We love a good fundraiser – especially when cocktails are involved – and tomorrow night Future Dreamers will be throwing a white party at Loft that combines both. From 6pm, there’ll be canapes, cocktails by Brookie’s Gin, tarot readings and live tunes, with $50 of the $150 ticket price (book via futuredreamers.com.au) going to the youth charity. Over at Sustainable Valley, Byron to Bundy will be hosting GoodGathering, a networking event for B Corpcurious folk keen to make new connections. Friday also rings in the Byron Writers Festival with a cracking three-day line-up of writer talks, panel discussions, workshops and more featuring everyone from local filmmaker Damon Gameau to former PM Kevin Rudd. YOU’VE GOT TO LOVE BYRON – WE’VE ONLY JUST SAID peace out to the tunes and threads of Splendour, when we turn it up again this weekend for the Byron Writers Festival. Hordes of literary revelers - sponsors, writers, publishers, publicists and their intellectual groupies - are setting up their tents for an orgy of fact, fiction and conversation. I’ve introduced you to my dad before. Wal was a big writer - the back of the envelope kind. He liked to scribble down inspirational words on any bit of paper that was handy – shopping dockets, napkins, envelopes, scrap paper, used toilet rolls (no, that’s a slight exaggeration!!). Those notes were then filed away for later reference. We found hundreds of them when we were cleaning up his study recently. I am sure there is a dummies guide to philosophy, or a self-help book in amongst all that inspiration! Just as Splendour goers were inspired to get out their festival gear, the Writers fest is likely to inspire a few of us to get literary and dust off a book or two. My job is to finish the Lonely Planet Guide to Ireland, before I head off to the other land of epic musicians and writers. The Guide describes Ireland as a small country with a big reputation for breathtaking landscapes, friendly people, and an “unvarnished informality.” Sounds perfect. I’m going to soak up all of that on a mission to find the best Irish pub in County Cork. After smashing dry July (must have been drunk when I agreed to that) I can’t wait to immerse myself in all of that Irish hospitality. So, I will be leaving, and reading, on a jet plane ... .... but I do know when I’ll be back again. Just in time for the Bazaar’s September issues. Enjoy what’s left of winter, read a good book or two and stay chilled. Tony, Byron Bazaar

HEAVILY Meditated

TM

With Caitlin Cady

This week's mantra VOTE WITH YOUR FOLLOW.

Instagram has, no doubt, become an algorythmic marketing machine, full of accounts that seem to be making people feel worse, not better. Consequently, there is backlash against Instagram as a platform, but more so, against Influencers who seem to be profiting from the platform, both in actual currency and the currency of social status. But we need to be accountable as users of the platform. The huge numbers of people following accounts that make them feel like sh*t are the ones perpetuating the success of those accounts. No one is forcing you to follow anyone! And it’s your follow that creates the access marketers are seeking through Influencers. It’s your follow that encourages the Influencers to keep posting beautiful, unrealistic, sunset-inspo, skirt- swishing, deeply-tanned, on-perpetual-holiday highlight reels. Your follow is feeding the machine. I am not suggesting that we all delete Instagram. Nor am I saying that we should do away with beautiful photography and curated feeds. And I’m definitely not dissing Influencers. The ‘gram is a powerful tool for connection and there are plenty of accounts out there who are being of service to others through education and inspiration. I’m just reminding you that this is a platform where your vote counts. And it is indulgent to complain about a dynamic that you are helping to create. By following people who make you feel less-than, you are giving your power away. So take it back. Take responsibility for your role in and your experience of social media. Be conscious of who and what you are worshiping at the altar of social media. Be discerning. CHOOSE who you really want to be influenced by. CHOOSE to support the people who are helping you feel better, not worse. Vote with your follow.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

THIS WEEK KICKS OFF WITH THE NEW Moon in Leo and Lady Venus very close by. The New Moon time is often inward, quiet and reflective but not this time! Leo is dramatic, self-expressive and out there. A little attention-seeking might also be going on, and with Mars in Leo as well, it is a great time to get out and about, socialise, entertain and have fun with creative projects. Some relationships might be challenged just because it comes naturally to focus on your own wants, needs and desires, rather than those of others. Mercury the messenger is finally changing mode and turning direct on Friday. He is extremely slow though, but from here on it gets easier to organise your schedule and get on top of communication problems. Also on Friday Venus makes a fiery trine to Chiron and a square to Uranus. Here is an opportunity or a challenge to take courage, open your heart, let love take over and find healing in the most unusual and never anticipated ways. Venus and Sun are engaging in a very slow dance, only a few degrees apart. Because they move at similar speeds it takes them until the 14th of August to come to a true conjunction. This may be a highly creative, optimistic and truly romantic time. Make the most of it while being aware enough to curb any bossiness or self-glorifying tendencies within yourself. The Sun also forms a very beneficial fire trine to Jupiter (exact on Wednesday); a truly inspiring and upbeat time! For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

The Knight of Disks symbolises a somewhat inflexible or overly cautious attitude, and might dampen your normally courageous spirit. Don’t concentrate and obsess about what is wrong, rather deliberately invite the attitude of gratitude for the things that work out, even when your progress is not grandiose.

d CAPRICORN

At this point in time you might expect a lot of yourself and others. The current astro flavour only heats up the desire to be powerful and adored, however the 5 of Wands keeps throwing you curved balls. You might have to deal with setbacks that cause great agitation. A little patience goes a long way…

The 2 of Wands describes an inner struggle about how to proceed. You might be pondering whether to assert yourself, take a risk and call the shots – or not. The most important thing right now is timing. The right action at the wrong time won’t bring you the desired results.

The 8 of Wands indicates an incredibly busy week. You might not have the time to analyse and plan your actions in the way that you are used to. An important message might pressure you into quick reaction, but things turn out well if you just follow your first impulse, also known as gut-feeling.

i GEMINI

a LIBRA

The Princess of Cups is very receptive and able to communicate her desires and concerns in a meaningful way. With her by your side you won’t have to over-think things. You find your way by dropping into your feelings and that’s how you find true and simple answers to your quest.

The Princess of Disks possesses a quiet, steady and creative power that helps you to grow and change in profound ways that might not be obvious to an observer. The plans and projects that you are hatching will manifest when the time is ripe. Try to be patient.

j CANCER

b SCORPIO

The Queen of Cup highlights your intuition and receptivity. You may want to shelter yourself a bit from rough or overly hectic situations. As much as you can, find quiet places and allow time for deep communication with nature which soothes your soul.

With the Ace of Swords drawn you know what you want and you are making sure you get it. All doubts and confusion are gone and now your path is obvious. Your mental clarity and objectivity are remarkable. You did well to hold your horses while you felt irritable and reactive.

The Sun Tarot card shines a brilliant light onto your path this week. The Sun/Jupiter trine may have a personal impact on you; it generates inspiration for growth and expansion in every area of your life. Your vitality and zest for life propel you forward into new experiences and creative ventures.

The Hierophant represents status as well as authority which have their foundations in tradition and a potent combination of knowledge and wisdom. Believe in yourself and in your valued contribution as a teacher, counsellor or mentor, just don’t give unsolicited advice.

e AQUARIUS

The Fool Tarot card heralds a new beginning. Decisions you make and risks you take are not a matter or reason but a matter of heart. The only thing you can commit to right now is follow your heart’s unique songline…

f PISCES

The Priestess Tarot card assists you to get in touch with your inner guidance and asks you to withdraw from emotional involvement temporarily. Meditation, contemplation and art may help you to transcend the mundane world and look beyond the obvious…

DEAR KEENWA, I desperately need a sitter so I can attend an Ayahuasca ceremony on the weekend. Baby dadda can't help me. Is it too much to ask for creche at this thing? - Aunty Aya

DEAR AUNTY AYA, Look, if the plant has been calling you, it must know you're a single mum with childcare issues, and it's been calling your child as well. My dad used to park me in his Holden Kingswood on a Saturday 'arvo with nothing but the breeze for company and a pack of non GF Twisties in front of the TAB, and I turned out fine. (No, that does not stand for turmeric activated 'bucha.) Although he couldn't hear me over the sound of the race caller, and could just see me through the cigarette smoke, I survived. But ffs don't you dare drop your parenting standards and flick your kid a screen. That would be low.

DEAR KEENWA,

How do I know if I have mummy issues? The woman I've been seeing refuses to commit to me unless I sort through them. I breastfed until six months only, so totally under the Byron standard. Any ideas where I should start? - Mummy's Boy

DEAR MUMMY'S BOY, So I’m thinking she wants you off the titty... metaphorically. Like if you are co-sleeping well into your third decade, even by Bay standards, that's pretty immature. Do you expect your woman to do all the emotional labour? Are you still looking at her to get what you didn't get from your mother? Look, every one got a mama, and everyone got mama issues. If you don't examine that blueprint she gave you for interacting with the feminine, it'll play out subconsciously, like an evil puppet on yo shoulder, turning you into a sulking man bitch when 'mama' doesn't give you what you need. The cure? Embrace your inner mother and your own strong feminine nature.

The music has meaning and purpose, playing with the not so great parts of life and romance. It's not a downer but it won't get you on da D-floor this Saturday night but hey, we can all relate to our own late-night feelings any day of the week, right.

BOOKS FOR Y

This week's review

TITLE: Tell Me More AUTHOR: Kelly Corrigan NUMBER OF PAGES: 256 EST. READ TIME: 2 hours 34 minutes PRICE: $14.99 WHAT'S IT ABOUT? After the death of her father and best

friend Kelly Corrigan sat back and started questioning the impact their lives made on her own. Burdened with the journey of life without them she investigated what it was that made them special and how she could learn to say the things she had been afraid to. These include finding the strength to say ‘no’, being brave enough to say ‘I love you’ and accepting the things that on the surface, are very difficult.

WHO ITS FOR: Anyone who is on the cusp of a difficult

conversation or needing a shift in the way they think.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Kelly Corrigan navigates

through her grief in such an eloquent way. Writing about what it means to be a parent, a friend and a partner. Each chapter is devoted to a different subject matter but they all connect to one another, pieces of string tied together with no real end. Kind of like life. Tell Me More provides space to reflect on what matters most and shines light on the way in which we communicate with one another.

NOTABLE QUOTE: "That's how it works: someone

important believes in us, loudly and with conviction and against all substantiation, and over time, we begin to believe, too - not in our shot at perfection, mind you, but in the good enough version of us that they have reflected."
