“The ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level.” Edwin Knox and Juri Staasi met at Boston University while Edwin was studying archeology and Juri was studying mathematics and fractals. They are practicing Buddhists. They finished school together and found jobs at The Art Institute of Chicago. Now they have downsized from their home in Evanston, Illinois where they raised their daughter, Sophia, who is adopted from Kazakhstan. They both have grandsons, Eddie (4) and Jasper (6) who also live in Chicago. They travel to India and Tibet a good amount, are practicing Buddhists, and prefer clean, modern spaces. They purchased a one floor condominium in Chicago that accommodates their style and their needs for space, considering Aging in Place, and modernism. Planning For Aging-In-Place Edwin Knox and Juri Staasi Residence Callie Walton

Edwin Knox and Juri Staasi met at Boston University while Edwin was studying archeology and Juri was studying mathematics and fractals. Juri was born in Ukraine, a country in Eastern Europe known for its Orthodox church architecture, Black Sea coastline and forested mountains. Kiev is the capitol of Ukraine, a city known for their first heritage site Saint Sophia Cathedral, whose name came from Hagia Sophia in Constantinople meaning, “holy wisdom.” Juri and Edwin named their daughter after this Cathedral. Juri immigrated to Boston when he was 12 and went on to study mathematics and fractals at Boston University where he met Edwin and is now a professor emeritus at the University of Chicago. Even though Juri has the title of a retired college professor, he is still remembered as a very successful teacher and dedicates his time to the Institute. After a childhood on the farm, Edwin moved to Chicago to attend The Art Institute to study ceramics and art history. He attended Boston University for graduate school to find the love of his life and studying what he loved, archeology. After graduate school, Edwin works on sites in Turkey, Jordan, and Northern India. Turkey has the most well-known archeology site first noted by The University of Chicago in 1963 named, Gobekli Tepe. This site has the world’s oldest megaliths from the 10th-8th millennium BCE, and is in the southeastern Anatolia Region in modern day Turkey. Another area in the world well known for its archeology sites is Jordan, more specifically in Petra where the archeology site “ElDier” was founded. El-Dier dates to the 2nd century AD, is made out of sandstone, and is known for being one of the 7 wonders of the world. Lastly. Northern India is known for its two famous archeology sites which are Jaisalmer Fort and Kumbhalgarh Fort located within the Indus Valley civilization. Edwin currently works as a consultant at The Art Institute of Chicago. After Edwin and Juri finished school together and found jobs at The Art Institute of Chicago, they proceeded to downsize from their home in Evanston, Illinois to raise their daughter, Sophia, who is adopted from Kazakhstan. Juri and Edwin would like to have an apartment that accommodates their entire family in downtown Chicago and provides the opportunity to entertain friends.

The design concept for Edwin Knox and Juri Staasi is derived from the Buddhist religion and practice: Fire, Water, and Nature. Specific colors and materials fit the aesthetic and symbolic representation of the Buddhist elements. The three basic elements of fire, water, and nature are expressed in different parts of the apartment and tie together the concept centered on the general beliefs of Buddhism. The concept of this residence reflects the practices and beliefs of Edwin and Juri so they can feel at home and in “their element.

The vibrant aesthetic for the kitchen reflects the basic element of Fire through use of the colors yellow and red, representing the energy of life and compassion.

Cool colors of blue in the master bedroom represent the element of water. The meditation room represents the basic Buddhist element of nature.

The color green symbolizes nature and the determination to grow. Green conveys an aesthetic that is inspiring to anyone trying to grow as a person, which perfectly fits the theme of a meditation room.
