THIS IS A WEEK OF ANNIVERSARIES IN OUR HOUSEHOLD – ONE

year since we took over the Byron Bazaar, two years since we got married, and four years since I moved north from sunny Melbourne! You don’t want to muck up the wedding anniversary gift, not this early in the honeymoon period, so I decided to consult Professor Google for guidance. The most popular, traditional second anniversary present is something cotton. This is a step up from the first year’s paper gift, but it’s still pretty affordable. I have to say, I’m a bit gun shy after the response to my gift last year. I should have realized that a Hallmark card, no matter how pretty, large or well versed, was never going to satisfy. I do learn from past mistakes, so this year it’s time to give the basic Google suggestion a tweek. Cotton may be lovely, but surely wool is more appropriate and luxuriuous when winter-time is here. It’s still a natural fibre, very versatile, but much more practical in warming up the evening chills. And what could be more natural than sheep’s skin? No, not a pair of Ugg boots – this is where my experience and creative flair really comes to the fore. I found something friendlier, smoochier, more precious and possibly even woolier – an Irish Water Spaniel called “24 Carrot”. She is a knee-high red head (actually she has a dark, liver coloured coat), she is bred in the purple and is a former “best in show” prizewinner. “Precious”, that’s her nom de plume, is a gorgeous 6yo bitch, with a generous smile, floppy ears, great legs and a dreadlock-inspired woolly coat. I have a penchant for leggy English blondes, but an Irish redhead is just what my lovely wife has been hinting at – if I have read the signs correctly. What could make a better anniversary present than that? As I write this, Precious is sitting at my feet after a nice long walk, freshly brushed and waiting for her new Mum to arrive home. I’m quietly confident this year, but I will let you know how things pan out. I hope the three of us bond and are chilling together by the end of the weekend – and I wish that for you too. Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

FOR MOST OF THIS MONTH WE HAVE BEEN

in an intense eclipse season which lasts until the 5th of July. As always between eclipses this is the time of endings and new beginnings; often these are not events we’ve been wishing for but rather situations that we feel were forced upon us. On Friday Venus, the goddess of love turns direct in Gemini, but until the end of July she is still retracing her steps. That leaves us only with four planets in retrograde motion; Mercury (travel and communication), Jupiter (expansion, goodwill, truth and lies), Saturn (discipline and responsibility) and Pluto (power and money). What a huge time of reassessment and possible redesign of our social and economic structure. On Friday Mars, the warrior archetype, moves into his home turf Aries, where he resides for the rest of the year, due to his retrograde sojourn in September. Instantly Mars forms a beneficial sextile to Saturn which can be quite constructive, and may rein in anyone’s grandiose ambitions during the current Jupiter/Pluto conjunction (exact on Tuesday). This is the second conjunction this year; the first one was in April and the last one will be in November. Both planets are retrograde right now and this is the time to assess the fallout of the last few months and embrace the bigger picture. Imagine Jupiter’s big light shining brightly into the plutonian darkness, enlightening and transforming subconscious forces individually, in order to affect the collective destiny of humanity in a positive way. Great insights may be gained as long as we don’t permanently descend into obsession and fanaticism. On Wednesday retro Mercury unites with the Sun; he virtually disappears into the light. At the same time both Sun and Mercury form a sextile to Uranus in Taurus. This is a day to play with unusual and revolutionary ideas. However what you conjure up might not be applicable instantly, but has to stand the test of time until mid-August when Sun and Mercury meet again. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

The 4 of Swords indicates mental stress and emotional overload. With Mars in your sign until the end of this year, this is your chance to retrain your mind. Instead of being right and ready for instant action and reaction, try to relax, breathe deeply, feel your heart and then pick your battles wisely.

h TAURUS

The Hermit Tarot card nudges you to take time out and retreat into your private world. Allow yourself to let go of some of the preoccupations and distractions that keep you busy endlessly; scale them back to the bare minimum at least for one day this week, and on that day dive deeply into your inner sanctum because that’s where you find all the answers you are looking for.

i GEMINI

The Emperor Tarot card symbolises power and benevolent leadership. This week you can be a wayshower or pioneer who creates order and stability out of chaos. When you apply yourself fully you have a great capacity to inspire and model personal empowerment to friends, family and colleagues.

j CANCER

The World Tarot card inspires you to dream big and you may be in the process of building a brand-new world for yourself. Especially on Tuesday or Wednesday your ideas and visions are very expansive; don’t discredit them instantly with old limitations your mind comes up with. Let them grow, nourish them and see what happens in August…

BY GISELA

k LEO

With the 10 of Cups drawn you radiate joy and wellbeing; anyone who is lucky enough to be in your presence can feel it. This positive and enthusiastic energy infuses all aspects of your life, especially your lovelife and your creativity, and because you are open to give much, you also receive lots.

l VIRGO

c SAGITTARIUS

The 6 of Wands promises a successful week. You are confident in your dealings with others and even though you might be quite competitive, in the end your heart and will to do good triumphs. People trust you because they know that you are motivated to create winwin situations.

The Chariot Tarot card indicates a change of consciousness and a new beginning. Gone are the days of doubt and hesitation! Now you won’t let these old habits distract you from what you really want to achieve, and you find new confidence in your abilities. Magical things can happen when the mind and heart are aligned!

d CAPRICORN

a LIBRA

e AQUARIUS

The 9 of Wands represents perseverance, stamina and resilience. Most likely you feel very confident, and you know exactly how to turn a challenging situation into an opportunity for growth and insight. Your emotional strength, combined with great optimism helps you to keep up the pace and ensures great outcomes.

b SCORPIO

The Prince of Swords is on a mission and he is absolutely dedicated to achieving his goal in a hurry. With him by your side nothing can distract you; you are decisive, ambitious and on track to fulfil your intense desire to succeed. You give it all you’ve got, but will your victory bring you inner peace? Not sure yet…

The Wheel of Fortune indicates a great opportunity or even a turning point in your destiny. The chance for positive change is enormous right now. Therefore expand your outlook, gain a greater perspective and don’t let yourself be held back by habitual thoughts about lack and scarcity.

When the Death Tarot card appears you are in for a rude awakening and your plans might have to be radically altered. It may not even come as a surprise; you might have felt it coming... yet now that you’ve come to this point, you might feel quite resistent. Be aware that that only prolongs your pain…

f PISCES

The 5 of Swords indicates inner and outer conflict, and predicts a negative outcome. In the case of inner conflict, this is because your integrity or ethics are at stake; however if you are in disagreement with others, even victory turns sour quickly, because you know you are compromising yourself. Relax, this will pass quickly...

DEAR KEENWA,

I heard the cinema will be re-opening in the next week or so. Yes! Date night as we know it returns but, can we discuss protocol? If a fellow patron sneezes, must I hit the deck for cover, or run out and report it immediately? Do you think they'll pause it? Will there be popcorn sharing patrol you think? Are choc tops indeed instinct? - Flicking Happy

DEAR FLICKING HAPPY,

I have a friend who hasn't gone to a cinema in twentyfive years due to her germaphobia. She also does not touch hotel remote control buttons, and removes the polyester dooner thing, even if its wrapped in a high cotton thread count sheet. Do not get her started on public or private jacuzzis. Too much skin flakes and stranger's hair she reckons. But...when it comes to passing the ayahuasca bowl around the circle there's just no stopping her.

DEAR KEENWA,

So, fifty people in a room. Max. I'm wondering on the likelihood of meeting my twin flame with the decreased population gathering at any given time. Yet, a part of me wonders if in fact, like germs, the intensity of both the polarity in said given room, and increased desire for connection due to deprivation may increase the meeting chances. Or does this throw the stakes completely, with our Corona glasses blocking the recognition of a twin soul, or perceiving a faux twin? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. - In The Mood For Maths

DEAR IN THE MOOD FOR MATHS,

By my calculations, you've spent way too much time home alone thinking about this. But as a wise person once said, what you seek, is seeking you, regardless of numbers. On a side note though, there are certain places that'll up the population from fifty - psych wards, and prison.

This week's review

TITLE: The Man’s Book AUTHOR: Thomas Fink NUMBER OF PAGES: 202 READING TIME: 3 hours 35 minutes PRICE: $16.95 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: The sub-title says it all – “The essential

guide for the modern man”. This is a companion to Fink’s other classic, 85 Ways to Tie a Tie. As a highly qualified theoretical physicist, Fink may appear overqualified for this task, but he has managed to produce a down to earth lifestyle reference for every knowledge seeking male.

WHO IT'S FOR: As much as there may be a drive for

equality between the sexes, the facts are that there are differences – and these can require different skills and practices. This book discloses the secrets to lacing shoes - to suit the style of shoe, the strength required and the length of the lace; how to shave properly and groom a beard; why boxers may protect the family jewels better than briefs; how to mix the perfect cocktail; what is the right way to polish leather shoes. There is a whole chapter dedicated to knots – demonstrating why this is one of those life skills that you don’t need to know, until you need to know – and then it can be a matter of life and death. Card games, darts, cooking steaks, carving roasts – it’s all covered. Even what to wear - a man should look as if he had bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care and then forgotten all about them.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Designed to be an easy, back pocket reference guide for men, it will undoubtedly be of some interest to many women too.

NOTABLE QUOTES: “At a time when the sexes are

muddled and masculinity is marginalised,” The Man’s Book” unabashedly celebrates being male. Chaps, cads, blokes and bounders, rejoice.”

This week's recommendation

ALBUM TITLE: MTV Unplugged – Live at Hull City Hall ARTIST: Liam Gallagher RELEASED: June 2020 GENRE: Pop / Rock BIO: English singer / songwriter William Gallagher

is perhaps best known, along with brother Noel, as founding members of supergroup “Oasis”. He was the band’s lead singer for 18 tumultuous years from 1991 to 2009 and part of rock band Beady Eye from 2009 to 2014, before going solo in 2017. Much to their disgust, Oasis was originally compared to the Beatles in musical style and looks. Their bad boy ways made sure this comparison was fleeting, but Liam’s musicianship is still original enough to stand alone.

WHAT TO EXPECT: This live concert recording was made

in August 2019. Supporting Liam’s distinctive voice is the 24-piece Urban Soul Orchestra and Oasis guitarist Paul Arthurs. Liam is remarkably laid back in this 10-song collection of solo hits and group classics. The customary snarl is still there, but this is a warm performance and provides another insight into his often mournful and unifying lyrics.

WHAT WE LIKE: This album comes alive most

when Liam covers Oasis classics like Champagne Supernova, and the piano-driven Some Might Say. The songs chosen are well suited to a stripped back, live performance – particularly the versions of Once, a ballad about life and it’s relentless pursuit of us all, and the tender tribute to Liam’s daughter Molly in Now That I Found You. The orchestral arrangements throughout, generous support of gospel inspired backing vocals and well-placed acoustic guitars provide some continuity as well as a fresh approach.

STANDOUT TRACKS: Champagne Supernova, Sad Song, Stand By Me.

PERFECT FOR: Despite the orchestral feel, this still

needs volume and attitude – so Saturday night rather than Sunday morning.
