December 2014 Army and Marines research sand table technology By Dolly Rairigh Glass
At the Modern Day Marine expo at Quantico, Va., in September, there was a lot of buzz about an Augmented Reality Sand Table (ARES), being developed by the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) Simulation Training and Technology Center (STTC), a division of the Human Research and Engineering Directorate. But what may have seemed odd for some — the Army showcasing a potential new technology at a Marines gathering — was nothing more than a day’s work for Team Orlando.
And the 2014 SGS&C winners are… Covering a variety of subjects from cyber security to a slave’s escape to freedom, to a synthetic biology game, this year’s Serious Games Showcase & Challenge (SGS&C) winners were announced at the annual Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) in Orlando, Fla. SGS&C received submissions from all over the nation, as well as internationally, that competed for the awards. Middle and high school students from Orange County Public Schools (Florida) picked this year’s Students’ Choice from a selection of twelve, while the prestigious People’s Choice Award was chosen exclusively by I/ITSEC attendees. The five remaining category winners were chosen by a panel of international evaluators.

NCS unveils Hall of Fame “Wall of Fame” By Dolly Rairigh Glass
Last spring, with the induction and celebration of the first National Center for Simulation Modeling and Simulation Hall of Fame class, Orange County Government, including the Office of the Mayor and the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC), wanted to share in the excitement of the newly formed Hall of Fame, and offered to allocate a special wall to pay tribute to the pioneers who helped to lay the groundwork for M&S. This month, the NCS “Wall of Fame” was unveiled to the thousands of attendees and participants of this year’s Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC), Dec. 1-5. The wall, which is located adjacent to the anticipated 6,000-square-foot Destination Lounge in the south concourse of the OCCC, boasts the billion dollar MS&T industry in Central Florida, the important work and collaboration of Team Orlando, and of course, the individual plaques commemorating the charter class inducted in the 2014 Hall of Fame.

Otronicon brings science, art & technology to Life Team Orlando will once again be a part of this year’s OTRONICON – Orlando Electronic Interactive Entertainment Convention — featuring a selection of games from the 2014 Serious Games Showcase & Challenge finalists and the “Deployable Virtual Training Environment” from Program Manager, Training Systems (PM TRASYS). Otronicon is January 16-19, 2015, at the Orlando Science Center. In its 10th year, Otronicon is the Orlando Science Center’s largest event and focuses on peaking the interest of students about future career paths in video games, simulation and digital media by bringing to life, science, art, and technology. Each year, Team Orlando joins the Orlando Science Center and multiple industry partners for this event and provides attendees a small sampling of the growing digital media technologies, most of which are from Orlando.
Meet and greet for Team Orlando leadership The PEO STRI and NAWCTSD Offices of Small Business Programs are hosting a “Meet & Greet” session with Team Orlando command/ organization leaders on Feb. 10, 2015 at 10:15 a.m. in Partnership 3, room 321. Although the event will be open to all industry providers, the principle audience is small business. This event is part of a periodic series referred to as the Small Business Information Forum Initiative (SBIFI) led by PEO STRI and NAWCTSD Small Business Professionals Tara Wagner and Tony Delicati. The “Meet & Greet” event will provide a forum for industry representatives to meet command/organization leaders and hear them briefly describe their command missions and priorities to enable an improved understanding as to how mature and start-up small business and aspiring entrepreneurs may contribute through prime and subcontracting.
ADL hosts xAPI plugfest at I/ITSEC While the modeling and simulation world descended on Orlando for one of its largest annual conference and exposition events, on December 3, over fifty interested I/ITSEC attendees participated in the Experience API (xAPI) PlugFest event. The PlugFest was ADL’s one-day series of presentations and hands-on demonstrations involving the new specification. The day began with remarks from Dr. Paula Durlach, Acting Director, ADL Initiative, who focused her remarks on how ADL and the community can work together to lower the “barrier of entry” to xAPI use and adoption. Following Dr. Durlach’s introductory comments, other ADL personnel followed with presentations on the xAPI’s origins and purpose, summaries of the xAPI Design Cohort, Communities of Practice, and Specification Working Groups—all of which serve to engage the learning and development community in using and shaping the specification.
