Around n w o T THIS Week
THERE’S NO BETTER TIME THAN
the first week of Schoolies to lock yourself indoors and find out why everyone’s been raving about Bodyguard on Netflix, but there are still plenty of good excuses to go out.
First up, funnyman Akmal Saleh will be delivering a stand-up show over dinner at Beef & Beach in Lennox on Friday night, with food and LOLs from 6pm ($95, tickets via Eventbrite). Brunswick Picture House’s Jazz Film Fest also gets underway on Friday, with jazz flicks screening through Sunday, and a performance by ARIA nominee Frank Bennett on Saturday at 8pm ($25; brunswickpicturehouse.com). Back in Byron, Gold Coast producer and musician Paces will be performing tracks from his new album ZAG at the Beach Hotel from 9pm (tickets via beachhotel.com.au).
This weekend also ushers in the first ever Fields of Healing festival out at North Byron Parklands. Think live tunes, recycled craft activities, chakra balancing, storytelling and more. One-day passes to the familyfriendly celebration of culture on Saturday and Sunday start at $95 (fieldsofhealing.com.au). Finally, the Deus store in Lawson St will be throwing a launch party for its Deus ex McNeill collection in collaboration with artist Paul McNeill on Wednesday, with everyone invited to swing by from 6pm for giveaways, talks, and a few bevvies. Yew!

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST
LEADING UP TO THE FULL MOON ON
Friday, the Sun moves into free-spirited Sagittarius, where retrograde Mercury and Jupiter, who is very close to the Sun, already reside. This formation may trigger verbal diarrhoea in some; others may experience a great ‘aha’ moment, or a glimpse into cosmic consciousness. The flavour is enthusiastic and ecstatic, but maybe not very grounded in reality. The truth is difficult to uncover, and too much talk may lead to more confusion and polarisation. During the weekend and beyond, the search for the ultimate truth continues. Things can get out of balance or perspective easily, and it might be very healing and soothing to spend some time in or near cool, flowing water. A square from Mercury retrograde to Mars is building (exact on Monday). We all might be a bit more reactive and compulsive than ‘normal’, especially when we defend our convictions. It all comes to a peak on Tuesday and Wednesday, when Mercury retrograde unites with the Sun and Jupiter. Remember that whatever is going on, whatever heated discussion you have… this is not the end of story. More will be revealed around Christmas time when Mercury joins Jupiter again, this time in forward motion. Be gentle with yourself and others. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES
The 5 of Wands indicates setbacks, strife and irritation; therefore proceed with caution and choose your battles or arguments carefully. Not everything is worth fighting for! It might be important to find a creative or physical outlet to move your frustrated energy. Don’t sit on it!
h TAURUS
The 6 of Wands points to success and recognition that is coming your way. You certainly deserve it; the dangers are to get caught up in ego-pride and over-zealous competition. Your victory feels best if you can share it with others through focusing on creating win-win situations.
i GEMINI
The 3 of Cups symbolises heartfelt communication, caring and sharing; what a wonderful time for a gettogether with family and friends. This is also a great week to network and support causes that are dear to your heart. Your exuberant energy is a great inspiration for others.
j CANCER
The Queen of Cups is in tune with nature and herself; her gift is intuition and unconditional compassion for all beings. With her on your side you find a way to express your deep feelings without blame and judgement, while at the same time you leave no doubt about how you feel and where you stand.
POSITIVE CHANGE FOR MARINE LIFE
Are looking for volunteers to fill a number of positions, such as Beach/River Survey Officers, Education Officers and Market Volunteers. If you are interested in ocean conservation, visit WWW.PCFML.ORG.AU or email S.MUSTON@PCFML.ORG.AU for more info!

The 5 of Disks symbolises the over-active mind that is trapped in a negative thinking cycle and conjuring up worstcase scenarios that never come to pass. Therefore if you find yourself burdened by difficult long-term choices, find a way to deal with practical, here and now stuff first. It will show you the way…
l VIRGO
With the World Tarot card drawn, the world is your oyster and you surely find a pearl in it. Maybe a dream comes true, a wish is fulfilled, or you are just using your gifts and talents in such a way that you are experiencing many little rewards and emotionally satisfying situations this week.
a LIBRA
The 3 of Wands indicates that you might have to step up and out of your comfortzone to assume leadership in a situation that requires it. Not only are you setting a great example, but you are also expanding your own horizons and capabilities. You might even enjoy uncovering a latent talent.
b SCORPIO
The Prince of Swords analyses his feelings accurately and he is willing to cut through outdated behaviour and habitual patterns. He can inspire you to use your sharp, rational mind to investigate your own motivations and drives, before you act or speak up. You might save yourself some trouble…
c SAGITTARIUS
With the Justice Tarot card drawn and Sun, retrograde Mercury plus Jupiter in your sign, it is extremely important to weigh all sides of an issue before you determine right action. Don’t jump to conclusions, especially during the Full Moon time. Your role this week is to restore balance, harmony and simplicity to the greater whole.
d CAPRICORN
The Princess of Wands is a youthful, freedom-loving spirit who throws all caution to the wind. Her desire is spontaneous expression and her goal is liberation of the self. This week your upbeat and optimistic energy might open doors, and relieve you from some burden that you have carried for too long.
e AQUARIUS
With the 10 of Swords drawn you might find yourself trapped in a cycle of negative thinking and, as a result, feel disheartened or selfdepreciative. Your over-active mind needs a rest! Breathe deeply and apply the attitude of gratitude to all those parts of your life that are working out for you right now, and watch yourself relax.
f PISCES
The Ace of Disks is the highest manifestation card in the deck! Opportunities are ample, but you have to recognise them and believe that you deserve them. It all starts with a positive mindset and a plan of action that is tangible, realistic and easy to commit to. This transforms your universe…

DEAR KEENWA, I feel like I have been studying and researching love since I was born. It is all my besties and I talk about, but I am still so lost when it comes to relationships, and even after many, many different partners, I am still single. After taking into account personal love languages, star signs, inner union of masculine and feminine, attachment styles, the stages of a relationship, planetary shifts in human consciousness, conscious relating, inner shadow work, mindfulness and compassion meditation, tantra, the erotic vs domestic tightrope, non-violent communication, new moon wishing, self-love affirmations, and inner child therapy; I am still left wondering... Is my partner supposed to meet my needs or else be booted out, or am I supposed to meet my own needs and expect nothing from anyone? Gemini Rising
DEAR GEMINI RISING, No idea. Lemme know when you figure it out.

This Saturday at Santos Organics, Bayshore Drive. 10am to 11am Learn all about buckets, sub-pods, garden ships and more.
I live in Myocum, which is local code for a living mozzie hell. Chemicals or citronella, these buggers are resistant to it all. My family got chased to the car this morning in what I can only describe as a bloody scene out of Jurassic Park. Don't even get me started on the night shift, like couldn't they at least be silent and deadly? Any tips? - Buzzing Out
DEAR BUZZING OUT, When I lived out bush in the Central Desert, flies were king. It wasn't until I surrendered to insects as a spiritual practice that I learnt the meaning of unconditional love. They deserve to be here too, man. I let the perfect creatures land on my face without resistance, choosing gratitude that they were giving me a free face clean, and glorious, consistent company. As a result, I lost my urge to kill. Tell me what these little guys at your place are bringing to your world?

With Caitlin Cady
This week's mantra
A LIST OF THINGS YOU DON’T NEED TO APOLOGISE FOR. Excessive apologising seems harmless enough. But it’s wasteful and destructive. Here’s why. We’re conditioned to feel guilt for acts of self-preservation. Our apologies perpetuate this culture of shame. By apologising for resting (a nap, a bath, a day off ), we’re contributing to a fear-based cultural obsession with productivity and perfectionism that looks impressive on the outside but leaves us exhausted and depleted. Plus, the apology diffuses the sustenance offered by rest. Surrender is the prerequisite for benefiting from rest but we can’t surrender if we feel bad doing it. Apologising for pleasure is also destructive. It tempers the joy available to us when we fully embrace our needs and desires. By apologising for our appetites and yearnings, we deny our desires which stamps out the passion and creative power within us. While you’re at it, stop apologising for your gifts. Shining is nothing to be ashamed of. If you believe your gifts are God-given or a download from the divine, then who are you to dim down your light? You’re a lamp, plugged into a higher power (TY Marianne Williamson), so... turn it all the way up. If you’re brave enough to speak your truth, say “you’re welcome” not “I’m sorry.” Because we need your truth. As Armistead Maupin put it, “the world changes in direct proportion to the number of people willing to be honest about their lives.” So, put a bow on your truth, not an apology. It’s a gift, not a burden. Lastly, NO needs no apology.. No is an instrument for creating boundaries that protect what is precious and defend against what isn’t. No is the weapon of a warrior who is discerning enough to recognise their self-worth, wise enough to respect it, and courageous enough to protect it. Notice how when you stop apologising you start owning and honouring your desires, gifts and resources.

BOOKS FOR Y
This week's review
TITLE: My Year of Rest and Relaxation AUTHOR: Ottessa Moshfegh NUMBER OF PAGES: 304 EST. READ TIME: 6 hours and 10 minutes PRICE: $18.99 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: My Year of Rest and Relaxation is the
story of a young woman’s experiment in hibernation, aided by some drugs and alcohol. What begins as an innocent way to sleep for a bit longer ends up in a full blown state of unconsciousness on and off for an entire year. Set in New York, this woman begins to marinate on her life so far and the life to come.
WHO IT'S FOR: Those who enjoy a bit of dark humour. Don’t read if you’re in a tough spot emotionally as some might find it too depressing!
WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: This book is raw and
sometimes really uncomfortable. I knew I had to get to the end for the payoff, and it was worth it just for the final paragraph (that doesn’t mean you should skip to the last page!)
NOTABLE QUOTE: “Sleep felt productive. Something
was getting sorted out. I knew in my heart—this was, perhaps, the only thing my heart knew back then—that when I'd slept enough, I'd be okay. I'd be renewed, reborn. I would be a whole new person, every one of my cells regenerated enough times that the old cells were just distant, foggy memories. My past life would be but a dream, and I could start over without regrets, bolstered by the bliss and serenity that I would have accumulated in my year of rest and relaxation.”

‘DO NOTHING’ – Tee shirt launch/Art Show by Atmosea NOVEMBER 29TH, 6PM / 7 GREVILLEA ST, BYRON BAY
We’re all guilty of using the old “oh I’ve been so busy” and yeah, it’s true, people are busy, and they just love to tell you about it, but why is it so glorified? Why is ‘doing nothing’ seemed as being lazy? We all deserve to do nothing every now and then. Atmosea is hosting a night where 9 local artists have been instructed to portray an illustration resembling the idea of to ‘do nothing!’ which will be printed on a selected range of tee’s so we can all wear reminders on our bodies that it is completely and utterly fantastic to honour doing nothing every once in a while, eh? Oh yeah, and there’s gin and beer. See you there!
A Night of Empowerment – That’s My Jam Dance Showcase DECEMBER 8TH, 7PM / MULLUM DRILL HALL THEATRE
Who loves a good hoedown? Me! With two years running of That’s My Jam dance nights, this night is dedicated to all the queens who have been dancing out their inhibitions since day dot. With a diverse range of styles being choreographed and performed, there will be a sight to see for everyone. That’s My Jam dance is run by dance gal Kyla Blacksmith who creates a space for women to connect with dance in a positive and feel-good kind of way. Get down to Mullum for a night of Beyonce rejoicing, not to mention drinks and snacks available at the venue bar. Tickets and info at: thatsmyjamdance.com.au

Tom Wolff @WOLFFONABICYCLE @ISURFBECAUSEPROJECT
MOST RECENT ENDEAVOUR? Well I just went camping
out west near Koreelah National Park for a few days with mates. It’s nice to move back to the area and realise that although you grew up here, the Northern Rivers is such a massive and diverse region and there’s always more to see and explore.
1. C, 97%. 2. B, 18. 3. A, 1.64 MTRS.
Tricky Trivia Answers
4. FALSE, IT IS A PUFFLING. 5. A, FLUFFLE.
WHAT IS ISURFBECAUSEPROJECT? I’d been talking to a lot
of surfers while on a bicycle trip through the Americas about why they surfed and I loved all the different responses to such a simple question. Eventually I decided I had to record these responses and found that Instagram was actually the perfect tool to record it in a way that people could engage with if they wanted to.
LONGEST DISTANCE YOU’VE RODE ON A PUSHBIKE? In a
day, it was around 160km. And I didn’t do it again. Over the course of the trip I just finished, I think it was somewhere around 9000km from Alaska to the south of Mexico.
PODCAST RECOMMENDATION? My all-time favourite is Conversations with Richard Fidler – because you just never know who he’s going to be talking to and the pearls of wisdom that strangers leave with you.
FAVOURITE THING TO WRITE ABOUT? Fellow human beings. WHAT DOES DEMOCRACY MEAN FOR YOU? Unfortunately,
my faith in government – particularly at state and federal levels – is fairly low at the moment. What gives me hope is looking at community based democracy and how it can be effective. To me that’s democracy – having the freedom and opportunity to unite in order to influence the future direction of our world. We’re always led to believe that we must think big, but it’s important to remember the small stuff too! To check out Tom’s passion project go to @isurfbecauseproject
