On Saturday, Byron School of Art launches its Summer Tasters program (running until 25 January) with threehour samples of many short courses and workshops that will be on offer at BSA in 2018. Come Sunday, it’s over to the Surf Club for The Art of Survival, an exhibition of locallybased Aboriginal artists’ work exploring the theme of cultural survival. The official opening night is on Monday night at 6pm, with the exhibition running though Friday 14 January. On Sunday night, Shake ‘n’ Bake returns to Byron for its third year with Sureshaker’s Boo Seeka, Bootleg Rascal, Goldmember and Shaker DJs manning the decks at the The Northern from 9pm; tickets $26. If you feel like starting early, Coco Republic will be bringing the funky house beats to the Beachy from 5-10pm; $5 entry.

a w n e r e a e K D DEAR KEENWA, Had dinner with my mate last week. He talked about Bitcoin the entire time, even when he was chewing. He also talked about Bitcoin when we bumped into each other in the surf. And then again when I ran into him at the supermarket. I still don't understand what Bitcoin is, which doesn't bother me, but do I need to join up just so he shuts up? Bitmuch

DEAR BITMUCH, Well, maybe if you had listened to your mate last week, you'd be a millionaire by now and way too busy on your yacht/jet ski/private jet to be writing in for advice from me. What I do recommend is investing in a top of the range pair of noisecancelling headphones, because as long as you feel guilty about not having joined, your mate and the rest of the Bitcoin cult will feel like their mission has been achieved, and continue crypto-preaching to anyone else who'll listen (or not listen, they don't seem to discriminate.)

DEAR KEENWA, I'm friends with my daughter on Instagram. I try to like all her photos to support her, even when the composition is off and the filter a bit too much, but lately she has been posting rather exposed images of herself, and talking about self-love. Why she gotta do this publicly? To like or not to like? Single Dad

DEAR SINGLE DAD, I had a convo with a dad of teenage girls recently. A poet-kinda fella. Nice guy. He was upset because he thought his daughters' wore too much makeup in an attempt to look good for other people, when they 'should' be happy with the natural faces he had given them. When I told him that I like to wear lipstick and my best knickers when I'm home alone doing the vacuuming sometimes, things got ugly. You see even this adoring dad didn't get that women who love themselves do nice things purely for themselves. What's not to like about your daughter liking herself so much that she can express it in her natural state, freely and openly? How 'bout liking that she is changing the world by owning her positive body image, one like at a time?

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

FROM FRIDAY ONWARDS WE HAVE 5

planets in Capricorn (Sun, Mercury, Venus, Saturn and Pluto)! It is time to buckle down, be responsible and organised. Procrastination is not an option; it creates more stress in a time when achieving goals is the only thing that makes us happy and happening. Ambitions are high and many people may feel the need for personal recognition, which might not come forth easily. Sun, Venus and Pluto dance in unison which intensifies any Capricorn-related matters; on the upside this focused will-power can move mountains, but on the downside it might become overly controlling, rigid and austere. From Monday to Wednesday this energy gets magnified to the maximum when the Moon travels through the Mountain Goat’s territory as well. The New Moon time is usually an inward oriented time, but the Capricorn New Moon on Wednesday is one of the best days of the year to set goals, create a new business plan or update your to-do list. All earth signs (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn) might be happy with restrained and sombre energy this week; but it may harbour many frustrations for fire signs (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius), and might be experienced as heavy weights on the shoulders of air signs (Gemini, Libra and Aquarius). For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

The 4 of Wands represents the end of a cycle and the beginning of a new one. You may be celebrating well-deserved rewards for your efforts; make sure you take time to appreciate them, while you are already on the look-out for new ventures and adventures.

h TAURUS

The 9 of Wands symbolises not only your physical stamina, but also your will-power, their combined strength makes you persevere and stay on task until completion. You may feel invigorated this week and you are definitely one of those people who can move mountains right now.

d CAPRICORN

With the Moon Tarot card drawn you might not be in the mood to accomplish anything much, unless it’s a creative project or a romantic pursuit. You might feel dreamy or confused and the world may feel like a harsh place. Time out in nature soothes your soul and uplifts your spirit.

The 6 of Wands promises victory and success which is built on the premise of a winwin situation for all people involved. Allow yourself to truly enjoy your hard-earned achievements, practise letting in praise and give yourself a pat on the back.

a LIBRA

The Temperance Tarot card likens life to an art form, well-balanced and expressed aesthetically. Where possible all extremes should be avoided; therefore don’t over-think, over-analyse or over-work. Allow a bit of free-flowing time for things to naturally fall into place and trust that they will!

The Star Tarot card nudges you to be your own star; nourish, adore and pamper yourself a bit, not only others, and take time out to count your blessings. Recognition may come your way this week, even without major efforts on your side.

j CANCER

The 3 of Wands represents tenacity, focus and commitment. Equipped with these, plus Mars and Jupiter in your sign, you are moving beyond any doubts and uncertainties, as you investigate all details of your objectives carefully. You gain great clarity and direction. Once you feel safe you are ready for action.

The Strength Tarot card gives you plenty of energy to leap and bounce from one task to the next during this goal-orientated week. Your ‘can-do’ attitude, vitality and enthusiasm radiate out into the world and convince others to join you.

b SCORPIO

The 2 of Swords symbolises the peace of mind that comes when you have made a decision and are now committed to a certain path. This may be a complex process and takes a lot of energy because of your ingrained belief that the grass might ultimately be greener on the other side.

With the 10 of Wands drawn and five to six planets in your sign, you might feel enormously driven and in need of accomplishment. At the same time you may be over-extending yourself and shouldering too many responsibilities and burdens. Don’t be so hard on yourself and tell that inner slave-driver to back off.

e AQUARIUS

The Knight of Wands represents a leap of faith regarding a new venture; you are alert, focused and your timing is excellent. A dynamic change of consciousness and renewed confidence assist you to take on any challenge with gusto, and success is a given.

f PISCES

The Empress Tarot card evokes feminine sensitivity and tenderness as she taps into the wisdom of Mother Earth. You might feel compelled to escape the busy mundane world and its ratrace. As you allow yourself to be nurtured by nature, you recharge your batteries and feel better equipped to care for yourself and those that are in your care.

This week's mantra TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR EXPERIENCE. Sometimes shit happens. Sometimes things don’t go to plan. People are late. Targets are missed. Cars break. Planes are delayed. Baggage is lost. Friends let you down. Investments crash. It’s inevitable that we are going to meet these kinds of experiences over the course of our lives. And while you may not always be in control of your circumstances (A.K.A. what you’re experiencing) you are always responsible for how you experience your experiences. When we spend our days blaming people or circumstances for our funky vibes and bad moods, we’re giving away our power. When we take back the responsibility for our inner landscape, we are free to choose. In other words, bad things might happen, but we don’t have to feel bad about it. Shitty, sad, frustrating things may happen. But more often than not, you can choose to rise above it. Shrug it off. Smile your way through it. Laugh if you can. Take it with a grain of salt. Zoom out. Take a breath. Because your mood, your vibe and the flavour of your experience are determined by the one and only Y-O-U. Take back ownership of your experience and you realise that your experience is entirely up to you.

This week's location DOMA CAFÉ - FEDERAL Question: What’s better than a wandering drive through the Byron Bay hinterland on a sunshiny day when the cobalt sky sits high above the rolling green hills and you have nowhere to be? Answer: Plotting your course to include a pit stop at Doma Café in Federal. Doma is a 20-minute drive west of Byron Bay in the village of Federal. It’s not hard to miss the café because you’ll see the line-up of visiting cars parked out front. If you’re visiting Doma for lunch on the weekend, follow your ears too, because you’ll probably hear the chilled sounds of live music. Doma is open seven days a week and serves Breakfast and Lunch from 7.30am - 2.30pm. While the menu is predominantly Japanese, there are some excellent alternatives if sushi and sashimi aren’t your thing. My favourite way to eat at Doma is to snap up some premade sushi and order some edamame to snack on while waiting for Hand Rolls to be made fresh to order. The salads are also delicious – like the Yuzu peppered Sear Beef Fillet with Green Salad and Ponzu. If you’re just not into Japanese food you won’t be disappointed as Doma also makes some of the finest hamburgers you will taste. Their hot chips served with smoked paprika aioli are just as good. If that’s not enough to sate you for the rest of your wandering drive there are some dessert offerings in the sweets cabinet and the coffee machine runs hot all day.

The countdown has come and gone, the sparklers all faded and the lights have been blown out on the year that was. It’s a new dawn and the pages a new calendar are smouldering with the potential of an un-lived future. January is a time for renewal. It’s also a time to indulge our fresh start fetishism with aspirations, resolutions and new habits. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be leveraging the renewed energy and optimism of the proverbial clean slate to create new habits. Simple habits that make life better. This week - some tips to get you moving!

EXERCISE CHAIN . Wondering how to get the ball rolling? One of the simplest ways is to create an "exercise chain.“ All you need is a calendar. Make a pact to exercise every day for the month of January. As you do, put an X through each day. The challenge? Don’t break the chain. Why is it so effective? As the chain (your measure of progress) grows, it becomes harder and harder to break (nobody likes to ruin a good inning.)

• GET A PERSONAL TRAINER (not just a shameless plug) or Join a Group It’s easy to fall off the wagon when you’re going it alone. If you join a local fitness group or enlist a personal trainer, you’ll have others that will hold you accountable. As Gretchen Rubin, author and happiness expert says. “A lot of people are feeling a real money crunch right now, but exercise is a high life priority, so if you can afford it [a personal trainer], this is a place to spend some money if that helps.” • ALWAYS EXERCISE ON MONDAY. This sets the psychological pattern for the week (Tues - Sun are more likely to follow suit.) • SMALL CHANGES AND A LITTLE VARIETY will keep your routine fresh – get an inspiring playlist and change it often, run in beautiful locations (à la anywhere in Byron), trial different studios and styles of classes. • NEVER UNDERESTIMATE LAYING YOUR GYM GEAR OUT the night before (as the saying goes, failing to plan is planning to fail.) Tune in next week for more inspiration in creating your best year yet.

PLASTIC FREE Mermaid

sexy choices, sexy body, sexy oceans With Kate Nelson

In 2018, take your sustainability to the next level. Here are a few suggestions, no matter what stage you are at.

ULTRA BEGINNER

• At the grocery store, use the paper mushroom bag for your loose produce instead of plastic bags. • If you forget reusable bags, try to find an empty cardboard box in the store and take it to the checkout for all of your goods.

BEGINNER

• Set yourself up with some epic reusables that you really love and will actually use (drink bottle, coffee cup, bag, lunch container, cutlery, smoothie jar.) • Diversify your shopping centres. Discover the local farmers markets, support handmade food products and find the closest bulk foods store.

INTERMEDIATE

• Start replacing plastic wrapped products with homemade products. • Make your own toothpaste. 1/2 part coconut oil + 1/2 part bicarb soda (option to add a drop or three of mint essential oil; use less bicarb for sensitive teeth/gums.)

ADVANCED

• Go tour your local recycling centre and learn the do's and don’ts for separating out your recyclables. The more you know, the better you can participate in the waste systems in place. • Spread the word. Make it easy for others to begin their journey by leading with a positive and inspiring example. No one likes getting told what to do, so be kind and supportive instead of pushy and bossy.

Q&A A Q U IC K C H

A T W IT H .. .

Tommy Franklin @TOMMYFRANKLINSMILES

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT HELLO SUNDAY MORNING AND HOW YOU CAME TO BE AN AMBASSADOR? Hello Sunday

Morning helps people with their relationship with alcohol. They are a global non-profit organisation that ultimately encourages people not to get absolutely buckled and to say hello to Sunday morning! I met the CEO through mutual friends many years ago before my beard came into bloom. They saw that I had been promoting healthy living and responsible partying. It is a match made in heaven.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT HOSTING A HELLO SUNDAY MORNING EVENT IN BYRON? Well, Byron is the 1st on this tour so I'm sure it is going to be amazing as I have a lot of chosen family that I've missed because I moved down south.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MUSIC GENRE? Depends on the

time or mood I'm in. Usually anything that tickles my funny bone. I tend to go for stuff that's silky sexy and smooth to my senses.

BEST TUNE TO GET A D FLOOR STARTED? Shooting Stars by Bag Raiders

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE DANCING MOMENT SO FAR? I was the face of Barcelona Beach

Festival a 40,000 sold out event on the beach last year. I shared a dance with Nicole Kidman once though I have also seen liberty hit people whilst leading community dance workshops with grandparents, grand kids and everyone else in between. You can't compare these things, they have all been so memorable. Tommy will be hosting a dance party at Apex Park, Byron Bay, on Saturday 13th Jan from 10am-11am.
