AN IMPORTANT SOCIAL EVENT COMPLETELY SLIPPED UNDER MY radar in early January, when the Macquarie Dictionary word or phrase of the year was announced. In case you missed it too, the vote for the most widely used unique term for 2019 was “robodebt”- which is defined as a debt owed to the government by a welfare recipient, arising from an overpayment of benefits, that is automatically chased up by the ATO’s computer.
Unlike 2018, when “MeToo” had been the runaway winner, 2019 was not so cut and dry. There were honorable mentions given to quite a few new and unique words and terminologies: “anecdata” – information which is presented as if it were based on systematic research, but is actually based on personal observation or experience. “big minutes” – a period of time spent by a player on the field or court, during which they maximise their impact, having a substantial effect on the game. “cleanskin” – someone without any tattoos. “flight shaming” – criticism or ridicule directed at someone travelling by air because of the carbon emissions and consequent environmental damage produced by such travel. “healthwashing” – the marketing practice of presenting a food brand or product as being more nutritious or wholesome than it actually is, usually by ignoring or understating the less healthy aspects of the product. This must have been a tough year for the judging panel – like an all dancing, all miming, all feathered Eurovision contest; or a really intense, full flavored, Master Chef sauce-off. If 2020 is to become a scrabble classic and dictionary year to remember, we should really start thinking about the entries now. Here is my mid-year list, to begin the election campaign and pre-polling process: “COVIDSafe” – is an obvious one, and may end up being more than just a government App, but signify a whole new way of living and relating to one-another post 2020; “ISOlatte” – the coffee we make and drink at home; “2SquareDance” – the distance we now keep apart when on the dancefloor; “HomeWork” – no longer just an after-school activity, but a permanent home-office intrusion; “DoonaDebt” – where we hide from all the government expenditure until the cleaner-upperers come along; “Infostructure” – the infrastructure you build when you have run out of money to build anything concrete, so you just create an ongoing dialogue or national conversation. This would be like planning a series of meetings to discuss the road building spending priorities in The Shire – as opposed to filling the potholes! If rampant government spending and electioneering end up leaving us, ipso facto, with ballooning debt, all we can do is follow the regular routine – chill out, wrap ourselves in a doonadebt blanket and sip on a homemade isolatte.

roll band on the planet, but they surely must be the most experienced! The Rolling Stones formed in 1962, and the original line-up included Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts. Ronnie Wood joined in 1975 and the group have released 30 studio albums, 23 live albums and numerous compilations. Living in a Ghost Town is their first original material since 2012. WHAT TO EXPECT: This single rocketed to #1 on the iTunes charts within days of release. Thoughtful lyrics, Mick at his gravelly best, and guitars, drums, horns and keyboards blending in a reggae beat. Craig Jenkins of Vulture Records described it well – “this track lands in the sweet spot between wistful boomer nostalgia and tacit acknowledgment that the sands of time have shifted”. WHAT WE LIKE: These musos know how to put together a hit, adding lyrics that are spot on for the times – Once this place was humming, And the air was full of drumming The sound of cymbals crashing, Glasses were all smashing Trumpets were all screaming, Saxophones were blaring Nobody was caring if it's day or night STANDOUT TRACK: The song had been written last year as part of a new studio album, but Jagger and Richards thought that with some adjusted lyrics, it was perfectly suited to an early release. Darryl Jones plays bass guitar, as he has done in support for many years, and Matt Clifford adds keyboards, horns and sax, for a full rounded sound. PERFECT FOR: This is not a happy, dance track or a perfect lament, but it may well become an anthem for life during the coronavirus pandemic.
