There’s plenty else happening in the Bay on Saturday, including the Point Zero Day Party at the YAC kicking off from noon with a DJ line-up featuring Autopilot, Get Down, Strange Planet and more. Tickets for boozefree event will set you back $30 on the door. Over at the Brewery, the Bay FM Great ‘80s Christmas Discotheque gets going from 7pm, with ten of the local station’s best retro DJs lined up to take you back to the era of synth, scrunchies and power ballads. Dig out your fingerless gloves and parachute pants and join the party for $27 (tickets via bayfm.org). If you love a good Sunday session, don’t miss Coco Republic’s Christmas throwdown, Club Tropicana. The party kicks off at the Beach Hotel from noon, with the usual Coco residents providing the tunes. WHY STOP AT COFFEE CUPS? - TRAINED OBSERVER It is great that Byron Shire has embraced the plasticfree packaging movement. The thing is lately I feel that while my plastic consumption is dropping my brown paper consumption is going up. I am talking about brown paper napkins, fashionable paper bags with business logo stamped on the side and lastly serving food on cardboard trays. I find that last one strange, and I guess it is better than food in polystyrene or plastic trays but I find it strange that food is served this way when I am dining in. How about re-useable plate movement for cafés and takeaways, you know the ones made of china that we use and wash at home every day. Is there a reason why I am eating off eco-friendly paper trays so much? Are they better and greener than a good ol' fashioned plate?
PARK PROPERLY - LOCAL DO-GOODER I was walking the lighty with my GF on the weekend and noticed a few ‘Hippy Vans’ parked in the disabled car parks. They were busy unpacking their dining tables, preparing their baked beans and brewing up some coffee. Whilst I love ‘#vanlyf and have done a lot of it around the globe, it annoys me when the art of stealth camping actually imposes and disregards the area and the people within it. Read the signs and respect the locals.

DEAR KEENWA, So after checking the coast was totally clear at the beginning of the year, I made the perfect hashtag for my fiancée’s last name for our approaching wedding. But a little over a month ago, a couple (who doesn’t even have Instagram) got engaged and their friends started posting with MY hashtag. Ugh. Should I keep both, like let them share the tags with me and over populate with my photos to drown them out, or just create a new hashtag for the wedding? #bridezilla
DEAR #BRIDEZILLA, Social media and the institution of marriage have a lot in common. Both are owned by the man. Both are patriarchal productions. Both are free to do with you, as they wish. Congratulations, but the honeymoon is over baby, time to get used to the feeling of being owned by somebody other than yourself.

I'm a real estate agent and making serious bank in Byron, if you know what I mean. My boyfriend is cute but he's a student, and the bill always conveniently goes on my tab. What's fair? Paywise
DEAR PAYWISE, Here's the thing. When you get knocked up to said student eventually, as this is the most fertile place on the planet, and you no longer have your lovely wage, and are sharing your baby bonus or paid maternity leave whilst forfeiting your superannuation, along with your sleep and sanity, will your Baby Dadda be picking up the tab then? If you truly think so, then sure, be a little generous, if it's not affecting your libido. There's a reason rich men get laid. My advice if you're unsure? Split the bill and put the leftovers in a savings account for your future babes.

This week's mantra - START WHERE YOU ARE.
We've managed to turn personal practices into a competitive sport. Whether it's yoga or meditation I find that many people are intimidated to dip their toe in because they think they aren't "good enough" or they aren't "ready." In the context of yoga, I often hear folks say “I'll start going to a class when I'm more flexible...or when I lose 15 pounds." In the context of meditation, I hear "my mind won't stop thinking,” "I'm not good at meditation" or "I'm too busy." This tells me that many of us have a perception that there are prerequisites for what is a purely personal practice. This couldn't be further from the truth. There is no set starting point and no qualification needed to start doing yoga or meditating. In fact, both practices invite us to show up just as we are. That means accepting that we only have 15 minutes to practice, or acknowledging that we have tight hamstrings or a busy mind, or a job, a dog, a husband and three kids. Why is this such a profound way to begin? Because it's liberating AF. The idea of identifying our own starting point removes the perception of a fixed starting point and instead invites us to come as we are. Kids, dogs, jobs, tight hammies or tight schedules included. It also means that we set achievable goals. The 7-min meditation you DO will benefit you and keep you showing up for more, while the 30-minute meditation you never get to not only doesn’t serve you but also undermines your entire attitude ("I failed again.") Furthermore, by honouring our personal starting point, we focus on our personal journey and individual progress rather than competing and comparing. This approach makes yoga practice inclusive and open to all, rather than a competitive sport suitable only for the flexible, strong, or spiritually advanced. The same is true of establishing a meditation practice. You don't need to be religious, spiritual or even have a calm mind or an hour to spare. You just need to start where you are.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST
ANOTHER TRULY SAGITTARIAN WEEK
with Sun, retrograde Mercury, Venus and Saturn in the sign of the enthusiastic and freedom-loving Archer! While the Moon is still in Scorpio, she catches up with Mars on Thursday. Deep and intense feelings might well up and hit you like a tsunami; impulsive action and response might follow, with possible regrets later. On Friday la Luna teams up with Jupiter and amplifies exactly these emotions, maybe to a boiling or breaking point. On Saturday, just before the Moon’s ingress into Sagittarius, retrograde Mercury catches up with Venus. Here is a wonderful day for an honest and healing conversation to clear the air and talk about things that have been bugging you for a while. Don’t limit anyone’s freedom or expression during the New Moon time in Sagittarius on Monday; we might all feel quite self-righteous! On the upside some new and exciting ideas might be born; how realistic they are, will be revealed in the last few days of this year. On Wednesday Saturn, who has been in Sagittarius since mid-2016, moves into earthy and ambitions Capricorn. Here he resides until early 2020; he makes sure that we work diligently, fulfil our responsibilities and keep our commitments. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES
Aries, as a fire sign, resonates strongly with the sagittarian flavour of this week, and the Princess of Wands drawn might amplify your quest for liberation and spontaneous self-expression. You feel fired up and self-assured and your enthusiasm is contagious, but could turn dangerous if fenced in.
h TAURUS
The Wheel of Fortune represents good luck and success with any ventures this week, but only if you can stay flexible enough to respond positively to new developments and situations. As you awaken to new possibilities you are more willing than ever to take a calculated risk.
i GEMINI
The 9 of Swords symbolises mental overactivity that might push you close to burnout. Try to release some of your inner tension by spending time in nature, even if you think that you don’t have enough time to do just that! A physical workout might also help to relieve some stress and clear your head.
j CANCER
The Princess of Disks represents the creative force of the goddess in her gestation phase. You might be incubating some great new ideas: how to change your lifestyle, how to build a new business or a new career. You feel optimistic and you know that you can make things happen in a quiet and soulfully inspired way.
BY GISELA
k LEO
With the 2 of Wands drawn you are ready to tackle any challenge and seize the day. Just make sure that you are acting from a place of inner calm and equilibrium. If you feel so fired up that you assert yourself only because you can, but without purpose, you are asking for trouble.
l VIRGO
The 2 of Disks highlights the fact that the only constant thing in life is change. If you go with the flow this week and don’t worry too much about ticking off your to-do list, you might achieve more of what you truly want. This may be a surprisingly enriching experience!
a LIBRA
With the Temperance Tarot card drawn this week you might shine brilliantly in your ability to balance and harmonise difficult conversations and polarised discussions. Your natural need for inner and outer equilibrium assists other people to drop extremes and opt for negotiation and moderation.
b SCORPIO
The 7 of Cups depicts emotional suppression, a crisis of meaning or an inner emptiness that is hard to endure and is often followed by an overdose of indulgence of any kind. Especially on Thursday and Friday you might be tempted to over-do things. Try to stay conscious of your impulses and find something that is truly nurturing for you to enjoy.
c SAGITTARIUS
Saturn is in his last degree in Sagittarius and, combined with the 10 of Wands, you might feel the weight of the world on your shoulders, even more so if it’s your birthday this week! It is up to you to remove yourself from oppressive situations and to establish clear boundaries. You’ll feel much better when you live your truth!
d CAPRICORN
The 7 of Swords indicates the dangers of self-sabotage. Prolonged negative thinking leads to negative expectations and starts to be self-fulfilling… Listen carefully to your thoughts this week and if they contain too many ‘yes, but’ or ‘if only’ and ‘should have’ then you know it is time to redirect your mind to more inspiring thoughts and loving kindness towards yourself.
e AQUARIUS
The 6 of Wands symbolises triumph and victory. As a humanitarian you certainly feel best when your success includes a win-win situation for all parties involved. This week you are given an opportunity to achieve this and the outer recognition may not even be half as important as the inner feeling of worthiness.
f PISCES
When the Tower appears, certain situations are spiralling out of control and you are not in the mood to appreciate the chaos that develops. If you have your plans disrupted this week or if you get a ‘wake-up’ call remember to surrender (for now) and allow the transformation to take place while being gentle with yourself.

I love this time of year. The promise of festive times and new beginnings; surf, sun and endless ‘kiniclad days. We shed our winter coats along with any heaviness of the year and take on a lightness of being (and body). That is, until December 25 lulls us into a week long food coma. Let’s face it, Christmas Day forecast (for many) is MORE – family friction and food-babies THAN – “Fa-la-la-la-la”. But it doesn’t have to be. If you’d rather replace overstuffed and irritable with energised and wholly renewed, then stay close by. I’m delivering a weekly swag of rituals, practices and holiday-hacks to upgrade your awareness and gift you a calm centre during hypersocial, sometimes stormy, always silly season.
#1 INTENTION SETTING First things first. Carve out some quiet time to reflect on your intention for the coming month. Contemplate how you’d like to feel and ask yourself, ‘what really matters?’ Perhaps your intention is to simply to be more present with your loved ones? To navigate the festive feasts with portion prowess and grace? Or to mine every situation, event and interaction for golden nuggets or gratitude and fun?
Consider intention setting your starting point.

Considering your desires in this way might sound overly simply. It’s surprisingly powerful. Why? Because intention is the compass of your heart - your true north, helping you separate the signal from the noise and aligning your thoughts, actions, decisions and interactions with what matters most to you. It is the invisible force that stops you wandering right off the path to whole and happy and getting waylaid in old stories, triggers and emotional land mines. A sincere intention will help you navigate your way through stress-inducing situations of the holiday season. It will help you avoid family feuds and replace confusion and chaos with big magic.
For a holiday-hack that will have you feeling light, fresh and wildly free, tune in next week!

This week's location THE ROCK AND ROLL COFFEE COMPANY, MULLUMBIMBY When I wrote a post on the blog last year about 10 Byron Bay Breakfasts You Need to Try, I received some great tips about local breakfasts I had yet to discover. One of them was the Egg Kurasawa served at The Rock and Roll Coffee Company in Mullumbimby, which I have since tried and added to my list. The Rock and Roll Coffee Company serves the Egg Kurasawa on their breakfast menu six days a week from 7.30am (they are closed on Sundays). It’s a generous bowl of rice topped with luscious scrambled egg, teriyaki tofu, avocado, seeds, wasabi mayo and shreds of roasted nori for a toasty finish. The breakfast and lunch menus are a mix of Asian and western options. It’s a popular lunch spot for workers and locals. The lunchtime menu includes dishes like Gado Gado and Laksa. Try the Bam Bam Chicken and the Pat Thai. The café closes at 3pm but reopens from Wednesday to Saturday from 5pm to serve a dinner and takeaway menu. Reservations are absolutely essential as the place draws a crowd. Dinner is all pan-Asian with curries, soups, dishes from the wok and house specialties like the incredible Crispy Half ‘Luva Duck’. There is a simple dinner menu for kids and all dishes are clearly marked with Gluten Free, Vegetarian and Vegan options. The coffee rates a mention as well.

PLASTIC FREE Mermaid
sexy choices, sexy body, sexy oceans With Kate Nelson
Plastic Free Holiday Gifts, Bath Love Bomb INGREDIENTS: • • • • • • • •
1 cup organic bicarb soda (gives it an explosive fizz) 1/2 cup cornstarch 1/4 cup oats (soothes skin) 1 tsp of oil (olive, jojoba, coconut) 1 tbsp lemon juice 6-8 drops essential oil, mix & match: lavender (soft & relaxing), lemon (invigorating & fresh), mint (stimulating and cooling) Collect lovely scented flowers, hang-dry and remove stems. Or buy dried flowers from in the tea section in health shops (rose, lavender, chamomile, mint) Take jars with you and buy organic, bulk ingredients
METHOD: • • •
• • • •
Mix dry ingredients in a bowl Add liquids carefully, you don’t want it to get too wet. The aim is a crumbly mixture that holds shape when squeezed together Place a plum-sized ball of mix in your palm. Press a finger into the centre creating a hole, push in the dried flowers, and close up the hole. Press flowers into the top for extra cuteness. (The idea is that once the ball begins dissolving in the bath and poof the flowers appear) Let dry. Humidity pending, for 12-24 hours Store in an airtight container to prevent them getting soggy during our rainy summer Wrap up sweetly. Give the gift of fizzy, fragrant relaxation *If your love bombs refuse to hold shape, press into a muffin tin & dry them in the oven on low heat for 45 minutes or until they keep shape

Chai Chia Protein Pudding by Alison Starratt
@LIVINGNATURALI INGREDIENTS • • • • •
3 cups of steeped chai tea ½ cup chia seeds ½ cup rolled oats ½ tsp cinnamon 1 tbsp vanilla protein powder (love Amazonia Raw!) or ½ tsp vanilla extract
• •
Pinch of Himalyan or Celtic Salt Optional: sweetener and toppings of choice
METHOD Alison grew up near the ocean in Canada, and knew she had found her other home when she moved to Byron Bay. Her heart was taken with the beautiful nature, food and consciousness of the community. She is following her passions as the manager of Heart and Soul Health Clubs, where she teaches weekly yoga classes. Her love of living healthily and happily is something she readily shares with others, grateful for every opportunity to create connection.

• Steep chai tea (my favourite is local Hari Har Chai). • Place 3 cups of cooled steeped tea in a 1L jar. Add all ingredients, stirring for a minute or so. Add sweetener if desired. • Put jar in fridge overnight and in the morning, remove from fridge to serve. Enough for 2-3 portions and the jar makes it easy to keep for the next day. • Top with berries, mango, coconut flakes, cacao nibs or what you desire!

Sebastian Li - Team Leader, Bye Bye Plastic Bags @BYEBYEPLASTICBAGSAUS
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION BYE BYE PLASTIC BAGS? Bye Bye Plastic Bags is a social initiative
driven by youth to say NO to plastic bags, and single use plastics. We aim to spread the message about the implications that plastics have on our environment, and what we can all do in order to reduce our use of single use plastics.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE FOUNDERS AND SISTERS, MELATI AND ISABEL WIJSEN? Melati and Isabel Wijsen
founded Bye Bye Plastic Bags in 2013, when they were aged 12 and 10. Today, our team is ever growing, and Melati and Isabel managed to get Bali plastic bag free by 2018!
WHERE DO YOU RUN THE CAMPAIGNS? Bye Bye Plastic
Bags has recently launched a ‘global’ aspect of our ethos. Today, there are over 16 different countries that have brought BBPB to life. We provide opportunities for people of all ages to participate in multiple awareness-raising activities.
YOU VISITED TWO SCHOOLS BYRON BAY A FEW WEEKS AGO. CAN YOU TELL US HOW THESE WERE RECEIVED? We presented in front of the local primary schools in Byron Bay, the response was absolutely heart warming. We were so glad to see all the kids so passionate about environmental education, and they were enthusiastically interested about what they could do to make a difference.
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR FAMILIES TRYING TO CUT DOWN THEIR PLASTIC USAGE? Start small. Change is a
big thing that may be intimidating to some. But if we all do a small shift in our lifestyle, then together, the benefit will be gargantuan!
