Stevie Wright’s classic Australian song, Evie – parts I, II & III - (Spotify it – claaasssic!!) inspired me to write a 3-part story about water. I hope I can maintain your interest over 3 weeks as well as Stevie did over 11 minutes 11 seconds! I will set the scene for part 1 by looking back in time. In 1908, Dorothea Mackeller’s most famous poem My Country described the beauty and terror of Australia’s relationship with water. I love a sunburnt country / A land of sweeping plains Of ragged mountain ranges / Of droughts and flooding rains. I love her far horizons / I love her jewel-sea Her beauty and her terror / The wide brown land for me!

Water is like a wayward child - it never seems to be where we want it to be, when we want it to be there. And yet, water covers 70% of the Earth's surface and surrounds Australia. Of course, the sea we see and play on is undrinkable. Turning saltwater into fresh water is an expensive, power hungry and often impractical task. But nature has a solution. We finally got to feel and taste nature’s water desalination and fresh-water transportation system over the weekend, thanks to the wonderful, magical rain clouds. We talk a lot about water, but I don’t think we think enough about clouds. Sea water continually heats, evaporates, condenses, forms clouds, cools, rains, is stored or runs off back into the sea, and starts the cycle all over again. A beautiful, sustainable, virtuous water circle. We need to imagine and construct global clouds that deliver water, rather than data. In 1966, Joni Mitchell hinted at the complexity of clouds in her song Both Sides Now. Rows and floes of angel hair / And ice cream castles in the air / And feather canyons everywhere / I've looked at clouds that way. But now they only block the sun / They rain and snow on everyone / So many things I would have done / But clouds got in my way. I've looked at clouds from both sides now / From up and down, and still somehow / It's cloud illusions I recall / I really don't know clouds at all.

That was 53 years ago – plenty of time to get to know about clouds. I’m not sure we have. As the world heats up, keeping clouds chilled will be critical. Maybe we can help - Byron knows all about stayin’ chilled ….. enjoy the weekend. Tony, Byron Bazaar

1. The Kola Superdeep Borehole in Russia is the world’s deepest hole. It is 12 kms deep, but interestingly, only how wide. A. 22 cm B. 36 cm C. 48 cm

This week's mantra

I’M JUST HERE FOR THE SAVASANA.

Last week we talked about trusting in rest. This week I want to offer on easy example of how you can practice this: Stay for savasana. I used to be one of those people who skipped out on savasana at the end of a yoga class. At the first sign of “come to rest on your back” (AKA lay-down-in-themiddle-of-the-day-and-do-nothing-for-10-minutes) I was dashing out the door. Had thangs to do! It took me years to get comfortable with resting at the end of a class, much less in my day to day life. And now? I never miss a savasana. Now, I’m really JUST HERE for the savasana. Asanas (yogic postures) allow us to clear blockages and move and direct energy in our bodies. Savasana allows us to integrate that work. As you might know, savasana translates to corpse pose. I really take that translation to heart.

2. King Henry VIII had a “Groom of the Stool”, whose job was to monitor and assist in the King’s what? A. Footrest B. Mushroom garden C. Bowel movements 3. The word “orange” was first used to describe the colour, not the fruit. True or false? 4. How old is the Queen? A. 93 B. 95 C. 97 5. At the 1908 Olympics, the Russians showed up 12 days late because they were using the Julian calendar instead of the Gregorian calendar. True or false? 6. China owns nearly all of the pandas in the world, even the ones you see at zoos. They rent them out making them how much annually? A. $500, 000 B. $1, 000, 000 C. $1, 500, 000

Savasana lets us practice the ultimate rest (dying). And the beauty of that small symbolic death on our mats is the renewed energy and appreciation for life that comes after. So that when we roll over and rise up out of savasana, we rise up as a transformed version of ourselves. A new incarnation. A fresh start.

7. Lord Byron allegedly kept what kind of pet in his dorm room while studying at Cambridge University? A. Macaw B. Goose C. Bear

Sinking into savasana after moving through asana trains us in this essential rhythm of output and rest. And this practice helps us master the art of making graceful transitions in our lives off the mat.

8. Where was President Richard Nixon when he infamously proclaimed, “I am not a crook.”? A. Parliment B. Disneyland C. A brothel

So next time you spend savasana running through your grocery list or rehearsing a future conversation, or otherwise resisting the chance to rest, STOP + DROP IN. Use this time to be still and quiet. And when savasana comes to an end, leave what no longer serves you on the mat. Shed a layer. Rise up as a lighter version of you. That’s the power of a rest used well.

9. Angel Falls in Venezuela is the highest uninterrupted waterfall in the world, how high is it? A. 679 mtrs B. 979 mtrs C. 1079 mtrs 10. The Cookie Monster has a real name. What is it? A. Dave B. Jim C. Sid

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

A SUN/NEPTUNE SQUARE IS BUILDING

(exact on Sunday) and things are not as they seem. The Sun in Sagittarius is extremely enthusiastic, optimistic and aspiring. Inspired by Neptune’s sensitive and creative approach, together they are able to build castles in the sky without putting much emphasis on realistic and strong foundations. Therefore even though it is the perfect weekend for a romantic getaway or for immersing yourself into an artistic endeavour, you may feel dissatisfied and disappointed with the results you get. One problem might be that your ideals are far too high and actually unattainable. On Sunday evening Mercury, the messenger, moves into the Archer’s territory where he resides for about five weeks. After a long, deep and hopefully transformative time in Scorpio he now gains momentum and finds it much easier to open up to new possibilities. Monday may offer another opportunity to share what you feel in your heart, either with another person or by your artful creations, courtesy of a Venus/Neptune sextile. Jupiter just moved into the down-toearth Capricorn camp where Pluto, Saturn and Venus already reside, and forms a square to Chiron in Aries. The raw truth about something that you are personally invested in might turn out to be quite disillusioning and it can hurt. Tuesday offers a chance to have a passionate, straight-to-the-point and also very healing conversation with someone dear to your heart. Venus has been edging closer to Saturn for a few days (exact on Wednesday) and nudges everyone to take full responsibility for their actions and reactions. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

The World Tarot card appeals to your astute sense of adventure and pioneering. You treasure your individual freedom above all and don’t tolerate being told what to do. Yet from deep inside you feel inspired to use your gifts and talents to make this world a better place. This can be a hugely satisfying mission.

h TAURUS

The 2 of Disks symbolises changeable and rather fluid times, that have to be juggled with great care and skill. This is not necessarily easy for the Bull who prefers things to be stable and predictable. Unless you have been uncomfortable with the status quo you might resent the fact that change is the only constant…

i GEMINI

The 4 of Wands heralds a time for completions and new beginnings. You may be eager and excited about new possibilities. Take a moment to contemplate the past, present and future to acknowledge how far you have come. This helps you to recognise and acknowledge the foundations of your success, which you are now building on.

j CANCER

The Priestess Tarot card indicates your need to withdraw from social involvement and spend time in nourishing nature. As you recharge your batteries and reconnect with yourself you find your natural inner guidance. This is a time to allow yourself to feel more, and think or do less.

BY GISELA

k LEO

c SAGITTARIUS

l VIRGO

d CAPRICORN

The Emperor Tarot card’s theme is leadership and personal empowerment. You get there by creating order in all your affairs, so that things are more predictable, and by sticking to a well-formed, strategic plan. You excel when you factor in the human condition and how you can be of service to the greater whole.

The Strength Tarot card assists you to tame the wild beast of the inner critic and to let loose a part of you that has been confined for too long. Allow yourself to be playful and passionate. Take a few risks and you’ll be rewarded with a new sense of wonder and awe about how much you love your life.

a LIBRA

The Knight of Disk indicates weariness and possibly exhaustion. Maybe you have been overextending yourself and working too hard for too long, or the rewards for your labour are not as forthcoming as you expected. Now it is time to work smarter, rather than harder and to reconnect with your bigger perspective.

b SCORPIO

The 4 of Swords tells a tale of mental pressure, resulting in rising stress levels or feeling overwhelmed. Whatever bugs you, take some time off from your preoccupations, step back, retreat into your private space and find reconciliation and truce-making from within. Then what you can offer to others entices a ‘yes’ response much easier than a ‘no’!

The 7 of Disks could be symbolised as a big question mark. It is time to take stock, assess your current situation and ponder alternatives. Even if you come to the conclusion that you have to change your current circumstances, you don’t necessarily have to label what is ending as failure. Just accept it as a good lesson learnt.

The Queen of Cups is not afraid to show her tenderness; she is always guided by the heart, and her intuition works in a refined and holistic way. With her by your side you can still be as efficient and practical as usual, but you also stay connected to your rich, inner world. Deep communication with nature makes you smile!

e AQUARIUS

With the 9 of Wands drawn you are ready to stand up and be counted! You find great emotional and physical strength to deal with changing circumstances and moving goal-posts. How can you stay flexible and focused at the same time? You need a combination of perseverance, staying in the moment and a bird’s-eye vision from high above.

f PISCES

The 10 of Disks holds enormous spiritual wisdom that provides inner and outer riches. It assists you to translate your insights into the power of manifestation. Whether you long for more money, possessions, health or love, it all starts with the feeling of (unconditional) worthiness. This is the foundation you need to build upon.

I keep getting banned on Instagram. For breastfeeding. I don’t get it, there are topless blokes errrrrrwhere. What’s the diff? These beauties give life. The other grows hairs, sometimes. Got me thinking, is there a purpose to the male nipple? - Chest Consensus

DEAR CHEST CONSENSUS, You mean apart from being an erogenous zone? Word on the street is that 52% of men get turned on in this region, my personal research shows slightly higher stats in The Shire. Fun fact! Everyone starts out developing breasts as a female in their early development in the womb until the ‘ol Y chromosome kicks in to distinguish a fetus as male, but the nipples have already secured their place, and the body don’t take refunds for change of mind (yet). Wait, so everyone technically started as female? But back to censorship. It affects everybody. When social media tells us what we can do with our bodies, as well as what kind of art we can look at or what kind of books we can read or what kind of podcasts we can listen to, according to their laws and curation, we become just another product.

DEAR KEENWA, Went on a date recently with a rad bird, it went epically well. Drinks, dinner, dance, and that anticipatory moment at the end where we made out. Except... she closed her eyes. The whole time. Is it too needy wanting deep eye connection on a first date, or were they just not into me? - Eyes Wide Shut

DEAR EYES WIDE SHUT, It used to be thought that people closed their eyes while sharing a kiss because their vision could not focus on something as close up as the other person’s face. But scientists have now rejected that theory, and discovered that the brain is unable to cope with the combination of the visual data and the tactile sensation of kissing. Bit like sneezing and farting simultaneously. Those scientists have obvs never been to a five day Byron tantra retreat which is a bit like Christmas for your neurochemistry - enough eye gazing to completely erase any damned childhood, and fill your oxytocin stockings for a whole year. If you’ve been nice, that is.

This week's recommendation

ALBUM TITLE: Everyday Life – a double album ARTIST: Coldplay RELEASED: November 2019 GENRE: Rock, Eclectic BIO: Since forming in London in ’96 Coldplay have rejected commercial brand sponsorship of their music (exception of iTunes), become activists and donated profits to charities. Just like us their new 2 part album starts with Sunrise and ends with Sunset.

WHAT TO EXPECT: An opening track fit for a Bond

soundtrack, then the music flames and morphs with spiritual overtones, voiceovers, kids singing, birdsong, white noise EFX, choirs, busking strums, poetry, a French singer, a Chopin-like piano piece. And it’s released on cassette (along with the usual formats).

WHAT WE LIKE: The masterful growling, jazzy 5.40 long

Arabesque music is a weapon to unite us, to remind us we are all the same blood. On Guns the idiocy of guns is vented while the poppy sing-along Orphans and Eko take us to familiar territory. If Dulux used the album to name paint colours then the mood board would include Bushfire Sunset, Impeachment Red, Choral White to Coldplay Yellow or Bluenote Jazz. On ‫مدآ ینب‬, the Persian poem of the same name translated as Bani Adam, once quoted by President Obama to wish Iranians a happy new year, takes piano and spoken word to a spellbinding effect. The variety may seem far from the routine of everyday life, the unexpected is here. It’s sky-high and ambitious, yet grounded. Irony aside, Everyday Life is uplifting and uniting making it most worthy.

STANDOUT TRACKS: BrokEn, Arabesque, Champion of the World.

PERFECT FOR: During, before and after the sunrise, and sunset. Thinking global, acting local.

LISTEN IN IF YOU LIKE: Bastille, Sam Fender, Radiohead, Sting. Recommended by Dan McGill.

BOOKS FOR Y

This week's review

TITLE: Fleishman is in trouble AUTHOR: Taffy Brodesser-Akner NUMBER OF PAGES: 384 EST. READ TIME: 8 hours 27 minutes PRICE: $16.00 WHAT'S IT ABOUT? Toby Fleishman is 41, recently

divorced and the father of two kids. As he tries to throw himself back into New York’s dating scene he begins to realise that he’s been suffering in silence for too long. Here, he is exposed to a new generation of available women as he scrolls through his many dating apps. But when his ex wife , Rachel, disappears after a weekend yoga retreat it is Toby who is left with the kids. Where has Rachel gone? And why isn’t she answering her phone?

WHO IT'S FOR: Everyone. It is a hilarious insight into modern relationships.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Fleishman Is In Trouble totally bamboozled me in the best way possible. By the last few chapters I was left gasping as the author dared me to question everything I thought I knew about the book.

NOTABLE QUOTE: "That was what I knew for sure, that this was the only way to get someone to listen to a woman—to tell her story through a man; Trojan horse yourself into a man, and people would give a shit about you."

Phil Daly ENTREPRENEURSHIP FACILITATOR - @BUILDGROWRUN

TELL US WHERE YOU’RE FROM AND HOW YOU ENDED UP IN BYRON. I grew up in Beverly Hills, in the southern suburbs of Sydney, went to uni in Bathurst, then back to Sydney for another 23 years. I came to Byron in 2001 and now I live in Lennox Head. YOU ARE AN ENTREPRENEURSHIP FACILITATOR – WHAT DOES THAT MEAN, AND WHAT’S THE CONNECTION WITH SOURDOUGH AND BREADMAKING? Ten years ago I joined a group of business owners to support and mentor budding entrepreneurs and local small businesses – helping them to turn their good ideas into good businesses. The group met regularly at Harvest Bakery, and as we discussed business culture, sourdough bread was always baking in the background. So “sourdough” seemed to fit nicely with what we were doing. Today the Sourdough Business Pathways Group has over 50 volunteer mentors that support small businesses in the region - hopefully helping them to grow their businesses, reduce risks and maximise their rewards. YOU HOST “BYRON BUSINESS” ON THE LOCAL BAY FM – WHAT’S THE FORMAT OF THE SHOW? It started as a one-hour radio show to inform and educate people about running a small business. Now we’ve added “People & Lifestyle”, and it’s a two-hour format with news, views, interviews, and music that I like. Hopefully my listeners have similar taste in music to me! Tune in – Tuesdays 11 am. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT BYRON, WHAT WOULD IT BE? The trouble with living in a great place, is everyone wants to visit! So, traffic is a problem for us all, and we are all part of the problem! COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE – "I LOVE... my partner, Ingrid" IF YOU WENT TO A FANCY-DRESS PARTY, WHO WOULD YOU GO AS, AND WHY? Robin Hood - robbed the rich and gave to the poor. BYRON IS RENOWNED FOR ITS WILD BRUSH TURKEYS - HAVE YOU EVER ENCOUNTERED ONE? Yes, I have coached a few over the years!
