NCS’ Cheros: Simulation Industry is Fascinating, Untapped Potential

DID YOU KNOW?

By Dolly Rairigh Glass

George Cheros moved to Florida with his family when he was only three. He loved sports growing up as a kid and played all the usual ones: football, basketball and baseball. But once he entered high school, the competition changed somewhat, especially with basketball. His high school probably had the best team in the history of the state of Florida that included future NBA player Darryl Dawkins. Cheros made the obvious choice to wisely switch sports and joined the soccer team, where he and his team won the championship during his junior year.

ADL Announces the 2014 Learning App Challenge Courtesy of ADL

The ADL Initiative is hosting its third annual Learning App Challenge. App developers are invited to submit mobile learning Apps designed to support Education, Training, or Performance Support. The targeted learners can be adults or students in grades K-12. The objective of the Challenge is for contestants to create an App that will help students acquire knowledge and understanding by manipulating tasks, simulations, or situations that require students to critically evaluate what they are learning.

Chess: The First Simulation of War How could ancient civilizations simulate a battlefield?

We think of chess as an entertaining game of strategy. But chess was developed during the pre-gunpowder period to simulate ancient armies. For instance, since ancient armies were so unwieldy and communication so poor, each chess player is allowed to move only one piece per turn. Because the armies were so hard to control, the battles were generally fought on relatively flat, featureless ground.

For thousands of years, chess and variants of chess were used by NCS to Induct First Class of M&S Hall of Fame civilian and military personnel By Dolly Rairigh Glass alike for entertainment, The National Center for Simulation, as part of the celebration of its education, and for "simulation." 20th year anniversary, will present for induction, the inaugural Over the centuries, war games class of the NCS Modeling and Simulation Hall of Fame on March increased in complexity, but still 26, 2014, in a special ceremony at the Orange County Convention remained elaborate variations of Center. this ancient game of strategy and skill. He supported Courtesy of the Orlando Science Center revolutionary training simulation for the Army as early as the implementation of the MILES system; and also impacted early systems such as SIMNET and the “live, virtual, constructive” paradigm. STTC Supports Successful IST Robotics Club By Daniel Barber, Ph.D., UCF Institute for Simulation and Training

The University of Central Florida (UCF) Creed states “Integrity, scholarship, community, creativity, and excellence are the core values that guide our conduct, performance, and decisions.” One core approach taken in support of this creed is a commitment to reaching out to our students and the general public to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) research and opportunities.
