LOVE A GOOD SALE? THERE’S
a big one worth catching this week, with Spell & The Gypsy Collective hosting a warehouse sale at the Bangalow A&I Hall from today until Saturday (10am-4pm daily).
Friday is shaping up to be a busy one, kicking off with a ‘Storytime’ event for families at Habitat’s Barrio restaurant. Come along between 10-11am to enjoy stories and craft activities for children aged two to six years, and a free brekkie! In town, world-renowned environmentalist Paul Hawken and filmmaker Damon Gameau will be discussing Project Drawdown, the most comprehensive plan ever proposed to reverse global warming, at the Beach Hotel from 10.30am. Come along to join the conversation about the collective action we can take right here in the Shire.
OOOOPS!
Last week we published the Unwritten Law gig as being at the Northern. It was actually at the Byron Bay Brewery. For those who picked up the error we apologise and hope you enjoyed the gig.

DEAR KEENWA, I'm a single mum and trying to get on top of my health. My adrenals are shot, my neck is constantly out from being the sole lifter, I'm sleep deprived, have a crappy immune system, and various nutritional deficiencies. My vitamin supplement intake is nearly half my rent per week, and at best I still feel like death warmed up. Is there another way around this or is our “village” destined to live in a vitamin bottle? - Hard To Swallow
DEAR HARD TO SWALLOW, There are plus sides to loss of real tribe when it comes to child-rearing. Like, vitamins don't get drunk and start family feuds or have a hairy top lip that scratches you when they get close to your mouth (although how gnarly is fish oil reflux?). But...solo four walls, being granny, cousin Meg, Aunty Iris and Uncle Bob as well as mum, is a prescription for medication if I ever saw one.

DEAR KEENWA, Valentine's day is about to roll 'round. I'm single, feeling a bit down, but wondering how to do it Byron Style. Do you have some consoling ideas - Eco Heart
DEAR ECO HEART, What I do have is some fun facts about Valentine's to cheer you up. Like did you know that gold jewellery sales generate 34 million tons of mine waste? That red roses emit about 9,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide on this very special day alone? Studies also show an increase in suicide and depression, but it's not all bad news, the condom industry and pregnancy tests see a 20-30% sale increase. Go them! I personally don’t know why we cant go back to the good ol' days when traditionally men would sacrifice a goat and a dog, then whip their women with the hides of the animals they had just slain.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST
FRIDAY’S NEW MOON IN AQUARIUS
inspires innovation, extra quirkiness and really interesting, far-out conversations. This is a partial solar eclipse, but it is not visible for us. On Saturday a Sun/Mercury conjunction combined with a Mars/Neptune square brings even more weird, wonderful and eccentric ideas. This may turn out to be a very mentally and spiritually creative weekend; even though most of what gets conjured up never leaves the realm of phantasy… grounding is in short supply! From Sunday onwards the world feels like a Piscean ocean with Mercury, Venus, Chiron and Neptune in the sign of the intuitive/creative/spiritual seeker and healer. The Sun follows suit on Monday. This is the perfect time for a retreat or vision quest; it might not work in your favour if you have to analyse facts, meet deadlines or work in a very structured environment. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

The Judgement Tarot card together with the current cosmic astro-soup might nudge you into a contemplative and reflective mood. You may look back, acknowledge the past and make an honest appraisal of how far you have come. In your contemplation you may find another piece of the puzzle that reveals your true mission and vocation.
h TAURUS
The 7 of Cups symbolises stagnant emotional energy. You may wish for things to be different but you lack the determination for change, because you would have to face over-indulging or addictive patterns that keep you in your comfort zone. Maybe you could gently start by noticing the real reasons why, how and when you over-do things.
i GEMINI
The 7 of Disks symbolises a certain fear of failure and the limitations you buy into if you adhere to it. Find an inspiring place in nature, relax and allow yourself to reconnect with your passion, mission and vision. As you take stock and question your long-term choices you soon open up to new possibilities and strategies.
j CANCER
The Empress represents the loving wisdom and acceptance of the earth mother; she invokes feminine guidance straight from the heart, regardless of your gender. She enhances your emotional balance and supports your self-nurturing abilities. If you act from this place you won’t over-give, push for certain outcomes or use manipulative tactics.

The Lovers Tarot card signals a great opportunity for connection with the beloved. Take time to refresh your romantic skills and entice your partner in a new way. If you find yourself without a lover this is the perfect time to deepen the connection to yourself and sense the possibility of unconditional acceptance of what you encounter deep within.
With the 4 of Swords drawn you might easily feel mentally overwhelmed by inner or outer conflict. The best remedy is to take time off from your preoccupations in order to rest and recuperate. Once you feel energised and less stressed there is more space to conceive a marvellous idea that instigates negotiation and, if necessary, conflict resolution.
a LIBRA
At the core of the Ace of Cups is an open heart that gifts others with its presence. There is a great ease in relationships when giving and receiving naturally balances out and score cards are not necessary. This week your love and appreciation for humanity beams out into the world like a beacon of light; this is how you inspire others to open up as well.
b SCORPIO
With the Hermit card drawn you might instinctively withdraw into your private cave this week because you find the eccentric, mental buzz all around you rather irritating. You may need a bit of solitude, time for introspection and contemplation. Honour your need for space and don’t compare yourself with others.
With the 5 of Disks drawn you might be caught up in a web of ‘what-if’ scenarios that drag you down and preoccupy your mind so much that you are actually losing touch with your here-and-now reality. The attitude of gratitude for the things that are working out for you, may help you to uplift your spirit and gain a greater perspective.
The 9 of Wands symbolises your indomitable and unstoppable spirit. With your resilience and staying power you can move mountains this week and you might surprise someone with your inner strength and vigour. This, in turn, is invigorating and reassuring for yourself.
e AQUARIUS
With the 10 of Cups drawn for this week, the world is your oyster. You are radiant with well-being and your contentment is soothing and nourishing for everyone that comes in contact with you. You are a delight to be with and a true inspiration to others.
f PISCES
The astro-flavour of this week in combination with the Moon Tarot card drawn promises almost too much mental / emotional stimulation and you might find yourself confused and feeling a bit lost. Not all creative ideas and plans that you hatch right now are realistic, therefore take your time and don’t make any huge decisions yet.

This week's review
TITLE: The Trauma Cleaner AUTHOR: Sarah Krasnostein NUMBER OF PAGES: 304 EST. READ TIME: 6 hours and 10 minutes PRICE: $32.99 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: At first, The Trauma Cleaner, could
be mistaken at face value as the story of Sandra Pankhurst, a cleaner who brings order to crime scenes, hoarders homes and derelict homes. This in itself is interesting enough. However, as the book progresses Krasnostein, reveals that Sandra is not only an eccentric cleaning lady but has been many things in her lifetime: a man, a woman, husband, father, wife, drag queen, sex worker and businesswoman. Through each chapter, Sandra reveals more of herself within unbelievable tales from her full life.
WHO IT'S FOR: Fans of non-fiction and true stories. Men and women. 24 - 50 years of age.
WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: It celebrates the life of a
remarkable Australian. Reading The Trauma Cleaner is like putting together the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, reaching the end and realising you’ve lost a piece under the sofa (in a good way!). Reminding us that as individuals we are all a bit complicated, built from different circumstance and a little incomplete in some way or another. You’ll want to track down Sandra Pankhurst and ask her a million questions about her remarkable life.
NOTABLE QUOTE: “Using words as disinfectants, we
are trauma cleaning. Word by word, sentence by sentence, we are reuniting fragments scattered by chaos to create heat and light. We cannot always eliminate what is bad or broken or lost but we can do our best to put everything in its place, such Order being the true opposite of Trauma” This week's review written by Jessie Hilton.

This week's mantra
TAKE A BREATH BEFORE YOU SAY YES. Let me start by saying that I think that everyone’s primary intention in life should be to be of service. The world needs your gifts. People need the special kind of help that only you can offer. We should all be thinking about how we can give, how we can lift others up, how we can contribute to our communities. But if you’re anything like me, the line between being of service and being a people pleaser can be…blurry. Looking after other people can become tangled up with your sense of self. I’m needed. I’m valued. I’m helpful. That feels good, right? But it can easily teeter off the edge of Service and land squarely in the land of People Pleasing, where your inner DJ might be playing this on repeat: “If I don’t help people, they won’t love me. “If they’re not okay, I’m not okay.” “If I don’t show up for everything, I’m not worth anything.” If that sounds familiar, you might be using your usefulness as a way to validate your ego. If you’re addicted to positive feedback, to being needed, or to taking responsibility for everyone’s feelings all the time, you might have gotten being of service mixed up with servicing your self-esteem. The danger with this is that you lose your ability to discern when being of service to others is actually letting yourself down. (If “no” isn’t in your vocabulary, then I’m lookin’ at you!) Being of service to others shouldn’t cost you your health, your sanity or your ability to care for yourself. Perfectionism disguised as altruism is still perfectionism. For all of us: May we breathe deeply into our bellies before saying “Yes,” and in doing so, be reminded of the difference between being of service and being a people pleaser.

This week's location LUSCIOUS FOODS - BYRON A & I ESTATE I am a big fan of Luscious Foods in the Arts and Industrial Estate for breakfast and lunch. Luscious is one of those places where I can never decide what to have and I think that’s always a good start. The breakfast menu is a blend of typical café fare alongside traditional Middle Eastern dishes. You can enjoy the house made Bircher Muesli or a Bacon and Egg Roll but I always go for something Middle Eastern. Two breakfast dishes you must try are the ‘Shakshuka’ of two eggs poached in a sweet and capsicum and tomato sauce serve with homemade pita bread from the wood fired oven and ‘The Popeye Om’, which is a two-egg omelette made with pesto, spinach, black olives, feta and caramelised onion served with toasted organic sourdough. Lunch time at Luscious gets busy with local workers. There are baguettes, salads, Middle Eastern platters and burgers as well as pizzas and pides from the wood fired oven. The pita pockets are unmissable and for me it’s almost always the ‘Sabieek’ pocket which is a wood fired pita bread filled with housemade mango pickle, hummus, tahini, eggplant, hard-boiled egg and tabouli. Luscious serves all day coffee and freshly squeezed juices, smoothies and drinks from the fridge. For breakfast or lunch Monday to Friday it never fails.

PLASTIC FREE Mermaid
sexy choices, sexy body, sexy oceans With Kate Nelson
PLASTIC FREE TRAVEL TIPS - PART TWO CHECKED BAG PACKING LIST • TUPPERWARE: Store small electronics, cords or
toiletries in a little box or container. When you need to contain a fruit salad, pack a lunch, or take a meal to go, you can avoid disposable plastics with tupperware.
• UTENSILS: Pack fork or knife in checked luggage. If you have one, a Leatherman tool comes in handy. It has a scissors, a few blades, screwdriver, and many other useful parts. A sharp knife is so helpful for slicing fruit. • MINI CHOPPING BLOCK & TOWEL: A small little board & a dish towel ready to wipe everything clean comes in handy. Why not improvise or collect these on the go. • WATER: If you are traveling somewhere where you do not want to drink the water, bring a purifying UV light or filter, so you are not reliant on bottled water. Alternatively, use the kettle at the accommodation to boil and strain tap water. • TOILETRIES: DIY deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner packed in small tight-seal jars. (recipes: iquitplastics.com) You can upcycle old travel containers or product tubes. Bring a bar of soap wrapped in a washcloth or in a jar, dry the cloth when settled. Toothbrush is bamboo. Razor is reusable made of stainless steel. Sun cream is a mix of coco oil, shea butter, and zinc oxide. • DURABLE CLOTHES AND SHOES: Nothing single-use, especially flips flops. If they break, where will you dispose of them properly if there is no recycling where you are going. Good luck, go with positivity, and always do your best. Stay tuned next week for part 3.

Q&A A Q U IC K C H
A T W IT H .. .
Mat McHugh
@THEBEAUTIFULGIRLSLOVEYOU / @MATMCHUGH HOW DID YOU COME TO FORM THE BEAUTIFUL GIRLS? TBG
has been a pseudonym I’ve used to release my music under since 2002. It’s never really been a ‘band’ in a traditional sense. I come up with albums and then gather a group of good friends and amazing players to come and set fire to the live show.
HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC AND HAS IT CHANGED OVER THE YEARS? I describe the style of music I make
as ‘seaside highlife’. It’s basically a mix of acoustic, dub, punk rock, reggae and soul. It’s a blend of all the sounds I heard growing up by the seaside and, it helped me imagine my surroundings were more magical and full of hope than they actually were.
WHAT IS THE PLAN FOR THE BAND THIS YEAR? ARE YOU TOURING? We just did a four month long world tour
to celebrate the 15th anniversary of our first record. There’ll only be a handful more shows this year, as I’m pretty keen to devote some time to other projects.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR UPCOMING ARTISTS? I try
not to give advice because I never feel like I actually know what I’m doing. You have to do things for the right reasons. If your goal is to make music to express yourself and to then share those feelings with others in hope of connecting on a fundamentally human level then, no matter what happens, you will be ok.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOUR SHOW IN BYRON NEXT WEEK? We’ve been playing all over the world for the last four months. Of course, I could be biased but the band sounds really good. You can catch The Beautiful Girls show at the Beach Hotel on Sunday 25th Feb. Info at byronbaysurffestival.com.au
