This week's review

TITLE: The Other Hand AUTHOR: Chris Cleave NUMBER OF PAGES: 271 EST. READ TIME: 6 hours and 4 minutes WHAT IT'S ABOUT: On a romantic holiday, a British

couple are forced to make an impossible decision which will change their lives forever. The story begins on a beach in Africa but only truly begins years later when the past catches up with the couple in unthinkable and disastrous ways. A family will be faced with great responsibility as they navigate an uncertain future.

WHO IT'S FOR: Fans of ‘chick lit’ and those after a heartwarming (and sappy) read.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: It is impossible to

recommend this book to anyone without giving away its best assets so I won’t try to do so here. The Other Hand is an education into how guilt can eat away at people to the point of no return. Chris Cleave has managed to keep a dark subject matter accessible to his reader with offerings of humour and hope.

NOTABLE QUOTE: “On the girl's brown legs there were

many small white scars. I was thinking, Do those scars cover the whole of you, like the stars and the moons on your dress? I thought that would be pretty too, and I ask you right here please to agree with me that a scar is never ugly. That is what the scar makers want us to think. But you and I, we must make an agreement to defy them. We must see all scars as beauty. Okay? This will be our secret. Because take it from me, a scar does not form on the dying. A scar means, I survived.” This week's review written by Jessie Hilton.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

BIG CHANGES ARE HAPPENING IN OUR

solar system! Chiron, an asteroid on an erratic path between Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus, is the archetype of the wounded healer, and has just changed sign. He moved from sensitive, watery Pisces into warrior-like and fiery Aries. He will be backtracking into Pisces twice until March 2019; after that he settles in Aries for seven years to come. Chiron in Aries warns of a conflictladen time, but also generates great resilience and promotes the ability to learn lessons fast. On Thursday a Sun/Uranus conjunction in late Aries ignites passion or impulsiveness and could lead to accidents. Unforeseen events might develop with lightningquick speed or a genius idea may suddenly brighten your day. A Mars/ Pluto conjunction in Capricorn is building (exact next Wednesday) and provides great energy and drive to accomplish what you set out for. Some people might not know when to stop and exhaust themselves to the point of getting sick. The whole week is very energetic and dynamic and lots can be achieved. A Jupiter/Mars sextile (exact on Tuesday) supports the upbeat energy. On Wednesday Venus moves into curious and restless Gemini; she is the first planet to make contact with Chiron in Aries. Their sextile may ignite a flurry of social activities and might stir up feelings and insights about old relationships. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

The Queen of Swords is forthright, direct and honest; it is against her nature to hold back her feelings and convictions. You too might be compelled to be even more outspoken than usual! Make sure you slow down a bit on Thursday and curb your impulsive actions on that day.

h TAURUS

The Prince of Wands is often called ‘Prince Charming’. He oozes confidence and has a convincing can-do attitude. With him as your ally, you are able to navigate the extremes and uncertainties of this week’s astro flavour buoyantly. Trust yourself and rise to any challenge with an open mind and a passionate, open heart.

i GEMINI

The 6 of Swords suggests keeping things cool, rational and logical. With Venus entering your sign this week, this relates particularly to any matters of the heart! Don’t jump to premature conclusions or over-idealise a longgone love affair. On a different note, this could be a great week for implementing an original idea or concept, and teamwork works out magically.

j CANCER

The 2 of Swords indicates that you are craving nothing more than peace of mind, which is not easy to find during this week of changeability and upheaval. You might be fretting about feeling pressured to make a decision, and your resistance may actually compound the problem. You’ll feel relief once you’ve made your decision…

BY GISELA

k LEO

The Ace of Cups promises a heart-opening experience that leaves you full of gratitude and ready to share your love and light with others. Your inner alignment assists you in tuning into the needs of others. Maybe you would like to surprise some of these deserving souls with a beautiful act of service…

l VIRGO

The Chariot, in combination with the astro flavour of this week, highlights your readiness, determination and drive to make important changes in your world. Trust yourself, your good judgement and assert yourself when necessary.

a LIBRA

c SAGITTARIUS

With the Knight of Wands drawn you are ready for a leap of faith and a jump into the unfamiliar. You’ll certainly land on your feet if you follow your inner knowing. Don’t allow self-doubt to distract your mind, and honour your visionary abilities.

d CAPRICORN

When the Hanged Man appears you are fed up with the same old self-imposed limitations that you circulate in your head and heart. Now is the time to break destructive patterns, let go of fixed perspectives and confront hangups. Make yourself and your personal development top priority, and you hold the key to ending a lot of inner struggles.

The Hermit emphasises your need for space and retreat. You might feel out of balance, and the most efficient way to regain your equilibrium is to give up all social distractions and to focus inward for some time. After some soul-searching you’ll emerge refreshed, graceful and ready to meet the world.

e AQUARIUS

b SCORPIO

f PISCES

The 9 of Wands calls upon your inner strength, resilience and perseverance. This week’s highs and lows, victories and defeats might be challenging and require that you don’t give up on yourself or others. Doubts may plague you, but hard work or a work-out at the gym strengthens your determination, stamina and spirit.

With the 3 of Disks drawn you are ready to move mountains this week. You are highly motivated and you easily inspire others to great teamwork and marvellous results. Your objectives are not ego-driven but are fuelled by humanitarian concern and the greater good of all.

The 7 of Cups indicates a difficult relationship with your day-to-day reality. You might not really want to listen to the deep dissatisfaction in your heart, but your attempts to fill the emptiness by overindulging in old habits don’t work as well as they used to, even if you increase the dose. What kind of fulfilment are you really longing for? You’ll feel better if you take at least one step in that direction.

THE KEY FOCUS ON YOUR PATH TO HAPPINESS IS BEING RADICALLY HONEST ABOUT YOURSELF. LITTLESCHOOLOFBUDDHISM.COM

DEAR KEENWA, Was at yoga the other day and after some heavy breathing felt my spine tingle and jingle, and then a slithering sensation at the base. Before I knew it a snake-like being had followed me home and demanded scrambled tofu for brekkie. Have you heard of this phenomena? - Suspiciously Om

DEAR SUSPICIOUSLY OM, Woah. Your root chakra sounds rooted. Or is it your third eye? Can anyone else see the snake? This sounds like a good old fashioned case of kundalini awakening, and I wish with all my heart yours gives you a good rating for your hospitality on Airbnb, or you are really screwed then.

TOUGH MOTHER FITNESS Mums & Bubs fitness classes. Beginners

First, get yourself some mates. Any thirsty man will do. A term you should recognise as it stems from the German word "gemate" which means to share a meal at the same table. Find a table. Find a liquid meal. Listen to said mate's stories and laugh frequently, even if they are not humorous. Nod enthusiastically through every roundhouse, floater and wipeout of your new mates' most recent surf. After you've consumed the liquid dinner, get yourself into some trouble together, but whatever you do, DO NOT do a runner. As defined by wikipedia, a mate implies a sense of shared experience, mutual respect and unconditional assistance, something your mate will expect everyday, not just ANZAC day.

With Caitlin Cady

This week's mantra

A PRAYER FOR THE REMEMBRANCE AND REVELATION OF OUR SELF-ESSENCE. Erase fear from my cells Sweep it away so there is clear space for expansion. Elevate my thinking and my behaviour. Saturate my being with an elixir of trust and serenity. Till the soil of my subconscious. Sow the seeds of new beliefs, fortify them with faith, so that I may joyfully pull in the harvest of my efforts, unburdened by fear and judgement. Teach me about trust. Show me how to surrender. Remind me how to be strong without posturing or performing. Show me when to rise and when to soften. Help me return my attention to the present and stay close to myself. Support me in my devotion to this work so that I may be playful in my life. Help me to remember that this process is a remembrance of the truth, a revelation of my self-essence.

PLASTIC FREE Mermaid Healthy choices, healthy body, healthy oceans With Kate Nelson

STUFF YOU DIDN’T REALISE WAS PLASTIC - PART TWO FOIL PACKAGING - Shiny metallic packets of chips and chocolates. Genuine al foil feels like metal but it’s still plastic.

CORN-BASED BIODEGRADABLE PACKAGING - PLA is a type

of plastic made from corn, so it’s still a plastic. It’s sold as a ‘green’ alternative to conventional plastic as it’s not made from fossil fuels, and it’s widely believed to be compostable. Unfortunately, it is only compostable in seriously high temp industrial composts. Most regions in Australia do not have this system; so most bio plastics go to landfill.

HAIR SPRAY - Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is a plastic

ingredient in most hairsprays. It is most dangerous when applied to hair and heated up with styling tools. The plastic melts and we breathe it in.

LOTIONS - Synthetic copolymers are found in

everything from moisturising cream to body butter. Some are so toxic, scientists strongly warn against ingestion. Since lotion is topically applied, manufacturers are not required to share this fun fact.

MILK CARTONS - It’s not waxed cardboard, it’s polyethylene. Buy milk in glass.

REMEMBER - Make your own, Bring your own, be radically self-sufficient.

If you have a plastic you need help with, get in touch on Instagram @plasticfreemermaid or mermaid@iquitplastics.com

STONE & WOOD BREWERY - BYRON A & I ESTATE I’ve downed a few Pacific Ales at Stone and Wood Brewery over the years - at industry events, fundraisers, festivals of the stone and village gatherings. But it hadn’t been on my radar to play tourist and take a $20 guided tour of the brewery until recently. Stone and Wood Brewery is on Boronia Place in the Arts & Industrial Estate. For the best part of 10 years it’s been the company’s HQ where the first batch of Pacific Ale was brewed by Brad and his businesses partners in beer Jamie and Ross. Today, small beer runs are still brewed onsite and there is a cellar door for tastings, merchandise sales and brewery tours. Brewery tours run every day of the week except Tuesdays. You should book in advance online to avoid disappointment. You should also arrange a ride home from the brewery or walk home – just saying. The tour starts with a cleansing ale before learning about the beginnings of Stone and Wood and the beer making process. That’s followed by a tasting paddle. The Stone and Wood mantra is to be: • Community minded All brewery tour profits are passed on to charity. • Fiercely independent Stone and Wood is Australia’s second largest craft beer brewer behind Coopers. • Environmentally conscious Brewing waste is fed to cattle or composted. If you like beer this is a definite must do and you’ll be supporting a charitable cause at the same time.

Q&A A Q U IC K C H

A T W IT H .. .

Dan Marsh

@BAYOUFILM FILM PHOTOGRAPHY IS BACK IN FASHION. WHY? I think

people are embracing the chance to get away from the instant gratification digital offers and start to learn the art of taking photos again, being able to slow down and be mindful of each shot. The anticipation of waiting for them to be developed is also always exciting.

WHAT DOES FILM PHOTOGRAPHY MEAN TO YOU? I fell in

love with film after spending years in the darkroom printing. I love the perfect imperfections and the nostalgic charm carried in the shots. Film allows me to hone my skills and truly create a photo, not just take one.

WHAT WAS YOUR MOTIVATION FOR BRINGING A FILM LAB TO BYRON BAY? Bayou Film is a space for

creating; allowing like minded people to share their knowledge, projects and film froth. Through building a community of people who love film as much as I do, we will keep the dream alive if not just for ourselves, but for our customers too. And as Byron is a meeting place for creatives, it seemed like the ideal spot.

IF YOU COULD SHOOT ANYONE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD IT BE? Bowie. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING EXHIBITION 'YOU JUST PRESSED THE BUTTON'? Yes. We are excited to

have teamed up with RVCA to showcase our client’s work in a group show. The concept of ‘you just pressed the button’ represents the anticipation that shooting film can create, and the ability of the person who's developing it. It also provides a platform for our clients to show their work to the broader Byron community. Check out the show at RVCA, Jonson Street opening Friday 20th April and running until 22nd May.

SaVe E DAT THE

Fashion Revolution Byron Bay

FRIDAY 27TH APRIL / BYRON BAY BREWERY Fashion Revolution is a global movement calling for greater transparency, sustainability and ethics in the fashion industry. Heading up #whomademyclothes, they aim to radically change the way our clothes are sourced, produced and purchased. The group are coming to Byron with an industry panel to answer questions and help navigate a progressive way forward raising awareness on how our clothes are made, how to support equality and protect our environment. They will also be screening the film The True Cost and providing tips on how to check if your fav brands are working in an ethical and sustainable supply chain. The Brewery’s Karma Keg will be pouring beers from 6pm. Proceeds will be donated to Fashion Revolution and B1G1 (Business for Good). For more info see www.fashionrevolution.org and eventbrite.com.au
