This week's review

TITLE: Wellmania : Extreme Misadventures in the Search for Wellness AUTHOR: Brigid Delaney NUMBER OF PAGES: 320 EST. READ TIME: 6 hours and 30 minutes PRICE: $24.99

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Brigid Delaney has done it all to try to look and feel healthy. Colonics, fad diets, hot yoga, mindfulness..you name it, she’s tried it. In search of a healthier lifestyle she discovers her, and the world’s obsession with ‘wellness’. In Wellmania, Delaney explores whether it’s possible to experiment with fad dieting and health crazes for short bursts of time and then incorporate their philosophies into everyday life.

WHO IT'S FOR: Anyone who has tried to diet (I think this covers almost everyone).

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: As is mentioned in this

book, wellness is now a billion dollar industry. We are increasingly on the hunt for another solution to lose weight or look like Gwyneth Paltrow! It’s laugh-outloud hilarious and a true story. Brigid Delaney holds a mirror to herself, metaphorically and actually, and is not sure she likes what she sees, metaphorically and actually.

NOTABLE QUOTE: “Day one of any diet and you’re gung-

ho and ready to go. I’m no exception. I plan to stay inside (hide inside) all day so I will not encounter any food out there in the wild. It is December in Bondiparty time in a hedonistic place. Icy plunges into the sea off the rocks at Ben Buckler, the sun warming the grass, the sandstone glowing the colour of buttery chardonnay, the hot white sand and smell of oil and sunscreen and perfume, the heat and bare bodies, salty skin, barbecues and cold beers as the sun goes down..” This week's review written by Jessie Hilton @jessieahilton

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

THURSDAY’S FULL MOON IN CAPRICORN

has a very sober and conservative feel, due to Saturn lining up with the Moon and opposing the Sun. Inner tensions and control issues could inflame any relationship that is challenging at this moment in time. Acts of love and devotion may not be forthcoming and Venus in Leo might easily feel neglected or offended. On Friday Mercury moves into Leo as well and demands enough room to move. Too much restraint and limitation are definitely not his style; he needs to be able to express his creativity and playfulness! Nerves can feel a bit raw on Saturday; be patient with yourself and others. Sunday might bring an opportunity for a spirited or healing conversation that balances body, mind and soul. Make sure you have time out to relax during the weekend and take space when you need it, otherwise sparks may fly. Monday and Tuesday are the better days to advance any of your projects or to have a meeting/ conference. Nevertheless it pays to be mindful and careful in the ways you express yourself, especially when you feel reactive, because a Mercury/Mars opposition is building (exact next Thursday). For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

ONLINE REPUTATION MASTERCLASS

g ARIES

The 6 of Wands promises great success this week; just be aware of the price you might have to pay. If you focus not only on victory but also put your mind on generating a win-win situation, you enjoy your own benevolence and you achieve recognition from others too.

h TAURUS

k LEO

The 8 of Disks indicates that a diligent, concentrated effort is the way to create fruitful outcomes this week. If you get organised, attend to details and consider yourself a servant of your cause rather than a master, your success is guaranteed.

l VIRGO

The Prince of Disks symbolises a thorough, methodical and patient approach to any situation. It blends very well with the Taurean nature of sticking to the tried and true. Take care of the little things in front of you this week and know that bigger things will follow naturally.

The Queen of Swords represents an honest, astute and forthright approach to any communication. As you tell your truth and don’t hide what you perceive behind a mask of good manners, you actually gain respect and recognition because you are not afraid to get to the heart of a matter.

i GEMINI

a LIBRA

The Ace of Disks represents inner and outer riches, but it is not only symbolic for financial abundance. The belief that you are deserving and blessed opens your mind and heart to recognise opportunities that come your way. If you are really lucky a sudden windfall might occur.

The Sun Tarot card is highly creative and inspires collaborative efforts for the purpose of joyful co-creation. It’s a feel-good time and you may be able to inspire others with your vitality, charm and zest for life while producing great outcomes for everyone involved.

j CANCER

b SCORPIO

The Fool Tarot card appears for the second consecutive week! You may find yourself in the middle of a great transformational process. You don’t buy into old fears, doubts or limitations any more, and with new-found courage and wonder, you build a new world for yourself.

BY GISELA

The 9 of Cups promises success and fulfilment of your heart desires, especially on an emotional level. Therefore romance and love are on the cards, as well as the satisfaction of other deep longings that you have been wishing for. Enjoy the abundance and perfection that surrounds you at this time.

IRONING PROFESSIONALLY DONE

c SAGITTARIUS

The 9 of Disks shows up for the second week in a row! Grace and ease are blessing you and allow you to enjoy life in comfort and style. You might have worked hard for it but the fruits of your labour are plentiful. Your gain is not restricted to the material level; what is even more valuable is that you gained confidence and self-worth.

d CAPRICORN

When the Magician appears your creative manifestation power is at its highest and this is THE week to produce magical results. Apply yourself totally, use your skills, tools and resources, and combine them with your excellent focus and timing. You might be closer to fulfilling your vision than you think!

e AQUARIUS

The Knight of Wands symbolises a fast and determined mind that provides more than enough inspiration to follow up on some great ideas and transform them into reality. While you might be bursting with energy and drive, be a bit careful to not rush into things prematurely!

f PISCES

The Empress symbolises the perfect balance between nurturing others and self-care. Any old patterns of over-giving until you feel drained, or over-protecting your tenderness, fall away. Now your inner wisdom and your love for people can be expressed in a pure and powerfully healing way, whether you say yes or no.

Affordable prices start as little as $45 for a min. 2HRS when you just can't find time to get your ironing done. Please call Cris on 0406 135 820

I met the love of my life a few months back, he was backpacking around The Bay, well, living the #vanlife actually, and now his visa has run out and he's going home. Any tips on long distance relating? Like, does it work?- Long and Short of It

DEAR LONG AND SHORT OF IT, Because I've had two of these affairs myself, I'm going to quote relationship expert, Dan Savage instead, who says there needs to be a few rules if your love is going to last the sea miles. Namely, an end date of said distance, the understanding that your partner cannot fulfil your human needs during the period of separation, and in order to skip feeling bad about having needs, the understanding that when you do get them met, it is on the down low, as in what happens on tour, stays on tour. I also worked out I had intimacy issues.

DEAR KEENWA, My bestie is such an amazing manifestor. Anything she desires, she gets. I know it's lowering my vibe, or doing something to my karma, but it kills me with jealousy, and seems really unfair. Does she really manifest it or is it just white privilege? - Witch Is It

DEAR WITCH IS IT,

SUSTAINABLITITY

L L I F D N A L S A K X U N C

DEAR KEENWA,

L J J Q S V F B D S M E S B D

When I was a kid, I used to lay on my top bunk and turn off the TV in my room by blinking my eyes, no shit. Visualisation and positive thinking can be really powerful exercises that influence our internal world in big ways. Yet...crediting your access to things like housing and jobs, or social hookups with your manifestation type hoo-ha denies the part that is determined to some degree by race, class, and social privilege. Think about this before you hashtag it perhaps, and do your bit to break down those structures that oppress others, otherwise you might find yourself the face of a spiritual bypassing meme.

This week's mantra BEGINNERS ARE WINNERS.

There’s no shame in being a rookie meditator. In fact, regardless of whether you’re already heavily meditated or you’re just starting out, approaching each and every meditation with the spirit of a Beginner (with a capital B) has major benefits. There’s magic in being a beginner. Think of a time when you did a workshop or took a class in something funsomething low-stakes and totally out of your comfort zone. Say, pottery or basket weaving or belly dancing. You showed up with the intention to learn and have a bit of fun. You brought no baggage, you had no expectations. You knew the world wasn’t going to fall apart if your mug was lopsided or your basket wasn’t watertight or your hips didn’t jiggle just right.

Instead, you showed up with a sense of openness, curiosity, playfulness and wide-eyed wonder. You listened intently to the instructor with heightened awareness, but also approached the whole thing with a fearless, child-like, I’mma-justjump-in-and-get-myhands-dirty sense of playful experimentation. This is the spirit we want to embody in our meditation practice. Seeing the process with the heightened awareness of fresh eyes. Embracing the practice with friendly curiosity. Valuing the process and not the outcome. This is the whole point. So be a proud newbie. Every time. Over and over again. Every time you sit, sit as if it’s the first time.

SPIRIT EMOJI: FAV QUOTE: I

have no special talent, I'm only passionately curious - Albert Einstein

TOP 3 TIPS 1) Learn and grow from hard times. Don't FOR ASPIRING view failures as failures, view them as ENTREPRENEURS:

learning experiences and growth. 2) Don't expect overnight success, good things take time to grow. If it was easy, everyone would do it. 3) Don't limit your creativity, your innovation is everything. Just because it has been done before it doesn't mean you can't think of a new approach.

WHAT DOES Hustling to me is having a vision, dreams HUSTLING MEAN and goals, then putting them to action. It's TO YOU:

a tenacious dynamic approach to working hard to achieve your goals at all costs.

BEST PART OF I feel so lucky to live in Australia, let alone LIVING IN BYRON: one of it's finer geographical locations. The

beautiful, rich countryside which melts to the stunning blue ocean is soul enriching. The people of Byron and the Northern Rivers are welcoming, down to earth and could make anywhere feel like home.Â

PLASTIC FREE Mermaid Healthy choices, healthy body, healthy oceans With Kate Nelson

PLASTIC FREE JULY IS HERE! ARE YOU READY? This month many sustainably minded Australians are giving up single-use plastics. Why? Plastics do not biodegrade, they “photodegrade.” meaning as light hits the material, it weakens the molecular bonds, eventually cracking the plastic or wearing it thin enough to break up into many small pieces until we cannot see these toxic bits with our naked eye. We say plastics “break up” because the process is entirely different than how something natural “breaks down” back into the earth. For example a banana peel will biodegrade and the substance will decompose by bacteria or other living organisms. Plastic will degrade from exposure to light, and acts more like a giant oil spill. Microplastics are the microscopic pieces of plastic that are the hardest to clean up. They are the same size as the microorganisms that make up the foundation of the food chain. Cleaning up these plastics is next to impossible without simultaneously wiping out the smallest creatures on the menu. Plastic is full of chemicals that give it it’s various textures, colours, malleability, etc. In the ocean or bellies of animals, plastic is likely to leach these chemicals. Plastic is also absorbent, thus it absorbs any chemicals it comes into contact with. Becoming even more dangerous for the sea creatures! Yikes. Go to my instagram account @plasticfreemermaid or the blog at: iquitplastics.com or youtube.com/c/ plasticfreemermaid for all the tips to quit plastics this or any month!

BANG BURGER BAR - BANGALOW

The burgers are better at Bang Burger Bar in Bangalow. But with 23 burgers on the menu it can be hard to choose! Try the B’Star – a classic style beef burger featuring a fresh, simple salad, caramelised onion, tomato relish and mayo of the Big Bang Burger for one with the lot! Using your hands somehow taste better! If beef burgers aren’t your thing then there are Fish Burgers, Chook Burgers and Vegie Burgers to tempt you. The Barra and Whitey (whiting) burgers use fresh fish sourced from Northern Rivers Seafood. Try the classic Chick Schnitz burger for a treat, featuring a chicken breast schnitzel with salad, tomato relish and mayo. For vegie options there are options with Tofu, Bean, Haloumi and Lentil patties. But that’s just one side of the menu as Bang Burger Bar serves a whole other range of delicious fare that’s not burgers. From the Fish Bar you must try the Salt, Pepper, Spiced Squid, which is always super tender. Make sure you order a side of hot chips as they are some of the best you will taste. There are Salads, a Toasted Sandwich menu and Wraps and Rolls as well. Bang Burger Bar also serves breakfast. From muffins and banana bread through to eggs as you like, full grilled breakfast temptations or a variety of breakfast burgers and wraps great for eating on the run. Kids are catered for too.

Stefan Hunt @WEREALLGOINGTO

WHAT IS WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE FESTIVAL? It’s a 100%

independent multimedia art festival with a purpose. Local and international artists creating films, photos, performance, music and more to spark meaningful conversations around themes of fear, death and life. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA? It began as poem titled ‘We’re All Going To Die’. I wrote it when I was experiencing anxiety a few years back. The project then began as book, then a film, then a massive multimedia art festival that premiered in Sydney last year. We’re officially launching the book at the Byron festival, which I’m psyched to share.

WHAT SEEM TO BE THE BIGGEST FEARS AMONGST PEOPLE YOU SPEAK TO? Besides the typical “sharks, clowns and public speaking” we’ve found it’s the day to day fears that really effect peoples lives. Stuff like being judged by friends, taking a risk and failing, the uncertainty of the future. The craziest thing is so many people think they’re the only ones living with these fears. That’s why we need to get people talking. The moment you realize you’re not alone is the moment it all changes.

WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT TO EXPERIENCE DURING THE FESTIVAL? Our goal is to inspire people to fear less and live more, because we’re all going to die anyway right? The art and experiences we create are there to start taboo conversations in a fun way. We call the festival an amusement park for the soul.

DO YOU HAVE A MANTRA OR QUOTE THAT YOU LIVE BY?

Fear Less. Live More. We’re All Going To Die Anyway. WHY DID YOU BRING THE FESTIVAL TO BYRON BAY? Our goal is to take this festival national, to both urban and rural areas. A lot of the artists involved in the festival – myself included - live here in Byron so it couldn’t be a better location for the 2018 festival. Tickets for the festival are on sale now at moshtix.com.au/v2/ were-all-going-to-die
