the Brewery is the place to be this week, starting with a Charlie Pickering standup gig on Thursday night. Making good on his promise to return to Byron after cancelling his sold-out show last month, the former cohost of The Project will be bringing the LOLs from 8pm; tickets $25. On Friday, local muso Nick Cunningham will be playing tracks from his second studio EP (recorded in Byron), In Between. Joined by local guests Tay Oskee, Chris Mellross and more, the free show kicks off at 7:30pm.

Next Tuesday, SAE launches its three-day ‘summer series’ program. Aimed at people aged over 15 who are thinking about studying creative media, the course will assist attendees in building a creative piece of work for use in a portfolio or a showreel. There’s another chance to get creative on Wednesday with local artist Lauren Campbell of Sit Still Lauren Ceramics, who will be hosting two workshops at the Hotel Brunswick; at 9am for three- to eight-year- olds, and at 10am for eight years and over, with gold coin entry. Both slots were booked at press time, so contact the pub to check for cancellations.

In relation to my career and personal passion for fitness, my relationship with food has always been quite simple. For as long as I can remember I have treated food as a source of fuel for my health, gaining joy from cooking simple and clean meals. For the last 4 years I have eaten a high protein based diet that has massively benefited my mental and overall health. Here is my favourite, embarrassingly simple, protein based, veggie filled dinner. Enjoy x!
• Preheat oven to 180 °C • Place all chopped veggies into a large bowl add oil and seasonings and toss generously • Spread all veggies and seasoning onto a large non stick pan • Cover with foil and bake for 12 minutes • Remove from oven, place your diced chicken onto the pan and gently stir together • Place in the oven for 10 minutes.
Remove the foil and place back in for a remaining 5 minutes or until golden brown and VOILA!

DEAR KEENWA, Just wondering if you know who invented School Holidays? Name and address please, I have some feedback I'd like to pass on in person. My kids' lives depend on it. - Anonymous
DEAR ANONYMOUS, School hols are so 1912. They were originally invented pre-single parenting days, obvs, so that children could toil in the fields during harvest, with school hours beginning four hours after they bloody wake up and knocking off early for the same reason. Even if you don't have a farm, me thinks you have full permission to fill holidays with lots of toil. For those born after the 19th century, that translates as chores. My vote goes to year round education that's more in line with the reality of our daily lives, with each family booking annual leave. Or not. Depends how they go with those chores.
DEAR KEENWA, My baby dadda and I unfortunately don't speak, but I do co-parent with his new girlfriend, her mother, my boyfriend's folks, and my ex's first ex-partner, but we had trouble reaching a consensus on my son's next hairdo. He wanted to shave it which I'm down with, but the other parents couldn’t agree. He did it anyway. To punish or not to punish? Close Shave
DEAR CLOSE SHAVE, I think as long as your son knows he is the centre of nine adults' worlds, and that his self-expression is way more of a priority than boring things such as boundaries and discipline, that you can high-five yourself for decent parenting. Can I ask though, were the clippers fair-trade? Was his first snack post-shave a fermented paleo superfood? Did he have a sacred ceremony for the parts of his soul he shed in each shaved hair, individually?
Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST
THIS WEEK THE ASTROLOGICAL FLAVOUR
changes distinctively when first Venus (on Thursday) and then the Sun (on Saturday) move into innovative Aquarius. Some of the challenges of the last few weeks might just disappear magically into thin air, as a fresh wind blows away old cobwebs and makes room for the new. During the weekend the Moon travels through Pisces, which is the perfect time to immerse yourself into a unique creative project. Especially on Sunday or Monday you might feel extra sensitive; it may be very soothing for your soul to seek out your favourite nature spot to recharge your batteries and maybe get lost in daydreams. Monday is also a very opportune day for a healing session; la Luna teams up with Chiron, the wounded healer. A Pluto/ Mercury conjunction is approaching and might send some minds into an intensely overwhelmed state. Watch out for impulsive, knee-jerk reactions on Tuesday or Wednesday and don’t insist on being right either. These two days harbour the potential of great conflicts. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES
With the Princess of Swords drawn you might find yourself in a rebellious mood this week. You may feel fired up to defend your personal freedom. Take special care on Tuesday and Wednesday and breathe deeply before you react to any real or imagined encroachment to your independence.
h TAURUS
The 9 of Disks represents refinement, comfort and style. Now that you rest assured that your basic needs are well taken care of, you can graciously make time and space to accept the finer things in life. For some folks this might mean shopping for nice stuff, for others it’s more about enjoying the moment and being at peace.
i GEMINI
The 10 of Wands indicates that you have been overextending yourself; maybe you have been working too hard or shouldering the burdens of others. It is up to you to release yourself from oppressive situations and liberate your mind from thought patterns that repress your own needs; no one else will!
j CANCER
With the Knight of Wands drawn you are ready to throw all caution to the wind and take a leap of faith. Chances are that you land on your feet and are rewarded by great opportunities. Your courage and confident ‘can-do’ attitude make great things happen, seemingly out of the blue.
BY GISELA
k LEO
The Ace of Wands symbolises a great fiery energy that needs to be directed and funnelled into positive action, otherwise it possesses the destructive power of a volcanic eruption. A physical workout might help you to release some pentup energy, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday.
l VIRGO
The Emperor Tarot card emphasises vision, foresight and leadership. This week you might be challenged to assert your independence, trust your inner knowing and take things into your own hands. Follow your hunches and you may be able to lay solid foundations for something new and great.
a LIBRA
With the Princess of Cups drawn and your natural sensitivity to your environment, this week you are particularly drawn to spend time in relaxed communication with Mother Earth and her flowing waterways. Stay away from noisy places or people and rather seek out some gentle folks for refined conversations and musings.
b SCORPIO
When the Tower Tarot card appears a situation that is out of your control might bring much upheaval into your life. Deep inside you might realise that there is no choice but surrender to what is, however your ego is not quite ready to totally give in yet. Your resistance makes things worse…
c SAGITTARIUS
The Ace of Swords cuts through confusion and doubt; this week clarity is the big gift that you can bring to any conversation and even to your own internal dialogue. You might even have a big ‘aha’ moment if you slow down enough to listen attentively to what you are perceiving and communicating. Your inner witness is your greatest teacher.
d CAPRICORN
The Hierophant is the archetype that facilitates teaching, counselling and consulting. Under his guidance you may explore ways to walk the mystical path with practical feet, and how to teach what you know. Your deeply philosophical nature makes conversations with you very inspiring for others.
e AQUARIUS
The Wheel of Fortune symbolises a peak experience or breakthrough. Suddenly things start to fall into place and it looks like ‘Lady Luck’ is with you. In reality you have been working on the fulfilment of your personal visions for a while and they are now starting to manifest right in front of your eyes.
f PISCES
The Star Tarot card nudges you to trust yourself and allow the full you to be seen. In your fullness other people recognise and appreciate you much more than when you hide in doubt and self-depreciation. When you shine you possess a natural charisma and magnetism that attracts what you desire.

This week's mantra IN PURSUIT OF LESS. As a culture, we’re pretty obsessed with MORE. More food. More followers. Doing more work so we can get more things. Filling our closets to the brim, jamming up our inboxes with sale emails, packing our days with more than we can get done, setting more goals, padding our calendars with friendships that are more filler than fun. We are full steam ahead in pursuit of more. It’s easy to get caught up in the momentum of more. That’s the dream we’ve been sold. More is marketed to us everyday. We’re accumulation ninjas, trained in excess, experts at avoiding emptiness. If we keep filling up our bellies, closets and calendars, we don’t have to actually feel the emptiness. Emptiness can feel like uncertainty, vulnerability, and loneliness. Emptiness asks us tough questions. Like, “What do you really want?” That’s hard to answer because in becoming expert consumer-accumulators, we’ve numbed our sense of discernment. We’ve lost the ability to define what our style is, what we’re hungry for, what kind of friends we want, or what we desire. We can’t decide what we actually want. But maybe what we really need is…LESS. Less gives us more freedom, focus and clarity. There’s nothing to distract, muddy or cover over the essence of your feelings, desires, truth, or style. What if we spent a little time untangling ourselves from the web of excess, pulling out the weeds so there is more room for the things we truly love to take root and bloom? I’m not saying go live in an ashram. I‘m saying, define your desires and let your desires define your choices. And that starts with giving up on MORE and going in pursuit of LESS.

This week's location TULLY’S - SUFFOLK PARK Tully’s in Suffolk Park is a little over one year old and is a much-needed addition to breakfast and lunch options for the southern end of Byron Bay. Tucked away in the rear of the Suffolk Park Shopping Centre, if you didn’t know Tully’s existed, you might just miss it. It’s definitely a locals’ hang with regulars calling by for their daily brew or something to eat seven days a week. But Tully’s also has great appeal for holidaymakers staying in beachside Suffolk where healthy and wholesome café fare is a bit slim. The menu at Tully’s is nice and neat. It’s about quality and good variety rather than having too many scattered menu options and that’s something I really enjoy in a café. For brunch, served from 7.00am – 1.00pm, there are Zucchini and Pea Fritters, Super Breaky Bowls and Pancakes for sweet tooths. There are also croissants and pastries and takeaway salads for your lunch needs in the glass cabinet. The coffee at Tully’s is by Moonshine Roasters from Mullumbimby. From 5:30pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights Tully’s serves dinner and bar style food with substantial eats like Beef Cheeks through to bar snacks like Mac and Cheese Croquettes and Asian Chicken wings. There are always changing specials on the menu to keep you on your toes and coming back for more. They do great burgers and tacos! Tully’s is licensed and offers regular Happy Hour and Cocktail specials on the weekend as well. It’s a great spot to enjoy the sea breeze with an end of day drink or two with some solid eats.

The sun has set on 2017. It’s a new dawn and the pages a new calendar are smouldering with the potential of an un-lived future. January is a time for renewal. It’s also a time to indulge our fresh start fetishism with aspirations, resolutions and new habits. Over the last weeks, we’ve been leveraging the renewed energy and optimism of the proverbial clean slate to create new habits. Simple habits that make life better. Welcome to the final instalment:
SMILE (INTO CHALLENGES) Prompted by the pseudo-
orgasmic grin trademarked by one of my clients. It usually shows up when she’s mid squat jump & hold. I bought this to her attention one session. She told me it was something she’d picked up in her birthing class. Apparently smiling releases endorphins + dopamine, chemicals that relax the entire body (yep, even a half smile or a forced grin). Those micro muscles in the cheeks send a message to the nervous system that - all is well. Helpful in labour. Helpful in life. She uses it in her workouts. I’m experimenting with it in daily life. Smiling into chores, the blazing heat, my wandering mind, the deadlines, to do lists, family frictions. So far… I’m all smiles.
RELAX ON IMPERFECTION Memorise this mantra “Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.” Instead of shooting for impossible standards and ending up with perfection paralysis, get Wabi-Sabi with life. Embrace imperfections and reframe your ideas and expectations around what’s good enough. Align your thoughts to the following. The twenty-minute jog that I do is better than the 10k run that I don’t do. The imperfect blog post that gets published is better than the perfect one that never leaves my desktop. The 15mins of yoga I practice at home is better than the 2 hour class I don’t attend. There you have it folks. The final installment in this 5 week Holiday Thrive Guide. Whether you take up some of these these suggestions or not, may your year be golden! Because #ItsNiceToBeAlive

PLASTIC FREE Mermaid
sexy choices, sexy body, sexy oceans With Kate Nelson
MAKE YOUR OWN BEESWAX WRAPS Replace plastic glad
wrap with reusable all natural beeswax wraps. The wax helps the small fabric squares wrap and stick around any bowl, container or vegetable. Just rinse under cold water and wash with gentle, natural soap after use. Avoid storing them in direct sunlight or they might melt.
YOU NEED:
• Small squares of thin fabric (bed sheet thickness) • Iron • Biodegradable baking paper • Grated beeswax from your local beekeeper (grate into flakes using an old cheese grater)
METHOD:
• Place an old towel on top of a table. The towel could get wax melted onto it, so don’t use your favorite one. • Spread out baking paper onto the towel. • Lay a fabric square onto the paper. Ideally start with squares no bigger than the width of the baking paper to avoid wax seeping out onto the towel. • Sprinkle the beeswax flakes on top of the fabric square like you are sprinkling cheese on a pizza. • Place a second sheet of baking paper on top. • Press the hot iron on top of the baking paper to slowly melt the wax. Smoothly ironing over all the wax flakes, allowing the hot wax to seep through and saturate the fabric square. • If there are any dry patches, try to move wax under the sheet with the iron, or sprinkle more wax flakes. • Peel off the baking paper, cut or break off the excess wax from the edges and it should practically dry in your hands. If not, hang dry on the line. Watch a video tutorial on my YouTube Channel. Search: Plastic Free Mermaid

Andrew McDonald, Director @LONEGOATGALLERY
WHAT IS THE VISION BEHIND LONE GOAT GALLERY? We aim
to be the premier community art space in the Shire, exhibiting and celebrating the diversity of established and emerging artists from the Byron region & beyond.
WHAT INSPIRED THE NAME LONE GOAT GALLERY? The
gallery is named for the last wily feral goat roaming the cliffs under the Byron Bay lighthouse, evading capture for years and disappearing under mysterious circumstances a couple of years back.
YOU RUN A SERIES OF EXHIBITIONS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THESE? In 2018 the Lone
Goat will stage 12 monthly exhibitions, with artist talks and workshops. We have also just started an offsite curated project programming invited artists onto the walls of Top Shop.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST INTERESTING PIECE OF ART THAT YOU HAVE EXHIBITED? Monkey Monkey Shake
Shake – a grizzly bear and a fish walk into a gallery and start riot of NeoDada-K-Pop-punk combining music, costume, dance, comedy, animation and film.
IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH THREE FAMOUS ARTISTS DEAD OR ALIVE WHO WOULD THEY BE? Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Vivienne Westwood.
WHAT’S ON RIGHT NOW? Upcycled - A survey of works
by Lindy Lynch 2005 - 2018. Lindy mixes folk craft, abstraction, cubism and psychedelia created from discarded and disassembled materials sourced from the refuse of a commercial, consumer, throwaway world. The gallery is currently seeking applications for their 2018 program. Apply via www.lonegoatgallery.com
