COME IN SPINNER! OF COURSE

there’s more to ANZAC Day than playing two-up, but it’s a great excuse to head over to the Byron Bay Services Club today at 1pm with a few crisp tenners in your pocket. Today also marks the grand opening of El Camino, Byron’s newest Mexican joint (yes, Byron now has SIX Mexican joints), with $2 tacos and free chips and salsa on offer through Sunday. The Mercato complex restaurant will also be handing out free sombreros. Arriba!

Embracing and Achieving Your Goals.

AUTHOR: Rachel Hollis NUMBER OF PAGES: 240 EST. READ TIME: 4 hours and 44 minutes PRICE: $26.00

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Rachel Hollis is a self-made

American entrepreneur. She runs a multi-million dollar business and is a motivational speaker for women. Girl, Stop Apologizing is a call to arms for women seeking permission to live a more fulfilling life - personally and professionally. In this book she carves out practical advice on changing mindset and finding the time to turn a dream into a reality.

WHO IT'S FOR: Women who are working on a side hustle and out there trying to kick some goals. WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Let’s be honest. There are

A LOT of self-help books out there. Most of them are pretty same same if you ask me. The only reason I read this was because it had been featured on the New York Times Bestseller list. I’d never heard of Rachel Hollis before but found some nuggets of wisdom in the pages of Girl, Stop Apologizing. The main takeaway was regarding the excuses we make on a daily basis that stop us from achieving our goals. I enjoyed her voice and her message, even if her ideas about faith were different to my own.

NOTABLE QUOTE: “You are allowed to want more for

yourself for no other reason than because it makes your heart happy. You don’t need anyone’s permission, and you certainly shouldn’t have to rely on anyone’s support as the catalyst to get you there.”

This week's mantra

GET THROUGH IT. GROW THROUGH IT.

Losses, tough breaks, failure, sorrow, grief and sadness are all part of this human experience. And though we may not be able to control what are often the hardest circumstances in our life, we can control how we relate to them. One option is to contract. To be brittle. To slump. Or to plod your way forward. To get through it. Or. You can grow through it. The truth is that every challenge in your life is an opportunity for growth. Every hardship. Every heartbreak. Every uphill battle. Every stressor. Every misfortune, every tragedy, every unhappiness… All are calls for expansion. Opportunities to expand your capacity. For grace. For resilience. For gratitude. For compassion. For understanding. For life. Yes, it can feel like a stretch. And that’s exactly what it is. A big stretch. As writer and spiritual teacher Alan Cohen puts it, “Challenge is the universe’s way of showing us that we are bigger than we thought we were.” Think about it. The greatest periods of growth in your life were probably garnered from challenging experiences. Challenge stretches you (if you’re flexible and willing) into the next version of yourself. Your higher self. Your bigger self. So rather than buckling under the weight of your hardships, how can you rise up and meet them? How can you show up for what life is asking of you? How can you spiral outward and explore the edges of your capacity? How can you remember just how big and capable you really are? How can you grow through challenge rather than just going through it? How can you ace this assignment in the curriculum of your life? And if you’re wondering… why bother? Your contraction serves no one. Your expansion serves the world. A more compassionate, more humble, more grateful, more resilient human is a gift to us all. So show up. Rise up. Shine. Don’t just get through life. Grow through it.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

MARS IN GEMINI IS EASILY DISTRACTED,

especially via social media or extensive socialising, and during the weekend he is at odds with Neptune in Pisces. This may lead to disappointment in friends or doubt about your spiritual aspirations and direction. Not everything that you may perceive at this time is grounded in facts and reality. Therefore be careful and conscious about how you express your feelings to others. Mercury, who represents communication, is in feisty Aries and is often overly impulsive or forthright in his articulation. The weekend would be great for a little trip into the unknown, whether you explore new places, find fresh inspiration, or open up to different ideas and philosophies. Wednesday could prove to be a very tricky day; proceed with caution! You may be bursting with energy, ready to charge forward and work hard, yet the results that you yield might not live up to your expectations. A Mercury/Saturn square breeds negative and obsessive thoughts about your perceived limitations. Try to be gentle with yourself and others. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

With Mercury, Venus and Chiron in your sign and the 5 of Disks drawn you may feel mentally and emotionally quite overwhelmed. You may worry about finances and/ or relationships and consequently feel insecure about your own intrinsic value as a person. Ask for feedback and support, even when it is difficult.

h TAURUS

The Hanged Man symbolises your tendency to hold on to out-dated habits or situations that once gave you great comfort. Now however times are changing; Uranus the planet for revolution is in your sign and it is necessary to be open to different perspectives and embrace new realities if you want to thrive.

i GEMINI

The Knight of Wands represents your eagerness to take a leap of faith. With Mars, the planet for decisive action, in your sign you feel confident and your can-do attitude works well for most of the week. Just watch out for Tuesday and Wednesday, when negativity might trip you over!

j CANCER

The Chariot Tarot card offers a new decisiveness and determination to achieve your goals. You may be more assertive than ever, and you are ready to implement changes in your life that promise growth, transformation and evolution. New circumstances suddenly look very appealing.

BY GISELA

k LEO

c SAGITTARIUS

l VIRGO

d CAPRICORN

The Knight of Swords is on a mission and nothing can distract him from pursuing his goal with a passionate heart. With him by your side you are highly motivated, determined and ambitious. You don’t take no for an answer and you remove obstacles swiftly. Therefore success is a given this week.

The Priestess Tarot card suggests withdrawing from too much involvement and socialising with others, and to take care of your supersensitive self instead. Take time out in nature to recharge your batteries and connect with your deepest feelings, letting your over-worked intellect rest for a while.

a LIBRA

The 10 of Swords indicates that your delicate balance and need for harmony and justice may be seriously disturbed during this week. Maybe you have over-compromised yourself lately and now you give yourself a hard time for it. Being self-depreciating does not help you. Be as kind and caring towards yourself as you would be with your best friend.

b SCORPIO

The 4 of Wands represents an exciting time for the completion of goals you set in motion a while ago, and a reorientation towards new adventures, projects and possibilities. Take a little time to celebrate and enjoy your achievements before you get on with the next big thing.

The Queen of Wands shows up to enhance your zest for life and compassion for all living beings. Her passion is red-hot; she assists you to let your flame burn brightly and make wholehearted connections. She uplifts your faith in your abilities to master any upheavals in a confident and optimistic way.

The Lovers Tarot card is drawn for the second week! What a great time to tap into your vast ability to give and receive love, and to let your heart’s warm energy flow freely. If you are lucky enough to have a beloved, make sure you have some extra time to enjoy each other’s company to the fullest.

e AQUARIUS

When the Tower Tarot card appears it is time to let go of old concepts, structures and security blankets. Your plans may be disrupted and chaos or crises are to be expected. If you meet all this with resistance the pain, loss or grief will be huge, but if you can simply let go and adjust to new circumstances, peace and grace come much sooner.

f PISCES

The Empress Tarot card represents quintessential feminine leadership. She is the Earth Mother and reigns over her kingdom with great benevolence. This week you may be touched by the beauty of this planet in more than one way, or maybe you feel moved to take care of some beings that need assistance.

DEAR KEENWA, School Holidays. Single. Working. Mother. Help! - SOS

DEAR SOS, Schooling hours and school weeks are predicated on the idea of Mum working at home, taking care of domestic responsibilities while Dad works for a company, earning the money. But this is Byron. What if, instead of asking working women single or otherwise to dance the logistical shuffle of work and home life, and nearly killing themselves in the process, society actually prioritised women’s needs and sought to wrap its structures and services around us? What if, instead of only really accommodating one kind of individual – the working man with a wife at home to take care of the entire rest of his life – society asked women what they need? Women sit in the heart of our societal infrastructure. We’re the glue that holds communities together. It’s imperative that society supports that role in a much bigger way than it’s doing right now so our children can thrive.

DEAR KEENWA, What is harmony day? Please explain. - Peace Love and Brown Rice

DEAR PEACE LOVE AND BROWN RICE,

HAVE A QUESTION FOR KEENWA?

12 BYRON BAZAAR

byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

Tricky Trivia Answers - Questions on page 2 1. A, DYNAMITE. 3. FALSE, IT WAS 4. B, GREEN. 2. C, JAMES COOK. JOHNNY CASH. 5. A, VODKA.

Harmony Day is the one day a year we pretend as a nation that we are not racist idiots and want to participate in the cultures that we perceive as threats to our false white history. (You know the one, where we forgot we all came here by boat.) Some would say this day is tokenistic. It coincides with the United Nations' International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Except in Byron we're doing it our way, a month late. Here's some scary stats on The Shire: We are 99.1 percent of European ancestry; the 0.99 percent is made up of Chinese, Indian, and Aboriginal. Maybe we could try being nice to all folk, all the time, not just the cultures who we think hold secrets that can help you find yourself.

Ash Keillah @THEFRIENDLYPIRATE HOW DO YOU TURN PASSION INTO PURPOSE? By appreciating what we have, always being positive about the future and helping out wherever we can. WHERE ARE YOU TRAVELLING TO NEXT? There’s a couple of trips in the works, either Fiji or to Desert Point in Indo but if they don’t happen it will be my honeymoon to the Maldives in September! TELL US ABOUT MY KITCHEN RULES? A crazy experience with even crazier people but had a blast learning so much about cooking and food in general. WHAT CUISINE IS THE HARDEST BUT MOST REWARDING TO COOK? Seafood because it’s so expensive if you stuff it up so the pressures on, but if you nail it it’s the best! HOW DID YOU BECOME A PIRATE? The classic wrong place wrong time thing, in between a couple of people fighting, someone threw a glass and the rest is pirate history. WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR YOU TO LIVE YOUR BEST POSSIBLE LIFE? I feel like I’m living my best life when I’m relaxed but with big goals, surfing all the time and getting lots of love from my fiancé Stacey. Throw some good food and good friends in there and I’m for sure a happy man.
