it difficult to come to a clear appraisal of a situation. Your confusion may not be able to be resolved by your logical mind but rather by introspection and soul-search. Don’t jump to conclusions and avoid any premature judgement.

d CAPRICORN

The 2 of Wands encourages you to grow beyond any doubts that have been holding you back for a while, even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone. Soon you’ll feel excited about leaving familiar territory and the risk you take is really quite calculated; plus you know that great rewards are waiting for you.

When the Hanged Man Tarot card appears there is no room to move! It is time to suspend action, surrender and pause to reflect. Consider how you can free yourself from ineffective personal patterns or limiting, out-dated beliefs. This allows you to see your world from a new perspective and gives you the inner freedom you need.

j CANCER

b SCORPIO

This week the Sun Tarot card shines her brilliant light onto you. It uplifts your spirit, invigorates your body and enhances the creative flow of whatever you work on. A natural generosity assists you in navigating any treacherous emotional situations and you display a great team-spirit.

The 3 of Cups promises an emotionally fulfilling time when giving and receiving come easily, naturally and effortlessly. If you share not only your goodwill but also your feelings, you’ll find the great gifts that vulnerability can bring – connection and validation.

BY GISELA

The Wheel of Fortune inspires you to expand your personal outlook and vision. It assists you to keep the bigger picture in mind while you break old, self-sabotaging patterns that used to create havoc in your relationships. You might feel positive and upbeat; a financial windfall is possible too…

With the Tower Tarot card drawn you may have to be prepared for your carefully laid plans to be disrupted. Most likely you won’t like the sudden changes but, since they are beyond your control anyway, you might as well take the opportunity to restructure certain parts of your life, project or business.

THE BAY SITTERS

The Prince of Swords is direct and sharp with his analysis of thought patterns and behaviours. With him by your side you may enquire what truly drives you to do the things you do, and you can cut through habitual thoughts or obsolete ideas that don’t serve you anymore.

The Temperance Tarot card asks you to keep moderation of all things in mind. For you as a hard-working achiever this may mean a little less time for business and a little more time for just being. Once you have re-established your equilibrium, things you been preoccupied with fall into place almost by themselves.

e AQUARIUS

The 4 of Cups invites you to re-evaluate a situation into which you poured much energy, but which now feels somewhat flat and stale. Wishful thinking and holding onto the past do not get you anywhere, and it is best to work on gaining a greater perspective before decide to make your next move.

f PISCES

The Prince of Disks suggests inviting clarity and stability into your everyday life by taking care of all the little things with great determination and dedication. With that commitment big things will naturally follow and fall into place because you laid secure foundations to build upon.

DEAR KEENWA, My children and I will be homeless in a few days, but we have found the most amazing real estate agent. He hasn't managed to secure us a single property that suits our budget, or is child-friendly; but his company donates any profits to affordable housing. I'd like to nominate him for some kind of local award. Know of any? - So Blessed

DEAR SO BLESSED, Here's what I do know of: Byron has the highest rate of homelessness outside of Sydney. It also houses the highest rate of love and light bullshit per capita, in the entire world. Your nominee has generously combined the two. You have ingeniously fallen for his antics. My suggestion is to camp outside his overpriced home, that he no doubt manifested with affirmations alone, until he finds a magical solution for your family.

DEAR KEENWA, My kid's school teacher is going out with my ex, and my boss is my new boyfriend's sister. Both of these peeps know way more about me than i'd be willing to normally disclose, and I know way too much about them, not by choice. Small towns, I'm not made for them. How can I enjoy the Shire without the Shire overly enjoying me? - Small Town Blues

DEAR SMALL TOWN BLUES, So, okay, there are very blurry lines here between business and pleasure. But the best thing about sitting next to your gynaecologist at your neighbour's dinner party, although awkward, is that you might walk away with a new job. And yes, we may travel for hours for decent healthcare, and speciality items like extra ribbed glow-in-the-dark condoms, but it's more chill. We're working to live, as opposed to living to work, and from little things, big things grow, right?

With Caitlin Cady

This week's mantra HIT MUTE ON SELF-DOUBT.

Last week we talked failure + self-doubt. But do we stop all the self-doubt so we can dialogue with our dreams? This week, I present a practical three-step approach to shutting that shit down: 1.

When self-doubt trash-talk pops up, X it out. Dial it down. Hit unsubscribe. Unfollow. Delete, delete, delete.

2.

Replace the thought with something useful and positive. If you're not sure what to replace it with, a reliable option is the opposite of whatever the self-doubt is saying.

3.

Take note of what happens. How you move through the world. What steps you take. What moves you make. What decisions you own. What direction you move in. How much more energy you have to devote to your dreams. How you feel. How you engage with others. What you require from them (hint: less. When you're not drowning in self-doubt you need less outside validation). Notice who you are sans the self-doubt.
