Festival, Revelation, is one of Australia’s top showcases of contemporary independent film, and from Friday through Monday, Brunswick Picture House will be screening a selection of the best flicks from this year’s fest. For more info and tickets, visit brunswickpicturehouse.com. Friday also marks the opening of Byron’s newest taqueria, Chupacabra, in the Suffolk Park shops complex. And we hear it’s going to be worth crossing town for.

Week

There’ll be more short film action in Byron on Saturday, with this year’s Gutsy Girls Adventure Film Tour screening at Byron Theatre from 6pm. Tickets to the curated selection of short films showcasing inspirational women who don’t mind getting dirty in their pursuit of adventure will set you back $29 (byroncentre.com.au). Fancy a gourmet organic vegan Sunday lunch? Then get yourself over to Mullum Community Garden by 12:30pm for a three-course feast (adults $30, kids $15) to help raise funds for a solar-powered cold-storage system for Mullum Food Co-op. Sunday is also the first day of NAIDOC Week, with a bunch of events happening around the shire including the opening of an Aboriginal art exhibition at Mullum Civic Hall on Monday at 5:30pm, and an Arakwal film night at Byron Theatre on Tuesday at 6:30pm ($10). a w n e r e a e K D om FROM AncienTHtE Wisd er Grain Moth

DEAR KEENWA, I've been in the Shire for a few weeks now; yep, pretty much local, but there is something I am still struggling to understand and I wonder if you can help me? What is love and light exactly? Do I need some? How much is it, and do they sell it at Santos?Byronsynthesis

DEAR BYRONSYNTHESIS, I'm pretty sure it's something certain folk say to cover up doing nothing except making advances to increase their own spirituality. Example, decking oneself out in head to toe beige hemp and walking past a homeless person who is asking for money. Instead of giving him what he wants/needs, judging him with several stereotypical thoughts like, if he just quit drinking or, if only he wanted a job, he'd get one! Then in the same breath sending the brother love and light, before sharing the good deed with one's enlightened kundalini group, and receiving much spiritual credit.

DEAR KEENWA, I met a cool gal on Tinder. We've been chatting for weeks, and had a few dates. We are ready to take the next step. Well, I thought we were. She is a bit of an eco-warrior and only uses organic, fair-trade, vegan, plastic- free, animal cruelty-free condoms. Have you seen how much those things cost? Then there's the postage. I'm happy with Ansel. Whose responsibility is it to cough-up? I already paid half for the first dinner. - Mullum Man

DEAR MULLUM MAN, Here's what my man 'coughed-up' last week in addition to sourcing hippy condoms- Yoniverse class, kundalini yoga, 100 day semen retention training, and a copy of Way of the Superior Man, which he completed. Why? Because he knows temple prices are non-negotiable. He knows you get what you pay for, and in the case you're not up for it mate, don't fear for your woman as my fella has a brother.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

A BIG WEEK AHEAD WITH SUN IN CANCER

trine Jupiter and Neptune, which are the three giants of our solar system! On Thursday the Sun/Jupiter water trine infuses every cell of the body with receptivity and sensitivity, while a Mercury/Mars opposition indicates conflicting interests and impulsiveness. Resentment and recurring arguments could lead to communication breakdown, unless we choose the high road and use conflict as an opportunity to grow, while avoiding the trap of becoming a victim. Otherwise the weekend might be overshadowed by emotional struggle. Mars in Leo is moving extremely slowly and seemingly retrograde; pride and stubbornness could be in the way of finding workable solutions. As soon as the Sun’s contact with Jupiter wanes she forms water trine with Neptune (exact on Monday). Creative expression is enhanced but overly idealistic ideas and ideals might trip us up and make us suffer from worldweariness. Compassion for ourselves and others is the key! A square from Mercury to Jupiter, also on Monday, harbours the dangers of opinionated over-confidence; avoid fundamental discussions or preaching your very own version of morals. On Tuesday Venus moves into meticulous and analytical Virgo where she resides until early August. She loves to bring order and perfection into our lives. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

The 9 of Swords represents mental self-abuse, a habit that is easy to fall into and get so used to, that it is not even obvious when it happens. If your inner self-talk has the vibe of a bully it is time to release him and replace him with the supportive thoughts of a good friend that can give you inspiration and motivation.

h TAURUS

The Chariot Tarot card is a symbol for great confidence and the belief that you earned your place in the world. This self-assurance allows you to regard change as an opportunity for creating new realities. You are eager to express exactly who you are and you are on the way to fulfil your bigger mission.

i GEMINI

The Knight of Swords stands for your sharp and fast mind that picks up facts and comes up with conclusions faster than most. You are ready for action at a moment’s notice, but make sure that in your eagerness to move ahead, you don’t misread signs or overlook essential details.

j CANCER

The Princess of Disks symbolises the creative force of the goddess in her conception and gestation phase. The end result of this process is not visible yet but a lot is going on, still hidden in the unseen. You might be contemplating a new lifestyle or project but you are not in a hurry. You’ll know when the time is ripe.

k LEO

The 6 of Disks promises accomplishment and recognition; for Leo these are two essential ingredients for a life well lived! This week you may find yourself in a position of power and leadership, which you may choose to express benevolently by functioning as an adviser, teacher or mentor for the greater benefit of all that are involved.

l VIRGO

The 5 of Wands paints a picture of strife, anxiety or frustration and is often caused by gnawing doubts about your abilities to cope with certain challenges or setbacks. If this is you this week, reach out to a friend and ask for feedback. This will help you to get beyond your self-imposed limitations.

a LIBRA

The Princess of Wands is the archetype of a free spirit; upbeat, optimistic and enthusiastic, she moves beyond old fears and restrictions into new uncharted territory. Your motivation is liberation and you may feel absolutely ready to take a risk, embark on an adventure or express yourself passionately without worrying what others think about you.

b SCORPIO

The 4 of Disks indicates a slightly inflexible attitude and a resistance to changing conditions. You may well be able to build protective walls around you so that you can feel more safe, secure and in control, but you might end up isolated and more confined than you really want to be.

IRONING PROFESSIONALLY DONE

c SAGITTARIUS

The 7 of Cups points out that more of something is not necessarily better! Any over-indulgence in excessive patterns backfires and only feeds the ‘monkey mind’. No matter whether you choose to overwork, -socialise, -shop or use stimulants, you eventually come to feel the void you are so busily trying to avoid…

d CAPRICORN

The 2 of Cups symbolises unconditional self-love, which is essential in the process of opening your heart to love another. It is easy to appreciate yourself when things are going well, but it is actually during tough times that you need your own support and encouragement most! How would your week evolve if you commit to an act of self-nurturing every day?

e AQUARIUS

The World Tarot Card appeals to your visionary abilities and your quest to make this planet a better place for all. As a natural humanitarian with global awareness you might find great inspiration to bring about change that regenerates and rekindles hope, for yourself as much as for others.

f PISCES

The Fool Tarot card nudges you to move beyond all fears into spontaneous, playful and carefree expression of who you truly are. Trust yourself and your heart’s desire. What could you do today that makes your heart sing and your spirit soar?

Affordable prices start as little as $45 for a min. 2HRS when you just can't find time to get your ironing done. Please call Cris on 0406 135 820

HEAVILY Meditated

TM

With Caitlin Cady

This week's mantra

STOP SHAMING YOUR SHADOW AND START DANCING WITH IT.

Every aspect of ourselves that we judge, criticize or reject, every part of ourselves that we blame or shame, gets shoved into our shadow. Over time, our shadow embodies our shame. Our shadow gets a bad rap. But it’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s darker and edgier. But it’s mostly just misunderstood. Your shadow began as a tiny thorn. Maybe that thorn came from a stem of self-judgment; or criticism misconstrued as fact; or the burden of someone else’s unmet expectation; or a mistake made in innocence but later infected with the anguish of regret. Left in darkness, that speck of shame smouldered and grew hot. Because shame festers in silence. As the shame grew, so did your shadow. Naturally, you wanted to distance yourself. So you disowned your shadow, afraid it might overtake your light. You learned to live in fear of your darkness. But here’s the truth: your shadow doesn’t conceal your light. It’s the perfect partner, the complementary aspect. Just as nature is balanced by sun and moon, we’ve been gifted with light and shadow - different aspects of a system. It’s time to unearth those parts of yourself you misjudged and labeled unloveable. Dig out the parts you’ve silenced, restrained and subdued in darkness. Exhume the aspects of your you-ness that have been tainted with humiliation, comparison, regret, stigma, and remorse. Reclaim your shadow and reexamine it on your own terms. Is there work to be done? Probably. But it’s the shadow work that renders the richest returns. So don’t be afraid of the dark. Rake through your shadow and see what treasure you can reclaim. When you rescue your shadow from the obscurity of shame and blame, you reap the harvest of your wholeness.

BOOKS FOR Y

This week's review

TITLE: The Miniaturist AUTHOR: Jessie Burton NUMBER OF PAGES: 432 EST. READ TIME: 8 hours and 47 minutes PRICE: $15 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Set in the 17th century Petronella (Nella), an 18 year old girl has married a wealthy tradesman in Amsterdam names Johannes Brandt, whom Nella hardly knows. Once married, Nella moves from her poor countryside town to Amsterdam to live with Johannes, his sister Marin and their staff. Upon arrival, Nella is gifted a miniature replica of their home by her new husband. He is peculiar in his behaviour, distant. With no one to confide in Nella finds herself drawn to the inner workings of the miniature dollhouse. Miniature figures for the home begin arriving unannounced from town and eerily start to foreshadow future events. Who is sending the miniatures and what does it all mean? WHO IT'S FOR: Readers who usually enjoy period dramas e.g. Downton Abbey, Tulip Fever and Pride & Prejudice. You become totally immersed in 17th century Amsterdam. WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: The way Jessie Burton writes reminded me a lot of Harry Potter with it’s magical undertones. You never quite know whether you can trust a character and the novel surprises you after each chapter. The Miniaturist keeps you guessing and is an interesting insight in old school Amsterdam and the way they used to trade goods. NOTABLE QUOTE:“Growing older does not seem to make you more certain, Nella thinks. It simply presents you with more reasons for doubt.”

Traditional Neapolitan Puttanesca sauce

BY ALESSANDRA PAPAZZO @SOULKITCHENSTORIES INGREDIENTS • • • • •

Neapolitan Puttanesca Sauce x 4 people 1 clove of garlic 3 tins of Diced Tomatoes 50gr of capers 40 black olives, pitted kalamata

• • •

Extra virgin olive oil (Be generous) Salt if needed, check at end of cooking, as capers are salty Basil

METHOD Soul Kitchen Stories, was born from Alessandra’s desire to share a love and passion for cooking which has been a part of her life ever since she can remember. It is a bit of Napoli mixed with rest of the world plus passion, love, patience, curiosity and humility. Alessandra’s Grandma’s influence added to her own vibe and is simple yet nourishing.

Pour some extra virgin olive oil in a saucepan, remember to be generous with that, then add garlic, capers and start frying for few minutes, after a bit add the diced tomatoes, stir, cook for 10 minutes on a slow medium heat. Add the black olives and cook for extra 10 minutes. Then take away

from the heat, check if it’s salty and top with some basil leaves. Your delicious sauce is ready to top your pasta, meat, fish or tofu. Buon Appetito

Q&A A Q U IC K C H

A T W IT H .. .

Jess Leitmanis @JESSLEITMANIS

TELL US ABOUT ‘EXCAVATIONS OF THE DEEP’ PROJECT? It

is a series of woven sculptures created from marine debris rope. I’m exploring the interconnected nature of our environment and our thoughts.

WHAT INSPIRED THIS CONCEPT? I’m interested in the

overflow of societies ‘stuff’. I’m also intrigued by human values and the compounding of our choices across decades… How has that led to the place we now find ourselves? We’re a throw away society suffering from a disconnect from the full lifespan of our ‘things’; from production through to ‘away’ post-discard. I’m playing with the idea of archaeology, to reflect on the present from a distant time.

HOW DID YOU ACQUIRE THE MATERIAL FOR THE SCULPTURES AND HOW IS THIS BUILT INTO THE STORY YOU ARE TELLING? I’ve travelled to some extremely remote locations in Australia with beach clean up organisations (Cape York aka. croc country with Clean Coast Collective, and rugged South West Tasmania with South West Marine Debris Clean Up). I love that the rope has stories of it’s own… Its battered and faded demeanor tell tales of a life at sea, but also the pervasive degradation of a misplaced inorganic object.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT CONSUMER CULTURE FROM THIS WORK? It’s currently an unsustainable practice. Fortunately we have the technology and capacity to create a world with comprehensively considered, sustainable design solutions. We don’t need to give up stuff… We just need to choose smarter for the earth if we want to rock through a few more millennia.

WILL YOU STICK TO THIS MEDIUM?Yes, it’s got me. I have many more ideas, and hundreds of kg of rope!! … But I’m very conscious to contain the micro-plastics and wear a mask when working with this sketchy sailor. Check out some of Jess’s work at jessicaleitmanis.com
