Around Town This Week

Looking for inspiration for your next adventure? This week brings buckets of it in the form of the Banff Mountain Film Festival, which comes to Byron for the first time ever on Friday from 7pm at Byron Theatre. Presented by World Expeditions, this screening of the best short mountain adventure films from the annual Canadian film fest will have you planning your next trip before the credits roll. On Saturday, the party starters from Coco Republic are back with their biggest bash yet, the Coco Republic FSTVL. The fun kicks off at Byron Brewery from 1pm, with DJs hitting the decks from 4:30pm, and the doors to the ‘rave cave’ opening from 7pm. Get in before 5pm to dodge the $10 entry fee.

POSTCARD TAROT READINGS

If you can’t be bothered cooking on Sunday night, Three Blue Ducks in collaboration with Stone & Wood and JR’s Smokehouse will be putting on a threecourse feast in support of the Mullumbimby & District Community Centre from 5pm. Fifty-five bucks gets you the ultimate barbecue dinner, a beer on arrival, and live tunes by the Dan Hannaford Band. If you’re lucky, there might also still be some tickets to the Birds of Tokyo gig at The Northern (from 8pm) lurking around…

Insightful & unique readings at Newrybar Merchants every Friday. "Bloody amazing, mind blown" Jacqui, Food Story. Call Julie 0423 612 117

2 Cents Worth Got Something To Say?

PLASTIC FEE FREE BYRON, Anonymous This is for the business owners out there who don't pass on the fees when I pay with plastic. Thanks for not stinging me an extra 50 cents for my $9 smoothie and making it a $9.50 smoothie. Thanks for not making me think twice about coming back to you because of a 1% fee surcharge for plastic. Thanks for letting me pay what the price tag is. Thanks for letting me walk away feeling satisfied with your tasty coffee or lunch. I sympathise that is it is hard to make a living in Byron, and fees are probably due to our overlord of the big 4 banks. But I encourage businesses who pass on the fee to customers to think of other ways (other than a fee-charging ATM) for the dollars to make sense for you and your customers.

THONG THIEF, Barefoot & Pregnant I'm heavily pregnant and went for a walk down at Dolphins the other day, so magical! I kicked off my thongs at the end of the path and waddled my way down the beach in bliss. But on my return, imagine my surprise to find my sandals....missing! Gone! Vanished! Now, I know that baby brain is a thing, so I checked and double checked and triple checked. No thongs to be found. So to the thief who helped themselves to my $50 havianas...congratulations on making a pregnant lady walk barefoot back to her house. Not to mention that I now need to replace the thongs so that's less money for my placenta encapsulation fund. Oh and, I'm now literally a walking cliche barefoot and pregnant. If you need me, I'll be in the kitchen...

Congrats Barefoot & Pregnant, your submission has won you and a friend coffee and a sweet treat! Email at hello@byronbazaar.com to claim your prize. What are your thoughts on “Thong Thief”? Keep the convo going! Submit your 2 Cents Worth at byronbazaar.com/2cents

TEA TREE MULCH FROM THE FARM Tea tree mulch straight from the farm to you. Rough and fine chop minimum 6 metre loads and up $38.50 per metre delivered. Conditions apply. 0424 163 784 Dear Keenwa, I'm an old hippy and in 1970 we got a week full of macadamias for a fiver, now they're up to $90 a kilo. The price of nuts is nuts! How am I supposed to get the recommended daily intake, let alone enough to make cashew cheese on a pensioner wage? P.S. Have you tried that stuff? It's the best thing since gluten-free sliced bread.

FREE CROWDFUNDING WORKSHOP Learn how to plan, create, launch and run a successful crowdfunding campaign. Learn more & register online at www.pozible.eventbrite.com

- What the Nut Dear What the Nut, Speaking of nuts, here's a completely nutty fact for you. A recent study shows that a $1 increase in liquor tax reduces gonorrhoea rates by 2% and a tax increase of just 20c per six-pack reduces gonorrhoea rates by 9% and syphilis rates by 33%. If only you lot had known that in the 70s. Vegan cheese prices are yet to be considered. Dear Keenwa, I’m hosting my first dinner party in Byron Bay but I’m freaking out about what to serve. One friend is a raw vegan, one is paleo, two are gluten and soy free, and of course the token sugar-free-candida detox-er is coming, too. Do I just serve lettuce... and quinoa? - Short Order Cook Dear Short Order Cook, Oh quinoa, how I adore it’s skin coloured protein content, but even I gave up it up after a few days. I’m thinking more a three course a-la-carte option for your guests: Option one – a big plate of toughen the feck up. Option two – a generous bowl of air, or option three – POT LUCK. That’s where they bring their own damn cooking, you pretend to like it, then take all the credit for the fun evening and keep their dinnerware, as everyone’s always too polite to ask for it back, unless of course they’d like to wash it up on the spot. We’ll see who has the damn food allergies then.

Have a question for KEENWA? Ask her anything... byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

H E A V I L Y M E D I TAT E D with

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA - ESTABLISH YOURSELF IN YOURSELF. Morning after morning, I pour the foundation for my day, and for my future, by meditating. In meditation, I rise above the content and the circumstances. I tune myself to the devotional dimension. I remember my true nature. I sense the vastness of my capacity for living well and doing good. I draw a blueprint and lay the groundwork for presence, for gratitude, for compassion, for creativity, for perspective and for purpose. And when I bow my head and rise back up with open eyes, the slate is wiped clean. I see life more clearly. I see the sacred in the mundane. I move from the stable centre of sovereignty and set out into my day with solid footing, a map of self-awareness, and a compass with the needle pointing towards my intentions. Meditation is how I become established in myself. Less shakeable. More loving. Less reactive. More grateful. Less limited. More expansive. Less distracted. More potent. Establish yourself in yourself and your days unfold dierently.

With the Sun, Moon (during the New Moon period) and Mars in Gemini, communication and connection to like-minded people become the most important preoccupations. The emphasis on Gemini also brings over-stimulation of the mind and restlessness; a vigorous exercise regime or at least long walks might soothe the nerves. Especially on Friday’s New Moon we may encounter problems in relationships, which might overshadow the whole weekend, courtesy of a square from Venus in Aries to Pluto in Capricorn. Control and power issues, obsessions and compulsions need to be named, owned and addressed. Some relationships might be brought to a breaking point during this week. On Monday a Mars/Saturn opposition spells resistance; this is not a good time to try to make peace or call on goodwill and team-spirit! On Wednesday a Mars/Uranus sextile may bring enthusiasm, excitement and opportunity for change. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g

Aries When the Devil Tarot card appears it is time to reflect on the idea that every relationship you encounter, whether in your private or professional life, is a mirror of your inner relationship with yourself. It can be quite bewildering finding yourself trapped in unwanted situations and realising that you are a prisoner of your own choices and habits.

h

Taurus The 3 of Swords symbolises the pain you recreate when you hold on to old grudges or obsessively rework past situations. It can zap your life-energy and may feel like a wet blanket on everything you encounter. You can choose to focus on recovery by directing your thoughts towards all the things that are working well in this moment of time.

i

a

Libra This week the 4 of Disks challenges you to be decisive, set boundaries and look after your own interests first. Not an easy task for someone who thrives on harmonious interactions! The trick is to integrate the idea that taking care of yourself is an intricate and important part of balancing relationships.

b

Scorpio While others might have a difficult week, you shine in your inner strength and resilience. The 9 of Wands promises you mental/emotional alignment and clarity that helps you to persevere and tap into hidden reserves that were previously unknown to you. To keep it up, yoga, meditation or vigorous exercise may be helpful.

c

Gemini The Princess of Wands is the archetype of a free and unstoppable spirit and she adds fiery passion and desire for spontaneous expression to your already upbeat week. Many new ideas and perspectives might be conceived; only time can tell which ones are worth following through. Your wholehearted, cheerful energy is very uplifting for others as well.

Sagittarius The Prince of Swords asks you to examine your innermost motivations, and question what drives you to do the things you do. You might find thoughts, attitudes or beliefs that are actually sabotaging what you really want. Now is the time to cut through any outdated behaviour in order to truly free yourself!

j

d

Cancer The Ace of Swords brings clarity and decisiveness into any situation that you have been pondering for a while. Once you have dealt with old doubts or insecurities, you can trust your inner knowing and follow a new direction. Great original and creative ideas can be conceived and brought into reality straight away.

k

Capricorn The Princess of Cups relates to your great softness and inner sensitivity. You may choose to keep that part hidden and private at times because it feels safer. However if you take a risk this week and show your innocence and vulnerability, you may create strong connections and deepen relationships in exactly the way you long for.

e

Leo Mental hyper-activity is the astro flavour of this week, and with the 8 of Swords drawn your mind may be running in circles like a hamster in a wheel. You might experience excessive doubt and confusion that come from obsessively over-analysing certain situations. This is not the right time to make important decisions, however pressed you may feel! Breathe, ground yourself and wait...

Aquarius The 6 of Disks promises a successful week, not only in the material realm but also in building personal and business relationships. People value your authenticity and originality, and they are eager to listen to your refreshing perspective. You might be asked to step into an adviser, teacher or mentor role.

l

f

Virgo The Knight of Cups personifies the messenger who delivers great news or who offers you a gift. It is up to you to slow down enough to recognise the significance of the offering and to graciously receive it. You might find it much more difficult to receive than to give though; openness and receptivity require trust, surrender and letting go of control.

Pisces The Prince of Wands would like to inspire you to follow your passion wholeheartedly. All you need is a ‘can-do attitude’ which helps you to rise to any challenge on your chosen path. Don’t sweat the small stuff, rather allow yourself to be swept away in a creative current or a sublime adventure...

As mum to three young children, here is one of her favourite recipes which is great for little helping hands and perfect for lunchboxes.

Ingredients:

Method:

• • • • • • • • •

1.

2/3 cup brown sugar 175g unsalted butter (room temp) 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 egg 1 cup plain flour 1 tsp baking soda 2 cups rolled oats 1/4 cup raisins 150g dark chocolate (I use Whittaker's Dark chopped into chunks) • 1/3 cup macadamia nuts (cut in half)

2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Preheat oven to 180 degrees celsius. Place the sugar, butter and vanilla in the bowl of a mixer and beat until fluffy. Add the egg and beat for a further minute. Add the sifted flour, baking soda and rolled oats and mix until just combined. Fold through the raisins, chopped chocolate and macadamia nuts. Roll one tablespoon of the dough into balls and place on a baking tray lined with baking paper, leaving room to spread. Flatten slightly with a fork. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden. Cool on the trays for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to become completely cool. Makes 24.

Q&A

A Quick Chat With ...

CAMILLA ZAVATTARO Tattoo artist @milly_tattoos

How long have you been a tattoo artist? 18 years, I travelled to London when I was 19 back in 1997. I bought a tattoo machine from a guy I met at a bar...but that’s another story. My professional beginnings started when I was 21 and secured a spot at a tattoo studio called 'Classic Tattoo' in Toowoomba. My boss Paul Smith taught himself how to tattoo in jail in the 80s, a rough start for him and a rough start for me. That experience was a foot in the door at a time when tattoo shops were a closed and mysterious world. A secret society protected by the masters and students that ran it - if you defied the unspoken law you would end up broken down somewhere, by someone. What’s the most cliche tattoo of all time? Probably the 'it's for me' when the client insists on getting their tattoos upside down to indulge themselves instead of looking at the body as a canvas and getting the professional's advice. But hey, they have to wear it and I respect that. I think we (tattooists) need to grow and change with society and take an objective perspective. Everybody is free to think, to choose, especially what they want on themselves - it's empowerment. This has definitely been part of my journey. Are there any artists that inspire you? AHHHH so many! Definitely our crew at Rock of Ages, some days I blow out at the quality walking out of those doors, it’s crazy how good the crew is. Constant inspiration, evolution and devotion to our craft. And I mean pure tattooing, it encompasses most of our time, our lives, we are a family, a tattoo family. How would you describe your style? Modern traditional. What’s the key to a steady hand? Like any craft, years of practice and of course breath the foundation of life. What do you love most about where you live? I've just moved to Wardell, we are around the corner from Patchs Beach at South Ballina and most days we are the only footprints in the sand. Beautiful country and close to Lennox Head and Byron Bay. And, you can’t live without? Sex and coffee, no particular order. You can catch Milly at the Rock of Ages Tattoo Parlour in Lennox Head, but be quick, she’s in high demand!
