TWENTY-TWENTY; 2020, TWO THOUSAND AND TWENTY.
Whichever way you say or write it, it has a particularly rhythmical feel. We see a new year, a new decade, a new start, a new vision for the future. In Australia, 2020 has begun with particular challenges. The drought in many parts of the land, combined with the bushfires that rage across much of our country, pose significant dangers. There will be many tragic stories, and we are hearing them every day. But there will also be many stories of bravery, heroism and generosity that will make you proud to be an Australian. Let’s not lose sight of those as we battle the elements, the hazards, the opinions, the choices and the responses. The numerous, generous individual actions are heartwarming, but any long-term solutions to drought and bushfire will require well thought out, well-funded and cooperative approaches. We usually look to governments to do this on our behalf, and there are many calls for the federal, state and local governments to do just that. But let’s not forget, governments don’t have any money of their own. All they can do is spend money they raise from all of us. When government spending is done in a hurry, based on political motivations, or with little or no oversight, vision becomes blurred. Wise, efficient and effective solutions are less likely. Smart solutions require thoughtful questions and optimum use of time. Albert Einstein put it well – “If I had an hour to solve a problem and my life depended on it, I would use the first 55 minutes determining the proper question to ask, for once I know the proper question, I could solve the problem in less than 5 minutes.” Can we trust our leaders and officials to take this approach, before rushing to solutions mode? I hope we can – I hope they do – history suggests they may not. Time will tell. I ended last year talking about water – supply, collection, demand and distribution. By the time we go to print this week, may the air have chilled, may the clouds have floated to the right places, and may precipitation be underway. Staying hydrated and chilled is good for us all…. This week's mantra
OPEN YOURSELF TO JOY WITH WILD ABANDON. It’s been just over a year since my baby brother left this earth. 2019 was the most painful year of my life by a long shot. I have hurt in ways I didn’t know I could hurt. I have reckoned with the void left by him, circling around this huge, empty space in my life for the last 395 days. Holding all this love with no where to go. I’m still dancing with the void. I am still reaching for him. And I suspect that I will do so for the rest of my life. There is no resolution. And despite all those shitty condolence cards that people make, there is no upside to grief or loss or trauma. There is no silver lining. There is just the opportunity to expand your capacity for this life by meeting the circumstances with as much courage and grace and steadiness as you can muster. There is just the learning that hope and joy are there, waiting to be reclaimed. Waiting for you to realise that they exist not despite death and loss and pain, but because of it. The hardest aspects of this human experience offer us contrast so that we might see beauty and love and goodness more clearly. Grief is now woven into my being. But hope and joy are, too. If this year has been a rough one for you, too, I’m holding you in my heart. My wish for us both is that we can continue to open ourselves to joy and gratitude and love with wild abandon. Now more than ever. Not despite the rough times, but because of them.

A Saturn/Pluto conjunction in Capricorn has been in orb throughout December and is exact on 13th of January, with Sun and Mercury joining the pair. This acts like a cosmic reset-button. It is an incredibly potent time to plant the seeds for what you wish to create way beyond 2020 and it is serious business! For many people it is the time when they go back to work after hanging out with family and friends. There is a sombre mood and we might be pushed to sacrifice some of our comfort-zone or fun for structured hard work. Things we have taken for granted might be in short supply, e.g. pristine environment, clean water and air! Pluto amplifies the contraction and disciplinary measures of Saturn and separates the bare essentials from the non-essential, while Sun and Mercury promote a prudent and rather austere outlook. Mercury, the planet for travel, commerce and communication is serious and organised in Capricorn but he does not like experiments or radical innovation, and rather sticks to the tried and true. If you have planets on 22 to 24 degrees in Capricorn, Cancer, Aries or Libra you may be in for a truly transformational experience! On the 18th of February we move into the first retrograde Mercury period of this year. Every year we are graced or challenged with three of these three-week events. The first one is in Pisces and Aquarius. It finishes on the 11th of March. All retrograde Mercury phases are an inward time and great for reconsidering and re-evaluating your direction. If you have to travel during this period allow more time for delays and complications. Be prepared for misunderstandings and try to be as precise in your communications as possible. The other two retro Mercury times are 19th of June to 12th of July (Mercury in Cancer) and 15th of October to 3rd of November (Mercury in Scorpio and Libra). Another ‘hot’ time arrives when Mars in Capricorn unites with Jupiter and Pluto (in orb from 19th of March to 27th of March). Mars is the warrior and fearless pioneering archetype. When he unites with Jupiter (exact 20th of March) he is confident, courageous and optimistic about achieving his goals. And when he lines up with Pluto (exact 23rd of March) his desire to get what he wants may become so intense that he is willing to grab with force what he feels entitled to. Again if you have planets between 21 and 25 degrees in Capricorn, Cancer, Aries or Libra, this power struggle might become a personal one. In the midst of this Saturn moves into humanitarian Aquarius. It takes him two years to traverse this section of the zodiac, with a small retro-tour back into Capricorn from July to mid-December 2020. Since Aquarius is ruled by Saturn (responsibility) and Uranus (innovation), reform and restructuring of our society has to happen, but not without great struggle. There might also be a push for controlling and restricting the internet.
6 BYRON BAZAAR
of April). This is the first of three fusions in 2020. The others are 30th of June and 13th of November. Basically Jupiter and Pluto never leave each other’s orb until late November. The changes we initiate, the new horizons we explore and the insights we have in April, must be revised in June and come to a conclusion in November. Visualise Jupiter’s enlightenment shining a bright light into the deepest underworld of your psyche. Its purpose is transformation, letting go of limitations and rebirth. Tremendous growth is possible, again especially for people who have planets in mid to late Capricorn, Cancer, Aries and Libra. From mid-May to late June Venus, the love goddess turns retrograde in Gemini. During this time you have a chance to re-consider the way you communicate and who you communicate with. You may come to reassess the value of your social interactions. Deep and meaningful conversations and less gossip or small-talk improve the quality of connection with others. Time alone might become precious and highly desirable as a relaxing refuge. From mid-September until mid-November it’s Mars’ turn to retrograde. In Aries he is impatient, straightforward and not very interested in revising or reconsidering anything. Therefore he can get quite irritable and explosive during this time. Avoid starting a new project, making big decisions or moving house, and be prepared for things to take much longer than expected. Don’t give up, but you may have to muster a lot of patience and flexibility, in particular if your Mars is in a fire sign (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius). Just two days before Mars turns direct again the third Jupiter/Pluto fusion occurs on Friday 13th of November. Tensions have been running high for a while now and this conjunction brings integration and resolution. A vision is emerging of how to build new structures, personally and globally, which serve the whole of the planet, not just some individuals. And again if you have planets near 22 degrees of Capricorn, Cancer, Aries or Libra, your life may be eclipsed by issues concerning money, power, sexuality and/or trouble with authorities. Luckily the road to success is clearing, with Mars gaining momentum. The last huge event in 2020 is the Jupiter/Saturn conjunction (exact 22nd of December). By then they have been in very close proximity for about five weeks in the later degrees of Capricorn. Not until they both slip into Aquarius do they actually fuse totally. It looks as if the pair put up huge resistance to change and innovation until finally they can no longer deny that the time for reform has come. Actually during their conjunction, which has a ripple effect way into January 2021, a window of opportunity opens that may facilitate personal breakthrough. New cooperative ventures that serve humanity as a whole might be born. Wishing you a happy, healthy and fulfilling 2020!
This week's recommendation
ALBUM TITLE: Favourite Holiday Vol. 1 ARTIST: Summer Salt RELEASED: December 2019 GENRE: They've categorised themselves as 'Coral Reef Rock'. We think that means a mix of retro blues, pop and rock from the 60's. Think, The Beach Boys.
BIO: Summer Salt is a four piece boy band from Austin. It all started as high school sweethearts coming together to play music. Elements of this beginning remain in their music. Elements of love, innocence and simplicity.
WHAT TO EXPECT: An album that hugs you into a bubble
of dreamy, holiday love. You know those long summer days that burn themselves into your memory? The days where the phone's out of reception, the cicadas sound as you walk down to the beach, sunlight comes dappled through swaying pandanas palms and the ocean is one big aqua landscape? Imagine if those memories could be turned into music. That's what this album sounds like.
WHAT WE LIKE: As the name implies, this release is
dedicated to different holidays. It's like looking back over your year, picking out the highlights and collecting all those warm, fuzzy feelings. Of course, this can also slur into a gentle nostalgic feeling. Another Piece of The Cake is about birthdays, Favourite Holiday about Halloween and Abominable Snowman incorporates the sound of bells, and sings about snow, hinting at a Texan Christmas. All these songs share similarities of a soft, high pitched lead singer, harmonies that sound like they're straight out of the 60's and that wobbly, electric guitar.
STANDOUT TRACKS: My lucky egg, Abominable Snowman PERFECT FOR: A sleepy drive back from the beach when
the sunlight turns golden through an afternoon salt haze, making dinner with a warm breeze drifting through the kitchen.
LISTEN IN IF YOU LIKE: The Beach Boys, SadGirl, Dreamgirl. Recommended by Delphi O'Heart.

This week's review
TITLE: Fair Play AUTHOR: Eve Rodsky NUMBER OF PAGES: 352 EST. READ TIME: 4 hours 35 minutes PRICE: $32.99 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Organisational expert Eve Rodsky
rallied her friends to each create a ‘Sh*t I do’ list, a list outlining the unpaid domestic work they do in a month that cost them time. What she discovered was that the invisible work that men and women did, in general, was not equal in the home. This was when she invented Fair Play, an instruction manual and game for those who crave a little more balance in responsibilities. WHO IT'S FOR: I would say that the target audience of Fair Play is most definitely women and appeals to their frustrations at home and in their professional lives. WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: I have some hesitations with this book. There were some tools I took away that helped me find a better way to communicate regarding mundane domestic tasks in our home but I’m not sure that Eve Rodsky is as inclusive as I’d like her to be. I found her tone to be condescending at times. However, I do think it was a worthwhile read in highlighting the disparity in the amount of ‘invisible tasks’ men and women are completing. NOTABLE QUOTES: “Like a woman obsessed, this lightning moment led me to embark on a quest to create a system for domestic rebalance. It began with a list called ‘Sh*t I Do’. From grocery lists and Costco runs to replacing lightbulbs and laundry detergent to making sure the bathroom has at least one backup roll of toilet paper, I began writing down every single thing I did day to day with a quantifiable time component. Tallying every time sucking detail was no small feat. For any woman who’s ever considered sitting down to enumerate every single one of her domestic responsibilities but hasn't, let me say: I get it.” Review written by Jessie Hilton @jessieahilton

DEAR KEENWA, School holidays. Nooooooooo. Six weeks total! I repeat, six weeks. Send help. Yesterday. - Mamawhelmed
DEAR MAMAWHELMED, Once upon a time there was a way of living where there were aunts and grannies galore to occupy and mentor our young, and romance and capitalism was secondary to planetary alignment. I'm game to try and take us back there if you are. I imagine it goes something like this: gather up your brood for the obligatory morning coffee stop. Choose carefully this morning. Make sure it has a grassed area where lots of large families may also be gathering, and snacks are sold. Tell the kids you'll deliver their organic croissants to them at the play area when your order is ready. But simply grab your coffee, and get in the car. Drive away with the windows down, and Bay FM loud, hopeful that someone in the village will take over. Return at a reasonable hour in the early evening.
DEAR KEENWA, My older neighbour is a nature hater, chopping down every beautiful plant that ever grows anywhere near his fence. I’ve seen him spraying pesticides on geckos! He tries to ring-bark my baby Bangalow palms with his whipper snipper. He came into my garden while I was at work, and sprayed all the berries on my tree, killing everything in its vicinity. Bats feed on them during this drought! My garden did have green tree frogs and stunning birds before HIM. I'm mortified and angry at him, but I’m a peaceful soul, and I don’t like confrontations. Any ideas? - Garden Lover

DEAR GARDEN LOVER, Imagine if Greta Thunberg sat at home with peace in her heart and tail between her legs? These are desperate times that won't see change if we make politeness our priority. You could always call upon your spiritual allies sister, ask those animals that he is killing regularly to come back and haunt him with an eco message.
