Week
Fancy catching a free gig? There are a few to choose from this week, including Brisbane’s Concrete Surfers (supported by Garage Sale and Demi Casha) at the Brewery from 4pm on Friday; The Badlands, Port Royal and Chilli Gomez also on Friday from 9pm at The Northern; and Hot Potato Band at the Hotel Brunswick from 7pm on Saturday. On Wednesday, don’t miss 2018 Pulizer Prize for fiction winner Andrew Sean Greer at Byron Theatre. The American novelist, who took the literary world by storm with his comic-novel Less, will be sharing the ups and downs of his life as a writer from 6pm ($30; byroncentre.com.au). Finally, as Byron Bazaar prepares to take a hiatus, I just wanted to thank you legends for following along. See you around town sometime!

WHEN WE STARTED BYRON BAZAAR, OUR VISION WAS TO CREATE SOMETHING FOR THE
community of Byron Bay. For readers, we wanted to make something that was both relevant and informative but also fun and uplifting, something that you could pick up and feel good about after reading it. For advertisers, we wanted to create a way to reach a market that we felt no one was speaking to. We feel like we did just that and the Bazaar has grown into a weekly mag that we are incredibly proud of, and we've been humbled by the incredible loyalty of our readers and advertisers. That said, the time has come for us to move on to new adventures, and after searching for the right buyer for this wonderful little business for the past few months, we've come up empty-handed. With that in mind, we are sad to say that this will be the final issue of Byron Bazaar. Before we ride off into the sunset, we want to take a moment to say thanks to all of the people in our community who have supported us. First, a heartfelt thank you to our beloved readers for giving us the privilege of becoming part of your weekly ritual over the past 4.5 years. We've loved walking past cafes and coffee shops and seeing you reading each week's issue. We've loved seeing your Tagged In Town adventures and getting to know some of you through Byron Vibes and Q&A. We loved making this for you every week and we are so grateful to have made something that mattered to so many of you. To the amazing advertisers who have supported us, we are so grateful for your business and your loyalty and your belief in our idea. The friendships that have blossomed through doing business with many of you has been an incredible bonus. Last but not least, to the awesome team of writers, editors, designers, contributors, photographers, illustrators, distribution legends, and printers who have made the Bazaar something worth reading every week, you ROCK. Thank you for the memories. Thank you for your support. Thank you for the good vibes. We love you, Byron Bay! Peace out, Dan, Carla, Loren, Caitlin, and Bjorn Byron Bazaar Founders

This week's mantra
THIS IS A THANK YOU NOTE, TO YOU, MY DEAR READERS. I cannot express to you what an honour and a privilege it has been to write for you these past years. This little printed column has proved itself to be a powerful way of creating a deeper connection to my local community. Getting hugged in grocery store aisles. Being given words of encouragement at school pickup. Seeing photos of my column pinned up on fridge doors and bathroom mirrors. Receiving virtual high-fives in the form of messages and emails. Oh the resonance! What a gift! In short, your eyes on these words has mattered to me. So thank you from my heart to yours. It is sad that these are the final words I’ll write to you in the Bazaar. That next week, I won’t walk past a cafe in town and see someone pouring over these black and white pages with a coffee in hand. But I’m excited for what comes next. Because in the creative cycle of life, an ending is an opening. Endings punctuate the phases and parts of our lives. They give us pause. They offer us the opportunity to reclaim space. To reflect. To be open to receive what comes next. To make room for something new. To start again. Endings are inevitable. But beginnings are always just around the corner. With Love, Caitlin P.S. If you’d like to stay in touch, I’m still writing like a madwoman over on caitlincady.com and on the ‘gram @caitlincady and I hope we can continue the conversation and keep building community there. And by all means, keep the grocery store hugs coming. xx

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST
ON FRIDAY MERCURY, THE PLANET THAT
represents communication and travel, squares Pluto and trines Jupiter. Mercury in Aries is hot-blooded and prone to rush into arguments or premature action. Therefore this is not a favourable day for negotiations or making big decisions, especially if you feel a bit obsessed and driven. Black Moon Lilith, a point in the chart that reveals hidden impulses and strange longings that are buried in the subconscious realms of our psyche, moves into deep, mysterious Pisces on Friday, for the first time in nine years. If you have planets on one or two degrees in Pisces, Virgo, Sagittarius or Gemini you might have to learn a lesson in how to own and integrate a shadow part of yourself. Great enthusiasm easily leads to over-confidence and browbeating during a Mars/Jupiter opposition which is exact on Monday. It definitely does not pay off to have a battle of wills about beliefs or convictions right now! Venus in Aries might feel limited and controlled during the square to Saturn in Capricorn (exact on Tuesday) and her feisty, adventurous spirit may be dampened for a little while. Also on Tuesday, Mercury moves into earthy Taurus and unites with Uranus (exact on the 9th). This transit may revolutionise any rigid or unyielding thought processes and radically change value systems or perceptions of reality, especially if you have planets in the very early degrees of the fixed signs Taurus, Scorpio, Leo or Aquarius. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES
With the Devil Tarot card drawn arguments, battles of will and powerful projections onto your nearest and dearest are almost unavoidable. The only antidote: constant awareness of your thoughts and judgements. Try to cool and temper your fire instead of fuelling it, and give your body a good workout.
h TAURUS
The 10 of Disks promises recognition and success in any business or creative venture. With Uranus, the mover and shaker, in your sign and the Sun uniting with it from Tuesday onwards, great and maybe surprising news that changes your life might come your way.
i GEMINI
The Star Tarot card holds wonderful inspiration to further your creative ambitions. With Mars in your sign you are ready to follow up on ideas and projects, and you have plenty of energy to expand your talents. As you recognise and value your gifts, others can see them too.
j CANCER
The 5 of Wands symbolises frustration or anxiety about how things are evolving. You might feel challenged to make decisions, but you don’t feel ready for it. Inner tension may lead to arguments that only drain your energy more. Find ways to release some of your pent-up energy without hurting yourself or others.
BY GISELA
k LEO
With the Knight of Disks drawn you may feel that you are not valued enough by the people who surround you. If you feel over-worked, under-paid or long for more recognition for your hard work, examine which part you play in keeping the same old conditions happening. This enquiry may give you clues for empowered change of your situation.
l VIRGO
The 7 of Cups indicates a feeling of emptiness or negative moods and a heaviness of the heart that is not easy to shake off. You might even judge yourself for indulging in them and that makes things worse... Exploring your self-sabotaging habits with compassion may lead to commitment to utilise your discontent to create real and long-lasting change.
a LIBRA
The Prince of Wands is often called Prince Charming. With him by your side your charisma and social skills are amplified. Your power lies in manifesting what you want, and your strong desire pulls exactly that towards you. What a great week to make good impressions and to form new connections!
b SCORPIO
With the 2 of Wands drawn you may be very aware of your power to influence people and situations, but you might not feel sufficiently aligned within yourself to be sure of what your desired outcomes are. If you feel torn in different directions, don’t push yourself to make decisions now, rather wait things out.
c SAGITTARIUS
The Knight of Swords indicates ambitious goals and fast movement towards them. You are pretty much unstoppable, on a mission, and off towards new horizons. With your upbeat energy, sharp mind and passionate action, success is a given.
d CAPRICORN
The 9 of Disks offers you a new way of living, enjoying a more comfortable and refined lifestyle, that you may have been longing for and working towards for a long time. Give yourself permission to reap the fruits of your labour and enjoy the finer things in life wholeheartedly and without guilt.
e AQUARIUS
With the Chariot Tarot card drawn you are confident in your abilities, and because you sustain your concentration, determination and effort, the positive changes you want to create in your life are coming faster than you may have anticipated. This can be quite a magical time…
f PISCES
The 8 of Wands indicates an action-filled week ahead. You might not have much time to mull things over in your mind and heart. It is advisable to strike while the iron is hot, and when you do, you get the best news you could ask for…

a w n e r e a e K D om AncienTHtE Wisd er Grain Moth FR OM
DEAR KEENWA, Four point five years. Two hundred and thirtyish columns. I have been following your wisdom each week as the gospel it is. Although I have only physically lived in The Shire for five minutes, I have to know who you really are, please can you reveal yourself? - Devoted Darren
DEAR DEVOTED DARREN, The creation story of mama quinoa to which I am so named (yet have absolutely no cultural identification with whatsoever but borrowed for personal profit) goes nothing like this: a young man fell in love with a star who inevitably had to leave him to return to the sky (duh). He caught a lift with a condor to visit with her one last time, and she sent him home with some quinoa to take back to his people. FFS, please don't follow me to the cosmos, and stop looking outside of yourself for yourself. For you are me, and I am you. I am every single person I have put shit on over the years. Yes, even the ones who shower themselves in patchouli and charge Hollywood rent prices.
DEAR KEENWA, I have heard you are retiring. Please tell me you're joking. How the heck will I survive this place without you? Do you have any parting wisdom for us? - Kid of Keenwa
DEAR KID OF KEENWA, If you find yourself bitching and moaning about how privileged you are to live in this paradise (you'll know, even the joy of hash-tagging secret waterfalls has gone), I invite you to get out of The Shire once in a while. Particularly if you're a parent who doesn't want to create another gen of Lords or Squirrels. If you are from Mullum, shorten your hugs every now and then to free up the limited parking spaces; if you're from Bangas (so, Sydney) think about building a house that isn't a Queenslander. For everybody else, Stop Adani. Take your overpriced vitamins to avoid Hippy Fatigue Syndrome, or at least join their Facebook support group and buy the T-shirt. It's been real.

BOOKS FOR Y
This week's review
TITLE: Dark Emu AUTHOR: Bruce Pascoe NUMBER OF PAGES: 288 EST. READ TIME: 3 hours and 15 minutes PRICE: $17.80 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Dark Emu seeks to challenge the
hunter gatherer label that has been placed on pre colonial Indigenous Australians throughout history. Supported by strong evidence Bruce Pascoe reveals that life in Australia before European colonisation was full of sophisticated systems in gardening and food production. This book is a fascinating insight into misleading history books and a shift in our knowledge of our continent.
WHO IT'S FOR: All Australians who have an interest in what life in Australia was like before colonisation.
WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Every Australian should
read this book. It is crucial to understanding the misrepresentation of our indigenous people and their culture in mainstream history. Bruce Pascoe has written this book in an accessible way to bring light to great historical inaccuracies and does so without alienating the reader. This book should be compulsory in all schools as it challenges the current discourse surrounding how Indigenous Australians survived before the introduction of colonisation. It was truly fascinating for me to learn about traditional methods of agriculture and had me reflecting on the ways in which Australian history had been taught to me as a child through the Australian schooling system.
NOTABLE QUOTE: “It seems improbable that a country
can continue to hide from the actuality of its history in order to validate the fact that having said sorry we refuse to say thanks. This week's review written by Jessie Hilton @jessieahilton

A T W IT H .. .
Kate Tarrant @KATETARRANT HOW DO YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE WORLD KT? One Delta Goodrem piano solo at a time. No that wouldn’t help. I would definitely start with the reversal of climate change followed by enhanced consciousness for all. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT LEADERSHIP RECENTLY? Listening is most important. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PSYCHOLOGY AND PSYCHOTHERAPY? Psychotherapy is a multi-faceted type of treatment under the umbrella of psychology. Psychology is scientific study of the mind. I think.
