This week's review
TITLE: The Vegetarian AUTHOR: Han Kang NUMBER OF PAGES: 208 EST. READ TIME: 4 hours and 13 minutes PRICE: $12.99 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Yeong - Hye lives an ordinary
life with her husband. Their life of domesticity is suddenly disturbed by a series of nightmarish dreams Yeong - Hye has that turn her to a vegetarian diet almost immediately. It is a shocking revelation to the rest of her family, who refuse to believe her disobedience to her role as dutiful wife. Slowly, their marriage begins to fall apart as Yeong- Hye falls into a pattern of mania, making decisions that will affect the trajectory of their lives.
WHO IT'S FOR: This novel isn’t for the faint hearted. It has some dark themes that are hard to sit with.
WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Rarely does a book come
along that gives it’s readers such an unsettling yet enjoyable feeling. A feeling whilst reading that one is a fly on the wall in a room where horrific, unspeakable things are happening. And yet, you can’t look away. You have to read on! It’s disturbingly addictive. Layered in it’s storytelling and character journeys.
NOTABLE QUOTE: “Life is such a strange thing, she
thinks, once she has stopped laughing. Even after certain things have happened to them, no matter how awful the experience, people still go on eating and drinking, going to the toilet and washing themselves - living, in other words. And sometimes they even laugh out loud. And they probably have these same thoughts, too, and when they do it must make them cheerlessly recall all the sadness they'd briefly managed to forget.”
4. Name the number that is three more than onefifth of one-tenth of one-half of 5,000? A. 53 B. 103 C. 503 5. The “bald” part of the bird, bald eagle comes from an old English word meaning what? A. Swooping B. White C. Majestic 6. Physicist Albert Einstein was born in which country? A. Switzerland B. Sweden C. Germany 7. In hospitals, Nephrology departments generally treat medical issues related to which organs of the body? A. Ovaries B. Kidneys C. Liver 8. Triton is the largest of the satellites orbiting which of the traditional solar system planets? A. Mars B. Neptune C. Saturn 9. In architecture, postmodernism describes a popular 1930s design style featuring bold outlines and geometric shapes? True or False? 10. A word, phrase, or sequence that reads the same backwards as forwards is known as a what? A. Palindrome B. Acronym C. Synonym

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST
ON THURSDAY MERCURY MOVES INTO
eccentric, insightful and innovative Aquarius where he resides until midFebruary. Here is your chance to broaden your mind, think outside the box and find revolutionary solutions to any problems you encounter. A very favourable fire trine from Mars in Aries to Jupiter in Sagittarius is building (exact on Saturday), and since Venus is still very close to Jupiter, she is involved too. This is also perfect for a new approach to any lingering relationship trouble; it brings optimism and confidence in your ability to solve any issue. Sport and travel are favoured during this fired-up weekend and beyond, so get out, do something different and have some fun! Sun and Mercury dance in close union through the early degrees of Aquarius until next weekend. This is a marvellous time for brainstorming, coming up with unique ideas and for teamwork. The energy is upbeat and a sudden breakthrough is possible. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

This is your kind of week! With the Wheel of Fortune drawn and the current astro flavour, you are destined to have a great time. You are confident, full of burning enthusiasm and you are getting things done. Just watch out for your nearest and dearest; they might not be able to follow your drive or fulfil your expectations.
h TAURUS
With the Moon Tarot card drawn, home, security and stillness might be what you are seeking this week. You are more on an inward journey than others right now and appreciate time out, therefore it is important to honour that. Use your intuition and let the creative juices flow…
i GEMINI
The Priestess Tarot card invites you to contemplate new ways of being, releasing the mind from relentless activity and sensing the mystery that life on earth actually presents. This week it’s not about thinking, it’s about feeling and staying in the flow of what is unfolding.
j CANCER
The Knight of Wands represents the fiery enthusiasm of revolutionary change, and he won’t let you rest in your comfort zone! He activates you adventurous spirit and he is there to assist you when you need confidence in order to charge forward into the new. There may be a trip, or new perceptions and insights that lead to inner transformation.

The Chariot Tarot card heralds a new beginning; it symbolises an opportunity for creating new realities that expand, deepen and more accurately express your true nature. You may find yourself extremely motivated and ready for action, at the same time a new stillness and quiet determination are emerging.
l VIRGO
When the Devil Tarot card appears you may have to deal with some shadow parts of yourself that you’d normally rather deny than acknowledge. Now is a great opportunity to bring light into some of these areas. Deep soul-search gives you a chance to realise how you made yourself prisoner of your choices in the past, and helps you find ways to release yourself.
a LIBRA
The 9 of Cups is often called the wish card and it makes sure that your cup is full and overflowing this week. Whatever your heart-desire is, express it, go for it and ask for what you want. This is also a great time to get together with like-minded friends, family and especially children.
b SCORPIO
The 3 of Wands inspires you to take the high road and set an example of superb leadership. Your foresight and timing are excellent, and there is great integrity in your actions because your mind and heart are absolutely aligned with them. Therefore great things can happen…
OIL PAINTING TOORALOO FARMSTAY
c SAGITTARIUS
With Venus and Jupiter conjunct in your sign and the 9 of Wands drawn you feel strong and resilient. You are on the way to fulfilling your visions and you may be closer than you realise to seeing them manifest in front of your eyes. Don’t get sidetracked now and don’t give up.
d CAPRICORN
The Prince of Wands is often called Prince Charming. With him by your side you feel confident and optimistic; your charisma attracts open minds and doors. With your enthusiastic persuasiveness you are irresistible and you light up the world of others. This is also a highly creative time.
e AQUARIUS
The 10 of Disks symbolises inner and outer riches. The success that you may enjoy right now is not only the consequence of hard work but also the result of your alignment with the principles of worthiness, wholeness and wellness. The wealth created is as much emotional as it is physical.
f PISCES
The Justice Tarot card appears when you may need to make important long-term choices which weigh heavily on your consciousness because you know that there might be repercussions. Take your time to dive deeply into your innermost motivations, unearth and eradicate beliefs that might be counterproductive to what you envision.

DEAR KEENWA, Australia Day is fast approaching, but I'm not from around here. So far I have been immersing myself in your culture – I have Vegemite on my baguette each morning, and think koalas are the cutest thing I have ever seen! How can I celebrate the day, and honour all citizens of your incredibly beautiful country without offence? - Please Explain
DEAR PLEASE EXPLAIN, Let me introduce you to some of our incredible country men. A man known as Scott Morrison once said, “Indulgent self-loathing doesn’t make Australia stronger. Being honest about the past does. Our modern Aus. nation began on January 26, 1788. That’s the day to reflect on what we’ve accomplished, become, still to achieve. We can do this sensitively, respectfully, proudly, together.” #whilstbeingcompletelynothonestaboutthepast

When do I officially know if I am part of Byron Hills Tribe? I live on a property with rain water that I can't drink and no internet, and a waterfall. I make my own stovetop coffee, and I've stopped instagramming, so there's really no need to leave the house. Last month (the last time I went into town) I swear I could hear the marketer’s thoughts as he packed up my bananas (ours are no longer in season here). Or am I just being paranoid? - Feral Dreams
DEAR FERAL DREAMS, Hmm, you're close bro, but the official Feral Council want to confirm one more factor. Have you hosted any home births in the last week? You do need to have either used creek water off the property to fill the birthing pool, or let the little one swim straight into the creek. The placenta must be planted on the property, and at least one vegan smoothly made with the juice of the umbilical cord.

Instead... What if you made your decisions by how they feel, not by how they look on paper. What if you calculated what you can give, not what you can get. What if you gazed through the lens of love. What if you focused on following the joy. What if you listened to your gut. What if you picked up the choice that felt lightest. What if you let your heart lead the way? Try it. For a day or a week or a month or the rest of your life. Guaranteed: You will make different decisions. Likely: Integrity will be effortless, boundaries will be honoured, joy will be created. (AKA... less stress more happiness, more alignment.)

Caitlin Weatherstone @WILDSEARCH
JOB: Wildlife Ecologist and Environmental
Educator.
WHAT IS WILD What started as a place online to share SEARCH: my wild adventures, has now become a
hub for environmental education, hiking, nature connection and plastic free tips.
FAVOURITE I love a weekend away to Springbrook or LOCAL HIKE: Lamington National Parks. GOING PLASTIC Baby steps. One day it’s using a reusable FREE ADVICE: mug for your coffee and the next it’s
ditching a bin in your house (true story, I don’t have a bin). If you need a kick in the bum, join in on a beach clean-up.
WILDEST DIVING Julian Rocks is insane and right at our EXPERIENCE?: doorstep! One trip out there, I was gazing
into the big eyeballs of a loggerhead turtle when two dusky whaler sharks snuck up behind me, then one of my buddies yelled that there was a big bull shark in the Cod Hole underneath us.
CONSERVATION Be kind to the planet. Love the mother. And TIPS: yourself. Set aside time to be in nature daily
(without your phone). Give a shit about everything, but don’t take it personally.
QUICK AND EASY Equal parts powder (arrowroot, bicarb HOMEMADE soda, bentonite clay) to oil (coconut, shea DEODORANT RECIPE: butter) and a few drops essential oil. CAITLIN’S ‘Be the change you wish to see in the MOTTO: world.’

Andy Irons – Kissed by God Film FEBRUARY 6TH, 6PM / PIGHOUSE FLICKS
We’ll just keep the theme of surfing running for this week. Films for Change is hosting a night not to miss, with the exploration into three-time world champion Andy Irons and his constant battles with his mental health and opioid addiction. He was ‘the people’s champ’ in more ways than one, though was hiding behind a true mask to keep his smiles and fans a many! As the opioid crisis grows around the world, and the stigma of mental health issues is more frequently addressed, the untold story of Andy’s life serves to tear down the myths associated with these two ferocious diseases. There will be food, chocolate and music – so get your tickets early at: andy10.eventbrite.com.au

The Pinheads @THEPINHEADZ
WHAT’S IT LIKE TOURING WITH LOCAL PUNTERS, WASH?
Always very fun, we met them on a tour where it was us, them and skegss and bonded through an affinity of zussin’ it up. HOW DID THE SONG ‘I WANNA BE A GIRL’ GIVE BIRTH? I think Jez was in the supermarket and he heard the parents of a kid say something like ‘You can’t buy that toy because it’s for a girl, you don’t wanna be a girl do you?’ That and I’d just gotten a new fuzz-box.
TOUR DREAMS? We already have a pretty cool time
doing what we do now, we camp a lot on tour and cook things up on the stove when we can. If we could do that all over the world without being out of pocket that’d be nice, haha!
A FOND BUT TYPICAL BYRON BAY MEMORY COMPRISES OF? I woke up at the wash house (actually Bangalow)
sleeping in the back of my car with my feet out the boot and realised they’d gotten sunburnt all morning. Or once we tried to sneak into a shitty Byron bar via the roof (won’t name it) and our friend from the band Israeli Chicks jumped off and broke his ankle. Maybe not quite ‘fond’ but memorable for sure.
YOUTH CULTURE OF TODAY IS… Probably the same as
they’ve always been, the moment you comment on it you become the same as the generation before you. Although I do get a bit weirded out seeing babies holding iPads. I think the youth need more rock and roll and freedom in their lives, especially babies.
SOZ FOR THE CLICHÉ, BUT WHERE DO YA’LL DRAW INSPIRATION FROM? I suppose we dig people that stirred things up in a way and those that follow their vision without worrying about anything or anyone else. Catch these guys in Byron on Feb 2nd at The Northern.
