DEAR KEENWA, I'm a eco-pagan and want to celebrate Valentine's Day right, can you give me the low-down, a-la-ancients? I'm also polyamorous, so something that won't cost or damage the earth. - Love Rite
DEAR LOVE RITE, Some say that this day goes back to an ancient Roman fertility festival called Lupercalia, an event that involved wine, nudity and slapping women with strips of goat hide drenched in sacrificial blood. Yes, you read that right. Old folk do the darnedest things. Anyway, the women allegedly welcomed this because being marked in this way was thought to make them more fertile. I'm not sure if we have any fertility issues in Byron? The female festival goers would also put their names in an urn for the town's single men to choose from. The matches would then, um, "get to know" each other for the rest of the festival.
DEAR KEENWA, Toxic masculinity is such a buzz word. I have recently changed razor brands from Gillette to No Frills because of their absurd advertisement. I don't need to be misjudged, falsely accused, found guilty by association, and virtue-lectured by my razor company simply because I have a penis. - Man Up
DEAR MAN UP, Oh, you mean despite the fact that men have been commenting and categorising what is suitable female behaviour for centuries, your got your grundies in a knot? I'm pretty sure the ad was aimed towards toxic masculinity not all masculinity? I feel for you though so will include a bonus hot tip for you brother, no Byron woman is going to date a throwaway razor user unless its plastic-free. Just saying.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST
ON THURSDAY (VALENTINE’S DAY) YOU
might still experience the effects of a challenging Mars/Uranus conjunction (exact on the 13th) in the last degrees of Aries. It fires up passion and the need for independence; sparks could fly in a relationship where freedom or the absence of it is an issue. Mars moves into more steady and reliable Taurus on Thursday where he resides for the next six weeks; stubbornness might create recurring problems… During the weekend a Venus/Neptune sextile softens the mood, making room for romance and encouraging creative expression. On Monday Chiron, the asteroid representing old wounds, chronic pain and healing, moves into Aries, the hero’s section of the zodiac, where he resides until 2027. Here the emphasis lies in restoring a strong sense of self. Collectively people might stand up against oppression and too much control. Monday and Tuesday may be confusing days with many different aspects challenging different parts of any personality. A Sun/Uranus sextile from Aquarius to Aries craves freedom and excitement, whereas a Venus/Saturn conjunction in Capricorn supports shouldering responsibilities and working in a disciplined way. Mercury is in a dreamy headspace, conjunct Neptune in Pisces and the Sun also moves into Pisces on Tuesday. Don’t give yourself a hard time leading up to the Full Moon in Virgo on Wednesday. The Virgo/Pisces axis is perfect for meditating on how to encompass spirituality and practicality at the same time. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

With the Hanged Man drawn and the Mars/Uranus conjunction in your sign you might be experiencing challenging times. It is important to pause, reflect and investigate whether your own ego is your worst enemy right now. To become unstuck you may have to overcome fixed perspectives and unresolved hang-ups.

The Princess of Wands represents a truly free and liberated spirit. With her by your side you feel optimistic; you are ready to embark on a new, exciting project or find ways to overcome old restrictions that you used to label as shortcomings. With so much energy available you are unstoppable!
The World Tarot card indicates your readiness to explore exciting facets of your life. Possibilities may be realised as opportunities and you find ways to make them reality. New ideas, projects or talents might pop up, and with your creative output and innovative thinking you can build a new world to enjoy.
The Justice Tarot card paints the picture of total equilibrium and alignment of body, mind and heart. This is the time to restore balance and harmony in your day-to-day life and to simplify specifically these areas of your life that cause you internal stress. It all starts with kindness towards yourself…
i GEMINI
a LIBRA
The Hermit Tarot card implies that it is time to withdraw from social involvement and other distractions for a while and focus on introspection. This might be highly rewarding right now; it gives you the space to complete unfinished business and to restructure parts of your life that may have a tendency to get chaotic.
The 10 of Swords is often experienced as a time when you are unhappy with the results you are achieving and you give yourself a hard time for it. Being self-depreciating only increases the ‘wetblanket’ effect and the best antidote would be a big dose of daily gratitude for the things that are good in your life.

The Magician is highly skilled in communication and has achieved mastery in awareness and focus. Gifted with all his tools and resources you are in the process of producing magical results. Your creative inspiration and drive are at an all-time high and you may amaze yourself with the results you manifest.

With the 2 of Wands drawn an internal struggle might take a lot of your energy. The question is when and how to wield your influence, use your power and call the shots. You might see things a little differently than others, but your insight, pioneering spirit and timing are truly excellent, trust yourself!
The 9 of Swords symbolises the judgemental mind that is out of control and toxic. Even though there may be some truth in the self-criticism you apply, being hard on yourself only causes more pain. Allow yourself some respite; train your mind to drop negativity and replace it with inspiration and motivation.
The 3 of Wands heralds a week of foresight, insight and leadership. You demonstrate mature wisdom and your integrity is immaculate. You may be able to set an example for others and expand their horizons by taking the high road, acting ethically and providing much needed direction.
e AQUARIUS
The 7 of Swords may lead you astray this week. Be alert and recognise when your mind spends time going into various negative ‘what-if’ scenarios. Deep inside you know that this is a futile habit which only takes your energy away from efficiently dealing with the present moment.
f PISCES
The Queen of Wands is also called the queen of compassion. She learned how to tame the wild beast of judgement and obsession, replacing it with consideration and empathy. With her encouragement you may awaken to your deepest essence, health and vitality.

This week's mantra
DON’T SPEND IT ON GROCERIES. When my great-grandmother, Josephine would give her granddaughters money for their birthdays, she’d hand over the crisp bills with an appeal: “Don’t spend it on groceries.” I’ve always loved this. She not only gave the girls permission to spend it on something fun, something beautiful, something unnecessary, she actually required them to. She didn’t say, “save it for a rainy day.” Or “spend it wisely.” Instead, she said, don’t fritter away this gift on those boring day to day essentials like bread and toilet paper. Go on, treat yo’self. It struck me the other day that we can apply this same advice to the gift of time and how we spend it. When you find yourself with an hour of free time, in a quiet house without appointments, plans or urgent to-dos....how do you spend it? Doing something practical and necessary? Clearing your inbox? Folding laundry? Catching up on texts? Cleaning the fridge? Reorganising your kid’s sock drawer? If so, let me issue you with an invitation. Next time you find yourself with the gift of time to yourself, don’t spend it on groceries. Instead, treat yo’self. Do something indulgent. Something beautiful. Something that has nothing to do with practicality or necessity. Take a bath in the afternoon. Page through a book of poetry. Make a cup of tea and call your best friend. Get back in bed and eat a chocolate croissant. Watch reruns of Sex and The City in your undies. EnJOY your gift. When you give yourself permission to be free from practical concerns and responsibilities and instead, make pleasure the priority, it renews you. It liberates you from the grind of the mundane and gives you a lift. It’s an investment in joy. And that, my friend, pays dividends that a tidy sock drawer never will.

BOOKS FOR Y
This week's review
TITLE: Sisters First: Stories from Our Wild and
Wonderful Life AUTHOR: Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Pierce Bush NUMBER OF PAGES: 256 EST. READ TIME: 5 hours and 12 minutes PRICE: $32.99
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Jenna and Barbara Bush, twins
and daughters of George W Bush, have spent their life in the spotlight. First, their grandfather was the President of the United States and then their father. The majority of their childhood memories take place in The White House where they’d lose teddies as young girls and be watched over by the Secret Service well into their teens. This joint memoir is brimming with family memories, funny and enlightening, as the twins share the responsibility of ‘First Daughter’.
WHO IT'S FOR: Anyone who's ever wondered what goes on within the white house walls.
WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: However you feel about the
Bush family this book is a gentle reminder that families are made up of different characters, different opinions and points of view. The Bush sisters are honest, witty and extremely eloquent when it comes to discussing their life experience and how it has shaped them. It’s interesting to hear what political personalities have to say once they leave office, often they can seem more relatable and human than they did in power.
NOTABLE QUOTE: “The adage that warns, "Never drive
faster than your guardian angels can fly," took on profound meaning for my driver friends because they actually couldn't drive faster than my Secret Service angels could fly or drive.”
This week's review written by Jessie Hilton @jessieahilton

MCTAVISH IS HOSTING YOU ON FEB 20THTO SHARE SOME PRETTY PERSONAL IMAGES, WHAT DO THESE MEMORIES REPRESENT TO YOU? They seem to encourage emotional turning points
even if I am not aware prior to revisiting a photograph I’ve taken many years ago. Picking through the editing process was a very interesting time! The images represent my life travelling, and who and what I was interested in framing up. 1980-85 was a raw experience.
DO YOU EVER GET SCARED WHEN YOU’RE ABOUT TO CHARGE PIPE? Always! I have to feel the fear to engage clearly. Seems
to be two kinds of fear, one that is 100% life preservation back down, another fear promoting fully focused, engaged adrenaline based go for it. There appears to be those born with the later more pronounced.
CAN YOU EXPLAIN TO US YOUR MOST MEMORABLE WAVE? Taking
my first big set wave at Waimea Bay in 1985 on my brand new 9’0” Brewer gun. Dropping backside down the vertical face, torso and arms fully stretched out...being a little bloke I was barely able to keep my feet from leaving the board, but somehow managing to stay with the wild beast to the base of the wave only to be engulfed in the exploding whitewater. Unable to see a thing, surfing by brail I sensed my wax under my feet miraculously stayed upright to ride out into the clear. This is where the adrenaline had done its job.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE SURFING INDUSTRY TODAY? Appears to be a vibrant time in some areas especially hardware. There’s been a load of adjustments over the past decade with larger business/brands taking advantage of partnering privately to survive. What I love about the industry is its incredible diversity today, hitting corners of the globe we never knew had waves to surf with those fresh minds making it up for themselves.
WAS WRITING YOUR BOOK TC A THERAPEUTIC BUT CONFRONTING EXPERIENCE FOR YOU AT ALL? Can’t seem to have one without the other. Both therapeutic and confronting to put ourselves out in front of others in this way. I would not recommend this kind of action to anyone unless they felt fully supported and well on their path of recovery from addiction.
