APRIL 2014 Team Orlando Celebrates 10-Year Partnership with FLETC By Dolly Rairigh Glass

There was no fooling on April 1, when the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers, part of the Department of Homeland Security, celebrated a 10-year anniversary partnership with Team Orlando. “Today is a spectacular day,” said Capt. Steve Nakagawa, Commanding Officer, Naval Air Warfare Center Training System Division. “We, in the training business, have to partner with each other because we all get better through partnerships.”

UCF's Computer Programming Team Codes Its Way Into History By Dolly Rairigh Glass

This upcoming summer, June 22-26, the University of Central Florida Computer Programming Team will travel across the world to compete in the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) World Finals, organized by the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM), the largest computing organization. No stranger to this competition, UCF is in its 32nd year of participation in the contest, which only began in 1977, six years prior to UCF’s first year of participation. The team will compete for the world title in Ekaterinburg, the fourth largest city in Russia, at host site, Ural Federal University.

National Center for Simulation Honors UCF Inductees By Jessica Ortega

The National Center for Simulation recently inducted the first Hall of Fame class for its contributions to the field of modeling and simulation, and half of them have strong ties to UCF. “For too long, the modeling and simulation community in Florida has been unnoticed. Now, we have a Hall of Fame to point to with a significant number of its members coming from UCF,” said Henry Okraski, co-founder of the National Center for Simulation.

Serbia Joins ADL Partnership Lab Network Courtesy of ADL

The ADL Initiative recently welcomed Serbia as a new partner in its ADL Partnership Lab network. Representatives from the Office of Secretary of Defense and the country of Serbia completed signing the Memorandum of Understanding in March. Colonel Goran Šimić, the Head of the Center for Simulations and Distance Learning at the Serbian Ministry of Defense and Serbian Army, is the lab’s Director. Fire Rescue Uses Simulation to Test Crisis Decision Makers Courtesy of UCF Today

Orange County Fire Rescue Department’s new Regional Command School and Simulation Center, recently credited UCF’s Institute for Simulation & Training for the research efforts that helped make the school an effective source for training central Florida’s fire rescue incident commanders. IST’s logo shares space on the wall outside the new training center at Valencia College’s Criminal Justice Institute. Researchers in IST’s RAPTER Lab, headed by Ron Tarr, and E2i Creative Studio, headed by Eileen Smith, worked with OCRFD Division Chief of Training, Mike Wajda, and many of OCFRD’s Fire Officers to develop a new curriculum and simulation system to train on-scene fire commanders.

Focusing on continuing opportunities to bring industry and Team Orlando members together to share in clever innovations and new partnerships, the National Center for Simulation (NCS) will present Team Orlando Spring Industry Capability Day on April 16. The half-day event, taking place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in UCF’s Partnership 3, Room 321 A/B welcomes fourteen companies to showcase their new and exciting capabilities for acquisition and professional personnel from all Team Orlando commands in a relaxed environment, and a venue right in their backyard.

UCF Cyber Defense Team Heads for Nationals Again Courtesy of UCF Today

UCF’s Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition Team is no one-hit wonder. The team just won the 2014 Southeast Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition for a second consecutive year. What’s even more impressive is that the team has only been in existence for two years. This year, the team also earned two specialty awards at the competition: “Best in Business” and “Best in Defense.”

The University of Central Florida is conducting a confidential Department of Defense funded research study investigating the strengths & resilience of American families. The study is for Military and Civilian families with children 7-17 years old and consists of a 2-3 hour initial assessment of mood, behavior and resilience strategies. Parents and children will spend less than 7 minutes a day for a week in the privacy their homes to complete the study.

Days two and three (June 18-19) will be hands-on working sessions for xAPI adopters and those participating in the current xAPI Design Cohort.

STEM News: Simulation Summit on April 28 Orange County Public Schools Career & Technical Education, in partnership with the Dorothy Lumley Melrose Center for Technology & Innovation, is hosting the 2014 Orange County Simulation Summit on April 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Orange County Library, Dorothy Lumley Melrose Center. Space for the event is limited. The main purpose for the summit is to bring together the simulation community, as well as other local organizations, and explore multiple viewpoints. The event will serve as a kickoff point to create more opportunities for Orange County youth through quality education and training.
