Check out Groove Therapy, a beginners hip-hop dance class for adults now being hosted at The Corner Palm every Thursday at 6.15pm; register at thecornerpalm.com ($20). Sunday is the day to take mum out for a slap-up lunch, with several venues around the region hosting Mother’s Day specials: Balcony is offering mums a free glass of bubbles and a take-home gift, while the Services Club is putting on a two-course meal and a vino for $35. Over in Lennox, Beef + Beach will be dishing up decadent share platters for $60 per person, with live music from 3pm (tickets via Eventbrite). Come Monday, Tamra McMahom of Salted Cure Workshops will be hosting a two-hour Kombucha Brewing workshop in Byron from 10am ($35; saltedcure.com), which includes your own SCOBY (if the idea of guzzling fermented tea already makes you gag, don’t Google that). Bottoms up!

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

THURSDAY AND FRIDAY ARE GREAT

days to let your creativity flow while achieving lots. The mind is quick and inventive with Mercury in pioneering Aries, while four planets in earth signs (Sun, Mars, Saturn and Pluto) provide structure and pragmatism. On Saturday and Sunday (Mothers’ Day!) the astro weather is tension-loaded, due to a stressful Mercury/Mars square and a Mercury/Uranus union in hot-headed Aries. Self-centredness or nonconformity may lead to strenuous arguments. This might linger until the New Moon in Taurus on Tuesday evening, which reinforces consistent, yet unyielding behaviour. A new chapter starts with Uranus’ ingress into Taurus on Wednesday, where the planet for revolution and breakthrough resides until 2026, with a little retrograde stint back into Aries from November to next March. On a global level we may experience changes in our monetary systems, agriculture and economy. On a personal level Uranus in Taurus raises questions about how liberated or enslaved we feel in the seeming dichotomy between freedom and security. All our personal values are bound to change radically. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

With the Knight of Wands drawn you are absolutely ready to ride the wave of change. Your ‘bring-it-on’ spirit makes things happen and inspires others to live more adventurously and passionately. This is a great time for a vision-quest and self-realisation!

h TAURUS

The Queen of Cups indicates that you need some quiet and self-reflective time. In your intuitive ways you might sense big changes coming. The best way to prepare yourself is nurturing your body, mind and spirit with the comforting harmony that nature or your favourite pet project provides.

i GEMINI

The Chariot invites you to have a close look at how you keep yourself busy and pre-occupied. You may find a new way to incorporate more inner stillness and centredness into your everyday movements and efforts. With less distraction you increase your effectiveness and reach your objectives in no time.

j CANCER

The Hanged Man Tarot card depicts a state of unwillingness or inability to embrace change, even though you resent the situation you are in and you are not comfortable. What would happen if you let go, surrender, find a new perspective or change your mind? There are always many more options than those you are currently invested in...

c SAGITTARIUS

l VIRGO

d CAPRICORN

The 10 of Disks pictures inner and outer riches. In terms of business and success you are going through a lucky phase and your whole being radiates health and confidence. Now is a good time to align yourself with the principle of self-worth and prosperity in order to create long-term abundance.

The 8 of Disks is dedicated to Virgo’s favoured way of life, which is creating order out of chaos, working diligently and coming as close to perfection as possible with every move. Make sure you don’t overextend yourself though, otherwise you’ll feel exhausted and resentful. Take time to smell the roses too.

a LIBRA

The Emperor Tarot card insists on you making a stand and applying your leadership skills in situations that matter. You might have to assert yourself, whether you like it or not, but with your inbuilt people-skills you find a way to do that in the most harmonious and peace-keeping way.

b SCORPIO

The Fool Tarot card heralds a new beginning and represents your ability to transform, regenerate and give birth to new ways of being. From a place of courage, wonder and anticipation you create new circumstances and opportunities. Follow and trust your heart’s desire and allow things to unfold.

The Priestess pays great attention to her inner equilibrium; she knows when to withdraw from social involvement to restore herself. You may feel extra sensitive this week and can’t tolerate stress or disharmonious situations very well. Give yourself permission to retreat and recuperate, rather than soldier on.

With the 7 of Swords drawn you spend too much time thinking about why things are not going to work out. Maybe you feel as if this habit keeps you safe from ‘worst case scenarios’, but it actually drains your energy and sabotages your potential. If you focus on reasons why things should work out, you feel lighter, more buoyant and you have more get up and go.

e AQUARIUS

When the Devil Tarot card appears you might feel bewildered about your own choices and reactions, not knowing how you got yourself into an unwanted and undesirable situation. Deep unconscious energies may surface, forcing you to deal with your own shadow. Accept it, own it and embrace it; we all have it. Treat it with humour rather than with judgement.

f PISCES

The Hierophant supports your personal growth and development. He assists you to find ways to embark on the spiritual/mystical path with practical feet or to be the Buddha in the marketplace. This can be a very productive and creative week; you may learn lots about moving beyond your wants, aversions and judgements.

DEAR RAD MUM, When my marriage was breaking down, we tried couples counselling, the cross-cultural one, cos not only were we born on different continents, we communicated from entirely different planets. Due to the developmental differences in ego, the kind lady suggested that I compliment hubbie on every parenting gesture he made from changing a nappy to taking out the bin; you know, all the things I did 400 times more than him by midday. She then suggested that after I had done all that, that I look in the mirror and tell myself what a wonderful job I was doing, and pat my own back. I got up and left too.

DEAR KEENWA, Mother's Day is coming up and I can already feel the tension rising. I hate breakfast in bed. All those crumbs that I have to clean up, then change the sheets. My kids never boil the eggs long enough which has me gag-smiling as I ingest what they've made me. I'm also sick to death of slippers, I'd rather get lingerie. Do I tell them, or bear it? I see the kids all day, all evening, all week, so what I really want is to spend the day alone. Am I tripping? - Motherhood Rising

DEAR MOTHERHOOD RISING, Why don't you grab yourself a piece of paper, and pen, and write St Mothersday a request, I can forward it to the mothers' helpers if you don't got the address. Remember to check your list twice, and that they're watching if you're naughty or nice.

LIFE DEATH & BEYOND

The Souls Journey, Ancient Shamanic Wisdom, Full day of teachings and ceremony - filled with hope! Mon May 7th, Byron Bay, www.lifedeathbeyond.com

This week's mantra

I’M SORRY FOR WHAT I SAID BEFORE I MEDITATED I don’t suffer fools. I take no shit. I’m a fast thinker and a fast talker. I also have a history of putting my foot in my mouth. Being a bit reactive. Borderline bossy. Impatient even - “get to the point, people!”* To a degree, being assertive, truthful, bold and brave is what makes me, me. It’s my signature swagger. But when those qualities cross over into the territory of reactivity, hurtful honesty and impertinence, my swagger can turn into a limp. So how to make the best of these in-born qualities and filter out the less-thanhelpful extremes? Meditation, obvi. Meditation is my salvation when it comes to communication. Meditation gifts me with patience, clarity, awareness and has strengthened my "listening" muscles. Being less reactive and more conscious in my communications has undoubtedly created more harmony in my relationships… and less instances where I'm left with a "whyyyyy did I say that" hangover. Don't get me wrong, I'm still opinionated, bold, fierce and fiery. But I've integrated more neutrality, compassion, understanding and patience into my repertoire and the effects have been magic. More space to marinate on a thought or idea before I blurt it out. More understanding. More learning. More connection. Better outcomes. Meditation evolves you out of habitual ways of being (whatever they may be) and allows you to experience your full potential as a human being. That makes it well worth spending 1% of your day in stillness. (Yep, 10-15 minutes is all it takes.) *Actually, I stand by that last one- be brief, be bright, be gone, ya’ll!

BOOKS FOR Y

This week's review

TITLE: The Underground Railroad AUTHOR: Colson Whitehead NUMBER OF PAGES: 336 EST. READ TIME: 6 hours and 17 minutes WHAT IT'S ABOUT: In the early 19th century - a time

where slavery is rife in the US and African Americans are forced to work on cotton plantations, hope is found on the ‘Underground Railroad’. Based on true events, a group of Americans build a railway underground to transport slaves in order to escape to safety. WHO IT'S FOR: History nuts and those interested in political sagas. WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: For me, it is always interesting learning more about another country’s history. I had studied the Civil Rights Movement at school but didn’t know nearly enough about slavery in America before this. Now, during a time of political unrest in the U.S. the injustice presented in the book feels eerily familiar. The Underground Railroad is also a beautiful homage to a mother and daughter connecting through courage. Whilst reading, I could visualise the scenes that Whitehead was describing. I had visions of the landscape, the characters and events. He has a talent for cinematic writing and is great at engaging his reader throughout. NOTABLE QUOTE: “And America, too, is a delusion, the grandest one of all. The white race believes--believes with all its heart--that it is their right to take the land. To kill Indians. Make war. Enslave their brothers. This nation shouldn't exist, if there is any justice in the world, for its foundations are murder, theft, and cruelty. Yet here we are.” This week's review written by Jessie Hilton @jessieahilton

This week's location

THE ITALIAN DINER - BANGALOW The Italian Diner sits at about the halfway mark of the annual Bangalow Billycart Derby. That Sunday in May when hundreds of speed racers hurl themselves down the main street in their homemade contraptions competing for the coveted title. (this year it’s on Sunday 20 May). But on quieter nights when the tourists have gone home, The Italian Diner is a pleasant spot to listen to the birds with a Negroni in hand as you contemplate the menu. The dinner menu starts with Antipsati such as Arancini and Mushroom Ragu Gnudi, followed by a selection of Pasta (Gluten Free available). The pastas include a classic Lasagne made with Bangalow Pork and Woodfired Pumpkin Fettucine with confit garlic, feta and macadamia nuts. It wouldn’t be an Italian trattoria without Pizza served with simple toppings like Mixed mushroom on a garlic base or Prosciutto with caramelised onion and rocket. Then there are Secondi - larger main meals with option like the Fish of the day, Braised Dorper lamb and the classic Chicken cacciatore. Sides are simple, like the fresh mixed tomato salad, roast potatoes and a rocket and parmesan salad. The Lunch menu is the same as dinner minus the Secondi options. It’s great to see a variety of local producers on the menu including Sunday Sustainable Bakery, Brunswick Heads Oysters, Bangalow Pork and Salumi Australia. If you have room for dessert there’s Tiramisu and the trio of Cannoli featuring chocolate ganache, pistachio cream and lemon ricotta.

Live in Conversation with Lisa Messenger THURSDAY 31ST MAY / BYRON COMMUNITY CENTRE

Surely the most used word in Byron at the moment is ‘entrepreneur’, and why wouldn’t it be with such a thriving creative start up scene. So it is not surprising that Lisa Messenger has included Byron in her latest venture - A tour to share stories and support entrepreneurs and start-ups in regional Australian communities. If you don’t know much about Lisa, her story is one of ‘anything is possible’. She launched her internationally successful print mag Collective Hub in 2013 with no background in media, no money and a team of 3 all under the age of 25. Q&A A Q U IC K C H

A T W IT H .. .

Mark Swivel @SWIV2015

WHO IS MARK SWIVEL? A Near Dead White Male

relishing the brief gift of consciousness. Also a Comic, Lawyer and Dustyesky MC.

HOW DID YOU GET YOUR BREAK INTO STAND UP COMEDY?

Let me know me when it happens. Please. FUNNIEST STAND UP SHOW MOMENT? I once asked for volunteers to join me on stage. Only a dog did. WHO ARE YOU LISTENING TO? Podcasts - Athletico Mince with Bob Mortimer, Class Act on ABC – superb dissection of our unequal and fraught society. Music - Stella Donnelly, chanteuse, future superstar. WHAT’S YOUR MORNING ROUTINE? Commence breathing. Coffee. More breathing. More coffee.

DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD YOU HAVE A DRINK WITH? Cat Power. Dylan Thomas. Genghis Khan. Mae West.

WHAT DOES A LOCALS DAY OUT LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?

Mullum Friday markets. Jumping off the bridge at Bruns. Football with Eureka FC.

IF YOU COULD COLLABORATE WITH ANYONE IN THE WORLD AT THE MOMENT WHO WOULD IT BE? Great question.

Maybe Sarah Silverman, comic. Rubens Ostlund, movie maker. Or Stella Donnelly, chanteuse.

WHAT’S YOUR “UNMISSABLE” BYRON BAY ACTIVITY/ RESTAURANT/SHOP. Life would have a huge hole in it without the Green Curry at Rock & Roll.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING EXHIBITION ‘EMPTY SPACES?’ Something different for me. A photo

installation. 101 images. Shown 3 ways: raw, cooked and processed. Taken on my phone over many years. No flash. No filter. No selfies. Cities. Wilderness. Traces of a life, sprinkled around the world. The story of a divorce. And a dog.breathing. More coffee. Check out the ‘Empty Spaces’ exhibition, opening Friday 11th May at Byron School of Art.
