BYRON PRIDE, ANONYMOUS How good is the new rainbow bridge over Belongil Creek? It is fantastic that our Council are so strongly symbolising their support of equality and inclusion on a road that locals and over two million tourists use each year. It’s a warming reminder, everyday when I drive over it, that we live in such a beautiful community that is not afraid to make a statement.
PARKING MANAGEMENT, GEORGINA BLACKWOOD In the lead up to summer, I have been thinking about how Byron can better manage the parking situation in the Clarkes beach, Captain Cooks and Wategos. It is so tiring driving all the way to Wategos in search of a spot, when if I was able to be informed about availability before even arriving at the round about at Massinger Street, I could save a lot of U turns on my morning commute. I’m thinking some electronic signage like they have at shopping centers.
Congrats Georgina

DEAR KEENWA,
I'm a single parent and my kids go to their Grannies every fortnight for the night, so I can have a break. I really look forward to it, but they come home high on T.V, gluten and plastic toys, all of which are banned in this house. I've told my folks the rules a few times, but they don't seem to listen, what to do? Mad Dad
DEAR MAD DAD, Have you double checked that they actually know what gluten is? My Pop thought the addition of GF on restaurant menus meant the meals were girlfriend-friendly. I wonder if you could set your oldies up with a star sticker reward chart? You might like to start them off with two stars a week, when they follow the rules without leaving the lines. When they get 100 stars you could take them to a vegan cafe for supper. Failing that, you could always wash their mouths out with soap.

DEAR KEENWA,
My girlfriend and I have been together for three years, and every night before bed she gets a headache. Does she need to detox? Have a benign dairy allergy? The drugs don't seem to be making a difference and I'm worried about the affect on her liver. Any other suggestions? Heads Up
DEAR HEADS UP,
Oh, I had one of those headaches for 13 years. Real nasty one. Strangely it never happened when my ex-hubbie was away on surf trips. Completely disappeared when I signed the divorce papers. I'm pretty sure all the paracetamol and lavender eye packs in the world won't shift a sore head of this kind. Luckily there's a specific massage course for these exact kind of headaches. It's a therapy that goes by the name of yoni massage. Watch. Learn. Practice. Au revoir headaches.

This week's mantra "THE WORLD CHANGES IN DIRECT PROPORTION TO THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WILLING TO BE HONEST ABOUT THEIR LIVES." -ARMISTEAD MAUPIN Regale me with tales of your triumphs, show me the sweet spoils of your efforts. But also, speak your failures. Shake out those tightly wrapped seeds of sadness. Bring them to the surface and unwrap them one by one. Whisper to me what hurts. Take my hand. Sing over the bones. I will listen. Because your truth matters to all of us. Especially if it hurts. Your suffering offers itself to be transformed into wisdom. Sharing that hard-won wisdom is the balm that soothes the wounds of your brothers and sisters. Your storytelling is the alchemy of healing. So tell the truth. All of it. The world is waiting for your medicine.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST
A LONG LASTING AND DISRUPTIVE
Jupiter/Uranus opposition which has been with us all year (more or less) is exact on Thursday. Issues we were dealing with in late February or early March might come back for re-assessment. Conflicting ideas and opposing beliefs could lead to stalemate situations. Old pain and doubts might resurface and because of the emotional tension that is going on, errors of judgement are likely. Therefore it is not the ideal time to make far-reaching decisions or to embark on a new project. Nevertheless many people might feel compelled to examine the state of their intimate relationship, while Mars and Venus dance together in analytical and critical Virgo for the next two weeks. Neptune’s opposition to the pair clouds the picture and adds to the general confusion, while Pluto, the big transformer, trines the pair. With his x-ray vision he probes into our weak or sore spots. This could be a very difficult week for a relationship that is already on rocky ground. Don’t forget to set your clock one hour forward on Sunday morning – Daylight Saving starts! For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES
With the Queen of Disks drawn you might function as an island of strength and stability in an ocean of changing emotions, obsessions and misunderstandings. You stand determined, grounded and trustworthy in your truth and may provide wise leadership to your loved ones.
h TAURUS
The 6 of Swords recommends innovative thinking when you encounter recurring issues. The Bull’s default way would be to try one more time, just a little bit harder, but this week you fare much better if you find new solutions to old problems and think outside the box of your comfort zone.
i GEMINI
The 5 of Disks pictures the pain of the troubled mind and how hard it is to break out of habitual worry patterns. You might find that as soon as stress levels rise your mind gets drenched in negative thoughts and judgements. This week it would be best to avoid stress as much as possible, or at least to counterbalance it with conscious, daily relaxation.
j CANCER
While other people struggle with deep emotions, you are sailing in smooth and calm waters with the 2 of Swords drawn. Maybe you are just refusing to buy into any hype, or maybe you have truly found a deep, relaxed, peaceful place inside. Now you long to keep things that way forever, even though you are acutely aware of the non-permanence of this state.
BY GISELA
k LEO
The Knight of Swords represents male, passionate and focused action. Therefore no amount of well-intended cautioning can hold you back this week; you act with certainty and you impress others and, to a degree, even yourself! Do you know your ultimate goal or are you just having fun seeing how far you can take it?
l VIRGO
As last week, the Princess of Disks is drawn. She symbolises a very feminine and intricate creation process that takes time. You might be pondering new ways of living, a new career, a new life-style or a new project. Keep in mind that most of the creative effort happens way before things start to get visible in the real world; trust your inner voice and your hunches, you are already further than you think.
a LIBRA
With the Hierophant drawn for this week, you might adopt the stance of a wise healer and teacher. You won’t be dragged into other people’s confusion or disappointment. You may play an essential role in resolving a family issue and your balanced view is very much appreciated in the wider community.
b SCORPIO
One of the main Scorpio traits is resilience, and the 9 of Wands supports you with a big dose of it during this week. Therefore no matter how muddy the waters get, you’ll find your way through to the other side where mental clarity, inner strength and intuition guide you to right action at the right time.
c SAGITTARIUS
You might experience the 10 of Wands as a wet blanket dulling your perceptions. This week it might be difficult to reconnect with your usual get-up-and-go, and if you judge yourself harshly for it, you lose even more energy. Try to stay in the natural flow of things, even if that feels like treading water right now. It soon will pass...
d CAPRICORN
The Judgment Tarot card speaks of self-reflection, self-evaluation and a rebirth of some kind. Your willingness to honestly assess where you are at might assist you to reconnect with some long-lost parts of your original vision. Trust your accurate perception of the bigger picture.
e AQUARIUS
The 2 of Disks heralds change as the only constant thing in our universe. This week you are challenged to stay in the flow of things and to respond to changing situations in a practical, matter-of-fact way. If you stubbornly hold on to old versions of reality, you’ll lose your footing more than once!
f PISCES
With the Knight of Disks drawn your energy levels might be low, and doubts about your choice of direction might be bugging you. It is best to listen to your feelings. If you’re less than enthusiastic about how things are unfolding, it might be time to quit, instead of hoping for small gains.

Big Scrub
14TH-15TH OCTOBER | MULTIPLE LOCATIONS The 19th annual Big Scrub Rainforest Day is on again! In association with Rous County Council, Big Scrub Landcare presents one of Australia’s largest annual environment and community events and you are invited along on the weekend of the 14th and 15th October to discover our rainforests. The Big Scrub, our local rainforest, covered 75,000ha prior to European settlement. Tragically European settlers cleared almost 99% of this magnificent rainforest and by 1900 all that remained was less than 1% as scattered remnants across the landscape. The remnant areas contain a rich diversity of flora and fauna, supporting more than 300 species of trees and shrubs and at least 28 threatened species of flora and 22 species of fauna occur in these remnants. Big Scrub Landcare’s mission is to restore and care for our critically endangered rainforest focusing on promoting, facilitating and undertaking longterm on-ground restoration and ongoing care of critically endangered lowland subtropical rainforest through their key program areas. As part of their community engagement program, the annual Big Scrub Rainforest Days have had an aggregate attendance of more than 22,800, making it one of the most successful and enduring Landcare community engagement events in Australia. For details and bookings of events, sponsored by Brookfarm, Lismore City Council, Stone & Wood and Rainforest Rescue visit www.bigscrubrainforest.org/big-scrub-rainforest-day/

David’s Meatballs and Sugo with 100 Mile Table INGREDIENTS For Meatballs • 1kg beef mince (we like to use brisket but not essential) • 1 bunch parsley, roughly chopped • 15g salt • 4g pepper • 200g pecorino, coarsely grated • 1 whole egg • 1 large clove garlic
METHOD For Meatballs • Preheat an oven to 210C
BY @100MILETABLE Located in the Arts and Industry Estate, 100 Mile Table Cafe is a dynamic hub for locals and tourists with a focus on food that is local, seasonal and sustainable. This recipe is from head chef, David Lovett who serves it at the café as part of a sandwich or on a rocket salad.
18 BYRON BAZAAR
• Add all ingredients to a large bowl and mix together with your hands. Form the mince into 40g balls • Place the meatballs into an oven tray and roast for 8 minutes. Remove from the oven and add the tomato sugo • Bake for a further 8 -12 minutes
For Sugo • 1.25kg whole peeled Italian tomatoes • 1 1/2 Tablespoons olive oil • 1 small brown onion, peeled and finely chopped • 1 small clove garlic • 1/4 bunch basil, leaves only • 1/2 teaspoon chilli flakes • Salt, to taste For Sugo • Heat the olive oil over medium heat in a large heavy based saucepan. Add the onion and garlic and cook gently without colouring for about 3-4 minutes, until soft and translucent • Increase the heat to high and add the basil. Cook until the colour bursts from the leaves then add the whole tomatoes and cook for 21 minutes (yes, 21 is a David thing). Make sure the sugo is not too jammy or over-reduced as it will cook down further once in with the meatballs – but we also love the freshness of it

It's so dry at the moment while we wait for rain, so here are some tips to get us through... Be bushfire prepared - Be water conscious - Shower with a bucket - Or even better, shower in the ocean! Leave a water bowl out for wildlife. Remember to pack your reusable coffee cup, cutlery, lunchbox, water bottle and shopping bags when you go out and about.

Q&A A Q U IC K C H
A T W IT H .. .
J'aimee Skippon-Volke, @BYRONBAYFILMFESTIVAL HOW DID YOU GET INTO FILM AND TV PRODUCTION? Both
my parents worked in Film and TV in the US, Australia, NZ and then finally the UK. I grew up on shoots and on sets and because they literally pioneered Video Production I had access to professional equipment, cameras and editing desks even as a child.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE BYRON BAY FILM FESTIVAL TEAM? I was really driven initially by the feeling that Byron needed a cultural flag-pole, and that many of the things I loved about our town were slowly being replaced by blander experiences. I felt by building a visual footprint on the screen we could re-enforce and relive our Byron spirit.
WHAT IS THE MOST EXCITING PART OF DIRECTING THE BBFF?
Meeting the filmmakers and helping them have an amazing experience connecting with their audience. Hands down, being able to help so many amazingly talented creatives – it’s what drives our whole team.
WHY DO YOU BELIEVE THE BBFF HAS BEEN SO SUCCESSFUL, BEING RECOGNISED AS ONE OF THE LARGEST REGIONAL FILM FESTIVALS IN AUSTRALIA? I really believe that an
event has the energy that was put into it in its ‘vibe’ (I’m allowed to say that because I’ve lived in Byron for 20 years) – there’s lots of love in BBFF, which I think is why people love it back.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR PASSION FOR VIRTUAL REALITY AND VISUAL EFFECTS AND WHAT WORK YOU ARE DOING IN THIS SPACE? I’m going back to my own filmmaking
roots, and have set up a Production Company – Collective Reality - which is making narrative VR pieces. My Partner Ossie, is a skilled technician, and his team GreenhouseFX|3D|VR can film in 360, and do the post. So together we make a great team.
