There are more thrills to be had at The Northern – sorry, the Halloween Hotel – on Saturday night. Creep on down from 9pm for spooky tunes, drink specials, prizes for most outrageous costumes and even a coffin photo booth. For those keen to watch the race that stops a nation, there will be plenty of places to catch the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday afternoon. Head to Byron Bowlo for free barefoot bowls and a Stone & Wood pop-up bar; Byron Bay Services Club for $35 two-course luncheon; or Beach Hotel for a garden party – all with prizes for best dressed. Get your bets on before the 3pm race time. Saying nup to the Cup? Mez Club invites you to dress up and join them for a boozy lunch, with $1 from every drink purchased between 12-6pm going to the RSPCA. Across town, No Bones will be serving a five-course vegetarian tasting menu with your favourite tipple at 12:30pm (from $85), while up in Newrybar, Harvest is the place to wear your fanciest fascinator, with profits from its $95 four-course luncheon supporting Horse Rescue Australia. Also on Tuesday, Byron Writers Festival will host Clare Bowditch at Byron Theatre from 6pm, to discuss her powerful memoir Your Own Kind of Girl ($35, byroncentre.com.au).

PUT “COFFEE” INTO GOOGLE SEARCH AND YOU GET 4.2
billion hits. In 2018 the world bought 10 billion kilograms of coffee beans. Australians spent $2 billion on coffee last year, in 20,000 cafés that employ 140,000 people. Of the coffees we order, one quarter are takeaways. Ahhhhh, I need one right now! Coffee - the legal drug we can’t live without. Once upon a time I could make a decent coffee at home – not any more. I can’t compete with the coffee shops, cafés and carts I pass every morning on my way to work. They breed like rabbits, and they all make a better coffee than I can. I grew up in Melbourne – supposedly the home of coffee in Australia, if not the world. But why would that be? Surely anyone can buy the same beans, grinder, or coffee machine. Every café now has milk in all its forms – soy, almond, fat, skinny, skim. What could make Melbourne coffee better than Sydney, Brisbane, Byron Bay, or Mullum coffee? Here’s some answers. First, coffee does taste better in colder weather – and Melbourne has an advantage there. Second, despite its Arabic and African history, coffee and Italy are pigeon pairs - and there are more Italians in Melbourne than anywhere else in Australia. Third, baristas - the person in charge of the espresso machine. There is no doubt an art and a science to forcing hot pressurized water, at just the right temperature, for just the right amount of time, over beans ground to just the right texture – to create the perfect crema. Importantly, the master barista also commands the final flourish - some latte art - and Melbourne has better graffiti artists, who double up as baristas. But all is not lost for the local café scene – there is another significant stat. Aussies throw out 2.6 billion coffee cups each year – imagine all of those on our beaches! Solving that problem, whilst still providing smiles with the daily caffeine hit is a trend where Byron can lead the world. Check out “Watch This Space” for some young, local entrepreneurs who are doing just that. Stay alert, caffeine responsibly, smile generously and stay chilled. Tony, Byron Bazaar

This week's mantra
LET ME INCARNATE MULTIPLE TIMES IN THIS LIFETIME. Empty me out. Tip me over. Shake out my contents. So that I might have the space to begin again. Dissolve me into darkness. Take apart my parts. Return me to stardust. To the pure light of potential. So I can become something new. Something higher, greater, lighter. Let me incarnate multiple times In this lifetime. Each time I am born again, Set me alight. Catch fire to my heart, let purpose burn bright. Circulate new ideas within me. Bless me with fresh perspectives. Bestow me with boundless courage. Remind me to keep forgiveness at the ready, always. Sanctify my wholeness As both raw and refined. True and steady. Fierce and full of grace. Let me meet myself with patience and kindness as I lead myself ever onward, ever inward, ever upward, heading home to myself. Over and over and over again.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST
ON THURSDAY MERCURY AND VENUS
finally unite, just at the moment when Mercury prepares for his retrograde motion. Both planets plus the Sun are in Scorpio. Here is a marvellous opportunity to find a deeper alignment between what you feel, what you know and what you are identified with. From this experience you may draw a new expression of your true self. On Monday Mercury’s three weeks retro-sojourn starts. He stays in probing, passionate and sometimes forceful Scorpio throughout this time and only moves on into Sagittarius by mid-December. This gives plenty of time for deep soul-searching and reconsideration of many aspects of your life. As always in Mercury retro times, allow more time for travel, factor in delays and be prepared to clear up misunderstandings as soon as possible. On Saturday Lady Venus moves into fiery, right and ready Sagittarius where she resides for 3 ½ weeks. She gets bored quite easily and longs for more interesting and adventurous times. Monday is also a great day for a healing session, courtesy of Venus’ trine to Chiron, which may help you to be better equipped to deal with the next challenge; a Mars/Pluto square (exact on Tuesday). Mars in Libra abhors confrontations, but at the same time with Sun and Mercury in Scorpio, there is a great need to dig deep and uncover ‘the truth’, otherwise there is no way to find equilibrium. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

The 9 of Disks symbolises great progress in many areas of your life. Sometimes you may have to stop and look around you, to realise what a wonderful reality you have already manifested. Count your blessings, enjoy your lifestyle and graciously accept the finer things in your life that come your way.

The Sun Tarot card is the quintessential archetype of your sign. It is the fire, energy, optimism and creative impulse that you bring into the world. The Sun is also benevolent, inclusive and non-judgemental! Shine, share your light and have fun!
l VIRGO
The Strength Tarot card gives you plenty of get-up-and-go. Your energy levels are high and your zest for life may also be an inspiration for others. Your charm, charisma and passion get you what you want and your creative output is at an all-time high.
The Ace of Discs offers the big gift of inner security and stability. Many of your worries are just habitual. In reality they have no reason to preoccupy your mind and stress you out. If you have doubts about your success and question your actual impact in the world, ask a friend for feedback.
i GEMINI
a LIBRA
h TAURUS
The Emperor Tarot card represents masculine, outgoing and active leadership. Your mind is clear and on target, therefore you can confidently restructure your environment. This is the week to get organised and create order out of chaos. Things work out well if you structure your time and stick to a plan.
With Mercury turning retrograde and the 4 of Cups drawn, the time is ripe to re-evaluate your situation. You may frequently fret about making decisions, but now it is not advisable to push for conclusions. By mid-December you’ll know what you want without even thinking about it; you’ll just feel it. Then it is time to act.
j CANCER
b SCORPIO
The World Tarot card offers the opportunity to grow beyond your former limitations and find more meaning, purpose and fulfilment. By smartly applying your gifts and talents you can improve your environment and your personal experience. It may start small, at home or in your neighbourhood, but it soon ripples out far and wide.

The Empress is the archetype for feminine leadership. The quest is feeling your way through the labyrinth of your emotions, while staying empowered and self-directed. Don’t be afraid to show your tenderness and vulnerability to others; it actually reveals your inner strength!
c SAGITTARIUS
You know what you want, but now the 6 of Swords challenges you to see yourself as part of a team. Notice how your actions and reactions impact on the people you are close to. You are challenged to consider ‘the whole’ and not just your part, while staying true to yourself.
d CAPRICORN
This week the 9 of Wands supports you in all your endeavours. Hold onto your vision during this Mercury retrograde time, even if you have to endure detours or setbacks. With your great resilience you turn these into fuel that helps you tap into hidden reserves. Don’t forget to have some fun!
e AQUARIUS
The Knight of Disks feels worn out; he has been exerting lots of energy for far too long. Now is the time to reconsider and re-evaluate whether you should continue on your well-known path, or if there is a better, smarter and easier way to manifest yourself in the world. First of all you have to rest and regain more energy.
f PISCES
With the 7 of Cups drawn you might not feel on top of things right now. Ways and means that you used to employ to distract yourself from dissatisfaction are not working any more. That leaves you with the vague feeling that it is time for a change of habits and direction. Start with one little step at a time, rather than trying to solve the whole big puzzle in one go.

DEAR KEENWA, We live a refined sugar-free life over here. Happily. But we love a hallmark holiday. With halloween approaching, any tips on how to communicate to our neighbourhood doors that my kids will be knocking on for trick or treating, that we have specific dietary requirements? - I Quit Sugar and I Like It
DEAR I QUIT SUGAR AND I LIKE IT, The obvious one would be to move out of Mullumbimby. All that vegan-ism and low protein spikes the sugar binging, they sure do make up for the lack of meat in a sweet way, don't you worry. You could also print some IQS t-shirts or goody bags and wave them in the lovely, kind candy people's faces. No need to exchange harsh words then. The most effective method I think, would be to dress your kids up as those diseased diabetic lungs on the cigarette packets.
DEAR KEENWA, I'm a cisgender male suffering deeply at the hands of my current girlfriend. Although I love her deeply, she emancipates me. All. The. Time. First it was snide comments about the way I washed up, then the way that I don't share my emotions enough for her. Even though the Notebook, gets me to shed a few. Every time. I love her, but I want my balls back. - Alpha
DEAR ALPHA, I hear you bro. It is tough out there belonging to the demographic ruling and ruining the world at the expense of those not in their demographic. For the slow ones, lets define cis male. A man who comfortably identifies with the male body assigned to them at birth, and then uses this identity to cash in on political, societal, and economical privileges offered to him on a daily basis. *editor's note, any offence caused to white, cis males was unintentional.

This week's recommendation
ALBUM TITLE: Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost – Part 2 ARTIST: Foals RELEASED: Oct 2019 GENRE: Alternative/Progressive Rock BIO: Formed around 2005, Oxford’s Foals musical
influences include Math Rock, Krautrock and Talking Heads. Only one of the current line-up completed Uni with the others quitting upon signing a record deal. Their latest self-produced release follows from part 1 of the same album released in March 2019.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Part 1 painted an apocalyptic vision
of humankind pushing against nature, increasing anxieties, less meaningful human connection and our responses to it all. Part 2’s painting is what life might be like on Earth as humankind continues our current path. Part 2 is a heavier sound.
WHAT WE LIKE: It’s ambitious songwriting, catchy
riffs, gritty guitars and tension-filled synth sounds threading together the tracks. You can rock out on Black Bull - 3 minutes of hard rock best played loud. You can dig deeper to find worldly topics debated and deciphered. Intelligently the album ends with two slower paced profound tracks. The penultimate track Into the Surf is described by lead singer, Yannis Philippakis as "This shadow of death, of someone not returning from a voyage." The 10-minute long final song Neptune is a fine farewell that could be interpreted as us escaping our mess to somewhere far, far away.
STANDOUT TRACKS: Black Bull, Into the Surf, Neptune. PERFECT FOR: Festival, stadium rock in 2019. Finding progressiveness in life and music. Feeling sophisticated.
LISTEN IN IF YOU LIKE: Two Door Cinema Club, Muse, Black Keys, Of Monsters and Men. Recommended by Dan McGill.

BOOKS FOR Y
This week's review
TITLE: She Said AUTHOR: Jodi Kantor & Megan Twohey NUMBER OF PAGES: 320 EST. READ TIME: 5 hours 43 minutes PRICE: $25.90 WHAT'S IT ABOUT? In October 2017 The New York Times
published an article by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey exposing Harvey Weinstein for committing a number of acts of sexual indiscretions against women in his professional and personal orbit. Models, actresses, staff from his own company. Innocent women living in silence, living in fear, until now. It was this article that prompted a legal investigation into Weinsteins behavior and sparked a worldwide conversation about sexual assault in the workplace and beyond. She Said is the blow by blow account of how Jodi and Megan were successful in taking down Weinstein and the after effects of their hard work.
WHO IT'S FOR: Anyone who has an interest in the events leading up to the expose of Harvey Weinstein and further understanding the #MeToo movement and how it has changed the gender equality debate. WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Even though I thought I
knew a lot about what happened when Weinstein was accused I wanted to read She Said as there was a great hype surrounding it. What I gained from reading this book was a more complex insight into how the survivors themselves were affected by speaking up and how much work was involved in proving that Harvey Weinstein was the monster he is, and how many years it took for the world to find out. It is an incredible work of non-fiction that will have you turning every page with urgency, even though you know how it ends.
NOTABLE QUOTE: "If the story was not told, nothing would change" Review written by Jessie Hilton @jessieahilton

TELL US WHERE YOU ARE FROM, AND WHAT BRINGS YOU TO BYRON? I was born in Melbourne, but grew up on the North Coast. I went to high school in Lismore and used to spend weekends in Byron Bay all the time. Now I come to Byron to run the annual Latin Fiesta and to visit friends. For me the region is a special place. YOU ARE A DANCER, CHOREOGRAPHER, INSTRUCTOR, FESTIVAL ORGANISER - WHICH DO YOU PREFER? I have done them all, however these days I focus on teaching dance and organising festivals. These have become my two biggest loves and I find them both very rewarding. COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE – "I LOVE... music, dance, different cultures, good food, a glass of French Rosé and traveling to exotic places." WHICH DANCE STYLES ARE THE HARDEST TO MASTER? Hmm, it’s all about having good mentors and practice. I am currently challenging myself to get better at Dominican Bachata and Kizomba. IF YOU WENT TO A FANCY-DRESS PARTY, WHO WOULD YOU GO AS, AND WHY? It would be Latin inspired for sure – maybe a Cuban dancer. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO FOR TIME-OUT? I practice Yoga, spend time in nature, play with my cats, travel, do creative projects and enjoy the company of my partner, family and friends. BYRON IS RENOWNED FOR ITS WILD BRUSH TURKEYS - IS THERE A VERSION OF A LATIN TURKEY DANCE? Hehe… most Latin dance styles are lead and follow, so the masculine and feminine sides are at play. If you watch some Latin dance performances, they do put on quite a show!
Byron Latin Fiesta 31st Oct – 3rd Nov at the Byron Theatre & Community Centre
