Tonight, Thrills will be hosting its annual unofficial Splendour kick-off bash at the Island Quarry on Ewingsdale Rd from 4:30pm until late. Adelaide rockers Bad Dreems will be headlining the shindig (with free entry to everyone who RSVPs via Eventbrite) and just quietly, there’ll be free drinks! Back in town, the folks from Secret Garden have teamed with Childe, FallenBrokenStreet and Wrangler to throw a party of their own, with Tuppaware Party, The Butlers and Holiday Sidewinder supplying the tunes from 4pm-8pm. The event is also free, with reservation via Eventbrite essential. Not to be outdone, Byron Bay Brewery has lined up none other than LDRU aka DJ Drew Carmody for its own preSplendour party on Thursday from 5pm until late. It might not be free, but your $40 (tickets via Eventbrite) also includes sets by more than a dozen other DJs across two stages. See you on the dance floor!

THIS WEEKEND, 50 YEARS AGO, A MAN STEPPED FOOT ON THE MOON
for the very first time. Who could forget those patchy black and white TV images and crackly audio, as Neil Armstrong jumped from Apollo 11’s lunar module onto the surface of the moon. That was July 20th, 1969. As his feet landed in a cloud of dust, Neil spoke to the world -“That’s one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind”. Was the “a” part of his commentary or not? Years later not even Neil was sure! Neil wrote those now immortalised words during a six hour wait, as bureaucrats in Houston argued over whether the lunar walk should go ahead or not. Neil and his astronaut buddy, Buzz Aldrin sat patiently in their oversized spacesuits, wondering why on earth they had come all this way if they couldn’t strut their well-rehearsed moon walk. 200 cigarettes and 400 coffees later, Houston finally gave the thumbs up. Hollywood rejoiced – there’s a ton of movies that may never have been made if they had just said “time to pack up and come home.” Neil’s brilliant use of his downtime got me thinking. When we beat ourselves up about wasting time, or yell at someone else for not getting their A into G, we’re probably missing the point – free time can provide a chance to do awesome work. As Bill Watterson (the American cartoonist of comic strip "Calvin and Hobbes”) put it - “There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want.” As the world remembers Neil Armstrong and what he achieved in his six hours of nothingness, I wonder if “timeouts” might just be a chance for us to do our own best work. And for your time-ins, we hope you’re making your way down to Splendour this weekend. Music will be vibin’ all around the Shire from 19-21 July. Space out and stay chilled. Tony, Byron Bazaar

This week's mantra
CLARITY AND COURAGE ARE THE CIRCUITRY OF INNER TRUST.
The more you trust yourself, the better decisions you make. The better decisions you make, the more you trust yourself. This is the building, vital rhythm of an inner life built on clarity and courage. So how do you develop and deepen your trust in yourself? How do you calibrate yourself to clarity and uncage your courage? The same way you build trust in all of your relationships. By being in dialogue. By striking the balance of receptivity and responsiveness. First attuning to attentive listening. Then, honouring the information offered by taking conscious action. This process creates a cycle of intuition and action that builds the circuitry of inner trust. Having a hard time hearing yourself? Riddled with self-doubt? Try these three steps: MEDITATE ON THE REGULAR: Meditation dials down the outer noise, sweeps away the mental static, and makes it easier to perceive trustworthy inner messages with clarity. PAY EXQUISITE ATTENTION: Guidance comes in many forms. Pay attention to the ideas that spring forth suddenly and unexpectedly; the feelings that set your heart alight; the instinctual, animal impulses. These are all messengers. TAKE ALIGNED ACTION: When you are pinged with guidance, ACT! Do not ignore it. Take action aligned with the information you’ve received. Watch what happens. Acting on the wise counsel offered by your inner guidance creates positive outcomes in your life. So the more you do it, the more it builds confidence and courage, thereby stamping out self-doubt that clogs the circuitry of inner guidance and self-trust. Build trust with yourself and the whole world changes.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST
ON FRIDAY MERCURY RETROGRADE MOVES
back into sensitive and intuitive Cancer. Issues you were dealing with in late June might resurface and need to be revised. From Thursday to Sunday a lovely Venus/ Neptune water trine offers the opportunity to reconnect with your creativity, e.g. with a project that you thought was finished. This is also a great weekend for a spiritual retreat. What a watery, touchy-feely and potentially moody week! Until Tuesday we have Sun, Mercury, Venus and the North Node in Cancer. The nurturing, protective side of the mother archetype is very strong, as well as the natural impulse to defend the status quo. On Sunday Venus forms a challenging opposition to Pluto. Power and control issues may surface and obsessive behaviour might become obvious. If so, only a deep look at our own behaviour patterns, rather than others’, may instigate transformation. Mercury unites with the Sun on Sunday and hopefully promotes insight into the self. On Tuesday the Sun moves into magnanimous, fun-loving and a little bossy Leo; it highlights selfexpression and ego-preoccupations. Mars already resides there and furthers the danger of taking yourself far too seriously during the next few weeks. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES
The 9 of Swords indicates an inner struggle. You may be locked into negative thoughtpatterns, regret and worry. Being hard on yourself only compounds the issues you face, and your chance to turn things around starts with uplifting and soothing your spirit. If you can’t do it by yourself, ask for help.
h TAURUS
The Strength Tarot card symbolises renewed passion for all things in life. You feel upbeat, resourceful and courageous. Now is the time to take some risks, assert yourself and follow your own path. This is also a highly creative time; don’t waste it on ego banalities.
i GEMINI
With the 5 of Disks drawn you might feel left out in the cold, while everyone else seems to get more support and comfort. Whether or not that is true, hold onto yourself and find ways to relieve your burdens. Most importantly, don’t drain your energy further by getting lost in negative, ‘what-if’ scenarios.
j CANCER
The Emperor Tarot card assists you to be assertive and bring order into any (emotional) chaos that you experience in the current astro climate. If you step up, assume a benevolent leadership role and stick to a well thought-out plan, great things can happen…
BY GISELA
k LEO
The 3 of Disks indicates that it is time to roll up your sleeves and go for it. You just have to be sure about what the ‘it’ exactly is, which means to grow beyond your own doubts regarding feasibility. Only then mind, body and soul can move as one into a new direction.
l VIRGO
The 2 of Disks illustrates how ambivalent change might make you feel. On the one side it looks like a great opportunity but on the other side it always includes risktaking and letting go. This week you fare best if you remain extremely flexible when the winds of change hit you. Maybe you can even have some fun with it?
a LIBRA
With the Prince of Disks drawn it pays to persevere and be as patient as possible if results don’t show up instantly. You are in the process of carving out a new world for yourself, it just takes a bit longer than you anticipated. Use your time to take care of important details, rather than doubting your direction.
b SCORPIO
The 8 of Wands indicates that this week it is imperative to act and react quickly. You may not have enough time to thoroughly analyse and strategise every move you make. All you can do is to connect with your prevalent gut-feeling and strike while the iron is hot.
c SAGITTARIUS
With the 8 of Cups drawn you may have been overextending yourself for a while and now feel like you have nothing more to give. If you are emotionally exhausted your whole outlook into the world gets dark and dim. Take some time off to nurture yourself; after that it will be easier to think about your next move.
d CAPRICORN
The Sun Tarot card shines a bright and fortunate light on your path this week. Allow yourself some time for simple pleasures with family, friends and especially children, or your creative pet project. You might be amazed at how invigorating and motivating these times can be and how everything seems easier and more fun.
e AQUARIUS
The Empress Tarot card represents the archetype of feminine leadership straight from the heart. Its essence is deeply humanitarian and embraces life and all beings on the planet. Your love, insight and wisdom give you the capacity to heal and comfort others. One of your most potent skills is deep, attentive and empathic listening.
f PISCES
When the Justice Tarot card appears it is important to live up to your highest standards and ethical principles. If any part of your life is out of balance, this is the time to restore harmony. Try to find simple, practical solutions that you can commit to long-term.

This week's review
TITLE: No Friend But The Mountains AUTHOR: Behrouz Boochani WHAT IS THE PLOT IN A NUTSHELL? This deeply disturbing
highly awarded memoire charts the interminable incarceration of Australia’s most admired and erudite refugee. It exposes the institutionalised inhumanity, psychological torture and injustice integral to the current detention system. It also charts one man’s extraordinary fight for survival.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE STORY? The
book is deeply uncomfortable yet mesmerising. The use of interspersed free-form poetry provides both relief and rhythm to the relentless months and years of entrapment on this tropical island.
WHICH CHARACTER IN THE BOOK WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO MEET AND WHY? Behrouz is the core of this saga, its narrator and its hero. A man who has won countless literary awards for his work, whose direct and powerful gaze pierces your conscience.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN? That the human sprit can be
indomitable; that poetry can heal; that shady mango trees can provide solace.
WHAT OTHER BOOKS DOES THIS REMIND YOU OF? Kafka’s The Trial.
YOU GET TO ASK THE AUTHOR OF THIS BOOK ONE QUESTION, WHAT IS IT? Where would you like to live? And when you have your house warming, who would you invite to share the celebration of your freedom?
WHO SHOULD READ THIS STORY? Everyone – and definitely every politician.
Reviewed by Jane Adams from Byron Writers Festival. You can catch Behrouz Boochani and 140 other writers and thinkers this August 2-4. Details via byronwritersfestival.com/festival

DEAR KEENWA, I'm feeling a bit down. I keep making new buddies from outta town, but our friendship doesn't seem to be enough to keep them in The Shire permanently. I'm talking two-three months max. I love hearing about their adventures in the big smoke. Do I pounce too early perhaps? Do I keep opening my heart to blow-ins? I've lost five besties in the last year alone. Is it me, or are they just not lit enough to live here? Loco-motion With Me

Come and see us at the Arts & Industry Estate, Unit 12/4 Banksia Drive, Byron Bay
DEAR LOCO-MOTION WITH ME, Ah, it takes a special kinda human that can keep their chakras clean whilst keeping up with city rent prices on dat country wage. Some of us don't see the love and light in replacing their tyres weekly from all the pothole pashes, or dropping coins in a parking meter in Brunz, whilst we wait too long for hand-milled squirrel milk in a keep cup. I'm sure it's the 5G, not you Gee.

T: 02 6608 0522 W: www.cckitchens.com.au
DEAR KEENWA, I did a two hour reiki master training on the weekend, and put up a million flyers around town during the lunch break (which was hard work as there's really not that much free wall space, and Oh so much out of date advertising). So far, not one booking. Wtf? Am I missing something? I have made my new moon manifestations, my chakras are detoxed, and I'm officially open for business. What else is a guy to do? - Stagnant Soulpreneur
DEAR STAGNANT SOULPRENEUR, Here's the thing: grab yourself a handmade sign, and a bench outside of the health food store. Tie up a sarong around said bench to get the vibes right, maybe even a wind chime or two. Light some sage, and make the intention that donations are now to be accepted. No receipts, no privacy, and no boundaries. Just pure, organic, old school Mullum word of mouth. Gets 'em every time.

I BELIEVE YOUR PIANO SKILLS SAW YOU BECOME PART OF BYRON STEINWAY FOLKLORE? Yes. In 2002 I helped the Byron Community Theatre source and purchase their now world famous Model D Steinway. The inaugural concert was performed by none other than David Helfgott. Roger Woodward has tinkled it’s ivory’s and claimed it was one of the top three Steinways in Australia. Deborah Conway was cooing over it last month.

TELL US SOMETHING PEOPLE WOULD NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU. My tennis playing nickname is the “flying buddha”. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE MORE OR LESS OF IN BYRON? More haberdasheries (where can you buy a great pair of scissors these days?!) MUSIC IS YOUR LIFE - WHAT DO YOU LISTEN TO AND PLAY? I love classical music and jazz – Keith Jarrett, Edgar Meyer and Friedrich Gulda are some of my faves. For a bit of muso fun, Magenta and I like to jam on the ukuleles, and I am a fan of the melodica. Because you have to blow into it, that stops me from singing – which is a good thing! ON THE WALL BEHIND YOU IS A LOVELY PORTRAIT. IS THERE A STORY BEHIND THAT? Some years ago I was tuning a grand piano for a very distinguished lady. Her husband had been watching on for a while, and at some point said to me – “You have a very interesting face – I must paint you”. How could I say no. Turns out he was Robin Wiggins and he was looking to submit a portrait for the Archibald Prize. I don’t think I ever made it to the short list, but I kept the oil sketch!
