DEAR KEENWA, I had planned an Australia flag-themed beach barbie for the Hottest 100 this week, then found out the date had been changed, wtf? Will all the appropriate paraphernalia still be available at the $2 store you reckon? The beer tastes better in a southern cross cooler. - You Beaut
DEAR YOU BEAUT, Yes, they changed the date of the countdown to the day after Australia Day, so as long as you prepurchase and are able to contain your excitement for an extra 24 hours, it should be all good in the hood. Or... you could consider changing the theme of your shindig to one of invasion and massacres, I reckon XXXX would taste just as good, if not better in a skull stubbie holder, and can you imagine blowing up the barbecue when the chart hits number one for the party finale? It would go down in history as a day not to forget.

DEAR KEENWA, What do you know about dreams? I keep having a recurring one where I'm cheating on my wife. Should I be worried? Do you think she knows, you know what women are like? - Snore Thang
DEAR SNORE THANG, It does kind of fall under the so hot right now micro-cheating category, of messaging someone that is not your partner, and not revealing you have a partnership in that conversation. But since Freud and Jung were pre world wide web, I think they'd probably ask you to look at the person you're making out with (during waking hours if possible), and decide which of their qualities it is that you are attracted to. They are most likely attributes you would like to develop in your own life that may be emerging. Once you role out those qualities in your own life, you will be able to make out with yourself, and therefore pull the pin on your galactic affair.

MERCURY
THE
PLANET
FOR
communication, the intellect and travel, has a really busy time this week and your mind might feel over-loaded by facts or by the pace things are moving at. On Thursday morning Mercury unites with Pluto in Capricorn; the focus is on strategy and the overall energy is restrained but very powerful. It intensifies the thought process and may lead to extraordinary conversations or business meetings. By the evening a Mercury/Jupiter sextile might grace us with an ‘aha’ moment and some may feel they discover a missing piece of their life-puzzle. The weekend is perfect for a small trip; on Saturday Mars moves into Sagittarius, the sign of the travel expert and adventurer; on Sunday a Mercury/Uranus square urges us to explore new things beyond our normal routine and to venture into the unknown. If you feel mentally exhausted, book in for a healing session for Sunday or Monday to relax mind, body and soul. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

With the Queen of Swords drawn you are getting to the heart of any matter straight away and you don’t have much time for niceties. Your honest and astute attitude is appreciated by most of your friends and family. Be a bit careful with people who don’t know you so well; they might feel offended easily.
h TAURUS
The 9 of Cups is often called the ‘wish card’ and many blessings may be in stock for you this week! Dive deeply into the longings of your heart and allow yourself to feel as if they are already fulfilled. Recall this feeling often and you are on your way… This is also a wonderful week for the meeting of hearts if romance is on your mind.
i GEMINI
The Queen of Cups longs for retreat and the peace that meditation brings. This week you may seek deep communication with Mother Nature and, strangely enough, right now you find this much more satisfying than socialising and spending time in busy and noisy places. Allow yourself time out as much as possible.
j CANCER
The Princess of Wands holds the banner of freedom and liberation. This week you may feel upbeat and optimistic; you are in an adventurous mood and ready to jump whole-heartedly into new experiences. You may overcome some old fears or reservations and when you look back you might wonder what took you so long…
BY GISELA
k LEO
The World Tarot card symbolises your desire to explore the new; it may involve travel but it may also indicate great inner work. You might develop an awareness of tensions, oppositions and paradoxes within you and as you renegotiate your inner worlds you become more free and individuated, and also less reactive to what happens around you.
l VIRGO
The 3 of Disks indicates a concentrated effort of body, mind and spirit, and the wonderful results and clarity that are possible because of this alignment. If you are lacking energy right now and can’t commit yourself whole-heartedly to a course of action, work on your inner equilibrium first; this allows you to move from doubt to certainty.
a LIBRA
The Wheel of Fortune symbolises luck, prosperity and expansion. This week might bring many opportunities because you are at the right place, at the right time and you are able to make important connections. Don’t hesitate, seize the moment!
b SCORPIO
The Ace of Swords assists you with great clarity and willpower to stay on your path through this quite mental week. You won’t be sidetracked by the confusion or doubt of others, and your awareness and honesty might help resolve a complicated situation in your family or with a business decision.
c SAGITTARIUS
This ‘mental as anything’ week in combination with the 5 of Disks drawn keeps your mind too busy and hooked on various worst-case scenarios. These only create insecurity and worries, while they drain your energy because you concentrate on the past and project probable negative future scenarios. Sit back, breathe deeply and come back to the here and now, which most likely is not so bad!
d CAPRICORN
The 3 of Cups promises a cornucopia of good feelings that you lovingly share. This is a great week for a family get-together; business meetings or networking projects also turn out exceptionally well. Your enthusiasm and optimistic outlook inspire others and nurture true team-spirit.
e AQUARIUS
With the 9 of Swords drawn your mind might be stuck in a self-critical mode which has a ‘wet blanket’ effect on everything you encounter. Have an open conversation with a friend about it and ask them for feedback. You might be surprised by what they say… Let it in and let it settle; it might help you to love yourself more unconditionally.
f PISCES
The Strength Tarot card symbolises renewed passion and zest for life. You might find much joy and fulfilment in tapping into your creative potential; it increases your love of life and also your lovelife. Trust yourself enough to express your individuality to the fullest.

WE LOVE TOURISTS IN BYRON – ANONYMOUS Byron is a tourist town attracting more than 2 million visitors every year. And we all can see why. For those of us that choose to live here, this is part of the deal. We need to share our town with those wanting to experience Byron Bay. I respect this. Tourism is what makes for successful business and it creates entrepreneurship and employment opportunity. So, dare I say, I love the tourists. Stop the complaining, go the long (locals short cut) way around town, venture to new shopping spots and embrace what the tourists bring us.
WATCH OUT, BLUEBOTTLES ARE OUT – YVONNE PATTERSON It’s that time of year again. The northerly winds appear and so do the bluebottles. I was stung the other day at The Pass whilst having a leisurely dip. Gosh it stung. Don’t fear though, a sting form the dominant species in Australian waters is fairly uneventful and will usually subside in 30 minutes. Here are some tips if you do get stung though Do not rub the sting area, remove the stinging cells from the skin by washing off tentacles with seawater or picking them off and immerse the sting in hot water or apply ice to help with the pain.
Congrats Yvonne

This week's mantra BE DEVOTED. SURRENDER THE RESULTS. You can control your actions, you can't control the outcomes. You can invest in your actions, but not in the outcome of your actions. Because there’s an aspect to life that's not up to you. Thinking that it IS is striving. And striving isn’t spiritual. Striving is ego. Striving is is pushing for specific outcomes at any cost, rather than focusing on the integrity of your actions. So in this world where we've been taught to hustle for results, what do we do instead of focusing on outcomes? Step 1: form an intention. Step 2: be devoted in your actions. Devoted action arises not from a place of lack but out of a desire to do better, to be better. Acts of devotion are infused with intention and carried out with integrity, reverence and respect. Devoted action prioritizes the present. You focus on what you can do today, rather than what might happen someday. You champion this moment over what comes next. You empower yourself to be as intentional and clear as you can be - right this minute. And then the results come. The outcomes are delivered in flow. Or not. Because sometimes thems the breaks. Which brings us to Step 3: Surrender the results. Sometimes the outcome is unexpected. Sometimes the goal isn’t achieved. Sometimes things go pear-shaped. But when we have been devoted in our actions, we can surrender to the co-creation of our life and accept the outcomes with grace, gratitude and trust, knowing that we have done our part with integrity and intention. So let your actions be the rudder of your soul. And when the tide sweeps you in another direction, trust that there is some divine wisdom in the charting of your journey. Be devoted. Surrender the results.

This week's location FINN POKÉ - BYRON BAY So, what is a Poké Bowl? ‘Poké’ is the Hawaiian name for diced and marinated raw fish. In times past, fisherman would eat ‘poké’ or which was the raw offcuts of their catch, seasoned with salt and seaweed. Today’s Poké Bowls are a modern version of this fisherman’s staple and generally feature raw fish and vegetables and the Japanese influence of rice, soy and sesame . At Finn Poké on Fletcher Street in Byron Bay it’s all about Poké Bowls. There are two ways to order - you can choose from the Signature Bowl or Craft Your Own Bowl menus. My advice is to stick with the Signature Bowl menu initially, so as not to come unstuck combining a mish mash of flavours that don’t work together. Each Signature Bowl starts with a base – you choose from rice, buckwheat noodles or citrus Kale salad. From there, Finn Poké has curated a menu that includes The Big Katuna - featuring local tuna, roasted nori, pickled ginger, wakame salad, crispy onion and a shoyu dressing of soy, honey and sesame oil. This is great served with buckwheat noodles. The King is also a delicious flavour curation featuring kingfish, jalapeno, pineapple, pickled ginger, coriander, crispy onion and a spicy yuzu citrus dressing. For vegetarians, there is The Vego bowl, which features tofu, or Dr Beet with a roasted beetroot and orange salad. Finn Poké is open seven days for lunch and dinner and you can dine in or take away,

PLASTIC FREE Mermaid
sexy choices, sexy body, sexy oceans With Kate Nelson
DIY SUNSCREEN Sunny days are the best days! Slap
on a wide-brimmed hat. Slip on some light clothing and hide under all the awnings and umbrellas. As for the slopping, many sunscreens contain harsh chemicals that are bad for the oceans, the sea creatures, and also our body. (Avoid these 3 ingredients: Oxybenzone, Retinyl Palmitate, and Paraben Preservatives.) The slop also comes packaged in plastic containers that could leach chemicals into the slop. Plus the bottle will take 500-1000 years to break down. We can create less waste by making our own sunscreen.
INGREDIENTS: • • •
Small jar or metal tin 3/4 Cup Shea Butter (3-6 SPF) 4 Tablespoons Coconut Oil (2-8 SPF) or Olive Oil (2-8 SPF) • 2 Tablespoons Vitamin E Oil: Natural Preservative helps prevent UV Damage • 1/4 Cup or 2 oz Zinc Oxide (20+ SPF) *For thicker, stronger Face Zinc, substitute out the 1/4 Cup of Butter for 1/4 Cup Beeswax (15 SPF)
COOL FACT: Carrot Seed and Raspberry Seed oils have SPF around 30-40! Add into your face oils or sunscreens for added protection.
METHOD:
In a heat safe bowl on top of simmering pot of water melt the butter and wax. Then stir in the oils. Let cool for 2-3 minutes. Carefully stir in the zinc oxide. Pour into your jar and let set overnight. Enjoy your reef safe, Mermaid-approved, Sunny Day Slop

Some of my fondest memories growing up in Hawaii are of gathering and devouring fresh tropical fruits on the beach pre and post surfs. Mango, banana, and coconut are my favs, combining them with fresh lime and crunchy macadamia nuts is nutritious and so delicious or as we say in Hawaii Ono’licious! As well as giving you a super energy boost the ingredients for my mango slide smoothie are grown locally here in Byron Bay area and can be bought direct from farmers when in season

Q&A A Q U IC K C H
A T W IT H .. .
Dave Thew and Chris Wright @WAVEOFTHEDAY_SURFTRAVEL
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE WAVE OF THE DAY? A love for surf, travel and the struggle to find the best surf deals all in one place.
HOW DOES IT WORK? Sign up to the newsletter, follow us on social media and we will hook you up with discount surf travel. It’s that easy!
WHAT MAKES A GREAT SURF TRIP? Good waves, good food, good company and maybe a beer or two.
WHAT ARE THE THREE MOST ESSENTIAL ITEMS TO TAKE ON A SURF TRIP? We have a pretty funny blog coming out on this. All we can say is zip ties, Vaseline and reusable shopping bags.
WHEN’S THE BEST TIME OF YEAR FOR GOOD DEALS ON SURF TRIPS? It’s all dependent on the region. We always recommend getting in early, however sometimes if you see a swell coming and want to do a quick strike mission you can snag a great last minute special!
IF YOU COULD BE ON A SURF TRIP WITH ANYONE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD IT BE? Chris - Yvon Chouinard, The
founder of Patagonia. I almost said Andy Irons but then I wouldn’t get any waves. Yvon is a super interesting bloke, would love to learn a thing or two from him and about how he founded such a great ethical company. Dave - Bob Mctavish, because he’s Bob Mctavish.
FAVE OVERSEAS WAVE? Chris - Rio Nexpa or Ibrahams in
the Mentawais (not its real name, my captain was called Ibraham). Dave - Desert Point. (Except when I’m in the lip going over the falls.) For more information and to sign up for the mailing list visit www.waveoftheday.com.au
