Registered competitors score free entry to the Prawn Fest, too. G TO SAY?

PHONE HACK - ANONYMOUS I heard the other day that there are a large number of people that get bumped into by others that are scrolling on their phones whilst walking down the street. It is crazy that this has become such a newsworthy issue. I mean, I do see it all the time and I have been a victim once or twice before but for it to become such an epidemic is quiet scary. Can’t we stay off our phones long enough to get from point A to B without injuring others? What’s next, people driving on their phones?

HEALTHY TRICKS AND TREATS - ANONYMOUS I took my kids out for their first trick or treat experience around Byron. I made them some costumes out of recycled materials from Vinnie’s and we took to the streets, with a surprisingly large amount of other families in our court. The biggest surprise was the quality of 'treats' that the neighbours had prepared. Healthy, sugar and gluten free, packaged in cloth or paper. My kids also loved it. Ohhh I love Byron.

DEAR KEENWA, I think I'm going through a midlife crisis. It's been my childhood dream to be a librarian, and I think I'm finally ready to take the plunge. Any tips Keenwa? How can I make it happen? I am well-read, and have recently acquired glasses. Pleasure Your Shelf

DEAR PLEASURE YOUR SHELF, If you have spent any time on the Byron shelves lately you would have seen that our librarians are real life superheroes. I was once saved from a crazy lady screaming the whole place down because I had parked in the ten minute parking zone for four minutes, (No late fees here, I'm a super quick returner) whilst simultaneously shhhhing a nude selfie taker and explaining (in German) to a backpacker that the study corner was not an appropriate place to shave. Forget the English literature, I recommend a nursing degree or social work diploma, cross police academy training. These are all available online, and I heard that if you go into the park late at night, that there's someone selling the after hours wifi password.

DEAR KEENWA, The other night I went out looking for a feed with my missus. All the kitchen's were closed. It was 8.10pm, on a weekend! I know Mullum is the biggest littlest town in Australia but are they for real? Not only do they not open their kitchens until 6pm, but they deliver the bad news with a smug smile. I want to support local businesses but the relationship seems one-sided. Open Sesame

DEAR OPEN SESAME, Ok Mr Hangry, you might like to get your head out of your stomach for a moment and consider this: high rent, high wages, unpredictable touristic waves of clientele, overpriced imported food, globalisation, and all you're worried about is your appetite? Here's some advice for you. Grow your own damn food. Put a handmade pop-up restaurant sign out the front of your house, and sell these restaurants your produce at fair-trade prices so that they can afford to open for more than 120 minutes each night. Win, win. Bon appetite.

HEAVILY Meditated With Caitlin Cady

This week's mantra MAYBE FAILURE IS GOOD FORTUNE IN DISGUISE. What if "failure" isn't a failure, but rather a gift. What if failure is your teacher, instructing you on what is not for you, what not to do, who not to be, who not to be with. What if failure is opportunity. What if failure is freedom. What if we celebrated our failures rather than dismissing or hiding them. What if every failure was just guiding you to course correct and return back the slipstream of your soul. What if failure was redirecting your unique gifts in the most useful way possible. What would it feel like to relieve yourself of the burden of failure. What would it feel like to say "thank you" to the projects, ideas, plans and relationships that have failed.... Thank you for failing so that I might return to what works. Thank you for failing so that next time I know better. Thank you for failing so I am now crystal clear on what I do want...and what I don't want. Thank you for failing so that I am now free. Thank you for failing so that I might find my way to what is meant for me. Maybe failure was never an option. Because maybe failure is actually good fortune in disguise.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

A SATURN/URANUS FIRE TRINE THAT

has been with us all year is exact again on Saturday. Issues we were dealing with in mid-May or late last year might come up for revision. We are asked to find a new balance between taking care of our duties, while creating enough personal freedom to not feel suffocated by it all. Outdated habits and systems may have to be restructured and anything new and revolutionary is very appealing. Passionate ideas spark profound insights and spiritual growth; this could be a truly transformational week! On Monday Venus unites with Jupiter in Scorpio; this intensifies the above-mentioned process. Although desire, passion and obsessions can be intense, there is also a great potential for healing, regeneration or mysterious encounters. The transformational process of this week might bring a breakthrough concerning relationship issues; new beginnings are possible. Trouble could arise if there is a necessity to let go – not an easy thing to achieve while Sun, Venus and Jupiter reside in Scorpio. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

This week the 3 of Wands supports you to manifest your best and to be a shining example of a benevolent leader with foresight and insight. Your heart, mind and action are fully aligned and, because you don’t doubt yourself, no one else does.

h TAURUS

The Devil Tarot card indicates that you are stuck in a rut at least in one big area of your life. Whether it is about unhealthy habits, relationships or finances, this is the time to take stock, consider options and take action towards new lifestyle choices that express more of who you truly are.

i GEMINI

The Emperor symbolises structure and security; combined with the astrological flavour of this week, you may be challenged to bring more order and stability into your creative but chaotic world. It may start with organising your desk, your computer or your life…

j CANCER

When the Tower Tarot card appears your sense of security may be threatened by real or imagined events. Sudden changes or chaos can throw you into crisis, but they are also great ‘wake-up calls’ and instigate growth spurts! Transformation, healing, regeneration and letting go are the themes of this week.

BY GISELA

k LEO

The 10 of Swords may have a ‘wet blanket’ effect on many of your experiences this week. Negative thinking and focusing on ‘what if’ scenarios might keep you trapped in a downward spiral. Remember that this will pass too… One way to feel better instantly is to count your blessings and be grateful for them.

l VIRGO

The Strength Tarot card provides renewed zest for life, an unshakable belief in your mission and the inner determination to go for it. Now is the time to overcome old fears, curiously explore new territory, and regain a childlike, innocent sense of wonder and awe for the mystery of your life.

a LIBRA

With the Sun drawn for this week you have plenty of energy to shine your light forth brilliantly. You are able to motivate and inspire others to collaborative efforts, and great insight or even an intellectual breakthrough might occur. It’s also about feeling free and having fun…

b SCORPIO

The 7 of Swords shows how a limited mindset can set you up for failure. You might be clear on what you desire, but you keep telling yourself that it is impossible to achieve. The time is ripe to dive deeply into those beliefs that keep you separate from your longings and new beginnings.

c SAGITTARIUS

The Empress represents the Earth Mother; her nurturing and comforting energy infuses everything she touches with loving wisdom. This week you may find a new balance and learn about how to support yourself in equal proportion to how you serve others. This relieves you from the old habit of pushing yourself beyond exhaustion.

d CAPRICORN

With the Queen of Swords drawn the time is ripe to live your truth and to communicate it authentically. As you let go of any old masks that kept you safe but trapped, you find mental clarity and a great sense of liberation. A bit of uranian rebellion can be very constructive and gets the creative juices flowing.

e AQUARIUS

The 7 of Cups comes as a reminder to deeply connect with the true longings of your heart. No amount of overstimulation or indulgence provides you with more than short-lived, temporary relief. Now is the time to identify and overcome destructive habits and reboot your whole system.

f PISCES

The Queen of Disks would like to inspire you to nurture and care for your body in a new way. If you tend to neglect your body over your spirit, this is the time to find a new balance and respect your body’s needs for wholesome nutrition, exercise and rest. This way you create a perfect partnership.

Q&A A Q U IC K C H

A T W IT H .. .

Jess Lacroix @NOBADDAYS_EST.NEVER

YOU RECENTLY PAINTED A MURAL AT THE YOUTH ACTIVITY CENTRE IN BYRON, HOW DID THAT OPPORTUNITY COME ABOUT?

A golden bout of serendipity that I ran with and dove right into, is there any other way? On my flight over, I started a conversation with a perfect stranger, Teeya, the YAC manager who also hails from my Canadian homeland. She peaked at my portfolio and the innovative project for the heart of the YAC was something that I wanted to jump on immediately. Having founded my own arts program for children and youth five years ago as a young entrepreneur and art teacher back in Canada, this was a fitting and meaningful project for me.

WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION BEHIND THE MURAL? I

began the mural with a naturalistic approach to “bringing the outside in” – with a realism study of the paperbark trees that are native to the Byron Shire. Yet the composition evolved into a radical abstraction, evoking a layered symbolism with the act of mapping the outside tree-scape.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BRAND NOBADDAYS EST.NEVER? NoBadDays has emanated as the culmination of my time as a free-spirited traveller, faces and foreign cities I’ve fallen in love with along the way, my restlessness for the road, and of course the tough times that have motivated me to carve out NoBadDays as my own. I launched back in February in Canada after completing my fine arts degree in Australia. It’s been a true passion project, doing my own silk-screening and screen-printing production in-house (which I carry with me while backpacking and travelling to new cities for NoBadDays pop up shops). I wanted to create a brand for the wanderers like myself, for those who seek to get lost to be grounded. See Jess's work at the Byron YAC during opening hours.
