RHYTHMIC DESIGN

Christian Friedrich Martin: Founder of Company

Design Objective: To develop the schematic lighting design for a commercial office. Verification of IES targets for illuminating each space within a graphic color coded hierarchy map is required. Course: Lighting for Interior Design I Task: As a designer, my goal was to create a lighting plan that conveyed a rhythmic concept that supported Martin’s passion and interest in bringing people together through music. Design Narrative Martin & Co brought people together to celebrate one thing they had in common, playing guitar. Employees aspire to connect with their co-workers and clients to ensure the consistent satisfaction of an instrument that provides a higher quality acoustical experience.

Represents Martin & Co’s design concept of connection with the installation of The “Running Magnet” throughout all areas of circulation within the office

Represents Martin & Co’s authentic brand with the installation of industrial light fixtures

Guitar Display Wall with Adjustable Track Lighting The “Running Magnet” - Circulation Lighting: Connects Spaces within Office

Simplifies collaboration within the office by connecting spaces with linear recessed ceiling fixtures that imitate a rhythmic, acoustical pattern throughout the space

Mimicking Guitar Strings in a Rhythmic Pattern Display

Utilizes energy efficient lighting factors, consistently identified in all Martin & Co offices, such as the use of solar power, LED products and sustainable eco-friendly finishes.

Project Objective: Given a basic perspective drawing, students were required to go above and beyond, by extending the horizon line and adding more features to the outline to make a masterpiece of their own. Course: Hand Sketching for Interiors

Task / Skills Obtained: While using colored pencils and markers, students learned and understood the coloring techniques of blending and contrast, aiding in the development of their own style to utilize in conveying ideas and designs to future clients.

S PAT IAL D I M E N S I O N My design study focuses on phenomenal space and how transparency implies not only optical characteristics but also a broader spatial order. Project Objective: To develop an artifact that expresses anthropomorphic proportions between part-to-part as well as part-to-whole, then hand draft various configurations that demonstrate an understanding of the human scale. Course: Process and Design Theory Task/ Stills Obtained: To create an anthropomorphically proportional scale, I measured the dimensions of my own body and implemented the findings of proportion into an abstract object. This spatial study helped me learn and understand specific design theories involving the built environment for bodily shelter and its direct proportional relationship to the human body.

MULTI-USE FURNITURE DESIGN WORK PLUS PROJECT Project Objective: Design a multi-use piece of case goods for installation within a client’s home. Dimensions for the furniture design are no more than 10’-0” wide, 3’-0” deep, and 8’-0” high. The final product must serve at least three different functions for the user. Course: Interior Design II Task: This custom furniture piece is designed for a client whose life is centered around balancing fitness, work, and sleep.

THE WORKFIT LOUNGE The WorkFit Lounge is the newest complex piece of furniture that allows one to work individually or with friends at a desk, exercise with two different workout-oriented structures, and lounge together with friends while watching TV.

Metal- Lam: Chemetal

3rd STRUCTURE This part is designed to hold storage for not only personal belongings but for six chairs. The chairs can easily be removed by a handle underneath the chair within the wall.

1st STRUCTURE Metal: Chemetal This part is designed to be a structure for strength building with the connected hand rails. One is able to lift themselves up or attach more equipment, like a rubber pull rope for more arm strength exercises. The structure can then fall forwards acting as a bed frame.

Dark Oak P-Lam: Wilson Art

Stainless Steel: Chemetal

Metal: Monroe

2nd STRUCTURE The second part is designed when right side up, to be another structure for work out equipment. One can adjust the height of the legs on the table for pull ups. When the table is extended out, it is used as a workspace and can be lowered from 30" to 15" to also become a coffee table for lounging.

S PAT IAL AN D C O L O R S T U D Y / AP P L I CAT I O N COLOR STUDY SPATIAL STUDY Project Objective: Given limitations on the square footage, height, and thickness of materials, students constructed and designed a pavilion within the Japanese Botanical Gardens in Fort Worth, TX. Course: Space and Color Theory Task/ Skills Obtained: My design provides a space of peace and tranquility that creates an environment where one can connect with nature. The spatial planning within my pavilion gives visitors a suggestion in direction, leading towards an appealing viewpoint of the surrounding garden. The developmental studies of light and color strengthened my understanding of the different effects that color portrays in relation to its surrounding spatial elements.

SOLAR GEOMETRY By researching the building’s geographical location in comparison to the sun’s movement, Interstellar’s exterior shell allows daylight to penetrate through, illuminating the retail spaces where high lumen outputs are needed, as well as provide the building with energy efficient features through the use and installation of solar panels on the roof above spaces where only artificial light is needed to maximize sustainable features and minimize the company’s energy footprint. 42"

HEALTHCARE INTERIOR DESIGN Reception

LH Medical Diagnosis Center, with it’s metaphoric name of “The Sanctuary,” breaks the boundaries of regimented healthcare design, to provide an environment that is evocative of another pleasant, harmonic place. The Sanctuary is a place of holistic healthing, providing the highest level of cancer care.

Changing Rooms Amenities

Sedona, Arizona

LH Medical Diagnosis Center emphasizes the importance of adding amenities in healthcare settings to help comfort the patients, as well as make them feel at home. The Sanctuary’s design includes amenities such as a coffee bar and snack station located within sub-waiting areas.

The Sanctuary’s design is heliocentric: it incorporates the geometric and organic shapes derived from the sun, as well as the different hues of the Sun’s reflected light through transparent material.

Chairs include soft armrests, with sasters that allow easy movement and a backrest that conforms to the natural curvature of the spine. All uphosltery is PVC free and avoids the presencr of harmful flame retardents.

Range of Seating

Biophilic Design Plants aren’t the only aspect of nature that can be brought indoors. A simple water feature wall can reduce stress level, increase relaxation, and generate negative ions, which increase the flow of oxygen to the brain.

Exam Rooms

Centralized Nurse Station

The door at the end of the exam room hallway is the barrier that separates the patient from the employee section. The end of the wooden organic ceiling is an indicator to the patient that they have reached the end of their navigational journey.

A centralized nursing station can provide space for collaboration among caregivers and can also represent a symbolic barrier separating the public and private spaces of a unit that operate as a mechanism of social control where individuals are expected to formally seek permission to enter the unit before proceeding to patient rooms. From a pivotal location within the unit, the nursing station also serves to maintain work-flow and is the setting for frequent social interaction and formal/ informal teaching, as well as learning activities.

HEALTHCARE LIGHTING DESIGN

Reflected Ceiling Plan

The LH Medical Diagnosis Center’s design has an emphasis on lighting, specifically natural and artifictial light with its use of many windows within the sub-waiting areas and color tuning fixtures in both staff and patient areas.

Artificial Daylight Light Fixture

Maximizing daylight: The patients can walk through The Sanctuary and watch light play over this meditative escape. Implementing cycles and rythmns into Healthcare Lighting Design is intrinsic to a high quality life for both patients and employees. LH Medical Diagnosis Center’s Lighting Design is centered around elements of Sanctuary and Light with more windows and tunable light fixtures in patient and staff areas.

Circulation: Explanation of fixture within ceiling component

The Nurse Station Lighting: The light fixtures in the nurse station mimic the rendering of daylight to help regulate an individual’s natural sleep cycle. Light fixtures within the nurse station are color tuning ranging in color temperatures from 2700K to 5700K as well as ranging in levels of intensity from 200 lumens to 250 lumens.

Wayfinding: Patients can easily navigate their way through the space by following the flow of the organic wooden ceiling, illuminated with LED recessed linear fixtures. Not only is the ceiling distinguishable in its shape and finish, but also in the way it brightens the patient's navigational path, starting in the dressing room zone, through the subwaiting areas, and finally towards the exam rooms.

An artificial skylight has been developed which aims at creating an impression of a daylight opening in the ceiling by means of an artificial sunspot and a blue sky with perceived infinite depth.

This collection of landscape photography, taken at Cascine Park in Florence, Italy, emphasizes the idea of discovering new ways to look at familiar places. Project Objective: With the use of a SLR digital camera, capture a collection of landscape images that show a unique point of view Course: Introduction to Digital Media Photography Task/ Skills Obtained: I created my landscape collection by utilizing camera features, such as adjusting the shutter speed, ISO, and exposure. Combining these skills with digital media techniques in Photoshop and Adobe Bridge successfully enhanced the scenes in my images.

My collection focuses on finding the beauty of nature within the built environment and its surrounding natural landscape, even when observed on a gloomy day.

CHANGING YOUR LENS

Locals Design Objective: Create a collection of images that naturally convey an emotion Course: Introduction to Digital Photography Task/ Skills Obtained: By exploring the city of Florence and interacting with locals, I captured candid moments of happiness from individuals working within their daily jobs.

LIGHT AND COLOR:ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY

The Complementary Relationship Between Architecture and Nature

Design Objective: To create a collection of images that combine two different elements of photography while showcasing an augmented, unforeseen perspective. Course: Introduction to Digital Photography Task/ Skills Obtained: The composition of this collection is a juxtaposition between creative urban landscapes and architectural photography, which together, conceptually represent a theme of light and color. By utilizing digital media techniques, I applied black and white filters on non-illuminated spaces of architecture while leaving illuminated spaces in color. This digital effect comparing illuminated spaces dramatically highlights where sunlight hits specific parts of architecture in an urban environment, giving the viewer a sense of nature within an environment inhabited by people.

Nature Within Light A conceptual study showcasing a design emphasis of nature through light fixtures

Design Objective: To create and digitally modify a collection of images that capture components of nature. Course: Introduction to Digital Media Task/ Skills Obtained: By analyzing a vast range of light fixtures and observing their different qualities of shapes and colors, I composed a collection of pictures digitally modified to enhance the main concept of nature. My collection is divided into two sections that are classified by their color temperature of either warm or cold illumination. This contrast in color symbolizes the earth and its components of fire (warm) and water (cool). The orientation of each picture reinforces the contrast between the two sections. The landscape-oriented pictures represent fire (warm), while the portrait-oriented pictures represent water (cool). Although the color temperature and orientation of these photos separate my series into two groups, the underlining component of nature aspects within each fixture ties all eight of the photos together.

Inspiration: Inspired by the 2018 Design Fair in Milan, Italy, Nature Within Light focuses on specific interior architectural light fixtures and how they resemble different elements of nature.
