In other news, local foodies may have heard that Harvest won the Best Small Wine List gong at the Gourmet Traveller Wine List of the Year Awards earlier this month. This week brings a great opportunity to sample a few drops, with the Newrybar restaurant welcoming chefs Phil Marchant and Cormac Bradfield from Gauge, winner of the Brisbane Times Good Food Guide Restaurant of the Year 2017, to create a one-off dinner menu showcasing native ingredients on Wednesday as part of the Newrybar restaurants’ ‘chefs series’. The four-course feast rings in at $75/head; add $45 for wine pairings. Bon appétit!

G TO SAY?
WEATHER WOES, PETER HOLGARTH Is anybody else concerned about how hot it’s been in Byron? Hey, I’m not complaining – It’s like SUMMER here. But is this normal? It’s the middle of August for goodness sake. We should be wearing knits and lighting fires. A part of me is loving this non-stop sunshine but another part is feeling riddled with guilt at all the melting ice caps and rising sea water levels. I’m becoming hyper vigilant with turning off lights, and taps and not using my TV but I secretly know that I’m not doing enough for climate change. Come to think of it – I might go Google how I can, whilst on the beach….in the sunshine…with an ice cold beer. Love you Byron and your sweet, sweet Summer weather.
SHAKING TINS, DANIELLE ROGERSON I’m hesitant to write in about this because a part of me doesn’t want to point the finger at charities – but I can’t help but wish that those collecting for charity didn’t hover outside the front of our local shops. Sure, there are some days when I do have time to stop and listen to the cause but most days? I’m just trying to buy some milk and in a bit of a rush. And then, as I drive away I’m left feeling guilty because they’ve asked me twice in the space of two minutes if I can spare some time to chat. I understand that this is a good spot to get peoples attention but I hate having to say no. I want to give but don’t have the coin to sign up for a year’s subscription of donations (which is what they often push for). I’ve started dreading going to the shops in fear of judgment.
Congrats Danielle

DEAR KEENWA,
I had my heart broken last year by an epic guy, it's taken me months to move on, and every time I am on the verge of finally getting over him, he'll like one of my Insta photos and I get that old familiar feeling. Is he my twin flame or should I unfollow him? Strings Attached
DEAR STRINGS ATTACHED,
This babes, is known as the ol' 'bread-crumbing' trick. This jolly person wants to coat you with just enough energy to keep the cord in tact, and fill your own aura with a touch of theirs. Not because they love you, but because they're needy AF and want be wanted, to be never forgotten, but have no plan of actually seeing you. It is all about them. Greasy batter, uugh not a good look on anyone.
DEAR KEENWA,
My teenage daughter wants her boyfriend to stay over? Like under the same roof. Yay or nay? Mum's the Word

DEAR MUM'S THE WORD,
Most Aussie and American parents oppose sleepovers, and like to think that with the power of their mind they can stop adolescent sexuality. I tried to follow that out of sight, out of mind approach with gluten, and all I got were stomach cramps. I'm suggesting Byron follow the Dutchies' who research show actually expect teenage sex to go down in loving relationships, once again, pardon the pun. Their teenage pregnancy stats are also seven times lower than ours. If you want to stay connected with your girl, first establish if she is actually going steady. Go out and buy her a double bed. Track down a used copy of Where did I come from? Get some earplugs and condoms. Then ask her how it went the next day, you might just learn something.

HEAVILY Meditated With Caitlin Cady
This week's mantra “THE MEASURE OF YOUR MEDITATION IS THE QUALITY OF YOUR LIFE.” - YOGARUPA ROD STRYKER "I'm not good at meditation." If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone say that...I'd have a lot of dollars. It's a common sentiment for a reason. Meditation is not complicated but it's also not easy. Meditation asks us to quiet or focus the mind. So if you sit down to meditate but struggle to still your mind, you might label yourself a "bad meditator" and toss your budding practice into the Too Hard, Can't Be Bothered bin. But here's something that will flip the script on that experience you've labeled as "bad" and instead, keep you coming back for more. My teacher Rod Stryker said it best: “The measure of your meditation is the quality of your life.” In other words, don’t judge your meditation based on the experience you had during meditation, but rather on the effect your meditation practice has on your life. Then the question becomes not "Am I good at meditation?" but rather, "Am I better for having meditated?" to which the answer is a big YES. So give yourself permission to meditate imperfectly. It can feel wonky or frustrating and still be worthwhile and valuable. Show up even if it feels challenging, uncomfortable or unproductive. Because the benefits of meditation show up if you do, no matter how imperfect your practice.

IN
organised and meticulous Virgo, lost messages, misunderstandings and delays can be very upsetting. Don’t fall into the trap of criticising yourself or others harshly, just blame it on Mercury:) It is best to postpone big decisions until mid-September and avoid signing contracts, unless you have scrutinised them really well. Nevertheless, since we are between eclipses, endings and new beginnings that you may not have any control over, might have to be dealt with. Until the New Moon solar eclipse on Tuesday morning, re-working plans and considering new, sensible approaches to old challenges and problems works marvellously; just don’t jump to conclusions and into premature action yet. This is an opportunity to channel patience and determination into newly-found, long-term perspectives which may help you to achieve a greater inner balance and outer order. The New Moon, with Sun, Moon, Mars and North Node in Leo might inspire you to ponder how you could express your unique gifts and qualities more, and for the benefit of others too. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES
The 9 of Wands appeals to your inner strength and vision. You might have to deal with unexpected situations but your resilience and perseverance help you to keep your eyes fixed on the bigger picture. Giving up or in is not part of your vocabulary and you know instinctively how to tap into hidden reserves.
h TAURUS
The 6 of Cups symbolises renewal and regeneration through meaningful connections with friends and family. This is the week to indulge in simple pleasures and gracefully receive the good stuff that life offers you. You may also feel inspired to share the blessings you receive...
i GEMINI
The Knight of Wands is often called ‘Prince Charming’; he gets his way by displaying daring confidence and a great zest for life. You may adopt his attitude when you connect with new people, embark on an awesome adventure or catapult your creative expression to new levels.
j CANCER
The Ace of Cups is the big gift of the open, caring and nurturing heart. There are myriad ways to express your love and you generate great pleasure by communicating your feelings from a place of trust and emotional integrity.
BY GISELA
k LEO
The 4 of Cups challenges you to re-evaluate the relationship with someone close to you. Maybe the way you communicate and share feelings grew stale over time; maybe you are not as appreciative of the ways they show love as you used to be, or you might feel smothered. Take time to improve the quality of your interactions and do it with uttermost integrity.
l VIRGO
The Chariot heralds a time of new beginnings and a new decisiveness. Your confidence levels soar to new heights and with quiet determination you create new realities that suit you perfectly. New strategies and changes you make now come effortlessly and promise success.
a LIBRA
The 5 of Disks symbolises a time of worry. Even if you experience considerable hardship due to financial, vocational or relationship problems, it is not helpful to be caught up in negative ‘what-if’ scenarios that extend far into the future. Try to solve your troubles step by step, in little bits and stay in the here-and-now as much as possible.
b SCORPIO
The 5 of Wands reflects the state of strife and frustration. Whether you feel limited by situations beyond your control or you feel irritated by others, it is important to drop the constant inner arguments because they sap your energy. Try to find creative ways to release the pent-up energy; paint, write, dance or scream if necessary.
c SAGITTARIUS
The Strength Tarot card paints the picture of you riding a lion and stirring that powerful, wild beast towards your heart desires. The New Moon time may ignite your passion, fill you with courage and drive you to new creative expressions. You might feel delighted or intoxicated by a sense of awe and wonder for the possibilities that lie ahead.
d CAPRICORN
The 4 of Disks appeals to your natural leadership abilities. This week it may be necessary to know and assert your boundaries. You might not feel comfortable setting limits to certain people but if you are overly helpful or act out of guilt, you’ll regret it soon.
e AQUARIUS
This week the 8 of Disks may help you to get organised; there might be lots of details that you have to follow up in orderly precision. Even though you identify more with being a ‘big picture’ person and you don’t like to sweat the small stuff, this week it pays to chip away on your duties in a diligent and methodical way.
f PISCES
The Lovers Tarot card may ignite your romantic passion, your longing for union and merging with the other. Nevertheless you have to stay true to yourself and your own values, otherwise you lose yourself. Learning how to love and appreciate yourself as much as your partner is essential for forming the bond you are seeking.

• 6 cumquats
• 1 Tbsp honey
• 6 Tbsp raw cane sugar
ORANGE HONEY DRESSING • ½ cup extra virgin olive oil
• 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
• Juice of 1 orange
• Pinch sea salt
• 2 Tbsp honey
METHOD FOR CUMQUATS • Slice cumquats into 3mm rounds. • In a small pot, add ¼ cup water and 2 tablespoons sugar to make a sugar syrup. • Add sliced cumquats and bring to the boil. • Reduce heat to low and continue to
METHOD FOR DRESSING • Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until combined. Season to taste with a little more sea salt if required and reserve. • Preheat oven to 180C degrees. Wash and prepare carrots by removing tops and slicing larger carrots in half, lengthways if required. Place on a baking paper lined oven tray, drizzle with 4 tablespoons vegetable oil and sprinkle with a good pinch of sea salt. Place carrots in oven and cook for 20 minutes until just tender. Remove from oven and allow to cool.
cook cumquats until sugar syrup starts to reduce. • Remove from heat, pour cumquats into a sieve and drain. • Refresh cumquats immediately under cold running water then return to pot again with another ¼ cup water and another 2 tablespoons sugar.
• Rinse and drain freekah grains under cold running water, using a sieve. Place freekah in a medium sized, heavy based pot and cover with cold water, about 3cm higher than freekah. Turn heat to high and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and cook for a further 20 to 30 minutes until grains are cooked but still firm. Remove from heat and drain under cold water. • To assemble salad, return carrots to a 120C degree oven to warm.
• Repeat the cooking and draining process two more times, reserving sugar syrup on final drain. Stir honey into reserved sugar syrup then add glacé cumquats back into syrup.
for 1 minute, stirring often to avoid catching and burning. Stir in cumin then add cooked freekah. Stir well for a further few minutes until freekah is warmed through. • Place warm freekah in a large mixing bowl, add cavolo nero and gently combine. Transfer into a serving bowl and assemble carrots on top. Drizzle dressing over salad then sprinkle with feta, honey-glacé cumquats and pistachios. Serve immediately.
• Heat 2 tablespoons vegetable oil in a medium sized, heavy based pot, over a low heat. Add garlic and fry

Q&A A Q U IC K C H
A T W IT H .. .
Mark Swivel, DUSTYESKY TELL US, HOW DID DUSTYESKY START AND HOW DID YOU FIND THE 28 MEMBERS OF YOUR CHOIR? We learnt 3 songs for Mullum Music Fest in 2014. Members had to be able to replace a typewriter ribbon or tractor tyre.
DOES ANYONE IN THE CHOIR UNDERSTAND RUSSIAN? Nyet. But one bloke knows enough to find the train station and an underwear store.
YOU HAVE QUITE THE RUSSIAN FAN BASE. WHAT’S THE GREATEST PIECE OF FEEDBACK FROM YOUR RUSSIAN FANS YOU’VE RECEIVED SO FAR? A woman in Krasnodar near the Black Sea says she now sings Red Army Songs with an Aussie accent while she does the washing up. Oh, the unholy power of the interwebs!
WHAT’S YOUR VODKA OF CHOICE FOR A SING-ALONG? Any
vodka that goes well with gherkin. Show us the roubles, then we endorse capitalist brand!
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DUSTESKY REHEARSAL LOOK LIKE?
A blur of facial hair. A proletarian fashion show. Football training with more beer, less sweat.
YOU’RE PLAYING AT MULLUM MUSIC FESTIVAL LATER IN THE YEAR. WHAT’S THE BEST PART ABOUT PERFORMING AT HOME? Everyone speaks our Mullumgrad dialect. And our town is briefly the glorious capital of a world of human scale. Young and old, muso and punter, local and blow-in wristbanded together in happiness!
For information on show dates and to hear the amazing tunes from the Dustyesky Choir head to facebook.com/dustyeskychoir or Youtube
