THERE’S SO MUCH GOING ON

this week we don’t know where to start. But we’ll give it a crack. Tonight, the Seabin Foundation in association with Patagonia will present Summit to Sea at Byron Theatre. Kicking off at 5pm, the conservation conference will see 16 speakers – from surfer Dave Rastovitch to WildArk cofounder Sophie Hutchinson – present in a TEDxstyle format, with live music, food, coffee (the event runs until 11pm!) and some amazing raffle prizes, with all proceeds supporting the Seabin Foundation’s education, science and research programs. Tickets are $30 via byroncentre.com.au.

Tonight also marks the grand opening of Palace Cinemas (finally!) in Byron’s Mercato complex, with tickets to opening week films until next Tuesday 9 April discounted to a very manageable $12.50. For a limited time you can also become a movie club member for just $10, which comes with a stack of benefits. For more info, visit palacecinemas.com.au. Tomorrow, don’t miss Clare Press, sustainability expert and author of Rise & Resist: How To Change The World in conversation with Zoë Gameau at the Beach Hotel at 10am. Presented by Byron Writers Festival and Dumbo Feather, the convo will explore the formation of a new counterculture united by a grand purpose: to rethink how we live today to build a more sustainable tomorrow. While the event is free, registration is required via byronwritersfestival.com/whatson. See you there!

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

MERCURY THE PLANET THAT REPRESENTS the mind, communication and travel, is direct now, but very slow, and still conjunct Neptune in Pisces until the weekend. Imagination, inspiration and creativity are flowing abundantly. There is plenty of opportunity to finish and polish any relevant art, media or spiritual endeavours. It might be easier to express yourself that way rather than with words. On Thursday a Mars/Chiron sextile might bring some healing, revelations or insights into the workings of your mind. On Friday evening the New Moon in Aries may ignite your passion and decisiveness for starting off on a new adventure. This may work like an antidote to all the watery, flowing influences of Pisces. From Monday onwards Venus unites with Neptune (exact on Wednesday) and the Piscean emphasis takes over one more time. Venus loves to enhance the worldly experience with high ideals, art and romance. However a Sun/Saturn square is building simultaneously and might have a ‘wet-blanket’ effect on your love life. If you crave love and appreciation so much that you start to demand it, it will not be forthcoming! On Sunday daylight saving ends and it is time to turn the clock one hour back. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

The 2 of Disks indicates that it is time for a ‘gear-change’. Especially during the New Moon time you may feel inspired by fresh perspectives and emerging opportunities. Excitement and a new decisiveness blow away the cobwebs in your mind. A weekend trip would add even more stimulation.

h TAURUS

The Priestess Tarot card may enhance your longing for a spiritual experience and your quest for inner knowing. It is an excellent inspiration to take time out from being busy in the world and finding a quiet spot in nature for contemplation. The Venus/ Neptune union may have personal relevance for you.

i GEMINI

With Mars in your sign and the 7 of Wands drawn you may have to assert yourself and hold out against pressure. Don’t compromise your values or convictions; stand up for what you believe in or you might be taken advantage of.

j CANCER

The crab is generally more interested in maintaining the status quo rather than taking great risks and the 4 of Disks generally supports this notion all the way. This week however you might be in danger of being too controlling or attached to certain circumstances, and thereby miss an opportunity.

BY GISELA

k LEO

c SAGITTARIUS

l VIRGO

d CAPRICORN

With the Prince of Swords by your side, the power of the mind moves centre-stage. First priority is making your mind your best friend and adviser, rather than living under the tyranny of a repressive and judgemental inner critic or an inflated egotripper. Know what is driving you and relax…

The 7 of Cups describes the risk you take when you habitually turn to old, obsessive patterns in order to numb your inner emptiness, stress or exhaustion. This may involve over-eating, -worrying, -working, or anything else you overdo. It may have worked in the past, but now you may need to face the underlying issues…

a LIBRA

The Queen of Cups is extremely sensitive to the vibes in her environment; her conscious choice is to meditate in nature to find balance and clarity. With her by your side you may evolve your telepathic and psychic abilities to a point where you unwaveringly trust your inner voice.

The Ace of Wands describes the creative force in its raw, natural state. It can be constructive if you funnel it into the right direction, or it may be destructive if you are trying to control it or push it away. If you choose to use it as a fuel to fulfil your longing, you feel fired up and excited about new possibilities and you trust your capability to handle this power.

When the Death Tarot card appears, change and transformation are knocking at your door and can’t be ignored. The sooner you surrender to letting go and moving on, the easier your transition will be. Maybe you could use the New Moon time for a hero’s vision quest into future possibilities…

e AQUARIUS

b SCORPIO

f PISCES

The 8 of Disks paints a picture of order and structure that may be very helpful this week. Work methodically and attend to miniscule details to navigate the shifting and changing circumstances that appear out of the blue. You may have to find a way to be diligent and flexible at the same time.

The 6 of Swords represents a concentrated effort to overcome any difficulties by simply moving beyond your old definitions about yourself and turning towards who you really want to be. This eliminates selfsabotaging patterns, improves communication and opens you up to original, innovative ideas.

The 8 of Swords symbolises an innate problem with boundaries. Since you feel people’s wants, needs and also manipulations so acutely, you tend to get overly influenced by the messages you receive. This may cause confusion, doubt and inner turmoil about your own direction. Spending time alone helps you to sort things out.

DEAR KEENWA, My woman and I met a few years back and we have great bedroom dynamics but we argue a lot. We are always off again, then on again despite trying everything we can to be more stable; such as palo santo, ayahuasca, and polyamory. My question is, can you change the polarity of a relationship or is it more of a karmic, past life twin flame thang where your blueprint of relational dynamics is set in stone with certain peeps? - Tantra TravÂ

DEAR TANTRA TRAV, P AND T SEEVIEW WINDOW CLEANING

Want sparkling clean windows? Call Paul 0478 393 320. Paul has 30 years experience in the business, has insurance, is reliable and professional.

One school of thought is that relationship is THE container to heal the wounded child, unhealthy attachment patterns, wounded feminine and toxic masculine all in one hit. Which supports what a wise man once said, that relationships are not here to make you happy, they're here to make you conscious - or as I might also suggest, a matter of choosing your shit sandwich. They all kinda stink eventually, but we gots to eat.

DEAR KEENWA, I've been in a committed relationship for a few years, and am really happy. But Byron, man! I also fall in love daily. Are we really monogamous creatures? Bobby Bonalbo

DEAR BOBBY BONALBO, So I was single a few weeks back and went on dates with all the men I've fantasised about for like years. In reality, they ended up being some of the most boring nights of my life, so not how they had been built up in my mind. So this is how it goes down in our house now: after some flirty cash-out clerk fun I spill the beans to my boyfriend. We have a good 'ol laugh about it, and because I'm not keeping it secret, the attraction or charge I have with this stranger whom I've interacted less than a minute with (yet planned out my whole life with) is kept in check. What you resist, persists, remember?

With Caitlin Cady

This week's mantra WORD UP!

Ever listen to yourself talk? If so, you’ve probably noticed the negative bias in the language you choose. By using phrases like “I have to...” or “I need to...” we are adding a weight and heaviness to our lives without even realising we’re doing it. Not to mention the sneaky punk “I am...” which pigeonholes us into a particular (usually negative) emotional experience. The good news? It’s just a habit and it can be easily changed. I’ve put together a list of simple swaps you can make to instantly upgrade your experience of life. Give these a go for more gratitude, spaciousness and buoyancy: Have To —> Get To For example: You could say “I have to exercise this morning.” Or upgrade that to “I get to exercise this morning.” This tiny swap shifts us into gratitude and reorients us to the absolute privilege it is to even be able to move our body. It makes the whole idea inviting and light, rather than a heavy obligatory burden. What a gift, yo! Need To —> Want To For example: “I need to write this article today.” Or upgrade that to “I want to write this article today.” This swap shifts us into motivation and creates positive momentum by realigning us with the power of our desire. Letting our desires lead us is a lot easier than dragging an obligation along behind us like a dead body. I Am —> I Feel For example: “I am sad” gets an attitude adjustment just by swapping it up for “I feel sad.” This swap differentiates “me” from “the way I am feeling” which reminds us that we are not our feelings, we are that which experiences our feelings. And we are free to chose a different feeling anytime. So WORD UP! Upgrade your words and you instantly upgrade your vibe. It’s a small, but powerful tool to add to your kit. Experiment this week, I’d love to hear what happens - hit me up on caitlincady.com or @caitlincady and report your findings!

This week's review

TITLE: Motherhood and Creativity: The Divided Heart

AUTHOR: Rachel Power NUMBER OF PAGES: 181 EST. READ TIME: 2 hours and 20 minutes PRICE: $11.50 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Motherhood and Creativity: The

Divided Heart is a collection of interviews conducted by Rachel Power about the tug of war between women raising children whilst keeping creative passions alive. Rachel speaks with notable Australian women who are both mothers and creatives. The interviews beautifully illustrate the joy and pain of surrendering to the demands of motherhood whilst trying to fulfill a desire to create.

WHO IT'S FOR: Mothers with creative professions or those that dapple with the arts.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: This book is a few years old

but a friend recommended it to me after I complained about not having enough time for creative pursuits. In it I found wisdom from women who have managed, or are trying, to find space for doing what they love, what fills up their cup, whilst giving their children the love and attention they deserve. In a world where women are increasingly expected to accomplish more Motherhood and Creativity shines light on the beauty and madness of creativity in the midst of the chaos that is parenting.

NOTABLE QUOTE: “I think also that creativity and

creative careers are often viewed as frivolous or unimportant, so even forging on in that direction has seemed like a risk at times. It’s felt a bit indulgent, especially when there are people out there doing jobs they don’t like to make ends meet.” This week's review written by Jessie Hilton @jessieahilton

Jelle Wiersma

@JELLEBENJAMINWIERSMA

JOB: Manager at Bayleaf. NATURE OR I had to google this question first. So NURTURE: don’t laugh if I get it wrong. But there is

definitely something to say for the both of them yes there are things you inherit from your parents and childhood. But I firmly believe that you learn by life experiences. If I look back at my last 4 years living abroad and how much that has changed me I say nurture.

I DONT LIKE IT I know I’m missing out on perfect surf. WHEN: Dinging my board even before going

out…. And any other surf related bullshit.

MY PARENTS Marry a rich woman. Also, never take the TAUGHT ME: easy path. WHY I LIVE IN Not having my driving license didn’t BYRON BAY: leave me many options. Coolangatta has

too many big hills. Melbourne is cold and far from the surf especially on a push bike so Byron was the perfect place to ride my pushy to surf and work.

PERSONAL The biggest project is to open our own PROJECTS THIS business this year with my beautiful YEAR:

partner. The first seeds are planted, maybe ask me again at the end of the year.

I SURF BECAUSE: It’s absolutely the best thing. I can’t believe

I only found out about it a few years ago. When I moved to Bali and had the opportunity to surf on daily basis I knew I wouldn’t ever have it any other way.

@JANEBAKERDOESYOGA

WHAT IS YOUR MORNING ROUTINE LIKE? I love the mornings so I always wake up early 6-7am. I usually watch the sun rise over the hills and then practice some yoga. Then comes brekkie and if it's my day off I'll sit and read. TELL US ABOUT THE BOOK YOU’VE BEEN READING THAT HAS BEEN HELPING YOU WITH YOUR PRACTICE? Two books which have helped me most recently are the Bagavad Gita, a traditional yoga text, and The Body Keeps the Score, a book written by Bessel Van Der Kolk, about how the mind and body deal with trauma. It has been transformative for my life. WHAT DOES YOGA REALLY MEAN FOR YOU? It is a holistic practice. The physical asana practice is beautiful and is what originally drew me to the practice but it had become a sort of self-therapy. A way to declutter the mind, organise emotion and connect with a deeper sense of self. IS IT COMPETITIVE TO DO YOGA HERE IN BYRON BAY? I don't see it that way. Yoga is not about what it looks like and definitely not about anyone else. It is about working with the self. If I ever feel competitive I have to recognise it, and then I work to correct that thought pattern. WHAT MAKES YOU A HAPPY LITTLE HUMAN? Yoga! Reading, learning. Connecting with others. Friends and fam, there is so much joy to find in this world. YOU DID A PSYCH DEGREE AS WELL, DO YOU EVER HOPE TO COMBINE EVERYTHING? That's the plan, I would love to provide a sort of movement therapy. It's shown that meditation and mindful movement are helpful therapeutic practices. Yoga can help us break habits and create new neural connections. I believe in science as well as spirituality and believe they work best together.
