YEAR,

ANOTHER

Splendour! If you’re keen to start the party early, the Beach Hotel’s pre-Splendour bash kicks off from noon today. Later on, you can catch Canadian DJ Super Glue hit the decks at Woody’s Surf Shack. Support acts get the party going from 9pm, with the night raging on until 3am (tickets $20 on the door). Splendour itself has a cracking lineup this year, with Khalid and Lorde headlining on Friday, Hilltop Hoods and Vampire Weekend on Saturday, and Kendrick Lamar closing the show on Sunday. And it looks like we might not need our raincoats this year – according to the forecast at press time, at least.

Week

If you could use a giggle on Monday, there’s a pop-up comedy night hosted by Mandy Nolan at Club Lennox from 8pm, with Mandy joining local funny man Paul McMahon and five hot new stand-up talents on the stage (tickets $10 on the door). And for those who still have a few dance moves left after the weekend, Temple Byron (46 Melaleuca Drive) will be holding a No Lights, No Lycra event on Tuesday. Held in the dark, this hour-long, free-form dancing session kicks off at 6:45pm, and only costs a fiver for newbies ($10 for everyone else).

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

AS ALWAYS BETWEEN ECLIPSES, THIS

can be an intense and challenging time. Water or earth signs especially may have to deal with letting go of the old and making room for the new. This can be a potentially painful process, depending on attachments and the ability to adjust to shifting realities. Friday and Saturday might feel particularly tense! From Sunday evening onwards the mood is more friendly, inspiring and inclusive, due to a Venus/Jupiter sextile. On Monday the Sun moves into expressive and creative Leo. Make time for fun, play and entertainment in the next month, and watch how that uplifts your everyday experience. A Venus/ Neptune opposition is building (exact on Wednesday); confusion and errors of judgement may lead to disappointment within yourself or with someone close to you. Be especially alert on Wednesday when a situation may change rapidly and require an immediate, courageous but cool-headed response. It is also a good idea to start preparing for the next Mercury retrograde period, which starts on the 27th of July and lasts for 3 weeks. It is a potentially frustrating time, with Mars and most of the outer planets in retrograde motion. Back up your electronic devices, make sure your car is in good condition and revise plans and ambitions. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

The 4 of Cups sends a message of caution: when you are too self-absorbed, you might miss the gift of the moment. This is easily done if you are overly eager to get what you want and you forget to appreciate what goodness is already in your life.

h TAURUS

The Princess of Wands indicates that it is counterproductive to push for big results or fast developments this week. Don’t worry if you don’t see progress, and rest assured that a lot of transformation is going on in the unseen and will manifest in reality when the time is ripe.

i GEMINI

The Magician’s great communication skills are his biggest asset; he combines them with total focus and excellent timing to produce magical results. He inspires mental alertness and concentration, therefore making anything possible this week! You may be able to create miracles and surprise yourself.

j CANCER

The Death Tarot card speaks of profound change that often starts with the destruction of the status quo to make room for the new. If you resist this necessary transformation or metamorphosis, you create prolonged pain and frustration. Things work better if you can adjust relatively quickly and keep flexible.

BY GISELA

k LEO

c SAGITTARIUS

l VIRGO

d CAPRICORN

The 4 of Disks describes the dilemma that you may experience when you have to assert yourself and set clear boundaries, but at the same time, don’t want to put people off. If you demand compliance you might regret it later, especially when it leads to isolation from family or friends.

The 7 of Wands indicates a challenge that you choose to accept courageously. You might be surprised at how much you actually enjoy flexing your muscles, showing your strength and standing up for yourself. And besides, you can’t keep everyone happy all the time anyway…

a LIBRA

The Knight of Disks points to the very mundane elements of life; e.g. routine, daily chores and general hard work that might make you weary. He encourages you to keep your commitments, keep plodding along and making gradual but secure progress, even if it gets a bit boring at times…

b SCORPIO

The Ace of Cups symbolises the abundant feelings of the open and trusting heart. Any relationship can be enhanced, healed or become more whole this week. When in doubt, ask yourself: what would love do?

The Prince of Cups represents the lover within; he asks you to accept yourself unconditionally with all your light and darkness. Can you find as much compassion for your trials and tribulations as you find for others’? If you can, this may be a highly romantic and/or creative week!

The Temperance Tarot card describes the process of synergy; basically it is about finding out what the two opposite ends of a stick have in common. This week you are challenged to find the sweet spot between all these seeming polarities that appear in your life, e.g. work and play, or freedom and security…

e AQUARIUS

The Star Tarot card implies a great unfolding. As a visionary, you trust your intuition and you have the ability to actualise your ideas and dreams. You draw opportunities and people towards you, and others enjoy the company of someone who is upbeat, radiant and natural.

f PISCES

The Ace of Disks promises a great deal of successful manifestation this week. Things that might have been cooking for a long time, may turn out exactly how you envisioned them. This does not happen by magic; it is the end result of a committed and realistic approach to your affairs.

DEAR KEENWA, I have a raw cake addiction. It's only one per day, but at nine bucks a slice, that's a quarter of my rent! The thing is, the slices last week were cut significantly smaller, but charged the same steep price. Inflation or pilfer? Any idea how to break the addiction? I've already quit sugar, so it can't be that as these are all natural ingredients. - Naked Purse

DEAR NAKED PURSE, Have you tried making those things? It's so simple! You only have to soak the cashews overnight and whip them into that velvety cream cheese frosting, put it in and out of the freezer a billion times, whilst you whip another week's worth of rent into the base. Don't get me started on the berries... And voila there's your homemade raw vegan cake. If you can stop dry reaching when you look at the light brown curdled tofu-ish creation, then I'd say your addiction is broken.

DEAR KEENWA, I love the nude beach at Tyagrah. I'm there to commune with nature, free my menstrual blood, and howl with the moon rise, not pick-up. Why the other nudies gotta be so creepy? They interrupt my spiritual practices, which has forced me to take my nudity to clothed regions. I don't want to cop a fine for freedom, because of their creepiness. What to do? - Natural Born Killa

DEAR NATURAL BORN KILLA, Two words for you. Yeast infection. Get an integrated holistic doctor in the Shire to give you a medical certificate that prescribes sun therapy down there. When the arresting officer arrives you might like to offer them a close up inspection of your condition, whilst reminding them that exposing your genitals to others may be illegal, but skinny dipping where no one is around to witness, certainly is not. Or as Snoop Dog would say, the punishment don't fit the crime.

GENERAL MANAGER

One of Byron Bay’s busiest late night venues is searching high and low for an outstanding General Manager to lead our team. The successful candidate has 5+ years of industry experience, worldclass customer service skills and the ability to build culture and lead a team in a late night, high volume, high speed environment.

This week's mantra BALANCE IS BULLSHIT.

What's with our obsession with "balance?" The fabricated and fictitious “work/life balance.” The mythical “motherhood/career balance”. How we sigh and say “just trying to find the balance.” Can I just say, this is a bunch of bullshit? We’re chasing some made-up idea of a momentary position of proportionate perfection where everything is evenly lined up, weighed, measured, and distributed, tit for tat. It’s an impossible goal, the pursuit of which is a recipe for guilt, overwhelm and feelings of failure. (Not to mention joy-killing and intuition-smothering.) And yet, we keep torturing ourselves, setting our sights on “balance” in work/life, family/career, health/pleasure. The satisfaction we're searching for is integration. We desperately want to all of the different parts of our life make sense together. We yearn to be the expression of integration that nature intended: Everchanging. Metamorphic. Whole. The natural world offers us instruction: Nature doesn’t languish or suffer in an effort to strike a balance. Nature doesn’t divorce it’s dichotomies, weighing and measuring Winter and Summer against one another. Nature freezes and becomes still, bursts forth into bloom, goes to seed, giving itself over to the pulsing cadence of life. Feasting, fasting, producing, resting. The cycles complete themselves, creating an overall evenness. As human beings, our innate rhythm is the same. Life is seasonal. Bodies are cyclical. Emotions are tidal. Creativity and energy and appetites wax and wane. So screw the scales. Balance can bugger off. Stop trying to calculate everything in neat columns or tidy weighs and measures. Embrace the changing tides of energy, abundance, and inner resources. Ride the tide of your humanness.

Skills required include: venue management staff training beverage knowledge + cocktail expertise computer and reporting proficiency cash handling experience Previous experience in a similar role is essential. We offer a stellar work environment, an excellent wage and solid staff benefits, not to mention the opportunity to live and work in one the best places in the world. BOOKS FOR Y

This week's review

TITLE: Boy Erased: A Memoir of Identity, Faith and Family

AUTHOR: Garrard Conley NUMBER OF PAGES: 352 EST. READ TIME: 7 hours and 9 minutes PRICE: $18.00 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Garrard Conley, the child of a

Baptist pastor is discovered to be gay by his family in an unfortunate series of events. In the struggle to be accepted by his parents and community Garrard agrees to partake in ‘gay conversion therapy’ through an institutionalized twelve step therapy program. The experience is confronting, traumatic and cultish. Garrard begins to question his faith and upbringing as he battles judgement from everyone in his circle. Through his therapy Conley discovers that his identity is more complicated than he ever could’ve imagined and the love of family runs deep.

WHO IT'S FOR: Everyone and anyone. Boy Erased is an

important book in our current political and social climate.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: It’s a stark reminder that

prejudice still exists against the LGBTQ community and there are people struggling each day to be understood and accepted. When reading Boy Erased I thought that we are all working with the tools we were given as children and must navigate the challenges of our world the best way we can. The book is a true story, heartbreakingly true, and has been made into a movie - due for release this year.

NOTABLE QUOTE: “I came to therapy thinking that my sexuality didn’t matter, but it turned out that every part of my personality was intimately connected. Cutting one piece damaged the rest.” This week's review written by Jessie Hilton @jessieahilton

PLASTIC FREE Mermaid Healthy choices, healthy body, healthy oceans With Kate Nelson

HERE ARE SOME MORE HECTIC STATS TO SUPPORT YOUR PLASTIC FREE JULY COMMITMENT. •

Approximately 1 million sea birds die every year from plastic.

Plastics kill so many animals because they take so long to disintegrate. An animal that dies from plastic will decompose yet the plastics remain. Eventually wash away and another animal could fall victim to the same plastics

There are 5 ocean gyres in the oceans where plastic gathers due to current circulation. These gyres contain millions of pieces of plastic and our wildlife feed in these grounds.

It costs US$4,000 to recycle 1 tonne of plastic bags and you get a product that can be sold on the commodities market for US$32. Recycling has never been a complete solution. It was created to make us feel better about the waste we created as we consumed more and more convenient plastic items. We cannot rely on recycling, we must simply use less plastics.

For decades China has been the global buyer for recyclables, including all of the US and Australia’s plastics. China stopped accepting our recyclables in December of last year. Most plastics that could be recycled are now ending up in landfill.

Knowledge is power! If you’re motivated to make a switch away from plastics, check out @ plasticfreemermaid or iquitplastics.com for more tips.

Traditional Neapolitan Genovese

BY ALESSANDRA PAPAZZO @SOULKITCHENSTORIES INGREDIENTS (FOR 2X PEOPLE) • • • •

500gr of Beef (Subscapulars, underside of the blade) 1kg of Brown Onions 1 Big carrot 1 Big stem of Celery and leaves

• •

Extra virgin olive oil (Be generous) Salt

METHOD • Soul Kitchen Stories, from my neapolitan heart is born from my desire to share my love and passion for cooking. It has been a part of my life ever since I can remember. It is a bit of Napoli mixed with rest of the world plus passion, love, patience, curiosity and humility. My Grandma’s influence added to my own vibe, blended by the rest of the world. Simple yet nourishing.

22 BYRON BAZAAR

Cut the carrots and the celery in small pieces, the onions in quarters and place them in a saucepan, big in height and width. Add lots of oil to the pan and start cooking on a slow medium heat. While cooking, cut the meat in small pieces and when the onions are a bit softer add all the meat and stir a bit. Leave it to cook for a 2/3 hours on a slow heat but check and stir

here and there and add salt. When almost all the onions have become “una crema” not to misunderstand with the word “cream” but like a sauce and the meat is soft and tender and almost breaks by itself the Genovese Sauce is ready! You can have like this or add to your pasta like we do in Naples. Mammamia!

Q&A A Q U IC K C H

A T W IT H .. .

Darcy from Seaside the band @HEYSEASIDE

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE BAND AND HOW YOU MET?

The band formed early 2016, Chris and I had been dating 3 years, Tom and I had been friends for years and Chris met our old guitarist Brady while working in a shop in town. The pieces fit together perfectly so we started Seaside. Brady left the band a few months ago and Froggy (Josh) joined!

YOU’VE BEEN DESCRIBED AS DREAMY-INDIE-POP VIBES. DO YOU AGREE? I would have to agree, yes. For ages we

had no specific genre, we all came from such different musical backgrounds bringing to the table an eclectic mix, it took a little while to form a set sound but once we started jamming more indie dream pop vibes we realised that was the direction we wanted to take Seaside. WHAT WAS IT LIKE STARTING OUT IN BYRON BAY? This town has an amazing creative community, and a really great music scene. Starting out and booking shows was very much who we knew and word of mouth, we are so thankful to everyone who gave us an opportunity to play a show when they had barely heard our music. WHAT INSPIRES YOUR SONG WRITING? I write all the lyrics and vocal melodies, to be honest I draw inspiration from almost anything. Sometimes it’s so random that I’ll overhear someone say something in the street and I think ‘oh that’s actually really interesting, how can I write a song about this?’

CONGRATULATIONS ON WINNING THE TRIPLE J UNEARTHED COMPETITION TO PLAY BYRON SPLENDOUR. HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT THE GIG? I can’t even explain the range

of emotions I feel when I think about how blessed we are to have won this. I am nervous, excited, super emotional in a good way, so proud of us and also so incredibly grateful. What an amazing opportunity to give to a band, we are absolutely over the moon and so determined to play with all our hearts. You can catch Seaside at Splendour on Saturday.
