All that eating – maybe you just want a fresh pint? Stone & Wood are always trialling beers and now that their Brewery in Byron Bay is open again, it might be time to try something new. “Counter Culture #7” - a hazy DIPA brewed with the freshest galaxy hops from Tasmania, pale malts, New England ale yeast and some revved up tropical flavours – all with a kick, at 7.6% ABV. Detailed previews - stoneandwood. com.au/byron-brewery/ Live music – we’re all hanging out for the day, right! The Beachy is doing its bit – Thurs 18th Two Moons @ 7:00pm; Friday Scott Day Vee @ 3:00pm / Pink Zinc Trio 7:30pm; Saturday Fernando Aregones @ 1:00pm / Matt Hanley 4:30pm / The Dirty Channel 8:00pm; Sunday Dan Clark Solo @ 1:00pm. ON SUNDAY 21ST JUNE WE WILL EXPERIENCE OUR SHORTEST DAY
of the year – the winter solstice. Expect only 9 hours 56 min 47 sec of daylight here in the southern lands (hopefully with plenty of sunlight too!). Pagans in the northern hemisphere mark this event in their winter calendar as the time of Yule, which co-incidentally occurs at almost the same time as Christianity’s important Christmas services and Santa’s global trek. Over time, these celebrations have merged in many ways, and now it’s hard to distinguish which traditions belong to which festival. Is eggnog a Yule-time tradition, a Christmas holidays invention, or simply something for Dad to wash down the reindeer’s carrots? I like the idea of a second Christmas in June, in the middle of our Aussie winter. A replacement festivity may be especially important this year, with so many other parties cancelled or postponed - so I have come up with a 2020’s Yule-time celebratory checklist. 1.
2. 3.
4.
5.
6.
Gifting is common to all these traditions. I suggest adding some worthy charities to your normal list for family and friends, and don’t forget the Byron Bazaar PO Box 880. Feasting is a must, accompanied by your favourite alcoholic beverage or two - or a fun mocktail replacement if that’s your thing. An open fire is important, so clear out the fireplace, Coonara or outdoor fire pit. Burn the root of a hardwood tree - a mallee root would be ideal, or any type of Eucalyptus. The Yule log should be burned until nothing but a small piece remains, which is then saved and kept as next year’s fire starter. Mistletoe over the doorway is always good for stealing a kiss. Apparently the bright red berries represent fertility – a symbol of the blood of a woman’s moon cycle. The prickly leaves might be a warning sign too. Finish off the evening with a cup of herbal eggnog, for a little winter calm and an extra immunity boost – egg, milk, nutmeg, sugar and rum, mixed with your preferred medicinal herbs for taste (elderflower, echinacea, lemon balm, lavender or chamomile). I’m not suggesting this is a COVID remedy, just a nice pick-you-up. Make a big batch, as the alcohol is practical, safe and tasty. Finally, don’t forget to make time on the 21st to look up and take note of the sun, the moon and the stars. A Solstice is a special event on the solar calendar, and the heavens are often up to all sorts of mischievous things. (See what Gisela’s Tarot forecast suggests in your personalized star chart).
And that’s it – Yule in the Antipodes. Relax, enjoy, contemplate your spring renewal, and stay chilled. Tony Byron Bazaar

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST
TIME FOR ANOTHER THREE WEEKS MERCURY
retrograde detour, starting on Friday! Mercury, the planet for communication and travel, moves backwards through Cancer which is generally concerned about family, home, safety and attachment. Is this a cosmic hint to stay at home, again? With five planets (Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto) in retro motion this is definitely not a good week to make big decisions, in particular about travel! Expect delay, detours and misunderstandings! The second Jupiter/ Pluto conjunction is building up from now until the end of the month (exact 30/6). The first conjunction of the pair was in early April and the third and last one will be in mid-November. Basically Jupiter and Pluto never leave each other’s orb until late November. Right now is the time to revise and reconsider all the changes that the pandemic has forced upon us, and how to move on from here. A final assessment of these and other questions will happen in November. Jupiter as a collective force, supplies the prevailing philosophy and moral codes that underpin our culture or ‘Zeitgeist’ but he is also on a quest to restore integrity and fairness. Pluto symbolises power, money and psychology, and in Capricorn all the power lies in the hands of established corporations and governments. On Friday and Saturday Mars in Pisces, the sign for the visionary, forms an amicable sextile to Jupiter and Pluto; what a great opportunity to gain a new perspective! On Sunday morning the Sun moves into Cancer and marks the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere, which is the shortest day and the longest night of the year. Sunday’s New Moon in Cancer brings a solar eclipse which is not visible here in northern NSW. With Sun, Moon and Mercury retrograde in Cancer the emotional tide can reach extreme heights! So no matter what goes on around you, feel your feelings before you react or retreat into your own personal safety zone, and try to avoid making others responsible for your moodswings. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

l VIRGO
The 7 of Swords symbolises mental reactivity and negative thinking that makes it difficult to truly assess your reality. You might think this is someone else’s fault and if only they would change, your life would be better. However, the true question is, what can you do to transform your circumstances?
The Knight of Wands is confident and daring; he brings change, sweeps out the cobwebs and sets you on a new course. With him by your side you are ready for a great leap forward and without doubt, you’ll land exactly where you want to be. Go for it!
i GEMINI
With the 5 of Discs drawn and Venus still retrograde in your sign, you might feel quite low in energy. Issues about money or relationships may drag you way back into unresolved, emotional hang-ups of the past that compound the present. Know your triggers and stay in the present as much as possible.
j CANCER
The Ace of Swords brings the great gift of mental clarity and during this New Moon time in your sign you are extraordinarily perceptive. This is your time to ‘press the cosmic reset button’ and to integrate your latest insights into your everyday experience, using a balanced approach of intellect, instincts and feelings.
With the 5 of Wands drawn you may feel as if you are driving a car with one foot on the accelerator and one foot on the brakes at the same time! This is definitely not a good feeling and you may compound the problem with your irritation. Find a way to let of steam and know that things will change soon…
The 4 of Swords points out that if you make peace within, outer peace will follow. In particular during situations that are mentally overwhelming, you need to step back, take time out, remove yourself from the challenge, even if it is only for a few minutes, and find your inner equilibrium before you try to reconcile with others.
a LIBRA
The Ace of Disks gifts you with great manifestation powers this week. Ask yourself what you want most in life and what success would look like right now. As you align your intentions and visualisations, right action follows naturally if you apply a down-to-earth, practical approach.
b SCORPIO
The 8 of Cups symbolises emotional depletion or burnout. Your usual strategy of using hard work as therapy to supress feeling too much may not work right now because you have been pushing yourself too hard for too long. You may have to cut your losses and walk away from a draining situation.
c SAGITTARIUS
The 2 of Cups symbolises loving connection and love in action. Accepting your own shadow and imperfections is the first step to becoming more inclusive and nonjudgemental with a lover, friend or family member. If they have a trait that is really bugging you, ask yourself where you can recognise exactly that trait within yourself, and embrace it with loving kindness.
d CAPRICORN
With the 9 of Wands drawn you surely are having a busy week. Some good news or an opportunity is coming your way. It all depends on your clear communication and decisive action, so strike while the iron is hot, but only after you receive all the information you need.
e AQUARIUS
The 10 of Disks promises inner and outer riches. Success comes easier if you believe that you deserve it. Therefore align your actions with your ethics, as well as the principles of prosperity and abundance. This way you can create solid foundations and enjoy long-lasting financial and business success.
f PISCES
With Mars and Neptune in your sign and the 4 of Wands drawn, this is the time to put the finishing touches on an important (creative) project. Set yourself a deadline, focus on knowing when you’re done, and don’t go back for more, rather get excited about your next endeavour…

DEAR KEENWA,
I've been experiencing a bit of social anxiety about being out in town. To think that I used to be one of those six minute Mullum huggers, pre-isolation... But a lot has changed for me, there's a lot of outstanding questions I'm struggling with. Like, who wears active wear in public? That shit is for home. And do pub dishwashers operate at 60 degrees and above? How do we know all that bacteria is off the beer glasses, with or without a visible lipstick stain? What does the new world look like? - Existential Energy
DEAR EXISTENTIAL ENERGY,
You're totally right, returning to how things were is impossible. We are living in an incredible period in history where, the way we look at love, money-making, healthcare, parenting and sourdough is all up in the air. Hopefully after all that inner time and connection, the new world will in fact be created by more feminine heart based leadership, and less capitalist, and more erotic decision-making - don't tell me there was no nude sun baking going down at your place.
DEAR KEENWA,
I've rather enjoyed the forced celibacy that the isolation period has brought me. I have been chatting online to women, and was getting along so well with one that I opened up about my positive herpes status. She told me it was a deal breaker for her, then hung up on me, and has since unmatched us. I'd like to suggest an STD profile option on dating sites ,so I dont waste my time anymore on judgmental folk. Whether you have the clap, the clam or the pox, I think we should be loud and proud and responsible about it. - Sexualised Stigma
DEAR SEXUALISED STIGMA,
Oh, yes I sure would like to see that option. But I think the real question burning everyone's lips (pardon the pun) is, have we managed as a community to reduce the exceptionally high rate of STD's in The Shire? With a deadly combo of bacteria replicating humidity, high rate of travelling love affairs being a tourist town, and the vast majority of us still living like it’s still 1969, lets hope the love virus pandemic belongs to life before Covid.

This week's review
TITLE: Leonardo da Vinci AUTHOR: Walter Isaacson NUMBER OF PAGES: 524 READING TIME: 15 hours 55 minutes PRICE: $45.99 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Walter Isaacson is the author and
biographer of the acclaimed bestsellers Steve Jobs, Einstein, and Benjamin Franklin. In this book he brings one of history's most creative geniuses to life – a true "Renaissance Man". Based on over 7,000 pages of Leonardo’s personal notebooks, Isaacson is able to show the passion, the inquisitive mind and the creative drive that informed and inspired him, from his birth in Tuscany in 1452, to his travels throughout Renaissance Italy, and to the remarkable compendium of complete and incomplete works at his death in 1519. Apart from his artistic genius, Leonardo was unique in many ways - illegitimate, gay, vegetarian, self-educated, left-handed – and always way ahead of his time.
WHO IT'S FOR: Very few humans will ever reach his lofty heights, but the way Leonardo questioned, studied, analysed and experimented is something we could all learn from. The most mystical, subtle and memorable smile in history was no accident. Leonardo was still working on the Mona Lisa until his death – 16 years after that first brushstroke. WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: This book needs to be viewed
as much as read. By using the notebooks as the primary source material, Isaacson is able to reproduce drafts, notes, doodles, diagrams and sketches, as well as the finished works of art. “The Last Supper” and the “Mona Lisa” are perhaps the two most famous paintings in history, and the stories behind them are no less fascinating. Leonardo's obsession with inventions like flying machines, submarines, catapults and other sophisticated weaponry are the stuff of genius and legend.
NOTABLE QUOTES: “His analysis of nature informed his art, which informed his analysis of nature.” BYRON BAZAAR

ALBUM TITLE: Flow ARTIST: Bobby Alu RELEASED: October 2019 GENRE: Roots / Reggae / Blues BIO: With Polynesian roots, Byron Bay singer, uke
strummer and mind blowing drummer Bobby Alu creates smile inducing grooves for the masses. There’s a strong energy in Alu’s mastery of traditional Samoan log drums, and a vitality to his songwriting that nods to world, roots and pop intelligence. Bobby's 3rd studio album is true to his style and another testament to his feel good vibes.
BOOKING DEADLINE - MIDNIGHT MONDAY - PUBLISHED THURSDAY
To book call 0487 003 765 or email hello@byronbazaar.com
WHAT TO EXPECT: All the songs on Flow are about the
same thing. They're about when times are good, and when times are bad. When the flow is good or bad. Think of it as a musical journey expressing the varied emotions of our day to day lives, both the highs and the lows, and of course, the feeling of the flow.
WHAT WE LIKE: After the brief intro of Afi, we are straight into the smooth grooves of Fire. Other Side follows with homage to that classic 'grass is greener' attitude. Finally is his song about getting old, In a society that gears us to promote being young, Bobby shows us perhaps being old is way cooler. Expect goosebumps with the somber vibes of Dust, really highlighting his ability to portray mood through music. Move will have you bouncing once again with its funky uke, and beat perfect drum lines. The album closes out with Tomorrow with Bobby saying, 'I need to be alone right now' and that it's ok to be that way for growth. STANDOUT TRACKS: Fire, Dust, Move and Tomorrow. PERFECT FOR: Backing track to exploring your own
emotions, ups and downs. Shaking your hips while cooking dinner, or having a beer in a hammock on a nice sunny day.
LISTEN IN IF YOU LIKE: Xavier Rudd, Ben Harper, Katchafire.
