On Saturday, Circus Arts Byron Bay will be celebrating its 20th anniversary with its first ever Night Market Under the Big Top. Kicking off at 4pm, the free community event will showcase the best local artisans, with plenty of live music, performances, yummy food and fun for kids. Finally, in foodie news, Three Blue Ducks at The Farm recently reintroduced its wintertime Sunday roasts. Drop in from 5pm for a cracking two-course feed and a Stone & Wood beer for $45. In town, O Sushi is now offering a ‘ramen Wednesday’ winter special, with three types of ramen on offer for $18 a bowl. Add a Sapporo beer for just a fiver.

AS I REFLECT UPON MY WORDS TO YOU, LET ME MAKE MY INTENTION TO YOU

the reader, clear - I don’t want you to be sad, may you feel positive from reading this. It has been quite an unforgettable fortnight. Just as I was working with the team to bring about the re-birth of the Bazaar, I was also witnessing my father go through the final stages of his long and happy life. Whilst last week’s edition was being put to bed, I was by Walter’s bedside with all the family. Holding his hand, stroking his head, watching the sheets gently rise and fall until he took his final breath. It was so sad – it was so surreal – but it was also his time. At 89, Dad was ready to go – as long as we could promise to keep our eye on his beloved Dorothy. And he knows we will. As this issue of the Bazaar is prepared for print, I will be down in Melbourne, this time to pay my respects at Dad’s funeral. Yes, hearts will be heavy - yes, tears will flow - but there will be smiles too, as we share the many stories of his wonderful life – the life of a truly English gentlemen. Dad would always say to me – to everyone - “don’t worry about today’s little challenges, the future is bright, and the best is yet to come”. In fact, he spent hours burning that motto into a block of wood that sat beside the loungeroom fireplace. Now it has pride of place on my desk. I have found it a most timely diversion to be working with the Byron Bazaar team over these last few weeks, and slowly introducing myself to the Byron community. With this week’s edition, may I leave you all with Dad’s favourite motto – “The Best Is Yet To Come”. Good-bye Dad – we will always love you. Tony, Byron Bazaar

With Caitlin Cady

This week's mantra

YOUR FUTURE AIN’T WHAT IT USED TO BE. Is your orientation toward your history or your destiny? Do you have a loyalty to your past or to your future? Are you reliving, retelling and reinforcing a wellworn, recycled story? Are you doing things in the same old way? Are you using the past as proof of what the future holds? Or are you daring to do it differently by dreaming up a new way forward? Because the choice is always yours: Keep recollecting and stay in the past. Or forecast a fresh future for yourself. Here’s the good news... You don’t owe your old ideas anything. Who you thought you loved. What you thought was right. Where you thought you’d be. So shed the old beliefs that no longer serve you. Drop the stories about why it didn’t work, or how you got it wrong. Say peace out the past. Put a fresh face forward. Dare to do it differently. Dance with your destiny. Because the truth is that destiny trumps history. And your future ain’t what it used to be.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

THE MOON’S NORTH NODE OPPOSES

Saturn, with Pluto nearby, for months to come. This aspect brings up issues around control, caring, attachment and letting go. When this aspect forms a t-square to any other celestial body, as it does with the Aries Moon on Thursday, these themes are highlighted. Also on Thursday, Mercury, the messenger and planet for communication, moves into fiery and slightly self-absorbed Leo. Creative expression, fun and play become more important, and if anyone wants to curb your freedom to do so, situations might get tense. On Friday the Sun forms an amicable sextile to Uranus, who aligns with the Moon at the same time. The need to be free and unencumbered might even arise in people who truly appreciate stability and who rarely connect with their innate rebellious spirit. Therefore inner tensions might rise, unless you are ready to go with the flow and adjust to new circumstances and situations easily. On Tuesday Mars, the archetype for outgoing, warrior-like energy, follows Mercury into Leo, the royal sign. Here he resides until mid-August. This can be an optimistic, self-expressive time, great for sports and competition. The ultimate goal is winning appreciation and being seen. We may all be a bit more extroverted and grandiose for a while. To keep the good vibes up, it is important to stay generous, rather than becoming stuck in an ego-game. In contrast and yet within all of that, the New Moon in Cancer on Wednesday is a very inward time. This is a total solar eclipse, but unfortunately not visible from here. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

The Ace of Disks appears when you are ready to embrace prosperity, safety and stability in a new way. Maybe your need for excitement and adventure is temporarily making space for your appreciation of the finer things in life, while keeping a practical and down to-toearth perspective.

The Queen of Wands is often called the ‘Queen of Compassion’; she never loses touch with how others around her are feeling. With her by your side you are confident, optimistic and cheerful. Your wholehearted expression encompasses benevolent leadership and intense passion, as well as deep empathy.

i GEMINI

Mental over-activity is often the default state of being for the Twins, but with the 4 of Swords drawn, it is time to relax. Finding peace of mind is your mission. Let go as much as possible of all the unsolvable issues you encounter, and step back from things that cause you stress, at least for now.

j CANCER

The Fool Tarot card heralds a new beginning and with the New Moon and solar eclipse in your sign, you better get ready for something new. This won’t feed the anxious and worried part of you if you just trust your heart and follow your own guidance.

When the Death Tarot card appears it is time to invite profound change and transformation into your life. Mercury and Mars have just moved into your sign and from Wednesday onwards we are between eclipses, which is always a time of letting go and moving on from painful or out-dated patterns.

c SAGITTARIUS

The 8 of Cups paints a picture of weariness, feeling drained or burnt out. Any emotional stagnation is in big contrast to your usual fiery expression, and it is important to not compound the problems you encounter with harsh selfjudgement. Start by sifting and sorting out what you don’t want, and what you do want will reveal itself…

The Knight of Wands symbolises the readiness for a leap of faith. If you have been pondering some changes but couldn’t come to a decision, the time is now ripe to jump into the new, regardless of whether or not you have analysed all consequences carefully and completely.

d CAPRICORN

a LIBRA

e AQUARIUS

The Moon Tarot card connects you with the depth of your soul, and invites you to a deep exploration of your innermost feelings, beliefs and conditionings. What you may find is not always pretty, but it can help you connect with your authentic self. Making decisions from that place is easy.

b SCORPIO

With the 10 of Wands drawn you might experience an uphill struggle this week. The more you resist and make other people responsible for it, the worse it gets. Take a little time out to consider how you can change your approach to your current circumstances and how you can move beyond limiting thought patterns.

With the Princess of Disks drawn you may be hatching some great plans. They need to be carefully nurtured until the time is ripe for their emergence. Resist the urge to push forward in an impatient manner; that would create more trouble than it is worth.

The Lovers Tarot card is the archetype for finely crafted relationships, which are for the benefit of everyone involved. It all starts with the relationship within. The more you can accept yourself and stay true to yourself, the easier it is to uphold these values with another.

f PISCES

The 9 of Wands fosters resilience and encourages you to tap into, so far hidden, reserves. You might feel amazed by how things that got you down in the past don’t hold that power over you anymore. Enjoy your physical and emotional strength.

I've been working full time on the dissolution of my ego since I moved to Byron, and keeping everyone I know up to date with the progress, multiple times a day. I don't subscribe to the idea of labels. But Cenno wants me to put something on all my forms. I'm thinking about changing my name. Again. Although i've been meditating on it for 40 straight days, my inner spirit guides are giving me nothing. If anyone has a clue, it's you Keenwa. What do you think about Jesus, Buddah, Rainbow or Dude? - Wtf Inna A Name

DEAR WTF INNA A NAME, How bout John, Dick or Harry? I dated a Don once. What I discovered was that name don't matter as much as quality. As a wise woman once said, “That which we call a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.” Thing is you could meditate all you want and nobody is going to want to call you, not even Centrelink. Instead of a name, perhaps you could get a job, and a stick of old spice (I'm sure they make it with less aluminium these days), and we'll call you even.

DEAR KEENWA, I attended the last event at Bili Hotel. Wow, they sure don't make shindigs like these anymore. I took the kids, grandkids, dog and pet guinea pig. We danced 'til all the glitter slid off our faces. I even had a pash and dash, whom i'd love you help me locate. They were wearing fluro colours, if it helps. - Hungry Eyes

DEAR HUNGRY EYES, Now, I believe in twin flames (not to be confused with soulmates). And if these guys were true fundraisers (wink, wink) they would run this event again so you can reunite with your love. But you will meet again, regardless of course. Have you tried clearing all your chakras? There could be some glitter clogging them up, blocking the flow of attraction.

HAVE A QUESTION FOR KEENWA?

TITLE: Inheritance AUTHOR: Dani Shapiro NUMBER OF PAGES: 272 EST. READ TIME: 3 hours and 54 minutes PRICE: $25.99 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Dani Shapiro's world is turned

upside down when her husband sends off their DNA to set up a gimmicky Ancestry.com profile. Upon the test's return it is revealed that Dani's father was not in fact her biological father. At fifty four years old, and with both her parents passed, Dani must grapple with this information and move forward in a world that no longer makes much sense. She has spent her whole adult life publishing memoirs and building a career on self evaluation and now, she must rethink it all.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: This book is beautifully

written and laced with references to Dani’s faith. Inheritance enters into the nature vs nurture debate and asks the question... what does it really mean to be related to someone by blood? I loved every page of Inheritance. It was a story so human, so relatable that I would read it again for it’s endless pockets of wisdom. This book was a reminder that as individuals we are constantly learning, evolving and questioning what it is that makes us uniquely us.

YOURS AND LEE RALPH’S ART IS CURRENTLY SHOWING AT THE LONE GOAT GALLERY. IT’S FRIDAY ARVO IN BYRON AS WE CHAT ON THE PHONE, WHAT BEER ARE YOU DRINKING AND WHEREABOUTS ARE YOU? At the Lennox Head Hotel, on my 2nd beer and that happens to be a Toohey’s New. YOUR INDIVIDUAL WORK IS ON DISPLAY BUT YOU COLLABORATED WITH LEE ON SOME OF THE PIECES. HOW WAS THAT PROCESS? Lee did the wood carvings in the Corramandel in NZ and I made and painted the ‘headstones. We sent images via Instagram of each other's works. Once we were in the same space we worked our pieces together as one collaborative piece, we did about 12 in total. FRANKIE MAGAZINE SAYS YOU ARE OFTEN DESCRIBED BY YOUR PEERS AS “THE ARTIST’S, ARTIST’. ANY THOUGHTS ON THAT? I don’t know, perhaps I am living the life of the artist and I connect with artists more than others, um I’m not sure.. perhaps I'm creating art for art's sake. It’s just someone's opinion. PEEPS CAN TAKE YOUR ART FROM THE GALLERY (IF THEY PAY FOR IT OF COURSE), WHAT ELSE DO YOU HOPE THEY TAKE AWAY FROM THE EXHIBITION? To see the dialogue between 2 artists from different coastlines, raised in the same culture and if not that at least get a buzz or feel inspired to do something themselves. I FOUND YOUR WORK ACCESSIBLE, IT COMMUNICATED WITH ME QUICKLY, I SAW A THEME DEPICTING THE STATE OF POLITICS, THE ENVIRONMENT, HUMANITY ON PLANET EARTH. AM I WAY OFF IN MY INTERPRETATION, WHAT ARE OTHERS FEEDBACK FROM THE EXHIBIT? The viewer decides what they interpret. BEING AN ARTIST IS IT ALL THE HOPES AND DREAMS A WOULD BE ARTIST MIGHT HOPE FOR? I guess so, it can be hard work. I’ve always felt that you don’t decide to be an artist, it’s something you're compelled to do. Inhabit - Marty Baptist & Lee Ralph, on exhibit to July 9th at The Lone Goat Gallery.
