This week's review
TITLE: Educated AUTHOR: Tara Westover NUMBER OF PAGES: 352 EST. READ TIME: 7 hours and 3 minutes PRICE: $25.90 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Educated is the coming-of-age
memoir by Tara Westover, one of seven children and the daughter of Mormon parents. Tara grew up on the outskirts of a small town in rural America. Her father, a believer in the ‘end of days’, decided that rather than send his seven children to regular school he would homeschool them in the ideologies of fundamentalist Mormonism. Throughout the years Tara learns that knowledge is power and manages to assimilate herself into the local school and community, much to the disgust of her parents. With an education, she must decide whether to alienate herself from those who raised her or begin a journey on her own without them.
WHO IT'S FOR: Lovers of a memoir and creepy cult
stories (or those who’ve just watched Wild Wild Country on Netflix).
WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Educated is a love letter to
family. Although we can’t choose them, we can choose the power they hold over our lives and our hearts. Tara Westover impeccably describes her struggle to be accepted amongst her brainwashed family as we follow her through a tale of self discovery. Its, at times, hard to believe this story is true.
NOTABLE QUOTE: “You can love someone and still
choose to say goodbye to them.” she says now. “You can miss a person every day, and still be glad that they are no longer in your life.”

THURSDAY MAY BE A PARTICULARLY
irritating day! A square between Mars (retrograde in Aquarius) and Uranus (Taurus) has been building for days and is exact now. These two forces have a tendency to act in a quite fixated way. Therefore sudden chaotic eruptions of will or ego that might have been suppressed for a while seek release, but at the same time there is also a stubborn resistance against any change of habit or perspective. Avoid pushing yourself or others; it won’t work! Since we are in the middle of a Mercury retrograde period as well, there could be misunderstandings, recurring arguments or delays and costly detours concerning travel arrangements. On Saturday a Mars/ Chiron sextile might bring an opportunity for healing a chronically inflamed relationship or identity crisis. Venus moves into cooperative and tolerant Libra on Tuesday where she resides for about a month. She puts a much needed emphasis on harmonious and balanced relating. This is also a great time for beautifying your home environment and for all arts or crafts. During the next few days however, some people might be seduced into boisterous behaviour, while the Sun unites with Mercury retrograde and squares Jupiter. Impatience may also be an issue, but any attempt to quickly ‘fix’ or change a situation might not bring the desired results, especially if your action is born out of desperation. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

The 6 of Swords illustrates that a group effort, especially if there is a shared and agreed goal, can overcome difficulties more easily than just one person can. Mental clarity, straightforward communication and cooperation are the ingredients to smooth the way ahead.
The 8 of Disks comes as a reminder not to rush into new situations or push hard against any resistance this week. You fare much better if you work patiently and meticulously. A concentrated effort and attention to details that are so easily overlooked, pays off big time soon.
With the Chariot Tarot card drawn a new chapter dawns. It might be as subtle as mustering the inner strength to eliminate a non-productive habit; or it might be as big as going for what you want in every aspect of your life. The confidence and determination are the same; you see the changes you make right through to the end!
The Magician Tarot card promises great outcomes for this week. Your ability to analyse a situation, get organised and apply your great communication skills may create magical results this week. Trust yourself, stay focused and utilise your intuitive and perceptive powers.
i GEMINI
The Princess of Wands is the archetype of a free and youthful spirit. She has worked on her emotional and spiritual liberation in such a dedicated way, that now she expresses herself without fear in any situation. How invigorating it is to not worry about what others think of you!
The danger of the 5 of Swords lies in mental overactivity that may keep you trapped in a negative loop. Add some pressure or demands of the world around you and you could easily lose sight of the many things in your life that actually are working out just fine. Dedicate a little time to practice gratitude; it will brighten your day.
j CANCER
The Ace of Cups promises an emotionally fulfilling week with great vibes all around you. When your cup is full and your heart is overflowing, everyone that comes in contact with you feels a bit of upliftment, which in turn elevates your mood even more.
The Bay Sitters are a team of Byron Bay’s best babysitters! Reliable, affordable, fully certified and experienced. Call or text Ally on 0434 613 174 www.thebaysitters.com

The 2 of Cups inspires loving action all the way, every day. It starts with your unconditional acceptance of yourself, including all the bits that you’d rather keep hidden. With regained trust and openness it is easy to keep strong connections to the people you love. It also relieves you from much judgment about people you don’t agree with.
The Star Tarot nudges you to see yourself as a radiant light-being. What would change in your life if you do? Maybe your confidence and natural charisma would magnetise and attract people and opportunities that allow you to actualise more of your creative ideas and visions?
The Fool Tarot card appears when it is time to listen to and follow your heart’s desire, even though your rational mind might be very used to finding plenty of reasons to not go for it. Here is a chance to give birth to new ways of being from a place of courage, wonder and childlike anticipation.
e AQUARIUS
With the Princess of Disks drawn in combination with Mars’ retrograde motion in your sign, you might feel like nothing much is happening. But deeply hidden in the unseen, a unique transformation is taking place and will manifest in reality as early as mid-September.
f PISCES
The 8 of Swords represents inner turmoil and confusion. If you are in doubt, it is important to consider different options and to postpone making decisions until you feel more clear and confident. Don’t over-analyse things, rather pay attention to how your heart feels.

TREE AND GARDEN SERVICES BYRON
I have been practising Plastic Free July for the whole month diligently (check my Insta account if you don't believe me), and giving myself a mighty pat on the back each night, but I must confess, I attended Splendour in the Grass last weekend and in my haste to leave my pash n dash, left behind my blowup flamingo, polyester swag sheets, Aldi tent, and a bucket of sparkly make-up. So did 40,000 other people. Do you have any suggestions on how to live with my guilt? - Millennial Madness

How bout you take that floppy hipster hat off your empty head, and start a collection drive. Go and visit each of the attendees, so that they like you, may learn the art of giving something back to the town that they so enjoyed taking from. Perhaps if there's enough leftover after the rubbish collection, you could fix the damn roads.
DEAR KEENWA, I'm gluten-free, fin-free, lactose-free, and shave-free. I genuinely care about the environment (not just to get chicks) yet I'm scaring myself; tell me, have I become the very Byron squirrel I so despise? I thought they were on the way out. How to sleep again at night? Secret Squirrel
DEAR SECRET SQUIRREL, Oh, you are a hybrid bunch, cock-deep in the privilege of choice - part hippy or part hobo? Part startup owner or Cenno lover? Which is why I've called in the Fab Five for some much needed assistance. Talk about crisis! Who better than the Queer Eye mob to work with you on the trauma of your personal contribution to globalisation. I only pray that the stigma against the squirrel will be broken down for viewers at home, myself included, and that you can find peace with your internal prejudice, and come out of your burrow where you've been hiding once and for all, because I mean what would happen to all those micro-breweries and cute boutique Airbnb's if the squirrel faces extinction?

This week's mantra YOUR PHONE IS FRONTIN’
Nothing good can come of you checking your phone first thing. Nothing. Think about it. When was the last time you cracked into your phone first thing in the morning and felt super jazzed about what you saw? Like, “YAAAS! THAT IS GREAT NEWS. I am feeling GOOD about myself!” Dude, when you pick up your phone first thing, you don’t give yourself a fighting chance at a good day. The truth is, nothing derails a good day faster than a premature procession of stressful work-related emails, a parade of negative news, or a dose of social media induced self-doubt. I know it’s hard to resist. Because your devices and apps have been designed very purposefully to hook your attention and make you a fiend for your phone. But your phone is frontin’. It’s not all that. All the stories it tells you about URGENT! and IMPORTANT! aren’t true. If things are urgent, people will call. If things are important, you already know about them. So the choice is yours. Choose to roll over, reach for your phone and allow your day and your vibe to be dictated by a storm of anxiety, fear, worry, conflict and FOMO first thing. Or start your day on purpose. For that, I recommend meditation. Meditation allows you to establish yourself in the calm, stable centre of sovereignty and set out into your day with solid footing, a map of self-awareness, and a compass with the needle pointing towards your intentions. When the time comes for you to get your scroll on, you’ll find you aren’t easily triggered by what comes your way. It’s going to take some self-control, but you can do it. Make it an experiment. Check yourself before you wreck yourself...I mean, before you check your phone.

PLASTIC FREE Mermaid Healthy choices, healthy body, healthy oceans With Kate Nelson
PLASTIC FREE AUGUST? How did you go throughout Plastic Free July? Here is a reminder why we made the effort and a pep talk to keep these changes in place! We reconnected to a more natural way of life. We ate natural, whole fresh foods and avoided processed foods packaged in plastics full of unpronounceable ingredients designed merely to resemble food. We skipped hygiene and beauty products packed in plastic and opted to use natural, few ingredient personal products, like coconut oil and handmade soap. We quit the plastic containers, wrappers and products to avoid contaminants from the hormonealtering chemicals that leach into their contents. Motivated to continue this reduced use of plastics for the future generations who will not grow up with convenience of single-use plastics, instead acutely aware of waste and mindful of where it goes. Grandkids who will listen to our old-timer tales of what paradise used to look like, before plastic was invented to make one generation’s lives easier. We use less plastics today and tomorrow for the air we breathe. The water we drink. For the fresh food we eat which grows from healthy soil. Honoring this environment by making small sacrifices in our lives that can ripple outward to impact the greater good. We are a part of a greater movement. Keep doing your best and reducing your use of plastic. It is truly making a difference.

Kev Grover @GROVERALLMAN
YOU RUN AN ONLINE BUSINESS SPECIALISING IN CUSTOM GUITAR PICKS FROM THE BYRON HINTERLAND. HOW DID YOU GET INTO THIS? I came up with the idea of
producing Australia’s first guitar pick in 1992. All picks at that time were imported. The idea worked and here I am in Byron 70 million guitar picks later! DOES ANYONE FAMOUS USE YOUR PICKS? AC/DC, Rolling Stones, Pink, Rhianna, Keith Urban, Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne and so many more. We also supply our locals Parkway Drive and Byron Music and are represented in over 3500 retail outlets worldwide.
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO RUN A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS FROM HOME? I am involved in the marketing side of the company so I can be based anywhere, the Byron hinterland provides an environment free from distractions and allows “out of the box” thinking, our company has always been a leader and not a follower. The manufacturing facility is based in Adelaide.
YOU ALSO PROVIDE CONSULTING SERVICES TO STARTUPS. Something I really enjoy doing and getting exposed to a great cross section of businesses.
WHAT ARE SOME THEMES THAT COME OUT OF HELPING BUDDING ENTREPRENEURS? I was a board member for
the Entrepreneurs Organisation (EO) for many years. The common traits amongst its members were: 1. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes - just learn from them. 2. Network, network, network. 3. Determination.
WHAT HAVE YOU NOTICED ABOUT BYRON’S STARTUP SCENE? Byron has a very vibrant startup scene. I have met so many people doing amazing things. I like the fact that whilst Byron appearing a very laid back community the people are producing some great results.
WHEN YOU AREN’T WORKING, WHAT DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME DOING? I love listening to music, surfing and hiking. To see the full range or learn more visit groverallman.com.au
