WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP
stop deforestation? Plenty, according to the Nature Conservation Council of NSW, which is bringing its Towards Zero Deforestation roadshow to Byron tonight. Register for the free info night via Eventbrite, and be at Marvell Hall for 7pm to learn about how we can work together to call for stronger laws on nature.

The Beach Hotel’s free monthly movie night also rolls around tonight, with Searching for Sugar Man screening from 7pm. If you’ve never seen this cult documentary about two South Africans who go in search of a brilliant early ‘70s musician from Detroit rumoured to have died, this is the perfect opportunity. Up early on Saturday? Look up at 6:21am to catch a total lunar eclipse. On Sunday morning, it’s over to Bangalow’s A&I Hall for the latest instalment of the Bangalow Fashion Market from 9am-2pm; $2 entry. In the afternoon, Aussie legend David Helfgott returns to Byron with his inimitable interpretations of Chopin, Liszt, and Mussorgsky’s extraordinary cycle of pieces based on works of art. Tickets for the 3pm performance at Byron Theatre cost $40 – if there are any left.

DEAR KEENWA, My baby dadda and I practice conscious uncoupling. But last week he gave the kids red fire engines. You know the ones, that make children bounce around and scream fire, and wail loudly well into the night, past their bedtime? It's clear that we have two different parenting styles. Any tips on bi-parenting?. - Not Expecting what I was Expecting
DEAR NOT EXPECTING WHAT I WAS EXPECTING, In the online Conscious Uncoupling manual (that I did not purchase due to outstanding child support dollars) it states that, "In a nutshell, a break-up is nothing short of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have a complete spiritual awakening."Can you see these walls as doors? Could you use the late night hyperactive behaviour as a chance to confront your own unresolved anger a-la Osho meditation practice? Obvs if you still got along, you'd be bi-parenting under the same roof, and still bitching like the other 50% of Australians.
DEAR KEENWA, I joined the Byron Facebook community page mainly to stay educated about chem trails, and figure out finally if the earth is flat, as well as occasionally moan about Byron roads (I am totally spiritual, but also human), but so many blow-ins are in the group looking for holiday lunch recs and secret waterfalls. Are we not safe from tourism anywhere in The Shire? - Go Back to Where You Came From
DEAR GO BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM, I watched an interesting talk at the Sydney Writer's Festival (an event I found out about on the Sydney community Facebook page) that reiterated that Australia is a nation with an identity tied to boats, and that until we revisit the first boatload that arrived in 1788 and the honest impact that had for the only non-boat people here, First Australians, our country can not reconcile. I guess that includes listening to the boat people of Byron complain about snoring in the backpacker hostels.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST
ANOTHER BIG WEEK! ON FRIDAY
Mercury in Leo begins his three week retrograde stint. This is the perfect time to rethink or rearrange a creative project, but not launch something new. Questions regarding your heart’s desire or well-being might have to be addressed, and tempers might flare up as some people get fired up about delays, detours or misinformation. This time Mercury retrograde may be especially frustrating because Mars, the planet for energy and directed action is also retrograde, as well as Saturn, Chiron, Neptune and Pluto. Be prepared for an intense lead up to the weekend; Friday’s Sun/ Mars opposition is rather volatile and might bring tense situations to a breaking point during the Full Moon which is exact at 6:20 am on Saturday. The lunar eclipse is visible that morning from about 4 am. A Venus/ Pluto earth trine, also on Saturday, suggests staying practical and as grounded as possible. However it is important to express your strong and profound feelings; bottling up inner tensions will most likely lead to what you want to avoid most – an explosion. A square between Mars retrograde and Uranus is building (exact next Thursday) and could throw a spanner in even the best-oiled works! If you encounter obstacles during this week, your best bet is to surrender gracefully, at least for now! For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

With the 3 of Cups drawn your energy is so upbeat and radiant that you may defy all trouble with your open heart and your willingness to share good feelings. You might be supporting your community with a great team spirit, and inspiring others to do the same.
The Temperance Tarot card suggests avoiding all excess this week and practicing detachment or retreat into your private sphere, as methods for accomplishing inner balance. Avoid noisy places or distractions and allow some time to gaze inward to recharge your batteries.
i GEMINI
The 3 of Swords represents the mind’s habit of holding on to past grievances and reliving old pain. This week you definitely fare better if you stay present in the moment and focus on kindness, mindfulness and gratitude towards the things that are working out for you.
j CANCER
The Hanged Man appears when it is time to gain a new perspective that will lead to different choices in the near future. For now allow yourself to be totally absorbed by this process that turns your world around and inside out. Surrender, let go and be open to your new perceptions.

BY GISELA
The 10 of Disks speaks of success in business and emphasises communication and organising skills. Mixed with a bit of charm it’s an irresistible and persuasive formula. Nevertheless this is not the time to take big risks; rather stick to the tried and true.
The 6 of Swords describes a potentially difficult transition phase during which you are challenged to objectively evaluate where you stand. This may lead to new goals and moving away from who you used to be towards who you really want to be, but with as little stress as possible.
a LIBRA
The 2 of Disks is a reminder of the fact that change is the only constant in life. It suggests flowing and responding to varying circumstances in a welcoming and open manner. The more you get into it and have fun juggling different aspects of your life, the better the rewards.
b SCORPIO
The 6 of Disks pictures the satisfaction and accomplishment that comes when you acknowledge quietly how far you have come. From this place it is even more rewarding to share your resourcefulness and knowledge with others, but without giving unsolicited advice!
c SAGITTARIUS
The Magician focuses, very much like the Archer, intensively on his goal; his timing and concentration are impeccable. Much can be achieved this week, with seemingly little effort. Deep inside however, you know how much practice and perseverance was needed to get to this kind of mastery of manifestation.
d CAPRICORN
The Princess of Cups represents your very sensitive and intuitive nature that you might choose to keep hidden behind a mask of strength, authority and efficiency most of the time. But what a relief it is to be able to drop the façade and allow your very feminine nature to come out and play!
e AQUARIUS
The 2 of Cups symbolises love in action, which is grounded in an attitude that benevolently embraces light and shadow, without judgement. With Mars the warrior archetype retrograde in your sign, you may re-evaluate your relationship to your very own individual and unique flavour of male, directed energy, and find new ways to utilise it.
f PISCES
The 7 of Wands is a card of encouragement and provides emotional strength and backbone, in times when you have to endure pressure. Hold onto your authenticity and remember what you stand for. Maybe a brave action is required to make things clear.

This week's mantra
TUITION PAID TO THE SCHOOL OF LIFE.
Be it a floundering business, an unproductive investment, a dwindling romance, a pear-shaped partnership, or an unpublished manuscript, saying sayonara to sunk costs of money, time and energy that produced no fruit can feel like a kick in the guts. Sometimes we’re so embarrassed or ashamed that we’re afraid of walking away. So we keep throwing good money (or time, or love) after bad, frozen in a failing situation. Or we’re petrified to make another move because we’ve given ourselves a vote of no-confidence.

IRONING PROFESSIONALLY DONE
Affordable prices start as little as $45 for a min. 2HRS when you just can't find time to get your ironing done. Please call Cris on 0406 135 820
But sunk costs don’t have to sink you. Here’s a reframe: It wasn’t a loss at all. It was a gain. Any time you fail, you earn yourself a degree. And the money you lost, the time you spent, the energy you gave, that’s all just tuition paid to the school of life. An investment in your education. You gained knowledge, experience, insight. Maybe failure actually paved the way toward long-term success. Maybe you’re more discerning about who to trust with your ideas, money or time. Maybe you know better now, so you can do better next. So don’t get hung up on a number being in the red, or a partnership that wasn’t a hit, or the book that needs to be rewritten, or the million dollar idea that didn’t add up, or an investment that went wobbly and capsized. It’s just the price you paid for skills, wisdom and know-how. As long as you use these earned assets in whatever comes next, it’s a net gain. So keep going. Stop letting sunk costs sink your self-worth. Pay your tuition to the school of life and move on with the courage, creativity, and confidence of someone who is exceptionally well educated. Earn that PhD, boo. You got this.

This week's review
TITLE: The Immortalists AUTHOR: Chloe Benjamin NUMBER OF PAGES: 352 EST. READ TIME: 6 hours and 39 minutes PRICE: $25.00 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: How would you live your life if
you knew the date of your death? The Immortalists poses this question as it’s characters, four siblings who live in New York City, are told of their futures by a mysterious woman. As the novel unfolds we follow the children as they grow into adults and are living with this confronting information. Relationships are tested as each of the siblings hold the knowledge of their death date close to their chests. Some are wasteful and others are encouraged to live life to the fullest.
WHO IT'S FOR: Those who enjoy fantasy stories and
family drama. If you have siblings then it’ll add to your enjoyment of reading this book.
WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: It makes you think and challenges you to ask whether, if you were given the opportunity, you’d want to know when you were to die and how you’d live life from there. What would you change? What would you do differently? Chloe Benjamin explores the uncertainty of life and the unbreakable bond of a group of siblings.
NOTABLE QUOTE: “She'll tell herself that what she really
wanted was not to live forever, but to stop worrying. 'What if I change?' she asked the fortune teller, all those years ago, sure that knowledge could save her from bad luck and tragedy. 'Most people don't,' the woman said.”

PLASTIC FREE Mermaid Healthy choices, healthy body, healthy oceans With Kate Nelson
HERE ARE SOME AUSTRALIA SPECIFIC STATISTICS TO SUPPORT YOUR PLASTIC FREE JULY COMMITMENT. •
Australia alone uses 6.9 billion plastic bags a year and 3.6 billion of these are plastic shopping bags.
•
These bags could wrap around the planet 42.5 times.
•
Australians dump 36,700 tonnes of plastic bag waste (4,000 bags per minute or 230,000 per hour) into the landfill every year.
•
Each year it costs the Australian government over $4 million to clean up plastic bag litter.
•
If each Australian family used 1 less plastic bag each week that would be 253 million bags less a year.
•
Less than 1% of plastic bags in Australia are reused.
•
Australians spend more than half a billion dollars a year on bottled water.
•
Producing and delivering a litre of bottled water can emit hundreds of times more greenhouse gases than a litre of tap water.
•
Australia’s annual use of bottled water emits over 60,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions, equal to what 13,000 cars generate in one year.
•
Just manufacturing 1 tonne of PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) produces ~ 3 tons of CO2.
We are too late to properly clean it up. We are too late to undue the past decades of waste. We can prevent further pollution. We can drastically alter our personal contribution. Give up as many plastics as you can. You can do it! I did.

Clare Kearney @HUNDE.AU
HOW DID YOU GET INTO NUTRITION FOR ANIMALS? I got
a dog. I was very interested in my own nutrition and was eating lots of fresh, healthy foods, so it just didn’t make sense to me that my dog would eat this highly processed, mono-food every day for the rest of his life. From there I studied animal nutrition and began trying to educate as many animal lovers as possible about the potential of whole foods for our pets.
WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTIONS PET OWNERS HAVE ABOUT THEIR PET’S DIET? That processed pet food
is good for them. But we’ve been sold this message for so long, I totally understand why people believe it.
KARRIE HAYWARD SINGLE LAUNCH
Centrepiece Single Launch - Heartspace Byron Bay - 28th July - $5 Entry - Supports: Boatkeeper/ Silk N Oak - Come party with us! www.karriehayward.com
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE A HEALTHY ANIMAL DIET? A healthy diet for animals is one that supports their digestive capabilities and meets their nutritional needs, ideally through a variety of fresh, whole foods.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS THAT MY DOG’S DIET NEEDS IMPROVING? Itchy, dry, dull skin, greasy and smelly
coats, bad breath and tooth decay, stinky farts, lots of shedding, sensitive tummies and food intolerances, sore joints and even behavioural issues can all be symptoms of a poor diet.
WHY IS MY DOG ALWAYS HUNGRY? Some dogs are
just little piggies, but if they’re not getting a steady supply of living nutrients from their food, it makes sense that they would always be looking for them elsewhere.
WHAT’S YOUR FAV DOG BREED AND WHY? Rescue Kelpie. My boy Tex Perkins is so clever and sweet.
BEST PLACE TO HANG WITH YOUR DOG IN BYRON? You can’t beat a sunrise run at Belongil. To find out more visit hunde.com.au
