Back for its third year on Saturday, Festival of the Seas kicks off with a beach clean-up at Main Beach from 11am, followed by free festival fun at Byron Bay Brewery from 2pm. Designed to celebrate, build awareness of, and raise funds for marine conservation, the fest will feature live tunes from the likes of The Badlands, Shag Rock, Peach Fur, Michael Cunningham and more, with live art, raffles, guest speakers, karma kegs, family fun and other shenanigans throughout the evening. Funds from this year’s instalment will support local non-profit Positive Change for Marine Life. Another popular event returns to the Shire on Sunday in the form of the Byron2Bruns Beach Run. Funds raised from the two fun runs (5km and 10km) kicking off at the Brunswick SLSC at 8:30am will go directly to the surf club. If you’re still keen to register, head to byron2brunsbeachrun.com. It’s also the last Tuesday of the month, which spells Slinging Plates night at Barrio. This month, Dennis Baker, Head Chef at Shelter in Lennox, will be whipping up $10 and $20 share plates alongside Barrio’s Francisco Smoje, with $10 glasses of wine by Ochota Barrels at Addley Clark Fine Wines. Yum!

TITLE: State of The Union: A Marriage in Ten Parts AUTHOR: Nick Hornby NUMBER OF PAGES: 97 EST. READ TIME: 2 hours 15 minutes PRICE: $18.80 WHAT'S IT ABOUT? Tom and Louise are married.

Well, sort of. After an episode of infidelity they are working through their marital woes at weekly therapy sessions. In State Of The Union we meet the couple before every session of therapy as they discuss the state of their relationship over a drink at the local pub. Each chapter a different week, a different conversation, and yet another argument. Desperate to make it work Tom and Louise trying to figure out where they go from here. Whilst the two are so hell bent on pleading their case what ensues is something far more profound, pure, unbridled honesty. A hilarious representation of the age old saying ‘behind closed doors’.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Nick Hornby wrote High

Fidelity, About A Boy, Juliet, Naked and Fever Pitch. If that doesn’t entice you I don’t know what will. Hornby manages to so eloquently write about what it means to be married. He shares with us an emotional intimacy with his characters, who are so flawed and at the same time so perfectly funny.

With Caitlin Cady

This week's mantra DROP A BLESSING BOMB.

This column is part of a 4-part series on daily rituals that will help you retrain your mind and reclaim the goodness, joy and delight in your life by cultivating a positive perspective. Catch up on past columns on the Byron Bazaar website!

RITUAL 1: PEACE OUT. Start your day in service and you’ll not only bring more meaning and connection to your day, but you’ll also cultivate more compassion. Offering a little loving kindness to the world reconnects us with our humanity, reminds us of our kinship, and helps us lean into compassion and connection rather than judgment and separation. Blissful bonus: the compassion you offer toward others is in direct relation to the compassion you’re able to offer yourself. Less judgement and less perfectionistic punishment add up to more happiness and joy for all.

BEAUTY ROOM FOR RENT

Above a beautiful busy hair salon with its own sink. Includes free Wifi, electricity and aircon/heating. Communal kitchen and bathroom. Cross-promotion opportunities with salon $275 plus gst per week - 0406 610 1480

So take a beat to make an offering from the heart and drop a bliss bomb of benevolence into the world. It’s simple to do: With your eyes closed, focus your attention on someone in the world who could do with a dose of love, tenderness, and compassion. It could be someone you know who is going through a challenging time, a group of people who are suffering, or just a general wish for the world. (It might even be someone who you have beef with. That’s black belt shit, but it’s magic. Try it and watch how it transforms your feels.) Whoever is the benefactor of your blessing bomb today, hold them in your heart for a moment and direct love their way. Embrace them with good vibes. For you, this might take shape as a feeling, visualising light around them, or simply repeating a blessing like “may they be happy, may they be well, may they feel safe, may they feel free.” Send a Peace Out, in whatever way feels most natural to you.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

ON THURSDAY THE SUN MOVES INTO

practical and meticulous Virgo. During the next month we all have a chance to focus on details and work in a methodical way towards what we want to achieve. Health and lifestyle related issues may become increasingly important and it’s a great time to embark on a new health regime. Venus and Mars, the two archetypes for relationships, also reside in Virgo and come to an exact union during the weekend. They have been moving at a similar pace and have been in close proximity to each other for the last 10 days, first in Leo and now in Virgo, where they hang out together until the end of this month. This conjunction might instigate a rather critical analysis about the quality of any serious relationship, and the deeper you look the more faults you may find. The search for perfection and the longing for this never-attainable state is the main downfall for Virgo! You fare better if you also contemplate your blessings and the things that are working out, just to find some balance. On Tuesday and Wednesday Venus and Mars form an earth trine to Uranus, the big mover and shaker! There is a possibility for great creative inspiration and plenty of energy to put it into practice, but if you lack inspiration you may find yourself very critical with others and/or yourself. Frustrated energy might leak out in very unpleasant ways… For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

The 9 of Wands gifts you with great resilience. Whatever you get dished up this week you have the stamina to deal with it in a constructive way. You may be a pillar of strength for your nearest and dearest, and can help them contend with doubt and frustration.

h TAURUS

The Prince of Cups symbolises the lover within. This week you may experience some inner tension concerning whether to follow your own needs or be in service for others. When love and devotion are felt as duty, they lose their spark. Allow yourself to fulfil your own emotional needs; afterwards you are much more fun to be with!

i GEMINI

The Ace of Wands brings the gift of unbridled energy and its force can be used in a constructive or destructive way. Applied in a positive way you can generate great enthusiasm, courage and confidence to achieve the almost impossible. If you don’t utilise it constructively you may end up frustrated and irritated.

j CANCER

The 8 of Disks is very aligned with the Virgo-spirit. It suggests moving consciously and diligently in all your dealings with the world around you. Take care of details and give yourself enough time for it; this way you can avoid any chaotic situations that threaten your inner safety-zone.

BY GISELA

c SAGITTARIUS

l VIRGO

d CAPRICORN

The 6 of Cups promises a wonderful, fulfilling week. Socialising with friends, family and like-minded folks holds many little pleasurable moments. You may especially feel inspired to hang out more with children. This is a time to nurture, give and receive, and it all comes effortlessly…

The 5 of Wands symbolises irritation and frustration about how slow or challenging things are developing. If you are reactive it only compounds the problems you may experience. Be kind and caring towards yourself, as you would be to others, and once you feel empathy for yourself you may find ways to overcome self-sabotage.

a LIBRA

The Temperance Tarot card describes the true Libran goal of inner and outer balance. You truly feel on track when you can harmonise any opposing feelings within, and you discover grounds which transcend and encompass all of them. The inner alchemy you practise ripples out into the world around you and affects people in a positive way.

b SCORPIO

The Knight of Cups offers you a gift; often it is wrapped up as delightful news that pulls on your heart strings and softens your being with tender feelings. Romance might be in the air, or at least you are satisfied with your relationship status. This may also be a highly creative week!

The World Tarot card is perfect for the Archer, who is always ready to embark on a new adventure. You might be busy making plans, completing one stage of your life and getting ready for the next one. Your outlook is positive and you are working on making dreams come true…

The Princess of Wands symbolises a truly free and liberated spirit. With her by your side you might feel inspired to step off the trodden path, and do something different and adventurous. You may cast aside the chains of commitment and duty for a while and allow yourself unrestricted fun.

e AQUARIUS

The Strength Tarot card gives you plenty of get up and go. Your vitality and enthusiasm naturally remove any obstacles that may be in your way, sometimes without you even noticing it. You radiate well-being and confidence, and others might quietly admire you for how you get on with life.

f PISCES

With the 9 of Disks drawn you may experience a new level of confidence. Almost magically this inner buoyancy helps you to attract what you want. Isn’t it wonderful to be able to enjoy a sweeter and more refined lifestyle? Express your gratitude in the most creative ways possible.

DEAR KEENWA, I'm a Gemini. I saw you roll your eyes. Stop already. This is what I'm talking about, and as an air sign, I'm always talking, but zodiac shaming. I'm done. Do you know the stats on astrological signber bullying? I've at the point where I’m afraid of sharing who I am for fear of ridicule or worse, rejection. Is there anything you can do? - Cosmic Cruelty

DEAR COSMIC CRUELTY, Firstly, you must have a Pisces rising, ammirright? The victimisation is a dead giveaway. The reason I got into astrology myself was so I could name, shame and blame, and categorise peeps into good, bad, safe or psycho. Before I realised there was a light and shadow to everything, I too used it as a separatist language of duality. Thing is these labels are the perfect segway to transcend beyond all reasonable doubt into the sea of oneness that connects us. We are all important parts with our individual quirks that make up the whole. It's the age of Aquarius, and despite those guys hating public displays of affection, they sure do know what's up in an evolutionary kinda way.

This week's recommendation ALBUM TITLE: Run Home Slow ARTIST: The Teskey Brothers RELEASED: Aug 2019 GENRE: Rhythm and Blues / Soul

BIO: The Melbs outfits 2nd album has been eagerly anticipated following their debut album in 2017. The lineup includes 2 brothers who are joined by 2 more, Run Home Slow is currently the top-selling Australian act in the ARIA album chart.

WHAT TO EXPECT: To think you've been sent back in time

to the 60s Soul/RnB heydays of Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Percy Sledge et al. Top-quality musicianship, masterful vocals and the beautiful warmth of each note and beat. A home run on all 11 tracks.

WHAT WE LIKE: In the charts, it's a breath of fresh

vintage air if there can be such a thing, it is great to see them outselling the Queen and Elton John soundtracks. Their sound is really defined and the music just washes over you as you feel the emotions of each track. The down to earth blues storytelling of the songs resonates with guys and their perspective. That is not to say gals won't like it either but I am a guy and that is what I felt in the music. It feels like your favourite pair of old jeans.

Craig Evans A.K.A. Banana Man

@BYRONFARMERS HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN BYRON’S “BANANA MAN”? You know, they started growing bananas in Mullumbimby back in the 1890’s. I haven’t been going quite that long! I’ve been living in the area about 30 years, and selling at the market for 12 – and I love it! WHEN YOU'RE NOT FARMING OR SELLING YOUR CROPS AT BYRON’S FARMERS MARKET, WHAT ELSE DO YOU LIKE TO DO? Surf and surf. WHAT DO YOU THINK BYRON NEEDS MORE OR LESS OF? You can never have too many bananas, and people who love to eat them. YOU ARE OFF TO A FANCY DRESS PARTY - WHO WOULD GO AS AND WHY? No doubt – “Eric the Bananaman” - check him out on Youtube. COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE - "I LOVE ……..to live by the seasons. They tell me all I need to know about what to plant and when." WHAT INSPIRATIONAL CHARACTERS HAVE YOU COME ACROSS IN YOUR WORK? Kylie and Tom have done an amazing job at the Byron Farmers Market. We just moved everyone and everything to our new home at the Cavanbah Centre. They both support and promote the market – and make sure it remains authentic. That’s very important to me, and to all the producers. WHAT’S THE PICK OF THE BANANA BUNCH HERE IN BYRON? There are over 500 varieties of bananas in the world. Cavendish and Lady Fingers are the most popular in Australia, so that’s what I grow mainly – and they just happen to be the tastiest.

If you like supporting local farmers, eating fresh local produce and eating bananas. Then say "hi" to Craig and his mates at the Byron Farmers Market every Thursday from 7am to 11am at the Cavanbah Centre.
