Around n w o T THIS Week

THERE’S ONLY ONE PLACE FOR reggae vibes fans to be on Friday: the new monthly Bay Collective Session event at Byron Bay Brewery. This month, the music of choice is reggae featuring Jesse Morris Band and Katia Demeester. It's free from 7pm

On Saturday, young ladies are invited to get off the grid with Future Dreamers for 'Wild Warriors', a full-day adventure in the Byron wilderness including tyre-tubing, mud masks, rainforest treks and more. Participation is $65. Saturday is also the night to get your jungle rave on in celebration of next Wednesday’s winter solstice, with Electric Forest, Byron’s longest-running dance music production hub, set to host its biannual Maya Solstice Festival at Kohinur Hall in Upper Main Arm. Pre-purchase tickets for this cyber tribal gathering for $25 via Eventbrite, or it’s 30 clams on the door.

Next Wednesday is also a good opportunity to head down to your local (or avoid it, if you’re not a footy fan), with most pubs offering food and drink deals to mark State of Origin game two, which will see NSW take out the competition if they win on the night. Go Blues!

DEAR KEENWA,

What's the go with after hours bedroom noise in a share house? I can't sleep! I'm not sure how to address it with my roomies. Are warnings appropriate? If so, what kind? How often is fair? Please explain. Thin Walls

DEAR THIN WALLS,

The last time I lived in a share house the unwritten law was to place a cowboy hat on the door to let the other tenants know of potential sleep interruptions, or was it car keys in a communal fruit bowl? Things you shouldn't do if you're the victim of loud procreating roommates are: texting your ex, getting jealous, or conducting sweet revenge the next night. Where is said share house? If it's Mullumbimby, I would consider their vocals an invitation. RSVP via car key in communal fruit bowl.

DEAR KEENWA,

My mate has never owned a car because they don't align with his spiritual beliefs, he hitches everywhere, or often calls me for a lift. Why should I pay rego and petrol to drive him around? Or am I being a tightass? Mates Rates

DEAR MATES RATES,

Someone's dad once said, “some friends are like rubber bands, they bind you safely, but get weaker when you stretch them too much.”I guess you have to ask yourself, apart from ripe and sweaty armpits, what does your mate bring to the party? Does he give you a sense of precarious adventure without the actual discomfort of living it? Stray women's phone numbers from the other rides he is catching? Roadside feathers from rare and exotic birds? Does he believe in deodorant? What you lose in money you may be gaining in wisdom my friend.

HAVE A QUESTION FOR KEENWA?

HEAVILY Meditated With Caitlin Cady

This week's mantra "HOPE IS NOT A PREDICTION OF THE FUTURE, IT'S A DECLARATION OF WHAT IS POSSIBLE." - YOGI BHAJAN One of my dear teachers, Jane Hardwicke Collings, says that there are always two choices - adrenaline (fear) or oxytocin (love). Hope falls under the category of love. Hope is a thoughtform, a frequency, a vibration, an intention sprung from the imagination of the heart.

Though we cannot predict or control the future we can declare our intentions for the future with the quality of our thoughts right now. Terrorised by fear or buoyed with hope. That is the choice you are making in this moment for your future. Make a conscious declaration for the future by turning your thoughts to a higher frequency. Broadcast your intentions from a place of hope not fear. How to clean up your mindspace and upgrade your thoughts? Meditate. Daily. Meditation is an ancient technology that is absolutely essential to living this modern life WELL.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

ON THURSDAY THE SUN / SATURN

opposition is exact. This has been building up for days and may have the effect of a ‘wet, cold blanket’ on whatever you think about. Don’t get drowned in negative thoughts and judgements, and if they are persistent right now, counter them with the awareness that ‘this will pass too’. Some folks might feel very frustrated and provoke serious trouble with authority figures this week... Soothe your mood with a creative project or enjoy some gardening time on Friday. On Monday a Sun/ Uranus sextile might bring forth some revolutionary ideas, but at the same time Mercury opposes Saturn which encourages narrowminded opposition and arguments. Tuesday and Wednesday are the perfect days to clear up any confusion, ask difficult questions and adjust your newly-found perspective accordingly. Even if this is a painful process, it helps to sort out the real from the ideal. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

The 5 of Wands paints a picture of strife or inner struggle. You may feel like every time you take one decisive step forward this week you are forced to take two steps back, which can be extremely frustrating. Breathe and be patient with yourself and others.

h TAURUS

With the 2 of Swords drawn you are longing for inner peace and clarity; so much though that you might not want to think too much about certain issues that upset you, or rock anyone’s boat. Maybe you just hope that some problems resolve themselves over time and it looks like they will...

i GEMINI

Especially if it is your birthday this week you might feel deeply affected by the oppositions that Saturn forms with the Sun or Mercury. In combination with the Knight of Swords drawn, your thoughts might run fast and furious through your mind and prompt you to quick action and reaction. Make sure you don’t lose your bigger perspective by rushing too much.

BY GISELA

k LEO

The Sun and Leo have much in common; the world lights up in their presence and without them everything is dull. This week you shine forth brilliantly with your inherent vitality, insight and benevolent leadership. Your warmth and enthusiasm for life make you irresistible and you act as a people magnet, inspiring and energising others.

l VIRGO

With the 8 of Wands drawn it’s all about communication, quick action and reaction; this could get messy though during the Sun/Saturn opposition of this week. You might have to contend with some serious fall-out if you challenge someone’s authority or even if you just plainly tell your truth...

a LIBRA

The Ace of Disks is the highest manifestation card and promises you concrete results in the material world. Feeling worthy and aligning yourself with the principles of prosperity and abundance, forms the foundation on which to build your success. Realise any non-deserving thoughts or judgements and release them straight away.

b SCORPIO

The Emperor represents personal power and leadership. You have a plan of action that promises to create order in situations that have been chaotic for a while, and you have the confidence to follow through. Saturn’s opposition to the Sun and Mercury might prove challenging; you have to be assertive and set limits while still being flexible in important negotiations.

c SAGITTARIUS

This week the Justice Tarot card highlights your passion for ethical principles and fair play. Before you challenge someone’s uncool behavior you must make sure that you feel calm, collected and balanced inside. If you act and react prematurely things might not work out well.

d CAPRICORN

The Tower appears when you feel threatened by sudden upheaval or change that is out of your control. Your natural reaction is resistance but the sooner you get in the flow of the unfolding events, the less painful this week will be. Make an effort to find the silver lining; this helps you to regain inner peace.

e AQUARIUS

The Ace of Wands removes negativity, obstacles and blocks. You enjoy feeling passionate and fired up, and this massive energy needs to be channelled into a worthwhile project. It may prove very frustrating if you don’t know what you want; in that case you may have to work out at the gym or run at the beach to let off steam.

f PISCES

The Queen of Cups represents the extremely watery, spiritual and sensitive parts of your being. In times of rising stress levels you might just want to retreat into your own private world, to daydream, meditate or contemplate the wonderful healing and soothing that Mother Nature provides you with.

H IN G GOT SOMET

TO SAY?

IRRESPONSIBLE MOTORISTS WHO THINK BIKE RIDERS SHOULD GET OFF THE ROAD, ANONYMOUS First of all, this is in no way an attack on the person from last week's (Issue #139) 2cents worth. In fact, I fully and 100% agree with you! If you ride a bike, where a helmet, use your lights when it's dark, and don't get mad when your bike gets stolen 'cause you're too cool for a bike lock (rolls eyes). But that article did inspire me to give my own 2cents. If you're a motorist who thinks bike riders (also known as CYCLISTS) (more eye rolls) aren't allowed in your lane, or have no business in the roundabouts, or are in your way in general, take a breath..... Now go and read the road safety handbook again. A cyclist must follow all the same traffic laws as a vehicle and should therefore be treated as such. We do our best to stay out of the way, but sometimes must merge into traffic and you'll have to slow down for like two seconds oh my god your life is over and you should probably start screaming and honking like a baboon (infinity eye rolls).

This powerful historical production is a recreation of the inquiry and gives voice to those who fought for peace between Australia’s oldest and newest inhabitants. The performance is a collaboration of leading Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, researchers, education experts and community members. Don’t miss out on this special play written by Andrea James and Giordano Nanni and directed by Eva Grace Mullally. Pumpkin puree toast INGREDIENTS • Pack of pine nuts

• 1/4 of a pumpkin

• Your choice of bread (we like one with a crunchy crust or whole grain)

• Chorizo

• 1 cup of balsamic vinegar. • 3 tablespoons of brown sugar.

• 1 Onion • 2 Eggs • Butter

• 1 tablespoon of salt.

METHOD • Start by boiling the pumpkin without the seeds, since this will take some time. You can add some sweet potato in the purée as well.

BY @OURMORNINGPLATE This week’s recipe comes from Charles and Courtney, a French/ American couple , now Byron locals, and experts in creating the perfect brekkie at home. Together they’ve grown a strong interest in cooking and experimenting with traditional American breakfasts as well as adding some French flair. We asked them to reveal their tantalising recipe for pumpkin puree toast.

20 BYRON BAZAAR

• Once the pumpkin is really soft, take off the skin and mash it with butter and brown sugar and a coffee spoon of salt. Add the butter in small pieces so it can melt in the mix (1/4 of a stick of butter should be enough). • You can now caramelise the onions. Slice them finely and keep stirring for 15-20 mn at low to medium heat with a tablespoon of brown sugar and a coffee spoon of salt in oil. • To obtain a thick balsamic cream

you need to reduce it. It will concentrate the flavour but be careful not to burn it. To do so add the cup of vinegar in a pot and stir it for 15 - 20 mn at low - medium heat ( the water just needs to evaporate). • Preheat the oven at 180°c and slice the chorizo finely to grill it. Keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't burn. • Pan the pine nuts until they start to have a brownish colour (no oils needed). (You can also add raisins) • Poach the egg and toast the bread at the last minute and you can reheat the puree before to serve.

Q&A A Q U IC K C H

A T W IT H .. .

Martin Chatterton, AUTHOR WHERE DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION FROM? Mostly from

things I observe around me. The news. People’s behaviour and language. Movies more than books.

WHICH DO YOU PREFER, WRITING CHILDREN’S BOOKS OR ADULT FICTION? I’m enjoying screenwriting at the

moment and those projects mostly happen to be in the adult arena. But I like both. Which sounds a bit weasely but is true. I like writing to an audience and have no time for anything creative that sets out to be ‘artistic’.

WHAT WOULD BE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR THOSE DISCOURAGED BYRON WRITERS? Are they all

discouraged? I guess that the most common mistake I see is people writing overly personal stories. This can work if you’ve had an incredibly interesting life AND you can write well, but often can come across as indulgent. When I’m offering advice (something I tend to avoid doing usually) it is to write with the reader in mind, not yourself. There’s also the thing that most writers see ‘getting published’ as the aim. I see that can be something to shoot for but getting published is the start not the end.

WHAT WERE YOUR FAVOURITE BOOKS AS A CHILD? My

favourite writers were Dr Seuss, Ian Fleming (the Bond books), Arthur Conan Doyle’s ‘Sherlock Holmes’ stories, and series like Biggles, Just William and the Famous Five.

YOU HAVE A TIME MACHINE, WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO GO AND WHO ARE YOU BRINGING WITH YOU? I do actually

have a time machine so I have already visited most eras. Of those, the one I remember with most affection would be the time I pitched up on board The Beagle alongside Charles Darwin. Lovely bloke, even if he was prone to flatulance.
