On Friday, the Byron Bay Film Festival will be hosting a free Music Video Party at the Brewery. Come along from 9pm to meet the musicians and producers behind 20 of the hottest music videos submitted to last year’s fest. Postponed last month due to crummy weather, Habitat’s Thrash ‘n’ Treasure Flea Market will now be held on Saturday from 9am-3pm, with $500 of proceeds going to the Disabled Surfers Association. If you’re keen to learn more about the political economy of what we eat, Eric Holt-Giménez, food systems expert and author A Foodie’s Guide to Capitalism, will be dropping by Brunswick Picture House at 6:30pm on Wednesday to discuss the opportunities and challenges in bringing together farmers, food workers, food citizens and activists to galvanise the global food movement. DEAR KEENWA, My girlfriend has a dog with her ex. They were all together for seven years, and it lives with him, but he still feels the need to call my woman regularly, as the dog has epilepsy, so they discuss medication and 'episodes.' Is this healthy? Or is the dog an excuse for them to stay in contact? When he posts Insta pics with his new girlfriend snuggly the dog, it drives my love crazy. Does she really want to be with me? - Who Let the Dog Out?

DEAR WHO LET THE DOG OUT?, Co-parenting with an ex is never easy, especially when high needs are involved. This situation calls for a private investigator, because how do we know that the epilepsy attacks are legit? And if they are, this is nothing a quiet call to PETA cannot fix. Next, ask to be taken on beach walks each morning and grow a beard man, that shit is cuddly AF.

DEAR KEENWA, I went into a Byron cafe the other day and had the hide to ask for a latte. I even requested local, handcrafted macadamia milk. The barista rolled her eyes, and continued her long-winded convo about the waves with the only other person in the place, then played with her dog for a bit before finally jumping behind the machine 20 minutes later. Wtf? Am I demanding too much? - When Ya Ready Love

DEAR WHEN YA READY LOVE, Haven't you heard of hipster protocol? First thing's first, the customer is never bloody right. I don't know how you're ever gunna live this one down, it's a small town, remember. Luckily for you, I've got you an out. Next time you need caffeine that you haven't colddripped and poured yourself, pull out the ugliest clothes in your mum's closet, buy a second-hand Mitsubishi Magna and start listening to nothing but trap, bring a keep cup and you'll get served faster than you can say squirrel.

HAVE A QUESTION FOR KEENWA?

A CREATIVE AND VISIONARY WATER

trine from Mercury to Neptune is building and exact on Friday. It lends inspiration and imagination to any artistic endeavour and opens the mind to intuitive subtleties. It may also fuel self-deception, and not everything you perceive may be anchored in reality, especially concerning romance and love! On Saturday a Mercury/Mars square might reinforce inner tension or confront you with some unpleasant but undeniable reality; arguments may follow… Soothe your soul on Sunday with time spent in nurturing nature or distract yourself with an epic movie. On Tuesday a Mercury/Pluto sextile opens up the mind to the naked and unrehearsed truth concerning power, money or sexual themes. The Sun is moving into Scorpio which brings a willingness to search and investigate beyond the obvious with x-ray-like precision. Almost simultaneously the Sun forms an opposition to Uranus, the archetypal revolutionary. Instant insights into the trappings of your own mind might lead to awkward revelations and conversations. Be prepared for mood changes and impulsive behaviour. A Venus/ Saturn sextile on Wednesday evening stabilises situations that were out of balance and evokes a readiness to solve problems. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

The 9 of Wands indicates that you are ready to deal with any ‘curved balls’ that come your way this week. Your inner strength provides you with the perseverance needed to keep up the pace and see things through, right to the end.

h TAURUS

With the 3 of Cups drawn you might be looking through rose-coloured glasses this week, and the goodwill that gets generated by your positive perspective inspires other people too. The heartfelt sharing and caring enhance the team-spirit at home and at work.

i GEMINI

The World Tarot card symbolises the completion of one phase of your life. Fulfilment and satisfaction with what has been achieved is yours. Nevertheless you thrive on the exhilaration and anticipation of exploring new universes; this pulls you forward and gives you wings to fly.

j CANCER

The Prince of Swords offers awareness and a willingness to analyse your innermost motivations. Consequently you may start to question your habitual drives, and maybe you realise that letting go of some of them, or modifying them, might actually liberate you in a way that feels really good.

The gift of the Ace of Swords is mental clarity and decisiveness. Equipped with these you can cut through any confusion or doubt that may temporarily cloud your picture. This is a great week to follow up on any creative project and to enhance it with a clearly outlined structure. Writing, editing and research also bring great results.

l VIRGO

The Temperance Tarot card suggests that the key for successfully navigating the confusing currents of this week lies in moderation and focusing on your equilibrium. Find ways to integrate seeming polarities and paradoxes, and you create a more whole and wholesome life.

a LIBRA

The 3 of Swords indicates a negative state of mind that is not easy to shake off. Suddenly your experience might seem tinted by dark and dull hues, especially if you get trapped in the past or relive old hurts. Stay in the here-and-now as much as possible and practice the attitude of gratitude for what is working in your life to uplift your spirit.

b SCORPIO

The 3 of Disks promotes stability, excellent timemanagement and teamwork. Your intention, priorities and loyalties are clear and whatever you aim for this week is bound to have a successful outcome. Trust yourself and also take others into consideration.

THE BAY SITTERS

c SAGITTARIUS

A dilemma might bug you this week. The Justice Tarot card demands that you take the high road, apply ethical principles and act responsibly in order to achieve your objectives. Short-cuts or a ‘close enough is good enough’ attitude won’t deliver you what you truly desire.

d CAPRICORN

The 9 of Cups is often called the ‘wish-card’ and it promises the fulfilment of some of your heart’s desires. You need to feel deserving and worthy though; otherwise you won’t be able to open up to the abundance of possibilities and opportunities that are all around you – ask and you will receive!

e AQUARIUS

The Princess of Swords reflects a need to act upon your ideas and convictions, rather than staying theoretical about them. You may ruffle a few feathers in the process and you might be labelled as rebellious by others, but you also make it very clear where you stand and what you stand for.

f PISCES

The Sun Tarot card promises a wonderfully uplifting time and joyful relationships with friends and family. The emphasis is on fun and play which makes creative endeavours and collaborations extremely rewarding and successful. Shine your light brightly, while being open and responsive to the ideas of others.

This week's mantra

PRODUCTIVITY IS OVERRATED. There are a million ways to measure a day. Productivity is only one of them. It's a valid one, but it's an overrated default. Why? Productivity is a handy metric - it makes our day feel quantifiable. Itemized lists that we slay with tick marks. A full inbox that we wipe clean. Boxticking and inbox-mastery make it easy to measure our efforts and make us feel like our day adds up to something. Here's the dark side of achievement: The truth is, for many of us, achievement is a self-soothing mechanism. Productivity and achievement are cheap and convenient fillers, ways to top up our cup of selfworth. Box-ticking temporarily pads out the hollows of our self-worth, laying a thin coat of worthiness on top of an abyss of emptiness (that vast, pervasive fear of I'm-not-enough.) While I'm all for being focused and making the most of our days, I think we could all use a reminder that productivity isn't the only way to measure a day - or, more to the heart of the matter, to measure our selfworth. What are some other ways you can measure your day? I’ll be back next week with a list of suggestions. ;)

JOB: The Bare Road – design / production

assistant / warehouse picker packer / baby entertainer. Hanging out at Sunshine Trader and odd fun things on the side for Atmosea

A BRI FUN FACT: I’ve had a mid-air collision with a dolphin.

(probably the best anecdotal thing that will ever happen to me)

LIFE MISSION: Nothing too serious, just generally have a

nice time. Learning, meeting nice people, surfing, seeing new places and appreciating where I already am. Sharing these things with friends, family, strangers.

dinner date with David DINNER DATE Dream FANTASY: Attenborough and Charlie (bless him) PODCAST The Hidden Brain episode on Nature was TIP OFF: a real nice one. Would recommend. LIFE + WORK Take the work when I can, enjoy the no BALANCE IN THE work, no money, no problem situation BAY:

COOLEST LIFE Being able to work for and alongside ASPECTS: super nice, supportive women and

BOOKS FOR Y

This week's review

TITLE: Goodbye Vitamin AUTHOR: Rachel Khong NUMBER OF PAGES: 208 EST. READ TIME: 2 hours and 52 minutes PRICE: $16.99 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Feeling down in the dumps after actually being dumped by her fiance, thirty year old Ruth moves back home to look after her father who is suffering from dementia. As she tries to come to terms with how and where her relationship went wrong she must also learnt that life is not only full of disappointments but great sacrifices. Confronted with the daily trials of being a carer for her sick dad Ruth will forge a new path for herself and hilarity ensues.

WHO IT'S FOR: This is a glass half full book as well

as being a glass half empty. Those who enjoy wit, sarcasm and dry humour will enjoy Rachel Khong’s writing and the emotional journey she takes you on. If your life feels like it's falling apart in a comical way this is the novel to make you feel better.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Goodbye Vitamin is

able to classify itself as a touching book about a woman evolving on her own terms in extenuating circumstances whilst also being really funny and lighthearted. Dementia is no joke, but Khong finds a way to make light of a challenging situation.

NOTABLE QUOTE: “When I brought it up, months later,

Joel said, "What are you talking about?" because he didn't remember it - he'd forgotten it completely - and it was at that point I realized that I could remember something and he could remember something different and if we built up a store of separate memories, how would that work, and would it be okay? The answer, of course, in the end, was no.” This week's review written by Jessie Hilton @jessieahilton

Sonny & The Sunsets

OCTOBER 25TH, 8-11PM / BYRON BAY BREWERY Now we’re spoilt for music choice when it comes to Byron, there’s something to suit everyone’s flavour, though these guys, all the way from San Francisco really know how to put poetry into song. Their unique and quirky sounds resonate with those who are familiar with surf culture, though not imperative for enjoyment. Birthed from the sand, the sun and twilight campfires, these guys put those moments into melodic spins, with a touch of humour and wit, you won’t go wrong by attending their gig. The best part? It’s free!! I know, hold the phone, grab your pals and let summer wash over you on what will be a groovy Thursday evening.

Madison Stewart @SHARKGIRLMADISON

GIVE US A SHORT SPIEL ABOUT ‘SHARKWATER EXTINCTION’ AT THIS YEAR’S BBFF? Many years ago, sharks were

not spoken about in any conservation group or movement. This all changed when Rob Stewart created his first film ‘Sharkwater’ which opened the worlds eyes through Rob’s story of fighting for the animal he loves against the shark fin trade.

HOW DID YOU START DOING WHAT YOU DO? I grew up on

the ocean with my father, swam with sharks at age 12, dropped out of school when I was 14 to be in the ocean more, and by that age I was already seeing a decline in shark populations. That’s where it all began!

Tricky Trivia Answers

1. B, 3D WALLPAPER. FINGERS IN EACHOTHERS 2. A, DONATING TO CHARITY. NOSES. 3. B, DO YOU THINK O.J. DID IT? 5. A, NOT SOMETHING WE THINK 4. FALSE, THEY STICK THEIR IS GOOD FOR THE WORLD

WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH SHARK NETS? Shark nets are

an archaic and ineffective political move that kill wildlife and enforce ignorance that runs through our society. It’s amazing how close Australians are to sharks and other dangerous wildlife, yet we insist on killing to maintain our comfort instead of taking our place in this ecosystem seriously.

HOW ARE WE TO LIVE HARMONIOUSLY WITH SHARKS?

Sharks are not a mystery, they are not an enigma, there are many things you can and should learn about the dangerous predator you enter the water with, just as a hiker does with a bear.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE BIGGEST THREATS TO OUR MARINE LIFE? There is no end to threats, though, the biggest threat is far simpler. It’s human perception. It’s the way we perceive an animal and how much that impacts us to fight for them. We love dolphins, but we don’t love sharks, there is hatred there, we need to change our perception. Download “the Australian surfing guide to sharks” from madistewart.com to educate yourself on how to share the waters with sharks.
