perfect for curling up in front of a film, so it’s handy that Films for Change Byron Bay and Pighouse Flicks will be hosting the Byron premiere of Defend Conserve Protect, a documentary that exposes the cruelty of Japan’s ‘scientific’ whaling operations, tonight from 6pm. Available via Eventbrite, the $23 ticket price includes chocolate tasting with Chow Cacao and live tunes by Luke Bennett, with a portion of proceeds going to the filmmaker.

On Sunday, the Gutsy Girls Adventure Film Tour returns to Byron Theatre at 6pm with three hours of inspirational films celebrating adventurous women around the globe (tickets $30; byroncentre.com.au) while over in Brunswick Heads, none other than Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson will be playing a free event at the Hotel Bruns from 7pm. Barrio’s Slinging Plates night rolls around again on Tuesday, with Palisa Anderson from Boon Luck Farm and Chat Thai fame set to join Head Chef Francisco Smoje in the kitchen. Expect Asian-inspired $10 and $20 dishes with quirky ingredients from Palisa’s Tyagrah farm. On the same night, local band Wharves will be throwing a party at Howl & Moon Records to celebrate the upcoming release of their new single ‘Blame’. They’ll be hitting the stage from 7pm alongside Visas, Garage Sale, and Sophie Ozard, with free entry.

LAST WEEK SAW A LOT OF CELEBRATING. 50 YEARS SINCE THE LUNAR DUST
was first disturbed. 3 days of Splendour in the Grass. A full week of sunny winter’s days. Who had time to sleep? The way we make daylight stretch to meet our every desire might have you believe we are gods and goddesses of light. I wonder, could there be a downside to 24 hour days? Some research over coffee and toast and the nasty truth was revealed. Whilst sleep deprivation from over exposure to light sources can cause a range of health issues for us, many other living things are severely impacted by disruptions in the natural day / night cycle. The very cute and clever clownfish (of Finding Nemo fame) is a frightening example. Artificial lighting from piers, harbours, cruise ships, resorts, or even cameras interrupts natural darkness. Too much unnatural illumination, and eggs laid by the clownfish will not hatch. Over exposure to light can be fatal. Maybe we humans are not quite the gods we believe? Maybe our manufactured sunlight and twinkling neon stars do more than just stop us from sleeping – they risk killing off a whole range of organisms we share this planet with. Nemo may be a film star, but too long in the spotlight and he will sooner or later be fried! Mmmm..... not quite the happy ending I was hoping for. Perhaps I will look to Nemo for his solutions to longterm survival. Clownfish are not only cute and colourful, they are renowned for being friendly, inquisitive and communicative. They make a lot of friends. And if you have seen any of the movies, you will know that those friends always find a way to protect Nemo from pending disaster. Movie sequels just keep on coming. Heading in to this weekend, whatever the weather, whatever light or vibes you absorb, make sure you spend some time with your friends. Clown around a little. Splash amongst the shallows. Ride a tube or two. Share some tunes. And above all else this wintery week...... keep warm and stay chilled. Tony, Byron Bazaar

This week's mantra
WHAT IF YOU BELIEVED YOU WERE ALREADY ENOUGH?
What if you believed you were already enough? How would that change the way you feel about your day? The things you need to do? The things you should or shouldn’t have said? What could you do with your time and your energy and your focus if you weren’t out there hustling up another hit of self-worth by endless people-pleasing and empty over-achieving?
LEARN KRIYA YOGA (MEDITATION)

If you believed you were already enough, what would you have the courage to do today? Who would you say no to? What would you say yes to? What would you ask for? What would you speak up about? How would you start your day? How would you end it? And with whom? Now... how does all that sound? Like a big F-ing relief? Like a dream day? I HAVE GREAT NEWS. You ARE already enough. Already. Now. Right now. You good. You great! You don’t need to go earn your worth today, boo. You just need to act like you’re already worth it. Because you are.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST
ON THURSDAY MERCURY RETROGRADE
unites with Venus again. Some issues which you thought had finalised in May might pop up for review and as Mercury, the trickster, moves even further backwards, he may trigger a re-think and re-orientation about topics that you dealt with in late April. Be patient with yourself and others because some things just need time to develop, and they will become more clear and definitive by mid-August, when Mercury finally moves into new territory. From Thursday to Saturday Mars forms a fiery, passionate and hopeful trine to Jupiter. This aspect suggests moving your body and uplifting your spirit in any way possible to counter-balance the recurring Mercury/Venus aspect. On Sunday the Sun moves out of the watery and at times moody realm of Cancer into the upbeat, self-assured and occasionally bossy Leo, where courageous Mars already resides. Straight away the Sun forms a fire trine to Chiron in Aries (exact on Monday). Here is a chance for healing some old wounds which affected the spontaneous expression of your true self. This may take place by rather unorthodox methods that you might have discredited until now. The Sun’s square to Uranus in Taurus (exact on Tuesday) makes room for such an approach and favours new ways, methods and perspectives, especially when encountering latent or chronic problems. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES
The Wheel of Fortune Tarot card comes as a gift of heaven, and represents an opportunity or even a breakthrough in the most positive way possible. The Chironic healing mentioned above, may be a strong, personal experience if you are born in late March. In any case it expands your outlook and alters your present course for the better.
h TAURUS
The Ace of Swords symbolises great mental clarity and it is the reward that comes after you have cut through confusion and doubt. Now you carve out a plan of action which you can commit to. This week you may remove some obvious hurdles in your path and your direction becomes clearer.
i GEMINI
The 7 of Disks comes in perfect synchronicity with the Mercury retrograde period. It is time to reassess and re-evaluate your long-term choices. If you are coming from a small and limited perspective, your outcomes can only be such. Playing it safe is often motivated by a fear of failure, and that is not necessarily your best option right now. Contemplate taking a calculated risk.
j CANCER
The Mercury retrograde/Venus conjunction happens in your sign and with the 3 of Swords drawn you might heavily resist what has been dished out to you right now. If you feel hurt, lost or let down focus on recovery and find ways to nourish your spirit. Some comfort-food might feel really good too!

The 6 of Cups is a happy card, it represents the little pleasures in life that often don’t get treasured enough. Take some time off from your business and enjoy warm-hearted connection to friends, family and especially children. Fun and play uplifts your whole day.
The 4 of Wands indicates times of change, endings and new beginnings. This is the week to recognise how far you have come, celebrate your success and be generous in any matter that did not work out perfectly. Your stocktaking may open you up for exciting, new possibilities…
a LIBRA
The Sun Tarot card promises an energising and creative week ahead. You may be able to advance a beautiful project or a social mission. Wherever you focus your energy you will be noticed as a shining bright light and things fall into place for you quite magically.
b SCORPIO
The 6 of Swords indicates that this week is mostly about the objective analysis of facts, which potentially is quite enjoyable for your inquisitive mind. Once you have sorted things a bit more, you are ready to move away from who you used to be, towards who you want to be in this world.
With the Fool Tarot card drawn you need to follow your heart’s desire. The risk-taking that is involved gets you rather excited and you might be ready to spontaneously embark on a new path. Some people might judge you, but who cares? Your freedom is your most valued treasure.
The Prince of Disks plods along slowly, surely and patiently. With him by your side you have the stamina and perseverance to take care of all the necessary details to piece together a new world around you, a new lifestyle or your next business venture, step by step…
e AQUARIUS
The Temperance Tarot card suggests avoiding all excess and instant reaction in favour of a measured response. Focus on the visionary and natural alchemist in you, and you figure out new ways to overcome obstacles, circumnavigate opposition or even overcome internal paradoxes.
f PISCES
The 10 of Disks works like a mirror in regards to selfworth and worthiness. The more you believe that you deserve success, the more it magically appears in front of your eyes. Count every little acknowledgment and every little achievement and they add up to great attainment.

This week's review
TITLE: The Arsonist AUTHOR: Chloe Hooper WHAT IS THE PLOT IN A NUTSHELL? In the aftermath
of Black Saturday, Chloe Hooper explores the conditions under which a man would deliberately set fire to the bush surrounding his home town and then watch it burn.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE STORY? Not
really my favourite, but the most poignant for me were the first person victim accounts of loss and escape in this story which are heartbreakingly tangible.
WHICH CHARACTER IN THE BOOK WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO MEET AND WHY? My first instinct was to say the
accused, Brendan Sokaluk as I would like to decipher the indecipherable.
WHAT
DID YOU LEARN? The socio-economic environment in which the Churchill bush fires took place may have played a significant role in creating the conditions ripe for fire bugs - “where the Eucalypts meet unemployment.” WHAT OTHER BOOKS DOES THIS REMIND YOU OF? This
House of Grief by Helen Garner. Like Garner, Hooper questions her own responses to the ambiguity of the case and her motivations for her interest. Similarly, as the contributing factors to the tragedy unfold, the reader oscillates from compassion to fury towards the accused.
IF YOU GOT THE CHANCE TO ASK THE AUTHOR OF THIS BOOK ONE QUESTION, WHAT WOULD IT BE? If you were to ask Brendan Sokaluk one question, what would it be?
Reviewed by Gabby Le Brun from Byron Writers Festival. You can catch Chloe Hooper and 140 other writers and thinkers this August 2-4. Details via byronwritersfestival. com/festival

DEAR KEENWA, Eclipse season. What? Didn't we just have a solstice? What's the diff, and I think I've actually run out of things to wish for. Any ideas? - Moon Matey
DEAR MOON MATEY, We have not one, but two eclipses in July. These can be events which throw our lives into complete and utter turmoil, like should I really give up coconut milk for macadamia? As the Dalai Lama once said, ‘Sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful piece of luck’. All around the world different traditions play out such as The Hindus who refrain from romping during both solar and lunar eclipses, despite the celestial reconciliation in the sky. Here in The Shire we will probs howl at the moon, possibly try out a bit of skinny dipping, have a vegan feast, commune with our higher guides, manifest more miracles, gather with community. In other words, just another night in The Bay.
DEAR KEENWA, I recently asked a first date how they dealt with their childhood trauma out of care, and got gaslit for highlighting uncomfortable emotions. Not in a woke lit way. But because they were spiritually bypassing the question. I have since typed up a spreadsheet on other helpful questions to ask a potential love to avoid this from occurring again and again, what questions do you think I should whack on there? Romeo Rulez
Byron Community College Brochure out now
Never Stop Learning
DEAR ROMEO RULEZ, There is nothing I love more than to throw in some smart casual questions on a first date, or text. They do not call me the bullet dodger for nothing. For example, when is the last time you said sorry? What was your part in your last relationship breakup (if they don't admit 50:50, gaslight them) What is your attachment style? What's your biggest trigger? What do you bring to relationships? How do you actively work with your shadow?

WHAT SPECIAL EVENTS ARE COMING UP? Because of the Byron Bypass, we are relocating the Community Market from the Butler Street Reserve to the beach foreshore, between the Surf Club and Clarkes Beach. Moving 290 market stalls has been a massive undertaking. We’re all excited for the first market on 4th August, as we have some awesome music along with all our regular stalls. I UNDERSTAND PILATES HAS MADE AN AMAZING DIFFERENCE TO YOUR LIFE - TELL US WHY. I lived in Canada for 3 years and spent a lot of time enjoying snowboarding. Unfortunately my adventures were cut short when I had an accident and compound fractured a vertebra. During my rehabilitation I found pilates and it was the only thing that gave me lasting relief from pain and made me strong again. I was so inspired that I decided I wanted to help others and share my passion. WHAT DO YOU THINK BYRON NEEDS MORE OF? I’d love to see more events and celebrations in the streets. I worked on Soul Street NYE last year and I’d love to do more free community festivities like that. COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE - "I LOVE …….. meeting new people, learning new skills, adrenaline sports and riding my motorbike. I also love the author Margaret Atwood and her Oryx and Crake trilogy, and the Tomorrow When the War Began series."
Look out for the Community Market in it's new home at Dening Park - from Sunday 4th August.
