Tuesday provides a flashback to music festivals circa 2000 (for me, anyway) with San Diego outfit Unwritten Law set to perform The Black Album in full at The Northern (doors from 7pm). Amazingly, there were still tickets available at press time ($40; thenorthern.com.au). Valentines Day rolls around on Wednesday, and what better way to celebrate than join a flash mob? Don a red outfit and be at Main Beach by 6:30am for the gathering in support of One Billion Rising, a campaign to end the exploitation of women. The Balcony is also running a great V-Day initiative; head to atabletoendhunger.org.au to bid on a $200 dinner, with funds raised supporting The Hunger Project Australia. Cheers to that.

DEAR KEENWA, I'm a spiritual life coach, and participate in prayer, ceremony and devotional offerings on a daily basis, both for myself and with my clients for the good of the entire planet. Whenever I arrive home from a particularly deep practice, I want to share it with my partner who actually has no interest in these matters. We are twin flames, but are we destined for failure? - Love and Light

DEAR LOVE AND LIGHT, In Gabby Bernstein's new book Judgement Detox she recommends six days of activities to combat judgement which I think would be perfect for a spiritual elitist like yourself, some of which I have just had to use when thinking of you force feeding us, and anything else that will listen, ten days of your most innermost thoughts. I bet you're also vegan? Oh, give me a minute it seems I need more practice.

DEAR KEENWA, My youngest son started pre-school this year, and after twelve years of being a stay at home mama I was envisioning cafe lunches and daytime spa treatments, but when I try to leave him he screams blue murder which has me spending the rest of the day in tears, riddled with guilt. Am I a selfish mum, forming a future ax murderer? - Attached To Freedom

DEAR ATTACHED TO FREEDOM, When I was four, my own mother tried to pull that shit on me. I nailed the meltdown of the century which worked a treat, as she never made me return. My mum's message was loud and clear, and she confirmed what I was fearing, that the world is a scary, loud, place. Now I spend my waking hours fantasising about living in a cave, with a candle for company whilst sitting at home all week talking to my computer, and writing about resilience. You dig?

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

ON THURSDAY MORNING THE MOON

in Scorpio unites with Jupiter; the emotional tide is high and this would be the perfect day for a regenerative massage or any other healing session. If you experience inner tension don’t isolate yourself, rather reach out to a friend. Sunday marks Venus’ ingress into Pisces, where she resides until early March. She is very attuned to the vibes of others and a beautiful, natural environment gets her creative-intuitive juices flowing. There also might be escapist tendencies; she is just too sensitive for a rat-race world. Valentine’s Day on Tuesday is a mixed bag; Sun, Moon and Mercury are in friendly but rather detached and unpredictable Aquarius. A Mercury/Jupiter square inflates internal conflict and may lead to over-thinking or rash decisions that might be followed by regret. Connect with your feelings and use your intuition, rather than trying to work things out with your intellect. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

The 6 of Disks promises success; you are able to tap into your inner knowing and resourcefulness which gives you great confidence to navigate this week and create positive outcomes. You might feel inspired to share your expertise and you make a great advisor or mentor. Just wait for someone to ask you for advice; don’t offer it unsolicited.

h TAURUS

With the World Tarot card you have the power & drive to build new worlds. You are entering an extremely productive, creative and innovative phase of your life. This is the time when dreams can come true and heart desires get fulfilled, mainly because your mind is open to new possibilities and realities, rather than clinging to the past as the only point of reference.

i GEMINI

The 8 of Swords indicates overwhelming mental pressure. Doubt and confusion are predominant and over-analysing your situation does not bring you closer to a satisfying solution. It is best to wait things out for a while and observe closely how you feel. If a thought or idea brings you relief, it is a great indication for being on the right track.

j CANCER

The 10 of Swords represents depleted energy levels, caused by repetitive, negative thought-patterns which have a wet blanket effect on your overall experience. Being self-depreciating or feeling like a martyr only keeps you trapped there. With mental discipline you can adopt the attitude of gratitude for the things that are working out for you. One thought at a time you feel a little better and able to cope.

BY GISELA

k LEO

With the Sun Tarot card drawn the world is your oyster this week. Your creativity and productivity are enhanced, and you shine your light forth brilliantly. Relationships are warm and friendly, and your ability to contribute to collaborative efforts is greatly appreciated. This is also the time to enjoy playfulness, unstructured time and the simple pleasures that life has to offer.

l VIRGO

c SAGITTARIUS

The Priestess represents great inner equilibrium and intuition that you can tap into and absolutely trust at any time. You may want to spend quiet time in nature to calm your mind, sense life’s mysteries and get in touch with your own inner voice of knowing. From that place you always make the right decisions!

d CAPRICORN

The Knight of Swords is ready to move forward on a new mission and with renewed passion. This week you may be able to implement the changes that you have been thinking about for a while. Now that your heart, mind and action are aligned, there is nothing that holds you back. Go for it!

May the Lovers Tarot card inspire you to primarily focus on the art and craft of relationships this week! Ponder where you give love, where you receive it gracefully and where it is missing in your life. This may be a transformative process if you contemplate unconditional love towards yourself and others.

a LIBRA

e AQUARIUS

The secrets of the Magician’s creative powers lie in the combination of focus, excellent timing and belief in his abilities. This week’s experience is designed to boost your confidence and realise your creative potential in such a way that you can create magical results, seemingly without much effort.

b SCORPIO

The 4 of Cups indicates that it is time to re-evaluate your situation. Maybe you have been investing a lot of emotional energy into something or someone dear to your heart, but without getting the desired results. It might be time to abandon that which drains your energy, and focus on recharging your batteries.

When the Death Tarot card appears it is time to let go of patterns and behaviour that are out-dated and don’t serve you any longer. Letting go and moving on is the way to avoid more unnecessary pain. Especially if your birthday is between the 11th and 17th of February you may be going through a period of profound change and transformation.

f PISCES

With the Chariot Tarot card drawn you long for change and a new beginning. Maybe you surprise yourself with how much hunger for spiritual/emotional growth you have, which fuels your determination to focus on creating new realities. Don’t let anything or anyone distract you!

This week's review

TITLE: The Desire Map AUTHOR: Danielle LaPorte NUMBER OF PAGES: 288 EST. READ TIME: 6 hours PRICE: $32.99 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Part how-to book, part philosophic-

poetry jam, part journal. The Desire Map is a “guide to creating goals with soul.” The premise is this: we’re a culture that loves setting goals and ticking boxes, but rather than setting external goals, we should start by getting clear about how we want to feel, and then set goals that are aligned with that. This way, we can set goals that are authentic to ourselves, achievable (A.K.A flexible), and value the process as much as the outcome.

WHO IT'S FOR: Anyone who is in a time of transition, feeling a bit lost or wondering what’s next. People looking for clarity but burned out on the “make X number of dollars by X date” kind of goal-setting. People who love a good worksheet or dig journaling. People who like a side of poetry and soul with their goal-setting. Self-help junkies will eat this up. Ambitious types will find value in it to, so long as they are willing to redefine the way they set goals.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Traditional (external)

goal-setting hasn’t been working for you. Warning: if you’re not into worksheets and putting pen to paper, skip this read. Not into feeling your feelings? This book’s not for you.

NOTABLE QUOTE: “The cosmos doesn’t measure sweat

and hours for reward. The cosmos deal in the currency of emotion. When we feel good goodness flows.” This week's review written by Caitlin Nowland.

This week's mantra

INDECISION IS A SYMPTOM OF SELF-DOUBT. Can’t decide if you want to go out or stay in tonight? Find yourself in dressing rooms wondering if those are The Best Jeans Ever or if they’re overpriced 90s momjeans in disguise? Not sure whether you should take that job? Can’t figure out if that guy is Mr. Right, or Mr. Right Now? Have perpetual order-envy when you’re out to dinner?

That, my friend, is indecision in a nutshell. Nail biting, hemming and hawing, to-and-fro’ing, scribbling columns of pros-and-cons. Or worse, begging people (your parents/guru/best friend) to just tell you what to do.

W Q K J X N I C R Q I O L G E

D Y M W F A P G L T I F L M S

Here’s the hard truth: Indecision is a symptom of selfdoubt. And self-doubt is a lack of trust in yourself. You don’t know what you really want. So you make decisions intellectually, randomly or based on what others tell you to do. Then you regret past decisions, so you don’t trust yourself to make “good” decisions anymore. You defer to others, you put things off, you live in a constant state of FOMO, you stay in a weak-sauce relationship ‘cause you’re just not sure. Here’s the way forward. Zoom out on your life and ask yourself this question: How do I want to feel? Get clear on that and all your daily decisions (and the big ones, too) become easy-peasy. You’ll march up to the counter knowing those jeans make you feel like a sartorial superstar and definitely not like you’re heading to carpool pickup. You’ll say no to the corporate gig because you want to feel autonomous and not like a cog in a wheel. You’ll let your feelings light the way to making the right decisions for you. (Pssst…If you need guidance on this, I highly recommend Danielle LaPorte’s book The Desire Map.)

This week's location BEACH - BYRON BAY The view from Beach is one of the best dining rooms in Byron Bay. For breakfast, lunch or dinner seven days a week, it’s postcard panorama perfection. To add to that, Beach is another great supporter local food and beverage producers, and that gets my vote any day.

ADVERTISE HERE 02 6680 7158

The beach breakfast menu covers everything from baked eggs, to French toast and the ‘Salumi Australia’ sausage, portobello mushroom, fried egg, cheese, aioli, leaves, brioche bun. For something light I really love the local raw fish, avocado, cress and grilled toast. The lunch and dinner menu is Italian influenced, but don’t expect any heavy styled dishes. The chargrilled baby octopus and kipfler potato is a great light lunch. For dinner there are solid seafood, steak and pasta options. Local brands feature on the drinks menu at Beach Byron Bay as well, with Stone and Wood, Byron Bay Coffee Company, Bucha of Byron, Ink Gin and Jilly wines listed. The quality wine list at Beach Byron Bay offers an extensive list of premium Australian and international options. Beach has a kiosk out the front, which serves takeaway coffees and small food including Piadinas, Fish and Chips and Pastries. There’s room to sprawl on the lawn or you can sit at a picnic table. The fresh juices are always good after a pilgrimage up to the lighthouse.

PLASTIC FREE Mermaid

sexy choices, sexy body, sexy oceans With Kate Nelson

PLASTIC FREE TRAVEL TIPS - PART ONE Traveling with a low impact can create rewarding and memorable experiences that enrich our trip beyond expectation. Over the next four week’s I will give you some guidance for carrying on without plastics.

CARRY ON PACKING LIST • REUSABLE DRINK BOTTLE: Stainless steel is usually the safest to get through security. • REUSABLE CUP: Sweet talk the flight attendant to fill this with your bevy of choice. • FRUIT: The most delicious treat when traveling. It is easy for fruit to get squashed with the shuffling of things, so I store soft fruits in my reusable cup. • SNACKS IN A JAR: Prepare some healthy, yummy snacks, so you are not tempted by the plasticwrapped ‘food’ they serve on the plane. Most flights allow you food on the plane, just not off the plane. So you can pack fresh fruit, veggies, salad, seeds and nuts, trail mix, bliss balls, etc. • UTENSILS: Bring a spoon and chopsticks in your carry on. It will get you by for any meal. Forks and knives get confiscated at security. • REUSABLE BAG: To carry all of this stuff. Also for when you go to the markets at your destination, so you are not tempted to use a plastic bag. It doesn’t have to be a daggy reusable bag, perhaps even a nice beach bag or a hiking pack that doubles as a giant shopping bag. Stay tuned next week for more useful and easy to implement travel packing hacks.

Q&A A Q U IC K C H

A T W IT H .. .

Ming Nomchong

@MING_NOMCHONG_PHOTOÂ HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START IN PHOTOGRAPHY? I

started assisting back in Sydney and then when I moved up here I started shooting womens surf and then it all kinda rolled out from there.

YOU SHOOT A QUITE A BIT AROUND BYRON. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAV LOCATION? I love shooting at the beach

but I also love finding cool quirky shacks around the shire. I just shot out at my friends place "The Jungle House" for Tree Of Life which was pretty epic, keep an eye out for that one.

WHAT IS YOUR FAV CAMERA TO SHOOT ON? WHY? I shoot

digital for most of my commercial work but I love shooting film. I love my Canon EOS 1N & my new EOS 3 because I can use my current Canon lenses with them. I love the tangibility of film and you just can't beat grain.

YOU ARE ALSO A CO FOUNDER OF SEA BONES, CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR INSPIRATION FOR CREATING THIS SPACE?

We saw a gap in the market and a lack of space and support for local, independent designers creating cool products for women leading salty lives. So Sea Bones was born ~ Remnants of things that belong in or near the Sea ~

AS A BUSINESS OWNER, WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF LIVING IN BYRON BAY? Being surrounded by an epic community of like minded people who work in a collaborative way with each other.

IF YOU COULD PHOTOGRAPH THREE PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY BE? Jimi Hendrix, Jane Birkin and Kate Moss.
