THE BYRON INTERNATIONAL FILM
Festival kicks off this weekend, with some incredible films screening at Palace Cinemas, Byron Theatre, Pighouse Flicks, Brunswick Picture House and Murwillumbah Regent Cinema from this Saturday through next Sunday. Between the quirky shorts by local filmmakers, dramatic features such as A Son of Man, Ecuador’s submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars, and gripping docos like Kifaru, which tracks the extinction crisis in real time, it’s a ripper of a program.

3. The first mobile phone ever produced cost a whopping $2,000. True or false?
1992. I was waiting to board a flight to Sydney and looking for something to read. A little paperback in the bookstore caught my eye - “The Popcorn Report”, written by Faith Popcorn. As well as wondering if that could really be her name, I was drawn to the headline – “Faith Popcorn, the Nostradamus of marketing”. Now we have all heard of Nostradamus and his famous prophecies. He may have written them nearly 500 years ago, but those prophecies are still in print, and he is still revered. I thought it would be quite a coup for a market researcher to be compared to the guru of all forecasters.
4. When was the first hand-held mobile phone released by Motorola? A. 1967 B. 1970 C. 1973
I bought the book, shoved it into my backpack and boarded the plane. I had forgotten all about that little book until last week, when I was clearing out the study. Flicking through the pages now, I wondered how history might judge these predictions from 1992.
5. As our tech world ramps up, approximately 5.2 billion people in the world have mobile devices. This accounts for 2/3rds of the world’s population. True or false?
I have to say, not earth shattering, but not bad. Popcorn did identify a key consumer trend - the desire to buy things that would simplify their lives, be customised, be home delivered, and yet still provide a sense of connection. Tick! Accuracy dropped when she identified solutions. Phone booths, where you could plug your PC in to retrieve emails and faxes; mini Walkman tape recorders, stacked with pre-recorded, personal music play lists; one-stop call centres, that you could ring to retrieve all the news, movie gossip, restaurant reviews, and latest entertainment offerings. These products may have been produced, but 25 years on they have all become redundant - overrun by wifi coffee shops, iPads, Spotify, Google search, podcasts and the ubiquitous smart phone.
PG 5 Answers 1
1. When was Nostradamus born? A. 1503 B. 1513 C. 1523 2. What was Nostradamus’s book of predictions called? A. Le Predictablé B. Les Prophéties C. la Profitables
6. What did the first SMS message ever sent say? A. It works! B. Merry Christmas C. #YOLO 7. What was the first domain name ever registered back in 1985? A. symbolics.com B. microsoft.com C. kpsg.com 8. When was the world wide web commissioned? A. 1985 B. 1990 C. 1995 9. What does HTML stand for? A. Hypertext Markup Language B. Hyperlink Matching Linear C. Hyper Matrix Landing 10. Feeling like a dime a dozen these days, when was the first internet virus identified? A. 1996 B. 1999 C. 2003
When Faith wrote her report the world wide web was still in diapers and mobile phones were very expensive, very large and very unreliable. The blending of miniaturised batteries, blanket mobile phone services and a rampant internet has changed the world in ways Faith Popcorn could never have predicted. Smart phones are THE trend. To stay in print for 500 years, Faith should have followed Nostradamus’s lead. He used vague and obscure language to describe events, so that future followers could interpret and retrofit his predictions to match almost any modern catastrophe – AFTER the event takes place. It is all smoke and mirrors really. When you’re making predictions for a living, hindsight review is a wonderful thing! I predict your coffee will be going cold if you don’t get on with your day. Put down the smart phone, pull out the trivia, test your smarts - and stay chilled! Tony, Byron Bazaar

This week's mantra DREAM, SPECIFICALLY.
Dream big is something we hear a lot throughout our lives. But I think the size of our dreams is less important than the specificity of our dreams. If I ask you, right now, to tell me what you want, I bet you couldn’t. At first, you’re going to disagree with this statement. But take a beat and marinate on it. Consider one area of your life where you have a big goal or a big dream. Do you really know what you want? Could you fill an entire page with the specifics of that dream or goal? We spend so much of our lives working toward goals and dreams that we haven’t even defined! It’s no wonder we feel like we’re chasing our tails sometimes. Because you can’t achieve your dreams until you commit to them. And in order to commit to a dream, you need to know exactly what it is. Don’t just draw a rough sketch of your dream. Really take the time to dream in full colour. How you define it is up to you. It might be qualities or terms or even feelings. Fill a page. Sit with it. Erase and revise. Let it be a living document, free to be edited, full of aliveness and rich in detail. The more life-like you make your dream, the more your dream can become your life. As writer Alan Cohen put it, “asking for what you want is a prerequisite for getting it.” So ask. Specifically. Before you go chasing a dream, take the time to know what it is. P.S. Need a bit of help getting clear on what you want, here are four resources I have found to be very useful: 1. Meditate! Srsly. Intuition, clarity and focus are yours for the taking. If you're new to meditation, pop over to caitlincady.com/pages/meditation-resources for tools to get you started. 2. Read The Desire Map by Danielle LaPorte (book) 3. Read The Four Desires by Rod Stryker (book) 4. Check out To Be Magnetic by Lacy Phillips (online manifestation course)

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST
THE SUBTLE EFFECT OF LAST WEDNESDAY’S
Mercury/Neptune water trine, from Scorpio to Pisces, can still be felt on Thursday. This aspect has a dreamy or visionary quality and enhances creative endeavours. It may not work so well when you are on a tight schedule. In communication matters it could bring confusion or misunderstandings. Watch out for the things that are not said and observe body-language for clues. The weekend offers a chance for some deep, meaningful and clarifying conversations, due to a Mercury/Pluto sextile. Monday is a great day to get things done. Venus in intense Scorpio is feeling safe and secure while sextile to Saturn in Capricorn; therefore she is very responsible, committed and cooperative. Her mood is getting rather elated and she appreciates art and beauty tremendously for a couple of days, when she trines Neptune in Pisces (exact on Tuesday). In combination with her aspect to Saturn, a window of opportunity opens that helps to make plans more concrete and vague wishes more solid, therefore consciously creating new realities. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

The 10 of Cups promises great joy, happiness and company. You feel best when surrounded by your nearest and dearest, and appreciated as a valuable member of your community. You radiate wellbeing and your presence lifts the spirit of those around you. What a great time for caring and sharing!
h TAURUS
The Fool Tarot card heralds a new beginning and a joyful embrace of a more adventurous phase of your life. You feel carefree and courageous, and you say ‘yes’ more often, rather than ‘no’ or ‘maybe’. Old fears lose their grip on you and you love the feeling of liberation and flexibility.
i GEMINI
BY GISELA
k LEO
The Princess of Swords is the archetype of a free, untamed and sometimes rebellious spirit. She enhances your need for self-direction and selfassertion to a level where even the slightest infringement of your freedom may be felt as huge restriction that might generate a big roar!
l VIRGO
The Ace of Swords brings the great gift of mental clarity. It provides direction and a safe, practical way to move forward. You may be able to see any issue that you have been procrastinating on for a while, in a new light. This is a good week to resolve situations that have been weighing you down.
a LIBRA
The Temperance Tarot card has a true Gemini spirit! The task is that of an alchemist; the merging and blending of opposites in order to create a greater, more balanced whole. Polarities that you experience, in particular concerning dreams and visions, may dissolve and transform into something new.
With The 9 of Disks drawn and in true Libran fashion you are ready to enjoy the finer things that life has to offer. This is the week to indulge in art, fashion and culture. Maybe you are ready for a spring-clean, or to redecorate your home or even ponder a new lifestyle that grants you more comfort.
j CANCER
b SCORPIO
The Queen of Wands is a highly spirited and wise woman. With her as guidance you trust your intuition and feel confident in your abilities. Great insight may come from relating to others. Your caring compassion has always been there; it is a big part of you, but now you can also create boundaries when needed.
When the Hanged Man appears you are urged to end a paralysing struggle against things you can’t change. Surrender is the remedy! Start by simply pausing to reflect on your situation, drop all urgency and scan the horizon for a new perspective. There are always more options and perspectives to consider than those you are currently fixated on.
c SAGITTARIUS
The 10 of Wands symbolises a state of holding back. You may be unusually unsure of yourself and you might feel like you are riding through life with one foot on the accelerator and one on the brake at the same time! Your inner struggle is exhausting, therefore allow yourself to rest up until you feel more clear. This won’t take long…
d CAPRICORN
The Ace of Wands is the big gift of almost unlimited, pure and raw but highly creative force. It needs to be channelled into a worthwhile mission, otherwise it might turn destructive. You are fired up and absolutely confident to achieve what you set out for. You can move mountains right now!.
e AQUARIUS
The 8 of Wands indicates a week when time seems to speed up, just because there is so much to organise and so many different things to take care of! Clear communication and quick action are needed to get all your ducks in a row. Enjoy the ride!
f PISCES
The Moon Tarot card suits the Fishes perfectly. It’s the card that best describes the deep soul search that you are constantly on, and that distracts you from worldly business at times. Make sure you have enough time in nature and maybe close to flowing water, to contemplate ideas and creative inspiration. It is not yet the right time to make big decisions.

This week's recommendation
ALBUM TITLE: Why Me? Why Not. (Deluxe Edition) ARTIST: Liam Gallagher RELEASED: September 2019 GENRE: Rock BIO: Have we moved on from introducing Liam as
the lead singer of Britpop legends Oasis? Has Liam moved on? Following brother Noel's exit from Oasis, the remaining members formed Beady Eye who then broke up in 2014. This is Liam's 2nd solo album release following As You Were.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Twisted lyrics of clichés and truisms
that on paper seem nonsensical but once listened to Liam shows you he is in total command of 14 solid rock songs. Some inevitable side trips down memory lane with nostalgic pals, The Beatles, and Oasis.
WHAT WE LIKE: Tunes that get inside your melon
without it getting twisted too far for too long. From the raspy harmonica on the pounding opening track Shockwave to the strings on One of Us to Liam's Lennon-Esque voice on Once it's mostly a fast-paced album without a dull moment. Add juke joint piano riffs, whistling, organs, percussion, with top-shelf production and it all works like an entertaining simile or overly long sentence... it’s like a big friggin tank launching an arsenal of rock ‘n’ roll artillery assaults on your ears as it parades the sonic battlefield. Liam does what he does best – being the rowdy and dazzling, the enigmatic yet clearly understood rock band frontman and lead singer. Showmanship. Turn it up, loudly.
STANDOUT TRACKS: Shockwave, Now That I've Found You, Glimmer.
PERFECT FOR: Discovering new music you think
you've heard before. When you Imagine you’re the lead singer of a band.
LISTEN IN IF YOU LIKE: Stone Roses, Sam Fender, Oasis (obviously), The Beatles/Lennon (definitely maybe). Recommended by Dan McGill.

Thank you to all who came and supported Byron Bay Guitar Festival. The third annual Byron Bay Guitar Festival (BBGF), an independently organised event that celebrates music inspired by the guitar and communities built from live music, rocked Byron Bay Brewery again last weekend (Sat 12 & Sun 13 October). Defying presumptions about what a ‘Guitar Festival’ has to offer, BBGF 2019 displayed a diversity of artists, genres, masterclass topics, and instrument displays to appeal to just about every lover of music and of any age. Folk, roots, blues, jazz, world, reggae, psychedelic, soul, funk, punk, rock, electronic, pop, classical, experimental, grunge, indie, and everything in between – there was something for lovers of all music.

This week's review
TITLE: Conversations with Friends AUTHOR: Sally Rooney NUMBER OF PAGES: 336 EST. READ TIME: 4 hours 58 minutes PRICE: $16.80 WHAT'S IT ABOUT? Frances and Bobbi are best friends
and, in the past, have been lovers too. In the evenings they perform as a spoken word duo. Cool headed, smart and merely adults they are approached by a well regarded writer, Melissa, who wants to write about them for a profile piece. When Frances and Bobbi meet both Melissa and her husband they begin to form new relationships between one another and with themselves. Things soon become messy when Frances and Bobbi’s friendship is called into question as they start to play a game that they are perhaps too young to understand.
WHO IT'S FOR: I think anyone in their 20’s and 30’s will enjoy this brilliant coming of age book.
WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Sally Rooney has an amazing
way of transporting you to the corner of a party, or a seat at a dinner table where a fight has erupted. Her dialogue is dazzling, effortless. Conversations with Friends is about love, friendship and self discovery and hits the right note page after page.
NOTABLE QUOTE: "Things and people moved around me,
taking positions in obscure hierarchies, participating in systems I didn't know about and never would. A complex network of objects and concepts. You live through certain things before you understand them. You can't always take the analytical position"

CASTING CALL - HAVE YOU EVER FELT LONELY? Have you ever felt lonely? Well you’re certainly not alone in that. It might be for a short time. It might seem endless. Loneliness generally happens when life has been disrupted - there’s no shame in that. 1 in 4 people feel lonely at some time in their lives – and we think that’s just too many. We’re filming a series of short videos about how loneliness impacts every day people, all ages and all walks of life. We’re looking for genuine stories to show that loneliness happens to us all, how it makes us feel and to inspire people to help end loneliness for good. If you’re prepared to share your story with the camera (we will help with that), live in Northern Rivers or Gold Coast and want to be part of a movement to raise awareness of this issue, we’d love to hear from you. Just contact marketing@feroscare.com.au. Shooting will take place on 28th and 29th October.

DEAR KEENWA, What's artistic about nudity? Isn't it just exhibitionism? Also when did the bush come back? - Male Gaze
DEAR MALE GAZE, Don't quote me, but I think bush began to bite back when Trump grabbed. Contrary to politician's beliefs, nudity is natural. Nudity does not mean sex. Perhaps with art, if we tilt our heads just right, we can see the message that the human body in it's natural form is pretty damn beautiful as is. Perhaps in art, our kids can adore their own flesh and blood, and can look at the planet in the same appreciating way, and stop mucking it up. Perhaps in art, we can decolonise our bodies, teach basic pleasure, consent, and to feel good naked. Or we could just continue to exploit our clothed selves on Insta and keep serving the capitalist machina that makes way too many bucks off our body hatred.
DEAR KEENWA, I understand that poetry resonates with romanticism. Does this mean that the more someone likes poetry, the more of a romantic they are? Asking for a friend. - Romance Revival
DEAR ROMANCE REVIVAL, You would think so. Yet I once dated a man that held me captive as he read me his slightly depressing poetry in front my car headlights on a cold, dark night, his greasy hair covering his face, crack running through his veins, whilst my friends giggled on in the car, watching. We weren't allowed to leave until he finished. Daybreak finally arrived. Another fella did the same on an isolated bridge in the wee hours of dawn, then threatened to jump afterwards, which confused me, as after listening to him for so many hours, should really have been me jumping. I don't know if its any coincidence that realism directly followed the era of romanticism.

YOU ARE A FILM MAKER WHO LOVES TO CAPTURE THE ESSENCE OF SURFING - WHICH DO YOU PREFER, FILM MAKING OR SURFING? The easy answer would be both, but to choose one, I would have to say surfing. Growing up around the ocean it’s been such a big influence on my life and if it wasn’t for surfing I wouldn’t be making films. COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE – "I LOVE... not having phone service..." THANK YOU MOTHER WAS SHOT ON LOCATION IN SOUTH AFRICA, INDONESIA AND AUSTRALIA, AND NOW NORDURLAND TAKES YOU TO THE NORTH ATLANTIC. WHERE TO NEXT? Torren Martyn and I are about to head over to Europe for a few months. The plan is to start in Scotland and finish somewhere in West Africa. We're actually finishing up a film at the moment from three months spent traveling around New Zealand on motorbikes, so this next trip is a sort of follow up to that. IF YOU WENT TO A FANCY-DRESS PARTY, WHO WOULD YOU GO AS, AND WHY? Anyone that wears a cape. There’s not enough opportunities to wear capes. BYRON IS RENOWNED FOR ITS WILD TURKEYS – HAVE YOU EVER INCLUDED A BRUSH TURKEY IN ONE OF YOUR FILMS? Haha no I haven’t. I think they deserve a film though. I’m sure someone is working on one…? WHERE CAN OUR READERS CATCH YOUR LATEST FILM PROJECT? Nordurland is screening at the Byron Bay Film Festival on Monday the 21st at 7:30pm. It’s playing with a couple of other films that look great so if you’re interested in tickets you can get them at bbff.com.au
